Just buy an external drive.

I would appreciate some guidance How to add a 256 SSD (Samsung 840 Pro 256 SSD?) to my HP ENVY 17-3290NR (3D) Laptop.  The Laptop came standard with an 80GB mSATA + 1TB Hard Drive.  I would like to use the 256 SSD as the booth drive and install operating system and programs on this drive and store all data to the 1TB HD.
What do I do with the 80 GB mSATA SSD? Where do I install the 256 SSD? In HD slot-1 or slot-2?  I thank you in advance for your assistance and instruction on how to proceed.

That is interesting. Normally a bootmgr error message means that the boot loader is corrupt and hard disk not "dead".. Replacing the hard drive is a quickie shotgun method of resolving the issue.
Did you give up on the SSD?
The  desktop ( w/ASUS Crossfire V Formula-Z  mobo) I am using to type this, has the same SSD that you asked about. I used the method I described in the earlier post to clone the OS to the SSD. The SSD is the boot drive.

  • I just bought a 2012 Mac Mini from the Apple Store Refurbished Mac Mini 2.3 i7 16 gig 256 SSD Intel 4000

If Intel 4000 Graphics uses up to 1024 gigs of Integrated where does it get it from if the computer only has a 256 SSD
I want to run Final Cut Pro X for video editing.
Will this computer set up do that?
I know I need external media storage but what about the computer and graphics running FCP X for editing?

Are you asking the same question you've already posted in this ASC area?
The RAM (random access memory) is available to the System, and 1024MB
is 1GB. Your Solid State Drive is 256GB, or add many zeros to the MB figure.
The SSD or an HDD is storage, also where your OS X & apps live. Spare SSD
capacity could be used by the OS X as Virtual Memory. Another related topic.
You may need to acquire and use an external drive via Thunderbolt for storage
and that may be best if also an SSD since they are faster than hard disk drives
so may not lag too much with when accessed by Thunderbolt cable by the OS X.
Not sure if you understand the specifications and how they pertain to the Mac.
    In any event...
    Good luck & happy computing!

Hi I have just bought a new Mac Book Pro 15" Retina display with 256 SSD and 8G RAM. I had my info transferred form my Previous Mac Book Pro late 2011 to this machine. When trying to download Mavericks it says it cannot be loaded onto this machine? Strange as I have just downloaded Pages, Numbers and Keynote...free? Thanks and Regards
    Brian

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
You already have got OS X Mavericks installed (the Keynote, Pages and Numbers versions available in the Mac App Store are only compatible with OS X Mavericks).
You have got a Late 2013 MacBook Pro, which uses a special OS X Mavericks version that is not available in the Mac App Store. This is the reason why the Mac App Store is not compatible with OS X Mavericks even if you are using it. This will be fixed in OS X 10.9.1, when your Mac uses the same Mavericks version as all other Macs.
Until then, you can reinstall OS X through OS X Recovery > http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4718

  • 512 ssd vs 256 ssd 750 hdd 7200rpm?

Hi I read that several people configure 256gb ssd + 750gb hdd 7200rpm, cause they use the  ssd for applications and the hhd for storage. But in general you
will be working with both of them right? example whatch a movie. The program is on ssd but the movie is on hdd. So it will load faster on a plain 512 ssd or 2x256 ssd?

Ralph your response is way off. The answer to OP's question mostly depends on write performance of the SSD, especially after the SSD has become full and the OS is starting to erase previously deleted (but not yet fully erased) blocks. That is when the SSD starts to slow down, and then the TRIM feature of SSD controller needs to be benchmarked. To answer the OP's question, one needs to run benchmarks of various use cases, especially against an aged SSD.
I found this question myself googling for answers to same topic. Most benchmarks do not seem to be testing aged SSDs, but brand new out of the box SSDs that will usually smoke even 7200RPM drives. But what happens 3 months later after the SSD virgin blocks have been written to at least once and then it starts it slow erase cycles?
Read performance of the SSD will always be faster than the 7200RPM drive, esp when comparing random access or fragmented file system accesses. So why does write performance matter if you aren't, for example, doing heavy write tasks like saving video files? Because the OS does tons of little random reads AND writes just sitting there... anything you do like open a new browser tab or start a Flash player will open up temp files for writing... so write performance becomes quite important if writes start to get really slow for any reason.
edit: some anecdotal evidence that aging the SSD is not slowing down write for modern SSDs vs the bad experience I had with 1st gen SSDs.

  • MSI Wind Top AG2712 i7-3630QM 1TB 128GB SSD 12GB W8

    Hello everybody!
I'm from Poland and my English isn't very well.
I have a question:  I have MSI Wind Top AG2712 i7-3630QM 1TB 128GB SSD 12GB W8   and I have gaphic card GTX 670MX. Would i have a NVIDIA  GTX 970M on thic AiO PC?  Please write back!
    Good be!

    Hi,
With AiO I guess it's similar to notebooks: it might work, but there are few factors that might have to be changed. For example you would most likely have to modify heatsink for the GPU. Also custom BIOS might also be needed.
As long as these can have their GPUs removed/swapped around. So even if you buy 970M, make sure you will be able to return it in case it don't work.
I would ask MSI as they have all the details about each AiO version and graphics cards, so they should be able to answer this straight away, simple as "Yes or No", as currently on the forum we can only guess whether it will work or not.

  • Macbook pro 13 retina 4 ram 128 SSD or 8 ram 256 SSD

    Hello,
I would like to ask, what config would suit my needs the most. I have read all these forum questions, but I am still undecided.
Here are things that I WILL DO:
    - Safari opened (max 20 tabs), music (iTunes), mail, skype = these tasks at the same time
    - Full HD video playback (youtube, etc...) = only this task with skype running
    - Pages or word = only this task with skype running
    - 27 Full HD monitor connected via HDMI
    Things I WON'T DO:
    - playing games
    - photo, video editing
    - I wont be instaling new versions of OS X (will be on mavericks forever)
    - no storing of heavy filles (only some documents, iTunes library which has about 15GB and that is all)
That's it. I would like to ask if the retina 13 base line models can provide me smooth experience with no lags, slow downs, page reloads, etc.. Or if I shloud consider the middle range model (8 ram, 256 SSD). I don't want Macbook air.
Thank you in advance and have a nice day. (sry for english )

    Miselik,
Great clarity on describing your needs.
I use a 4 GB MBA on Mavericks with no issues.  However 8 GB will future-proof the machine as applications get larger.  So the 4/8 GB decision is not a heavy one.  Either will work.
A bigger decisions is can you live with 128 GB of mass storage or would you prefer 256?  From your description you indicate you will not need a lot of storage so 128 GB should do.  If you run out of SSD space you can always offload some files on an external disk.
For only $200 more I personally would go for the larger model but your description indicates the smaller model will work for your needs.

  • Izzy Tutorials Downloads -- Download to my Computer 256 SSD "Internal Drive" on my Mac Mini or to my Lacie Little Big Thunderbolt 512 SSD Dual Raid "External Drive"

I'm starting with a blank slate and zero knowledge.
Both my computer and external hard drive are brand new refurbs.
I bought FCP X from the App  Store and put it on my  internal drive along with Motion and Compressor..
I'm getting the $37 Izzy Tutorials Training Course and probably some others later on.
Should I put them on my Internal or External Drive.
My External has (two) 256 SSD drives built in for 512 total.
    Raid 0 Raid 1
My Internal is 256 SSD Apple
    Thunderbolt connection.
I know my media goes there.
What about this Izzy Series of Download Training Stuff.
    Thanks

    Ok, Thanks
I just clicked the "Download" and it jumped to my Downloads thing at the bottom of my computer screen.
I hooked a Cat 6 Cable from my router to my computer for better service rather than Wifi.
I'm hoping that after it downloads it will give me the choice to "Save" and I can then get it to go to my Lacie.
Hoping it gives me choices as to which of the two 256 drives it has also.
This is all new to me, Thanks

  • Migrating Windows 8.1 from one SSD to a new SSD

I've been doing a bit of research, and I'd like to slightly upgrade my current system by purchasing a new case, CPU cooler, and SSD (as well as possibly a new CPU.)
I have heard warnings from people regarding cloning Windows onto an SSD (it won't be set up properly for an SSD, etc) but all of those warnings appear to be in the case of cloning Windows from an HDD to an SSD, not from an old SSD onto a new SSD (which is what I'll be doing.)
My question: Is it safe to clone windows from my current SSD onto a new one? (Samsung 840 Pro 256gb)
Would I run into any issues?
I want to avoid purchasing a new copy of windows, as well as completely reinstalling, because I have a lot of programs and frankly reinstalling Windows from scratch is a pain in the butt.

    Hi!
Even though it's a pain in the "you know what", the absolutely best thing to do is to reinstall the OS.
Since you are not chaning any components in the computer it's quite safe to clone the drive to another SSD, this since you won't run ito any trouble with drivers and so on. So from that perspective you are good to go!
The problems that might occur is that data becomes corrupt when cloning the drive, so for this reason I allways recomend a fresh install.
But as mentioned, since you won't be changing hardware or anything, no new drivers needs to be added or removed so even though it pains me to say it, cloning the drive is an option.
If the data becomes corrupted, then you can reinstall the OS.
    Best regards

  • Can I partition 256gb ssd and 1tb hard drive to be split 50 / 50 for Mac OS and windows?

I am going to buy a new iMac. The question is which storage option? If I get the 256GB ssd and the 1TB option, it appears the mac OS is pre installed on the ssd which is great.  I would then like to install windows 7 on the ssd using bootcamp, and partitioning the ssd to be half for mac and half windows.  I think this is the best thing to do... Correct? My main concern is then can I also split the 1 TB hard drive as well? Ideally I would like to split both drives 50 / 50, install the operating systems and software on the ssd and use the hard drive as general storage.  I have read mixed reports on the possibilities of this and would really appreciate your help and advice.  I am not that technical and would like to avoid using third party software, and stick to bootcamp if possible.
    Thanks all!

I suggest you open Boot Camp Assistant and click on the button to print the documentation. Read it carefully before using BCA. BCA only creates the partition. It does not format it. That is done with the Windows installer at the beginning of the Windows installation.
Although Windows can r/w NTFS volumes OS X can only read them. That means you can copy files from the Windows boot volume but not write files to it. If you need to move files to and from the Windows system you would use the data volume you will set up on the HDD. If you don't need to use files larger than 4 GBs in Windows then FAT32 is fine. Using ExFAT would only be advisable if you anticipate the need to handle files larger than the 4 GB limit of FAT32.

  • Upgrading from a 256GB SSD to 1TB SSD

    Hi,
I recently purchased a 2014 a wonderful Mac Pro (Cylinder type)
    3.7GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon E5 processor
    12GB 1866MHz DDR3 ECC memory
    Dual AMD FirePro D300
    with 2GB GDDR5 VRAM each
    256GB PCIe-based flash storage1
Have formed a view for a number of reasons that I want to upgrade the HD to 1Tb SSD (rather than attach additional external storage).
What is the best way to approach this upgrade without losing or having to reinstall the software already resident on the 256Gb SSD to be replaced.
Please note I am a recent convert to the Apple platform so ignorance is assured.
    Cheers

Since the first step is finding an SSD which will fit and work (as Cekari points out, your typical 2.5" SSD won't), this discussion might be of interest to you. It gives some idea of what's compatible with what.

  • New imac with 256 ssd and 1TB HD want OS leopard and lion.

I want my new imac to be able to boot into leopard or lion.  Should I partition the SSD or install the second OS on the second HD (1TB HD).  I have plenty of room on both since I don't tend to store much on the HDs.
I haven't received the imac yet so I'm not sure if it will come preloaded with Lion.

Well, if it comes with Lion preinstalled, then you will most likely not be able to boot into Snow Leopard. The point is that no Mac can boot an OS older than what it came with: notable exceptions would be Macs that are manufactured right around the time of a new OS release; in those cases, it may or may not be possible. It would depend on the machine and OS builds - you would have to ask Apple if it would be possible in your case.
If you ordered a refurb from the Apple store, then when was it manufactured? And, they do show which OS is loaded on that page.

  • Will 1TB MBPr SSD work in nMP?

I have a base nMP with 256gb PCIe SSD. The folks at my local Apple store told me the 1TB Flash drive in the new MacBook Pro Retina is a 4 lane PCIe 2.0 module. My question is does anyone know if this module will work in the nMP?

    Thanks Mike.
This is the drive I'm looking at getting:
    http://www.crucial.com/uk/store/partspecs.aspx?imodule=CT960M500SSD1
It's more the size that concerns me - in Mactracker's details about the mid 2009 model it says max hard drive is 500G, but I don't know if that's more referring to the drives that were available then..
Is anyone using a 1TB SSD drive in a mid 2009 Macbook?
