256GB SSD Write Speed - Pro Retina 13" Only

Hello,
For folks who have 256GB SSD on the MacBook Pro Retina 13", what is your Write Speed in terms of MB/s?  Please note that this is for 13", not 15".
Several reviews claim that 256GB should get around 700MB/s for Write, as well as for Read.
I just got my MBPr 13 yesterday and only installed iWorks, iPhoto, iMovie, GarageBand, Flash.  All these only take about 5GB.  I then tested the SSD Write/Read speed using BlackMagicDesign Disk Test and this what I got:
Write: 550 MB/s
Read: 700 MB/s
So I am off by 150 MB/s and I am wondering if the slow down is caused by the 5GB software (iWorks, iPhoto, etc) that I installed after unboxing.  I can understand the slow down as SSD is filled up with more stuff but the amount of speed reduction only from 5GB of new software surprised me.
Or did I simply have a defective SSD and should return this to Apple for a refund or exchange?
Appreciate your feedback!

The larger the SSD drive the faster they are. But you are confusing the reading speed with the writing speed. The SSD write/read speed for a 128GB MBA (2013) should be around 420/720 Mb/s.The larger 256 GB does provide the 700/700 Mb/s write/read speeds.

  • 2008 Mac Pro PCIe SSD write speeds

I plan on getting a PCIe SSD like the OWC Mercury Accelsior_E2 and seen great read speeds but the write speeds were much slower so anyone have info on this ?

there is a thread on MacRumors testing three I think different  PCIe cards and it will vary with different makes of SSD. Also putting the system SSD in RAID and/or on PCIe card often does not work reliably or have that much benefit. For data it is great.
    YMMV.
There are some benchmarks on SSD Review looking at numbers. Different uses benefit from random vs sustained. And sustained is not why you generally use an SSD to begin with.
0.1 nanosecond seeks, low latency highest I/O per sec, and having high reads are great for system use, audio.
That kind of setup is excellent for a photoshop scratch array volume, Aperture and Lightroom catalogues. Even iPhoto library.

I'm looking for a laptop that will last me a couple of years which is why I'm upgrading to SSD without losing performance. I usually game on my Mac so I want a laptop to handle that, handle programs in the background and writing or reading without losing speed, I also need a laptop that has fast boot time.
I will be using the laptop mainly for school and running programs such as iWork and mircrosoft office as well as websurfing and video streaming thanks for any advice.

I hope others pipe in with their comments, but the first suggestion is to visit your local Apple Store and try out the units. Trying them out can make a difference in your decision.
This is how I'd try to make sense of this:
    MBP 13 2012:
Solid all-purpose portable at a decent price, and even has a 240GB SSD. If you don't load it with tons to videos, this will more than fit your needs as a student and websurfer. A little heavier than the others here, but it's a solid package that's stable. Great if you need to use the CD/DVD.
    MBA 13 2012:
Also good, similar specs, notably lighter. Notes are easy to take, and easier to carry on long campus treks. If you're not near a power source, the battery life may be a concern. If you need a CD/DVD, you can connect it when you need it - but it's extra. Servicing a MBA is more difficult.
    MBR 15 2012:
Beautiful display, packed with performance. No DVD/CD drive, NVIDIA performance is unproven, kind of pricey, the first generation of a device; it's going to get better over time. Can't be serviced in any way by the user; the Apple Store is your only option. Now's not the best time to get the MBR.
    MBR 13 2012:
    Same comments.
I'd say the MBA is a good pick. Few moving parts, therefore more reliability. Low heat. You can always attach a CD/DVD drive via USB. Intel Graphics is solid; no problems there. Plenty of capacity for your needs. And the display is bright. MBA 13 or 11, IMO.

  • What is better to buy: MBP w 256GB SSD or MBP w Retina display 256 Flash D

I'm in the process of buying an new MBP (13 inch) and can't decide between the MBPro with 256 GB SSD or the Retina display with 256 flash memory.  Both come very close in price, but I'm confused about which is better.  I use my computer for internet surfing, word processing for work, and watching movies, in addition I have large music and picture libraries.  I'm also confused by the option of buying the MB Pro with the standard ATA drive which would give me 750 GB.  Isn't there more storage in this last mentioned version?  Too many choices!!

Given your use indications, I would opt for the non-retina macbook Pro with the 256gig SSD
The standard SATA conventional HD of course is larger, but external storage is VERY cheap. A 1TB external USB toshiba is only $65 retail.
The SSD is nice, I have both conventional and SSD.  SSD is very fast, boots extremely fast and is lovely on read/write speeds.
If youre not doing video or high end photo editing in mass, the Retina screen is nice. Ive owned a retina for several months. I still have a non-retina Pro.
750gig is MORE yes, but storage is CHEAP.    The SSD has a price premium. Basically its non-volatile memory (the SSD), meaning extremely fast and fast read/write.
yes, the SSD is much smaller, but youre getting the premium ultrafast boot times
Go for the SSD and spend $65 on a 1TB external USB.
You MUST (the general rule is) have a backup for your data regardless anyway.
Most importantly regardless of what you get, always always always backup your data (time machine backup) AND archive your valuable data (yet another external HD).
Mass internal HD storage has almost become an irrelevancy (as it should!).   Any laptop should never (and never should have in the past) be considered a data storage center,....rather a working platform. Keep all huge files not often used OFF the computer on external storage.

  • Upgrading SSD on Macbook Pro Retina

I am considering getting the OWC SSD upgrade for my MacBook Pro-R. When I was shopping for one, I looked here and some guys recommended getting storage later either external or upgrade since speed, ram etc were more important. So I did just that, I opted for the bare minimum 256GB SSD.
    http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/SSD/OWC/Aura_Pro_Retina_2012/
It's been good so far and I don't need to upgrade yet, but it will happen eventually, so I figured what the hay, might as well do it now so I don't have to transfer a lot of stuff later.
It is pretty straight forward upgrade, but my concern is OSX, how do I take it off my old SSD and put it on my new SSD? I'm not entirely familiar with Mac and OSX and there's been a lot of learning going on since I made the switch from Windows to Mac.
If you guys can explain, link, or refer me to how to restore my OSX on the new SSD that'll be greatly appreciated.
My assumption is I need to buy the external optical drive and make a back up CD/DVD.
Well thank you for reading and the help.
One more thing, how does upgrading my SSD effect my AppleCare and Warranty? I'd like to think it doesn't, but I have a strange feeling it does.

  • Is SSD of Macbook Pro Retina Display upgradable

I have recently purchased (19th November,2014) Macbook Pro, Retina Display, 13' i5 Processor with SSD 128 GB. Now I badly want to expand my SSD with another 128 GB. Please advise me how I will do that. What is the cost for it?

At the present time there is NO SSD in the after market compatible with your MBP.  If you are really desperate for additional storage, you only get it by purchasing a new MBP configured with the amount that you require.

  • Macbook pro Retina Photoshop ONLY graphic artifacts

I have a macbook pro Retina Mid 2012 for work.  And every time I use photoshop, and move the cursor around I see very annoying graphical artifacts on the left and top of the screen.  This looks like a driver issue one might expect on a PC.  I can't take a screen shot of it, since it goes away when I try to do that..  of course.  but attached below is a mockup of what it basically looks like.  (I cannot upgrade to maverick due to not workig with software we need at the office)
This ONLY happens in Photoshop.  and has been happeneing ever since the laptop was first purchased.  Has anyone else seen something like this?  Is there a driver update to fix it? etc...

There are so many apps that use the NVIDIA GPU... download gfxCardStatus and install it so that you can get a handle on apps that use the GPU processor (Chrome, any Creative Suite app, etc.).
If the problem only occurs when using the discrete GPU in PS then it's either a hardware fault or a PS fault - you'll know if other apps that use the NVIDIA chip display the same anomalies.

  • Slow ssd write speed on late 2012 mac mini i5

Hi everyone. Just upgraded my mac mini late 2012 i5 to 120gb sandisk extreme ssd. But most i can get on it is 150mb/s write speed. Read speed is around 430mb/s. have trim support enabled on it. Any ideas what could be wrong with it? Did I miss something? Why writing speed is so slow??? Is this could be caused by old hdd back-up? Will fresh install of 10.8.2 do the job?
    Thanks

When i did os install to my ssd i got recovery partition automaticly. I have downloaded recovery assistant from apple i think it does the same thing as recovery partition on hdd.
Correct. The steps I suggested keep the Recovery HD on the Fusion drive. Because when you run the Terminal commands, the selected partitions to create the Fusion drive will get erased. So you'll have to reinstall OS X and if it's reinstalled using an external Recovery HD you won't get the Recovery HD on the Fusion drive. I reviewed this link from ars Technica and one of the screen shots toward the end shows the Recovery HD at the end of the HDD. Whereas the SSD just shows a Boot OS X partition.
When you use the whole disks, you'll get a result like this link and the person is asking how to get the Recovery HD back on.
If you want to continue using Command-R instead of booting to an external Recovery HD, you'll want to follow the steps I outlined. If this doesn't matter to you then you can boot from an external Recovery HD.

  • 256GB SSD on MacBook Pro 15"?

Will Apple introduced the 256GB SSD option for the 15" MacBook Pro

You know the hard drive is now considered a user replaceable component and so you don't need to wait and see if apple will do it. You can buy one and install it yourself.

  • Slow Intel 530 SSD in Mac Pro 1.1 (only write is slow)

I Understand that SSD speeds will clock down in half since my the Mac Pro 1.1 SATA ports are 2g, but I'm still getting super slow speeds on my intel SSD. My intel SSD is clocked at around 550 read and write, which half for sata 2 should be about 250 read and write (in actual performance). The read is good at about 255, but the write is at 120s. I also have an OWC SSD, and that one is about 250 read and write, which is correct. Why is my intel SSD at 120 write instead of about 250? It has the latest firmware installed.
im running mavericks 10.9.5 on an 8-core Mac Pro 1.1.

OWC is not anti-TRIM. Their statements are essentially that their devices do not require TRIM.
That is very different from what you said.
Once you have enabled TRIM, every NEW delete you do will actually free the blocks occupied by deleted data. But to get back your performance, you need to mark more than a few blocks as TRIM-ed, then allow garbage collection to assemble them into pre-erased SuperBlocks.
One way to accomplish this is to install TRIM Enabler on an Alternate spare system drive (any system 10.6.8 or later will suffice). Then run Disk Utility (Repair Disk) against your regular Boot drive. This produces an additional line of output, "Trimming unused blocks" and the Utility pauses for up to a minute while the block re TRIM-ed. It is very satisfying.

  • Macbook pro retina, boots only with 5 gigs of ram free?

I dont know how normal this is, but here goes.
I have the 2.6 retina, 8 gig ram, 512 ssd. For some reason last night my mac got real laggy, so I decided to check out my ram usage. I downloaded this app called memory clean, and I was surprised at the free ram.
Upon a fresh boot I only have like 5.90 gigs of ram free. And once I start browsing, I'll be reduced down to like 3 and it'll get a little sluggish.
I wanted to know if this is considered normal? I reset pram and have the latest updates from the App Store is regard to the OS.

Assuming that you have Mavericks installed as your OSX, memory pressure is the important criteria, not so much the amount.  Mavericks will actually try to use as much as is available.  If you see green, RAM usage is acceptable:

  • 256GB Air or 128GB Pro Retina

I've been saving up for a 13" 256GB Macbook Air ($1,299) but now that the 13" 128GB Retina MacBook Pro has been lowered to the same price, I'm conflicted. I'm trying to decide which computer would give me the best combination of storage along with computing power.
I'm a pretty average user- I do some amateur video editing on iMovie, do basic web browsing (YouTube, Google Drive, etc.), use it for all of my school work (High School), will install a few apps, and will store my iTunes library ((1,000-2,000 songs) and a couple TV shows/Movies.) I'd be installing the iWork suite or possibly Microsoft Office for school. Lastly, I'd try using the computer for Minecraft too (I could just play on my desktop).  I am open to using external hard drives/flash drives.

A MacBook Air should be fine.

  • Replacing SSD in MacBook Pro Retina- HELP PLEASE.

I just ordered a new OWC 480gb SSD for my MBPR mid 2012 15".  I am replacing the original SSD which failed.  I have a few questions about how to go about using the new SSD, once installed.
    here is some background.
    1) the drive will be blank and unformatted with no OS.
    2) I have a time machine back up on my time capsule. The original disk is completely dead.
    3) In addition to Mavericks I also run Windows 8.1
Questions- once I replace the old drive with the new one:
    A) how will I format my new SSD? I am guessing disk utility will come up when I turn the commuter on?
    B) how do I get Mavericks Mac OS on the new drive? Do I need to pay? How will I get my time machine back up on the new drive?
    C) should I format the new SSD a special way because I will be running windows on the machine? I ran windows with Parallels on the machine prior to my original SSD dyeing, was planning on doing the same with the new one.
    D) what, if anything, can be done to avoid killing this new SSD like the last one? I am happy OWC has 3 yr warrantee on it!
Thanks in advance for help and guidance. I am a relatively novice user, so basic explanations will be appreciated.
    Thanks,

You should be able to boot from your Time Machine back up and do everything Internet Recovery and Recovery Mode allows. If not, restarting with Command+R will search your drive for the Recovery HD and if not found envoke Internet Recovery. Or you can just boot with Command+Option+R to start Internet Recovery directly.
    A. After you install the new drive and IF it is pre-formated, you don't have to reformat it. If it's not, you can use Disk Utility from the OS X Utilities menu to format it.
    B. You can install OS X Mavericks from the OS X Utilities menu and during setup plug in your TM back up to restore your user account(s), apps and data.
    C. Nothing different for running Windows since you use Parallels instead of BootCamp. I have not used Parallels, but i would assume after restoring your apps you would restore your Parallels virtual machine image for Windows and open it.
    D. Do you know what killed your original flash storage drive? If you do, don't do it! If you don't, I personally don't know of anything that would prevent a computer component from failing.

  • MacBook Pro retina 13" vs 15" what should I buy?

I was previously using a 15" retina entry level, no upgrades.  I ended up selling it to grab a new iMac and absolutely love it.  I find myself working remotely and require the use of CS6 photoshop, dreamweaver, Xcode and other developer software.  I do not do 3-d rendering or much video work.  I mainly develop websites both static and dynamic.  Will the 13" retina be sufficient for on the road work and as a main computer?

Yes 13 inch Retina should be fine for your usuage.
I use 15 inch Mac Pro Retina the only dis advantage is it huge to commute around.
13 inch should be fine. Since 3 D Apps won't be the primary use it should be fine. 13 inch Mac Pro does not have a dedicated GPU
All in All using the Mac on Retina is a pleasure browsing working and using it on day to day basis.
Would suggest when you go for the Mac Pro 13 inch if you decide go for MAX Memory possible 16 GB.
