26 GB backup with no reason at all
Title says it all.
After one day of normal activity (few MB backup each hour) I suddenly had time machine performed a 26 GB backup.
I was doing nothing special, just was watching a long stream video on thoughware tv (youtube video), plugged an iphone
Does anyone know how to prevent thos again and claim the space back ?
If of any help: the logs shows an error for backupd 2 hours before (error -43), and a message:
"Bulk set MDS attrs failed"
However the hour before the backup was Ok
????
+By deleting the backup , you mean the entire folder that looks like+
/Volumes/MyDiskArchive/Backups.backupdb/MyMachineName/2008-01-10-230148
Don't use the finder to delete any backups as that will probably break the hard links that Time Machine uses to keep track of its previous backups. Delete them in the Time Machine browser instead. You can read about how Time Machine uses hard links in this Ars Technica review.
http://arstechnica.com/reviews/os/mac-os-x-10-5.ars/14
+Do you know if there's a way to see what will actually be deleted so that i can identify the cause ?+
Type "backupd" in Console's search window to see just the Time Machine log. Look in particular for any -8088 errors which are known to cause Time Machine to belch a nearly full backup. Those files should be deleted or excluded from Time Machine backups by going to System Preferences > Time Machine > Options. Drag the problem file to the "Do not back up" pane or use the "+" button to add it.
The log will also give you the information about the date, time and total size of recent backups. You can ID the belched backup that way.
+I had the same problem 3 weeks ago+
Time Machine retains the first backup made at or after midnight as its daily backup. It deletes other hourly backups after 24 hours. Unless the belched backup was the first backup of the day Time Machine has already deleted it.
Whatever the source of the problem might be please report this as a bug via Apple Care or by filing a bug report through Feedback.

Maverick TimeMachine deletes old weekly backups with no reason
Hi,
I use 10.9.4 and I found that TimeMachine deletes old weekly backups so that there are now 14-days backups.
I see no reason.
To make it clearer: Old backups from 2014-04-18, 2014-05-02, 2014-05-23, 2014-06-13 and 2014-06-27 were deleted.
The log:

Any ideas?
MarkusI was about to try this, but the problem was solved - by updating to ML DP3. Time Machine was able to report more specifically a UUID mismatch - which was strange as there had been no hardware changes:
Event store UUIDs don't match for volume: MacBook Air

Upshot is that after many hours it's back, and the sparseimage has been verified.
If it's of any use to anyone finding this, I would say that the solution seems to have been a Mac OS reinstall - which is counter-intuitive, but if all else fails, give it a go! -

Hi ari.bav,
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities. It sounds like resetting the SMC and NVRAM may be good ideas here. Follow these articles for instructions:

I'm having trouble with my new iPhone.it seems it likes to turn it self off for no reason at all.i would like to know is this a hardware or software problem or just a iPhone problem i don't know.
basic troubleshooting steps from the User Guide are restart, reset, restore from backup, restore as new.
Have ANY of these been tried? -
I have downloaded all of the recent upgrades for both Itunes and Iphone. Now for some reason, not all of my songs in my playlists are transferring when I sync. Previously I have had the songs in the playlists on my phone, but now some of them are not there although they are listed and show in Itunes. Any ideas?
iTunes will only copy back iTunes purchased music. If you don't still have a copy of the music that you copied from CDs or bought from other stores anywhere (e.g. on another computer or on your backup of your library) then there are some third-party programs listed half-way this page which should be able to copy them back : Recover your iTunes library from your iPod or iOS device.

I have a carillon 25 keyboard (bad choice, I know) and I can't get it to communicate with my mac at all! I'm running logic pro 9 and reason 5. I get signal in from my M Audio trigger finger so I know it isnt an entirely mac based problem. Thanks!!!
Well, how have to determined no signal is being recieved to your mac?
Have you got something that shows the actual signal? Or have you just been trying to control a VST? What software are you using by the way?
I personnally went with a AKAI MPK25, because it's made already mapped for logic & ableton etc, so it just makes things incredibly easy.
I would suggest you return it if you can as a dead unit & perhaps look at something else a bit easier?
Otherwise, if you just want to get this working we can have a look a bit deeper.
And driver? OS X driver? -
After restoring from backup on iCloud, my photos have been "downloading" for 2 days with no progress at all. Everything else seems to by fine, however. I have all my apps, contacts, even my photostream back, but my camera roll has said "downloading 137 of 1,345" for two days. I really don't want to have to start over as the whole process took almost 3 hours. Help?
Someone mentioned that syncing with ITunes, making sure that photos are being synced - even with an empty folder, fixed the problem. I tried it and it didn't work for me. Anyone got any answers that don't include losing the photos or erasing and restoring from backup again?

Hello I bought a G-Raid GR4 4000 4 TB and used it for a backup with my new Imac27. Now this is all I get. "Time Machine couldn’t complete the backup to “G-RAID”. to complete backup. An error occurred while creating the backup folder."
Any idea what I should do?If you have more than one user account, these instructions must be carried out as an administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar.
Enter the word "Starting" (without the quotes) in the String Matching text field. You should now see log messages with the words "Starting * backup," where * represents any of the words "automatic," "manual," or "standard." Note the timestamp of the last such message. Clear the text field and scroll back in the log to that time. Select the messages timestamped from then until the end of the backup, or the end of the log if that's not clear. Copy them (command-C) to the Clipboard. Paste (command-V) into a reply to this message.
If all you see are messages that contain the word "Starting," you didn't clear the search box.
If there are runs of repeated messages, post only one example of each. Don't post many repetitions of the same message.
When posting a log extract, be selective. Don't post more than is requested.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Some personal information, such as the names of your files, may be included — anonymize before posting. -
For some reason, even though I have advanced features checked, the menu with green screen and all those isn't popping up when I drag the video on top of another one. Help?
Hi
I would trash - iMovie pref file - and re-try - sounds like this got faulty.
• Delete iMovie pref. file. iMovie pref. file resides.
Mac Hard Disk (start-up HD) / Users / "Your account" / Library / Preferences
and is named. (one or more of these)
com.apple.iMovie.plist
com.apple.iMovie3.plist
com.apple.iMovie7.plist
com.apple.iMovie8.plist
com.apple.iMovie9.plist
com.apple.iMovieApp.plist
and find
com.apple.iApps.plist
While iMovie is NOT RUNNING - move this/these file/s out on to desk-top.
Now restart iMovie.
If You run Mac OS X.7 or more - then the Library in the User-account folder is invisibly and need to be set to be viewable. IT IS NOT in the Library on Root level (when opening MacintoshHD - first window = root level)
( It can be done like this: Open Terminal, then enter:
chflags nohidden ~/Library (exactly like this - space included)
Press return, then restart, and it will always be visible until the next major update, when you do the same thing again. )

Error in backup with verification in DB13
Dear all,
I am taking backup through DB13. There is two options in that with verification & without verification. when i am taking backup without verification , it is completed succesfuly, but when i am taking backup with verification, there is some error.
I am giving the error lines....

Plz help me to solve this error.
Thanks & Regards,
Ankit GuptaThere is no problem if you delete oracle/BWD/sapreorg/bwd.data1 prior to backup. It will come again since you are using Verify option with BRBACKUP.
What happens when you use verify option is Once the backup phase is complete, all the saved files are restored from the volume (for example, tape) in sequence to the temperory directory (in this case /oracle/BWD/sapreorg), decompressed (when compress = yes was used), read by the check program, and compared with the originals. And the check program being used is dbverify (command dbv).
The problem may not be with oracle/BWD/sapreorg/bwd.data1, it may be with the original datafile bwd.data1. What you can do is,
Run dbv on all your datafiles and check for errors. (recommend to run dbv when database is offline)
If dbv returns an error, then fix that.
If there are no errors reported by dbv, then your database is perfect.
The reason why BRBACKUP gave the error in such a case, as i see it is, since you are doing an online backup, the datafile is first backed up to a backup media. Since verify is ON, the file is restored to the temperory folder. Some changes (even if minor) may occur in the datafile within this time frame and the comparison fails.
Another chance is if there is no enough space in sapreorg and the restored datafile is not complete.
If you get an error like "DBV-00102: File I/O error on FILE (/oracle/BWD/sapdata1/bwd.data1) during end read operation (-1)" on the original datafile, then, resizing of the datafile may help. Not sure though.

When is Apple going to fix the problem with slow Time Machine backups with Mavericks?
I have been with Apple tech support and they got my Time Machine working by doing a spotlight re-indexing and a safe boot. This worked for about three days and I am back to very slow backups. It is impossible for Time Machine to back up every hour when it takes six hours to do the back up. I don't want to take hours to re-index with spotlight all the time. I think taking six hours to do an incremental backup is a bit much. I see that there are many people that have this trouble and it all started with an upgrade to Mavericks. The question is when is Apple going to fix this problem of slow backups with Time Machine for Mavericks. I have wasted more time than I care to. I am think of going back to Windows. I need good solid backups of my machine and Apple has taken it away with the new Mavericks. Oh, I am using the UBS 3.0 connection so the drive should not be the problem. Also this has occurred in about the last five months, so I am not sure this problem was in the original Marvericks.
Allen Thanks for your reply. All I can say is several months ago Time Machine quit working in a reasonable manner. Right now I have a Time Machine backup that has been running all night and still has three hours to go to backup 6 GB of data. I am using a OWC 1.5 TB drive connected directly to my MacBook with a USB 3.0 connection. In the resent past I have added Dropbox, GoogleDrive and a MAMP server on which I am using a program called Learning With Text from Sourceforge. There have been a lot of questions on the forum about people having very slow Time Machine back ups, so it appears to be a general problem. I should also state I am getting this very slow backup after doing the Spotlight re-indexing and the Safe Restart procedure that was told to me by apple support. I have a 750 GB drive in my MacBook Pro which I am constantly trying to keep at a 5% level of free space. This might be a problem also. However, I am working on a lot of things and like to have a lot of things on my drive. Also the heavily loaded drive has not be a problem in the past. This slow backup business started about three months ago, so something has happen in a very short time period. Now it seems even the procedure that Apple support gave me is not working. Currently I am in China and it is difficult to interact with Apple support to solve this problem, but because I am in China having my computer backed up is critical. I have run the EtreCheck and am attaching the results below. I would appreciate any suggestions. If necessary I will clear out more of my hard drive if that appears to be a solution. The Time Machine drive was recently reformed so I only have a few backups on it. I also don't run the Time Machine all the time as I don't want multi-hour backups running all the time. I run it every few days.

HT201250 Continuing backups with a time capsule or other network cloud storage device
For over a year I used an external drive for my time machine backups. I purchased an external cloud (WD MyCloud) and yesterday I started to do a backup with it.
I read a post which stated that if you keep your external drive plugged in and then chose to replace the drive with the network drive, it will copy all the history to the network drive.
This did not exactly happen with me. So now, I have all the backups from the beginning of my computer till yesterday on an external 1TB drive, and for some reason I go as far back as about a month ago on my WD MyCloud.
I cannot copy from the external disc to the MyCloud because of the format issues. The MyCloud is formatted in exFAT so that it will work both with Macs and PCs, while my external disc is formatted for Mac only (HFS, I presume).
Is there any way that I can either somehow put the history back onto the network drive time machine backup?
Thanks for your help with this. The apple refurbished store has the Gen4 2TB for $209..
http://store.apple.com/au/product/FD032X/A/refurbished-time-capsule-2-tb
and if you are prepared to live without the warranty I see Gen4 2TB go on ebay in Australia for $150.. plus or minus. Certainly the refurbished store price sets a pretty clear upper limit.
For your situation the TC plugged into the adsl modem would still work the best. AC wireless in the latest model will do you nothing unless your MBP is brand new.. all the older ones have 450mbit on 5ghz N wireless and it works extremely well as long as you can put the TC close enough.. otherwise the 2.4ghz works fine. There is no improvement in the latest model.. same disk size.. same usb2 port.. same N wireless speed. Even range for many people is no better. Regardless of all the antennas in the latest one. Without AC wireless clients up close the two perform line ball with each other.
As long as you do the initial backup by ethernet the incremental backup are fine.
As per Bob comment.. there is no modem with USB that is going to work for this. Even on a modem that does support a USB disk, they will NOT support TM extensions.. nor will it be reliable even if it did. People quickly discover that TM is really an all Apple invention.. and locating TM backups on other devices is just bound not to be successful. Heck it is not even that reliable now with Mavericks on a TC. -
Iphone 4 will not backup with Icloud.
I have Iphone4. When I backup with Icloud the bar starts across then quits. It says "the last backup could not be completed" but gives no reason. My Ipad, wife's Iphone 4s and Ipad 2 all backup successfully.
