27" flicker black screen fix?

I was getting flicker and black screen more and more often. I talked with the first line tech and he said to run diags and see if the screen flicker. No flicker which he felt was a sign of drivers or something.
Well folks, after running complete full diags from Mac OS X disk, resetting SMC and then resetting PRAM & NVRAM (in that order), I have not had any problems (knock, knock) yet. I will be using the computer all weekend so I will report in a day or so.
Fingers crossed!!
Mike

I run mostly Adobe Master Suite apps (Photoshop, Dreamweaver and such). Also running iPhoto & iMovie daily. I have not a guess why I no longer have any issues. My usage has not changed and I was having problems 2-5 times an hour early last week.
The only changes to the system I made since then was the display sleep from 15mins to 30mins and computer sleep from 30mins to 1hr. I also changed the screen saver from Mosaic using iPhoto to Cosmos but still left it on 15 mins.
Gaming on the other hand works out the ATI video card. Don't have any games but I have tested with iTunes running movies and music videos without issues.
Probably the motto: don't fix it if it ain't broken applies here.

  • 6800LE black screen fix.

    Hi,
I am a proud Gainward 6800LE owner, but i thought i would post our findings here for you guys.  My card would only clock 300 GPU and 520 Mem in order to avoid the black screen "feature" that seems to plauge 6800LE owners when playing 3D games.
We have managed to fix this!!!!
The problem is an unstable memory V rail, that seems to cause the shutdown at default clockspeeds.  By adding an additional capacitor to the board, this rail is stabilised and the card clocks WAY higher.
You need at least a 2200 uF electrolytic capacitor and insert the +ve pin into the hole marked TP1.  the -ve pin can then be soldered to the ground (i use black wire of molex connector) or inserted into another hole in the board.
    Illustrated in this diagram http://kotinetti.suomi.net/antti.salmela/modded.JPG
    Discussed here : http://forum.gainward.de/viewtopic.php?t=721
    and here : http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/showindex.php?t=48876
My card now clocks 840 MHz memory...
Hope this helps, and be careful not to smoke yer card

    Hi all!
    P4 2800
    MSI 6800LE
Plain 300w PSU - nothing fancy
    Intel D875 MB
    1Gb Ram (DDR400)
    160GB Sata HDD
    Twin Monitors
    SB Live
Got my 6800LE a few weeks ago - didn't notice any problems to start with - too much work to play games. Then the problems started.   UT 2004 crashed within 2 minutes after starting a game. Farcry a little better, but also crashed. Started looking around on net but no improvement after trying many of the solutions.
    Crashed :
Farcry  -  no real correlation between times when game crashes
    Ut2004 - Crashes < 1 min pretty consitently
    Prince - Seems ok
Doom3 - Runs a while and crashes or doesn't crash - no consistent results???
    Tried:
    AGP Fastwrites on/off
    SBA on / off
    Compatibility mode
    Rivatuner
    Various Drivers - MSI / Nvidia / Guru3D
Removed drivers between installations with NFR
    Clearing Profiles
Messing around with cmos settings - not a lot of settings on the Intel 875 ...
Even tried win98 - problems during installation, gave up since this wouldn't be a solution anyway
    Still no luck
Decided to start testing on ut2004 since it seems to hang very soon after starting a game. <1 min
    Initial UT2004 Settings :
    Everything on highest at 1024x768 resolution (Got a 6800 haven't I?)
Turned VSYNC off - could get about two or three minutes playing time - improvement
Tried running the game at 800x600 - Playing time now up to 12 min
At this point I thought the card must have some processing limit. - the more data you push through the card, the better the chances that it will hang up.
    Final test-
Set refresh rate override to 60Hz
Turn Vsync on - this will limit the maximum FPS to about 60, reducing processing overhead of the card. Visually any higher FPS makes no diff
Set UT2004 settings to Normal - also reducing processing overhead
Lastly - set color depth to 16 bit - looks crappy, but just to test my processing limit idea.
My son tested the new settings and played UT for more than 40Min without a single problem. I then stopped the test - will still test for a longer period, but at this stage 40 min is 4 times longer than I could get previously.
    Can anybody else test this?
I have seen a direct correlation between the amount of data moved by the card in UT and the frequency of crashes.
    Next steps:
Enabling masked pipelines and shaders using rivatuner to see if this raises the processing overhead on the card.
Trying some of these ideas on FarCry and Doom3
    Good Luck!

My Iphone 4s has a black screen. If I hold down the ON button, it will occasionally flicker and then go black again.
Is it dead? Is there any way to fix it? It's sitting in a bag of rice right now, a desperate measure.

Are you saying it got water damage?  If not what mende1 suggested, or the following
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3281
is the way to proceed.  If it got wet all bets are off.

  • 2010 iMac 27 Inch flicker and black screen, not solved by firmware updates

Hi all, I hope someone can help me. I've got a 27 inch 2010 imac that has started to flicker black, and sometimes turn completely black. When this happens the only thing I can do to remedy the issue is to put the computer to sleep and wake it again with the power button on the back. I have tried using the 2009 firmware fixes floating around on the net but to no success, and having seen youtube videos of other people's flicker issues that were fixed by this, and as far as I can see it isn't the same issue. The whole screen flickers, not just a horizontal band.
I have no secondary monitors plugged in, and my only peripheral items are external hard drives. The issue still happens regardless as to what's plugged in.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I'm awaiting a call from apple support, but they have had me in a queue for a week so I thought it prudent to shop around for help.
    Cheers
    Simon

Here are other links to try: Apple Service, iMac Service or Apple's Express Lane. Do note that if you have AppleCare's protection plan and you're within 50 miles (80 KM) of an Apple repair station, you're eligible for onsite repair since yours is a desktop machine.

        Oh no Mr.Ected!
I can see if we can get your phone back on! I understand how important it is to have a phone. Have you tried this to see if we can get it back on? http://vz.to/1DZhteH . If it is still goes to a red Verizon screen and then to black we might need to do a master reset. While the phone is off try this:http://vz.to/1DZhXkU Be mindful this is the last resort because it will erase everything on the phone. If you have done back up assistant in the past you will be able to get you contacts back. Please let me know if you need any more help.

  • Can't fix fglrx/Xorg black screen issue, no matter what I try!

I've tried everything that I can think of or find online to fix this. Please help.
I'm getting what seems to be an oft-recurring issue where Xorg simply won't start when using the fglrx driver. It boots fine with VESA or Xfree86-ati, but using fglrx I just get a black screen that won't accept any input, although ssh'ing into the box while this is happening still works.
I've been reading forum posts for *days* now trying to get this to work. I've tried every combination of 12.4/12.6 drivers, Xorg 1.11/1.12 and modeset/nomodeset kernel parameters. I definitely do not have any radeon or other DRI modules compiled into my kernel. I have an HD4200, SLiM/Xfce4, and I'm using the proper catalyst-hd234k package. The fglrx module has been compiled for my kernel and added to my initramfs, and it loads at boot. lsmod reveals its presence and does *not* show 'radeon'. I have uninstalled every video driver aside from fglrx and Xfree86-vesa. Output does not seem to be going to HDMI instead. Switching consoles/typing blindly does not work, and I need to hold the power button for 5 seconds to shutdown. I've run aticonfig --initial and tried aticonfig --acpi-services=off, too.
I've tried *all* the different tweaks that I've found to try to make a working xorg.conf, but here's what I'm trying to use now:

    I'm sure you've tried reading https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=57084
    and http://wiki.cchtml.com/index.php/Configuring
    and I'm sure you've done
    aticonfig --initial
I had to use https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/AT … leshooting, specifically the part about disabling EXAPixmaps to make my card work.
What model is your ATI card? that would help. A LOT of ATI cards were dropped from proprietary support with the Catalyst driver.

Make a temporary, backup copy of your library if you don't already have one (Control-click on the library and select Duplicate from the contextual menu) and  apply the two fixes below in order as needed:
    Fix #1
Launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.
Select the options identified in the screenshot.
    Fix #2
Using iPhoto Library Manager  to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
Download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
Click on the Add Library button, navigate to your Home/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File ➙ Rebuild Library menu option
In the next  window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
    Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments but not books, calendars or slideshows. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.

  • When I plug my macbook retina into the tv with the hdmi port, all I see is a black screen with a white mouse How do I fix this?

Recently I bought my macbook with retina display and when I plugged it into the television with using the HDMi cord it worked perfectly fine with the image on the television. But now I when I plug it in to the television it comes up with a black screen and a white mouse. Before this incident I was mucking up with the setting of the mac book and I dont know what I did wrong. Can someone tell me how to fix this ?

    Howdy Lumagofe,
I was thinking that you may need to reset the iPod Nano, outlined here How to reset iPod http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1320.
Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button and Volume Down button simultaneously for at least eight seconds or until the Apple logo appears. You may need to repeat this step.
If the above step did not work, try connecting iPod to a power adapter and plug the power adapter into an electrical outlet, or connect iPod to your computer. Make sure the computer is turned on and isn't set to go to sleep. Try resetting the iPod while it is connected to power.
If that doesn't quite get the iPod going again, then it will need to be restored. Use this article to help with that Restoring iPod to factory settings http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1339.
    All the very best,

  • Black Screen iMac Late 2009 Fixed

This is just an FYI as when I had experienced my black screen on my Late 2009 Imac and read so MANY complaints
of people having the same issue I thought I would post my symptoms here. Due to the fact that my 3 year Apple care warranty
had run out I was faced with either bringing it to Apple and have them fix it or fix it myself. Taking it to Apple was out of the question
because of the amount of $$ they feel the need to charge for parts and labor.
I did my research and read many post of so many people having this issue.
Mine started one day whlile I was on my mac..my mac beeped and went black..So I replaced the memory..no biggie.
Then months later my screen would go black for no apparent reason. I would shut down, reset SMC & PRAM..It would come back for a little while
and just randomly go black. I thought maybe heat issue. So I cleaned vents & dust from fans etc.
Finally my Imac got to the point where the second I boot up..the screen would come on and immediatly go black.
I did the recommended things people had suggested.
I shined a flashlight on my mac LCD Panel while it was booted..I could faintly see my desktop folders ETC..
So I thought backlight board may need to be replaced. I purchased a new board, replaced..Not The Problem
I noticed that when booted and screen was black if I pressed the power button a couple of times the screen would come back
long enough for me to turn the brightness all the way down and still see the screen. At least this way I could run Extended Hardware
Test to see if it found any hardware issues. It found none and I ran the test 5 times. I thought this may have been power related
so I then purchased a brand new PSU from iFixit and that was not the problem.
I replaced all the lcd sync cables, temp cables, still not fixed.
Final resort. I purchased a LCD panel ( awesome seller on Ebay) used and in mint condition ( not a blemish). BINGO..
A new LCD fixed the problem. ( I did get silver tape & mylar to replace the stuff I tore off)
I have been running my Imac now for a couple weeks..non stop but I do shut down at night. I have had no issues now at all.
It feels just as nice & smooth and fast as it did from day 1.
What do I have left? A great Machine and some parts I took out as I replaced new ones and the old ones are probably good so I will have those
should my PSU or backlight goes bad. I may pick up a few more parts to have on hand and put away before it gets too difficult to find them.
I hope this helps anyone out there left with a late 2009 Imac..black screen..I am so relieved...

    Hi-
Do you notice these smudge marks with the iMac off as well? If so, it is probably just some dirt or a fingerprint behind the glass on the front panel.
Yes, Apple or any authorized repair center can do this. 5 minutes tops. You could probably do it yourself (if out of warranty, which you are not) with a pair of suction cups to lift off the glass.
Again- you are under warranty, so I most certainly wouldn't do that.
Some users post being able to get a replacement iMac while their defective unit is in the shop, but those individuals have either had a history of having problems with their order, or were especially forceful in manner.
Don't count on being able to get one.

  • My Macbook air (only 2 months old) has a black screen and I cannot see to get signed on, the keyboard seems to be on as I can see via having put on the Caps key which lights up and also the power cable when connected is at green how do I fix this?

I have been faced with a Black screen this morning when I have gone to sign in/open my Macbook air this morning.  I can see that the keyboard seems to be on as the caps key when pressed is lighting up as is my charger cable link, however have noticed that the apple logo is not lit up.  Any thoughts?

Try resetting SMC and NVRAP and then reboot.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964
    http://support.apple.com/kb/PH4405
Try booting the Recovery Partition.  Power off, boot and then hold down the Command and R keys.  Is the screen still black?  If so it is not a software problem so take it in for diagnosis and repairs.  Make a Genius Bar reservation http://www.apple.com/retail/geniusbar/ or find an Apple Authorized Service Provider https://locate.apple.com/country .
If you are running Mavericks try upgrading to 10.9.2.  It has a fix for black screen problems.

  • I am using an iphone 3Gs and Itunes won't allow me to restore it?!?! help me fix my black screen of death!

Ok, I am trying to restore my iPhone 3Gs to 5.0.1 and when I do, it looks like it is going well until it says that is it preparing to restore, it keeps me stuck at that spinning bar and then after a while it gives me the error 1601 unknown error has occurred.  I have tried looking on Google for over 3 hours now trying to find the answer to my problem and sadly I cant find one, I am trying to restore my IPhone because earlier I was playing with it and it ran out of battery and I let it change and walked away form it, I came back 1 hour later and it was still at the boot logo of apple, I waited 2 hours and it did nothing, just stayed with the boot logo.  I then put it into DFU mode and it appears in iTunes as in DFU mode and can be restored but like I said above that it just gives me an error.  I have looked into Google and tried every way possible and found out that I may have the black screen of death.  If you have this problem and found a way other than getting a new iPhone, please contact me on this page because I am not in the mood to buy a new iPhone because this one has an expired warranty.
Also i have tryed all the things in the error support page and nothing works, uninstalled itunes completely and did all that other stuff but still the same problem and i have not found a way to fix this.

Basic troubleshooting from the User's Guide is reset, restart, restore (first from backup then as new).  Try each of these in order until the issue is resolved.

  • Apple IMac 27 has a problem. Random black screen. Over 1 year without any fix

Apple IMac 27 has a problem.
    Random black screen.
Over 1 year without any successful fix.
    IMac 27 10.8.4 (12E55) - bought in 2010
3.06 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
    4GB 1067 Mhz RAM
Graphics ATI Radeon HD 4670 256 MB
The IMac computer screen goes black randomly but the machine still running beyond.
In order to go back to normal i need to awake the computer by hitting with the pointer a hot corner previously created " sleep mode" ( top left ).
..the black screen would come back after one second again..and then again and then again and then again..with different intervals..sometime 2 seconds after the other, sometime as soon as appears the user login screen.
I took the machine to an Apple Store two times over one year, they opened, cleaned it but they didn't replace anything has they could not understand what they real problem was. I was happy for that because they didn't try to make me spend money on something which was not going to solve my issue for sure.
Last time i kindly asked them to inspect everything meticulously, part by part, i left the machine with them for over 2 months. They couldn't understand why this was happening..after couple of weeks, 5 more machines came in with the same problem.
On some of them., upon request of the client they changed the graphic card but apparently this was not the fix, the problem come back again. Apparently changing the graphic card or the screen or else it didn't solve any problem to anyone. I'm almost thinking to "trough it out of the window"..we all spend money for this machines and i think we need to know if Apple is looking in to this or not.
Lately i tried to do an SMS RESET and PRAM RESET, it feels it got better a little but problem still coming back.
Also, all usb  devices are disconnected and the problem still there
Below you will see a copy of the console report. I honestly don't understand much of it as i'm not a computer guy.

I'm now thinking to try to take the machine to its original firmware and see if it still does it, does anyone have any sugestion?
I use a lot photoshop and other image software, this computer is essential for my work. For more then one year this issue caused me problems.
Luckly i have a Macbook Pro too and i managed to do some of my work there. At last I was thinking to buy an external screen and attach it to the Macbook pro in order to work on my big images. But who wants to spend money again!!!???? This is not a fixture, this is silly. I wish to have my IMAc working again.
The warranty it's obviously over and this problem happened right after the warranty was over...
I write this post because i'm so tired of this issue and online nothing can be found apart from posts from so many people that have the same problem and no fixture has been found.
The only fixture seams to be to buy a new computer... Ole'!!!..new money flowing in in the cashier!! forget it!!! i would rather change company if apple doesn't respond to this.
For over 10 years i have been a Apple owner..
When this problem appears it's like someone it's playing a joke at you...
    Comments welcome..
    Thanks

Hi, I've seem to have found out the source of the problem.
The issue is related to heat, and an iMac 27" gets hot pretty fast.
If I boot the iMac straight after first start into Windows 7 I seem to get a lit built-in display at all times. I can also boot OS X first and then into Windows 7 and the built-in screen get lit every time as long as the iMac isn't hot.
Strange thing is that the monitor connected to the display port gets lit every time. So I can only assume that the heat only interfere with output to the built-in LED screen.
So this iMac is going to an Apple premium reseller for service, and I'll tell you guys how it went.

    Try:
    - Reset the iOS device. Nothing will be lost
Reset iOS device: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Restore from backup. See:
    iOS: How to back up
    - Restore to factory settings/new iOS device.
If still problem, make an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store since it appears you have a hardware problem.
Apple Retail Store - Genius Bar
Apple will exchange your iPod for a refurbished one for this price. They do not fix yours.

A third-party place like the following maybe less. Google for more.
