27" i7 Imac heat question

Is it normal for the secondary heatsink to be hotter than the primary heatsink on a 27" i7 iMac? My primary heatsink is operating at 57c and the secondary is 77c. Thanks.

Do the Mac Pro towers have these heat and shut down issues? How about the Mac Minis? Does anybody know?
If the Mac Pro towers don't have these issues, one theory could be that the basic design of the iMac (display and CPU together in one thin box) is flawed.
I was surprised to come here to the forum and discover that the new iMacs have issues similar to what I experienced with my seven year old PPC iMac.
I had originally assumed the problem with my old iMac was that Apple got a bad bath of power supplies. Now I'm wondering if the problem is a more basic design issue.

  • IMac Intel heating questions?

    Hello everyone,
I have a 17 inch iMac Intel with 2GHZ, and according the sensors, it averages about 55 degrees C. That's about 131 degrees fahrenheit. Now is that a little warmer than usual? I've looked around and a lot of people say their iMacs average about 48 degrees C. If anyone could reply that would be great.

    Hi Rizzo41999,
55C or 131F is not unusual, that is what my Mac runs at while surfing the net or doing light work. If I do image editing or anything that uses a lot of the CPU, it will go to 145 - 150F, if I burn a DVD or CD it will easily reach 160+F
Go to this site and download iStat PRO: http://islayer.com/ - you can then tell which programs or applications cause your Mac to run warmer.
Your temps are well within normal range... Rick

  • IMacs intel question

    Hi everybody,
I am new to Macintosh and I am just about to buy an INTEL iMac, but how can I differentiate between the "old" iMac with the Core Duo processor and the very "new" one with the Core2 Duo processor ?
I am asking this Q. because my sister is buying it for me and bringing it to Mexico and she is completely computer iliterate.
So maybe a text or a logo printed outside on the box containing the computer or does she have to unpack it and look for this info printed on the computer itself?
Sorry for the dumb question, but I would like to make sure that she is not buying the "old" model.
Thanks a lot for any advice.
    Diazruanova

It will say on the box that it has an Intel Core 2 Duo. Maybe you could just explain to her the difference, and make sure she gets the one with Core 2 Duo written on it? Another thing that might be helpful to know is that the 17" model didn't come in 2.0 GHz before, it was 1.83 GHz. So if she gets a 17" iMac that says 2.0 GHz on the specifications, it's definitely a new one.

  • 27" iMac Firewire Question

    Hi Folks,
I recently got the 27inch i7 iMac. I use it for Music Production and just general internet surfing.
My question is - I current use a Firewire audio interface (M-Audio Profire 2626) and with only 1 Firewire connection on the iMac.
Is it possible to plug a Firewire external hard drive into the back of my audio device, In a daisy chain type connection
(eg - iMac TO Audio Interface TO External HD)
to store my audio files and have no latency issues?
Any help on this would be greatly appreciated
    BTD

Yes you can daisy chain them, the connection on your iMac is FW 800 so if your Profire only has FW 400 then you will need a cable like this. My suggestion would be to get an external HD that has 2 FW 800 ports (OWC Mercury, Lacie Quadra D2 or G-Tech) and you are set.

  • IMac Heat Issues

So I got concerned about my idle Hard Drive hanging out at 57c. About the power supply idling at 80c. I've had over 5 iMac replacements trying to chase this issue. All of which return to these temps. I was resigned to accepting these temperatures as normal, but now I got feedback from Apple's engineering team that these temperatures are too high and that it should be replaced....
    Anyone else going through this?

Performance alone can be impacted by the fans or processor heat, as more energy is drawn towards the fans, and keeping the machine from overheating. If you read the Energy Saver preferences, it offers the options of either slower performance, or automatic settings to change how the processor and fans react:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Mac/10.5/en/8596.html
But just because your performance is impacted, doesn't mean your machine actually is itself overheating. The true test of overheating is if you suddenly see your system shutting down on its own, without your prompting either by System Preference setting to do so, or manually from the Apple menu. The system does have safeguards if it is functioning to shut down the machine automatically if it overheats.
That's why the hardware test Apple offers is important, it can tell you if most of those safeguards are working. Otherwise, an authorized service center might have to tell you if the safeguards are in place. I've seen many cases where a fan is malfunctioning from the Apple hardware test reported here, and once even on my Powerbook. I took it in to Apple and they tried fixing it, and eventually replaced my machine.
The fact you are going through multiple replaces either tells me you have convinced the engineers each of those machines has had problems worth replacing before their even testing it, or there was a problem on some of those machines, but not others. Regardless, I would not use the heat from a third party utility report as the sole basis for replacing your machine.

  • Help! I have an imac m6498 question(s) need help on the following ASAP thanx

i found an imac m6498 at my grandmas's, its working smooth and great. However, i have these problems:
idont have admin (she doesnt remember the password nor how to remove it)
i dont have the cd repair and backup etc, nor does she
cd drive works well (i need info on how i could reset this so i could use the pc like it was new)
i was thinking of transferring mac os 9 [or leopeord, cuz i  saw a forum that its possible] into a usb ext hard drive and installing it there
the main problem is, i dont have admin. It says "you do not have access privileges"
    other questions:
is there a way / combo buttons/commands that i could do to reset, change, redeem the password.
thank you, sorry for the woording, i rushed it. heehhe

    James,
That machine is over 10 years old and is not an Intel based iMac, Apple began using Intel microprocessors in 2006 a full 5 years after your machine was made. It is a PPC (Power PC) based machine which cannot run Leopard. In other words you are in the wrong forum. You can reset the password per Resetting an account password however you need the original Install discs. If you don't have those your last option is to contact Apple and see if you can get a duplicate of the originals, you need these because they are machine specific. I suspect that due to the age of the machine you won't be able to get them.

  • Current iMac thermal question

Do the latest n grestest (17 inch) iMacs have overheating issues like the G5 PPCs did ? I'm in Houston,Tx so there is no lack of heat & humidity here and it isn't getting any cooler ...
G3 i   Mac OS X (10.3.9)   iMac in the future

    Hi,
Just so you know, G5s are not only slower, but they produce a LOT more heat. I just finished reading an article about the MacPro explaining why Apple changed the design. Their answer: "There was no need for so many fans as was needed with the G5".
    -Robert
** O and can someone tell me what the heat inside the iMac is, because the heat inside my AMD Athlon 64 during idle (no load) is 34C with a Zalman fan.

  • IMac SSD Question.

I'm just wondering if I order my iMc now (without an SSD) can I later down the road send it back into Apple and get them to put one in and I just pay for it? Just wondering.

You could take it in, but it won't be cost feasible.
I was quoted $600 to upgrade a 350GB hard drive to a larger 750GB one, the cost of the hard drive was about $200 at the time. I did it myself for $300 and got a faster 7,200 RPM enterprise higher quality level drive in the process. Of course I had a MacBook Pro that I could open and do that.
You can't open your iMac and replace the drive like you can in the MacBook Pro and MacPro lines, even if you could you don't have the proprietary software Apple places on the drive for heat monitoring and your machine  will not function correctly.
With the cost of SSD in larger capacities like 480GB running about $1200-$1500, say in a couple of years it drops to $800 for parts, with Apple's 3x markup, that's around $2400.
If you want to exchange parts, make upgrades, make your machine last twice as long, your going to have to go with a MacPro which allows for flexibility to do whatever you need to do.

  • How to install leopard on iMac g5 questions?

    hello...
i am trying to install leopard on my imac g5. I tried using a USB hard drive to use it with but people in this forum said that i couldnt...
my iMac's cd drive does not let me use my Leopard install disk.. it ejects it everytime..
Question.. How can i install Leopard on this iMac??
Can i some how use the USB HD to install it onto my main HD??
    thanks..

You may find a better answer on the "G5" forum...but, I had no problem installing Leopard on my son-in-law's 2005 G5, 20" iMac. I don't understand why it won't load from the built in disk drive since this is the way I installed it.
Are you sure that the disk you're using in the basic Leopard OS? It should work.
Hopefully you'll solve your problem in the "G5" forum.

  • In Windows 7 , iMAC heats up quickly

My iMAC 27" (with Radeon 4850) heats up quickly in windows 7 64-bit.
1- I can't have control over the graphic card because the catalyst control center doesn't get installed (no errors while installing, but can't find it after that)
2- in CPU-Z it shows fan speed is 30% and even when it heats up (sometimes up to 72 C) the fan speed remain the same and the system gets really hot.
How can I overcome this issue? this is important for me

Might be interesting to list the codecs you have installed to see if any could be interpreting the PSD format...
There's a good tool for doing that called AutoRuns and it's available here:  http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb963902
I'm not sure exactly where to tell you to look, but with the FastPictureViewer Codec Pack I see all the entries as decoders in the Everything tab, under a couple of Class IDs with Instance subkeys...

  • IMAC Newbie Question: Prior PC Guy..help

Just bought a used IMAC 20 (MB388LL/A model number) with 4gb. It has the preloaded software iLife09 and Microsoft Office 08. He states he did not have the disks for that stuff...hence preloaded. What would I do if for some reason I needed to clean the harddrive and reinstall? Is there a way to do this?
Also, it has the snow leopard on it as well...but no disk. Should there be a disk or is this preloaded? Same question, what if i need to reformat etc....how would I get the operating system back on it without having to pay for a hard copy?
Btw, I got the Imac for 500.00, and its in pristine condition. Its the 2.4 dual core, 1066 front bus, 6mb Lcache, and its been upgraded to 4gb ram.
This is the 20 inch mac.....did I do good with the 500.00 price?

The model number indicates that it is a early 2008 model.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1758
If you order/buy a mac with MS Office preinstalled, they should supply a disc (if you go into the store tab and click on configure for a new iMac and look for Office 2008 and click Learn More it says they will provide you with a disc)If iLife 09 is installed, there must have been an install disc I would think since that wasn't out in 2008 (model year for the iMac). Snow Leopard would also require an install disc as well.
Unless these were all obtained by the previous owner via torrent files (illegally) and therefore there is no disc to provide.
If you need to do a format, you can back up data in the Applications folder which would contain the Office and iLife apps. Unlike Windows, you can simply copy the app folders and they will still work when you try and open them up again. I would recomend setting up time machine with an external drive. Then you could format the drive, do a fresh install (snow leopard disc needed for same OS) and then use migration assistant to bring back your user profile and apps and all that. Chances are that if you have restore discs that came with the machine they would be for Leopard. I don't know if you can restore a Snow Leopard backup from time machine onto a Leopard install.
The price doesn't seem too terrible it's under 50% of what it would have cost new back when it was purchased.
    Hope you enjoy it!

  • Cannot install 10.5 on G5 iMac - flashing question mark

I have an iMac G5 that I am trying to install OSX 10.5 on. I get a flashing question mark and mac face folder after booting to that disk.
I was able to boot with my 10.4 disk, go into disk utilities, and erase the hard drive as per the instructions here:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2311038&tstart=0
Any reason why 10.5 will not install?

    rswurth wrote:
This disk came with another iMac (Intel) that I bought for parts.
A grey Leopard system restore disc can't be used on any Mac other than the one that it was bundled with when new. See here: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1976068
You need to find a retail Leopard install DVD (black with a big X on it) if you want Leopard on your G5.

  • Refurb imac and questions

I am going to get a referb imac for $850. Here are the specs
    - 17-inch widescreen LCD
    - 1.8GHz PowerPC G5
    - 600MHz frontside bus
    - 512K L2 cache
    - 512MB DDR400 SDRAM
    - 160GB Serial ATA hard drive
    - Slot-load Combo Drive
    - ATI Radeon 9600
    - 128MB DDR video memory
    - 56K internal modem
now, my fist question is the 512 memory in it, is it one 512 stick or 2 - 256 sticks?
I'm not an intense gamer but i play games sometimes and will the 128mb video ram be good enough? My old computer had 5mb of video ram so it should be a incredible change.
    thanks!

    Rob,
    Check here for specs:
    http://www.info.apple.com/support/applespec.html
I have bought two refurb iMacs and have been very pleased.
I do have an Apple reseller near me so getting things fixed under warranty was no problem. Strongly suggest Apple Care to prolong your comfort zone. A fraction of the cost of replacing something major.
You should also get nice new software with the Apple Factory refurb.
EDIT: Other than Apple Care I have not had to spend a penny to keep these iMacs in top form. It is used, and as I understand it, factory refurb does not replace components that appear to have useful life left even if they have some mileage. But it has been no hassle getting things replaced either under initial warranty or now Apple Care extended coverage.

  • Installing Win7 On iMac 27" - Question About Future Up

Seeing that Apple are dragging their feet on Official support for Windows 7 I've decided to follow the un-supported route of installing it on my iMac. The question I have, if I install Win7 now using the work around methods what happens when Apple do update Boot Camp to officially support Windows 7. Is it a case of just running the updated Boot Camp program to install the necessary / officially supported drivers or do I have to do a full clean re-install of the Windows 7 OS.
Sorry if my questions seems naive but Windows on a Mac via Boot Camp is a whole new ball game for me.

I'm afraid no one can answer this or give you a guarantee.
I'm even afraid these experiments could make it necessary at some point
to do a fresh install of Snow Leopard etc. too.
I'm thinking of using Parallels 5 until Boot Camp will be released, but this
is only a solution for "slow" applications. Furthermore I'm also not sure
if a deinstallation of Parallels and Windows 7 will remove/undo ALL and
not leave traces which could make problems later for a Boot Camp installation.
And maybe this all is just for a few weeks? Or maybe not? So what then?

  • Another Heat Question

Okay, so let me first start by saying that I have a extensive knowledge about computers including a diploma, a degree and multiple certifications (A+ etc).
So, my relatively new MBP was getting quite hot recently and decided to check the actual operating temperature. Very quickly I realized that it was running at a very unsafe level even when just sitting there. The temperatures are ranged from 75-105(~221F) degrees Celsius when at IDLE (80-90% idle to be specific). This is obviously a fault with either the temperature sensor, CPU or something else. Anywho I drove an hour and took my Macbook in to the apple store and left it there for two days, which was a HUGE inconvenience for me because I use it for my day to day work. They called me to pick it up and told me that they found no fault and that the computer was operating well within the realm of what is deemed a "proper operating temperature". I tried explaining what was happening but the apple store host clearly had no idea what to say and was not would not show me the report the benchmark generated.
I called the 1800 number and talked to apple support about the problem who then transferred me to a level 2 tech. I explained very calmly that CPUs were never ever meant to run this hot and that if this continued the CPU would burn out several times sooner then if it were cool. She was extremely unhelpful and all she kept doing was plugging Apple Care over and over. I told her that it seems ridiculous that I need to spend more money just to project my obviously faulty investment. I probably should have known she wasn’t going to help after she asked me if we use dollars in Canada and that she "always gets those two mixed up".
Even as I type this I have nothing but firefox and a temperature monitor open, and my computer is jumping back and forth from 70-80C. If it weren’t for Apples all mighty warranty’s I would crack it open and try and fix the problem myself. Also, these questions are probably going to get asked, all updates are done, computer is getting used on a flat surface in a very cool climate and most basic trouble shooting has been done. Also, im not using any 3rd party application that changes the fan speed.
    Any ideas?

    Hi , Intentt,
What I'm not clear about here is just what your question actually is.
Are you asking what may be causing your heat issue, or are you asking what you should do to get your computer looked at further by Apple?
If it is the former, it is going to get tedious for you and us if we keep on digging around for possibilities which you then say you have already tried. If it is the latter then the answer is simple. All you can do is try a different Apple Service Provider, or try further contact through Apple Customer Relations.
    Cheers
