27" iMac as monitor for 8-core Mac Pro with Dual DVI card... what cables?

I have a Mac Pro 3 GHz 8-core Intel Xeon processor with the NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GT card with two DVI ports for output. One goes nicely to an external JVC monitor, but I would like to get the 27" iMac as a monitor for the Mac Pro. Has anyone heard of, or done this? What cables and connectors would be required?
Cheers everyone.

Actually that is only one solution. The converter is not a cable, but a black box. So you need the two cables I mentioned to make the whole process work;
Mac pro -> DVI to DVI cable -> DVI to m-DP converter -> m-DP to m-DP cable ->iMac
This article mentions the three that have come to market.
http://lowendmac.com/ed/bashur/09db/dvi-to-mini-displayport.html
The first two are expensive and very expensive. The third does not appear to support content protection schemes, so a lot of new digital video sources would not make it to the iMac's display.

  • Is there a fix for MAC Pro with Dual video cards that randomly logs off and on?

From my readings on the Internet this seems to be a know problem.  That even furthers my frustrations with the latest OS X upgrades.  So far on both my MACBOOK PRO and my MAC PRO it has been a major downgrade as both systems are no longer stable.  Enough with my complaints...
Is there any plan to address this problem with the MAC PRO?  I can't believe 10.8.1 didn't fix it.  More can be read on it at:
    http://jvm-technology.blogspot.com/2012/08/mac-pro-users-experiencing-random-log .html
Does anyone have work around to use dual screen monitors with the system?  I have two video cards, the article says to remove one.  Has this worked for anyone?  Can I use dual screens with the one video card.  Before I go messing around with these type of things I just want to be sure that this is a real fix.  For the price of the cards and the system I really can't believe apple has this issue in the first place and has not fixed it.

Self-hosted add-ons have to be fixed for every new version of Firefox. Two to 6 months for updating an add-on is ridiculous for a program which has a new version release every '''6 weeks'''. If that extension was hosted at the official Add-ons website, Mozilla would take take care of "bumping" that extension, as long as it keeps working, for every new version of Firefox, as the new version is released.
See this thread from yesterday, I posted instructions about how to "bump" that extension for Firefox 7.<br />

You can also use this extension to "bump" an already installed extension for compatibility with the currently installed version of Firefox. <br />

  • Mac Pro with no airport card installed

I have a Mac Pro with no airport card installed....Can I just purchase an Airport express and connect by ethernet to the Mac pro.... I use Air port Extreme as my router for other computers

Yes, this is referred to as a ProxySTA in the business.
HOWEVER, this only became available with the 802.11n Express. I haven't yet seen it OFFICIAL if the new second generation still supports ProxySTA. I'm a bit hesitant to say yes, because the new express leans a little closer to the Extremes which work quite differently.  (haven't had time to test this yet myself)
I'm curious, why you don't just run an ethernet from your extreme to your Pro... I'm guessing because of the distance?

  • Best Router for both a Mac Pro with Leopard and a Dell

I have posted this question in another forum, but maybe this discussion page is the better one for my question, especially in light of all the connectivity problems I'm reading about for people who have upgraded to Leopard -
Can anyone suggest a good router to purchase that would work with no problems for a Mac Pro with Leopard?
Or, the other side of the coin - what routers have you personally had problems with?
I would be connecting to the router via an ethernet cable, but I'm looking specifically for a g and b router. I need to cover my roommate too - she has a Dell and she uses a wireless usb adapter to connect wirelessly. We have a modem (cable or DSL, I think?) and high-speed internet service.
We were previously using a Netgear router, but suddenly it won't work for more than 10-15 min before it loses connection after we reset it. And this happened before I updated to the Leopard.

Apple AirPort Extreme has served my mixed environment very well. You can buy a refurbished one from Apple and save some $.

  • 2010 Mac Pro with Apple RAID card - "Drive carrier 00:03 removed"

I've got a 2010 Mac Pro with the Apple RAID card and 4 internal identical Seagate ST32000641AS 2TB drives inside.
I've never had a problem with the RAID card (either battery or in operation) except for one thing:
Almost every time I shut the machine down (which I try to do as rarely as possible), it keeps losing Drive 3, the spare.
(See RAID Utility event log snippet below.)
[I wish I could understand why this Apple RAID card keeps losing the spare across power-cycles/reboots, but I digress.]
So I just adopted it as the spare and it spawns the rebuild and many hours later, everything's fine again.
... until the last time I rebooted (Jan. 2nd).
After the usual "I lost the spare" message upon login, it began the rebuild.
But this time, about 11 1/2 hours later the rebuild stopped and RAID Utility reported "Drive carrier 00:03 removed".
Bay 3 is now missing in the Controller view.
I powered off the system last night, and left it off overnight.  Today I took all the drives out, blew the dust off and reseated them.
Same thing.  Drive 3 is still missing, and now the rebuild task aborted.
The drive bay location shouldn't matter, right?  Can I swap the Bay 3 drive with the Bay 4 drive?
I figure one of two things would happen:
    (1) It will report Bay 3 as being there but Bay 4 as being missing, same situation as is now.  Meaning the problem is in the Bay 3 spare drive.
    (2) It will report Bay 3 as being missing (despite a 'good' drive being present) and Bay 4 will be the (unattached) spare, and the RAID set will be unviable.  Meaning the problem is with the drive bay itself, not whatever drive is plugged into it.
If "Drive carrier removed" is trying to tell me the disk is bad, why do I not see any log messages about it?  I suppose a spare that never gets used could go bad from lack of use, but ... no messages at all?

    I was talking about this.
This looks like a RAID 5 setup without the parity to me. I would said it basically a RAID 0.
Also you metioned "I guess that previous spare must really have gone 'bad', despite having never been used! "
I wiped everything out, I selected the 3 disks and clicked on "Create RAID Set" with RAID5 selected and the "Use unassigned drives as spares" option checked.  The 3rd disk has always been marked as the spare ever since then.  You do not have a choice to create a "RAID5 setup without the parity".  If I wanted a RAID0 I would have chosen a RAID0!  raidutil now says
    % sudo raidutil list raidsetinfo
                                         Total     Avail
Raidsets      Type       Drives       Size      Size  Comments
    RS1           RAID 5     1,2,3,4    5.23TB    0.00MB  No tasks running
Every time the system would 'lose' Drive 3 on boot, I would just keep rebooting until it was 'found', and then manually re-assign the now-'floating' drive as the spare - and the RAID would rebuild.
There was never a problem until the day that prompted this post - when it would not find Drive 3 no matter what I did.  I turned the Mac Pro off for several hours until the drives had all cooled down and it still did not find the drive.  I left the machine on but unmounted the degraded volume until I got the new replacement drive.
I really don't understand what you are getting at. It's like you are trying to tell me I set it up as a 4-drive RAID5 with no parity(!) and that I was in grave danger because one of the disks was gone.  The actual RAID contents (spread across Drives 1, 2 and 4) were never in danger, unless a 2nd disk had failed while the spare was not seen by the Apple RAID card.  I wasn't too worried about that happening.

  • Creating a wireless connection on a Mac Pro with no airport card.

    Hello
Forgive me if this has already been discussed but I am looking at all options to add wireless function to a mac pro with OS10.4 that does not currently have an airport card installed. My options so far are to either purchase a airport card, purchase a USB wireless dongle i.e.: D-Link DWA-140 (for which I am having trouble finding something that is compatible) or possibly using a airport express. The objective is to use it for presentations for lectures as I am using keynote and would very much like to use the keynote remote from my iPod touch (later with a iPad) so I can control my presentation wirelessly.
My question is this, will I be able to use an airport express, connect it via ethernet to the mac pro and create the wireless connection with my iPod touch? Will I require a wireless router? Or can anyone suggest an easy way to wireless control a keynote presentation with a non wireless mac.
    Thank you so much.
    Dave

This is not an exact answer to your question, but we had cable installed today (Virgin Media, UK) and the router is too far for my MacPro tower to connect. The engineer gave me a wireless dongle (the D-Link DWA-140) and said it would do the trick. After a few hours of searching online, I cannot make the dongle connect to the router, so I would recommend that you avoid this option for a MacPro. It may be possible to connect it but I'm certainly not finding it straightforward.

  • Mac Pro with Apple Raid Card - 1 drive OSX (JBOD) + 1 drive Vista?

Can anyone walk me through what I'd need to do to set up an early 2008 model Mac Pro with the Apple Raid Card pre-installed and 2 500 gig drives, so that I can have OSX on the first drive and Vista on the second?
I know it defeats the purpose of the raid card, but...
What I've done so far is:
    1. Removed drive #2
    2. Install and using Raid Utility, add the first drive as a JBOD set/volume
    3. After install, shut down the machine
    4. Re-add drive #2
    5. Restart
    6. Use disk utility to add drive #2
I tried to use bootcamp, but it only wants to put windows on the first drive - which won't work because it is RAID.

Run Vista off an ATA interface in the 2nd optical drive. There is an SATA 2 ATA adapter.
I think you can boot Vista off some RAID controllers, check out Highpoint RocketRAIDs. Should be able to configure the RR.
Boot Vista off USB is a stretch.

  • 27 inch iMac, can it be used as a Monitor for the New Mac Pro?

    Hi

I would say: yes, according to above article new mac pro should match requirements but until new mac it's not released yet there won't be more info.

  • My mac pro with dual monitors keep switching sides after reboot

    Hi all,
I am having a really weird issues with my Mac Pro after I installed Mountain Lion. I have dual ACD Monitors.  Every time I reboot, the monitors switch sides.  In other words, the monitor that is in front of me with the dock would switch to the other monitor and vice versa after I reboot.  When I reboot again, it switches back again.  This is extremely annoying.  I have had to switch the inputs on the back of my computer every time.

I hate to burst my own bubble here, but I recently added a 3rd monitor, and now I'm getting the same inconsistent monitor switching between my second and third monitors.
    Here's my set up:
    Mac Pro, OSX 10.8.2
2x2.26 GHz Quad Core Intel Xeon
    16 GB RAM
    Three Dell ST2420L display monitors
What seems to be happening now is that I get three identical 'color' display profiles. The first one seems to stay on the same monitor, but the second and third monitors now switch at random. I can't seem to get them to stay in any particular order.
Any suggestions or new approaches for solving this would be greatly appreciated!

  • How to change startup disk for a 2012 Mac mini with dual HDD and clean installed with Windows 8.1?

    Hi,
I have a Mac-mini (late 2012 model), originally with Mac OS X Maverick Server installed (with two HDD). Recently, I had clean installed Windows 8.1 on one of the HDD (worked perfectly, just slow) and swapped the other HDD (with Mac OSX) with a SSD. I then cloned the Windows OS HDD in to the new SSD. Now I am trying to boot this Mac mini from this SSD, however, since this Mac mini do not have BIOS for me to change the boot sequence at the startup, is there any one can help?
    Thank you,
    Liusc

If you boot with the Option key depressed what boot options are shown?
    Also:
    Restart your computer
After Windows is installed, you can switch between OS X and Windows. Use the Startup Disk preference pane in OS X, or the Boot Camp system tray item in Windows to select your startup disk, then restart your computer

  • How good is a Macbook Pro with dual video cards for gaming?

I've been a PC guy my whole life (aside from my iPhone which I love). My gf has been pushing me to try out a mac and considering how my PC laptops have a pretty good track record of dying on me or encountering some other problems after a year or two, I can't help but consider making the investment. The only thing is, I'm a big gamer and usually get the latest games. I'm not super tech savvy though I do my research and get a sense of what kind of specs are better and worse.
In terms of gaming, I always assumed that more ram = better. In that sense, I'm a little put off that even the most expensive MacBook Pro only comes with 4 gigs of ram (which is what my year and a half old laptop has now) especially when it seems most newer laptops have 8 gigs minimum for a fraction of the price (and 16 gigs if you're willing to spend as much as you would on the most expensive macbook pro). Does RAM somehow work differently on a Mac or is it truly that little?
Also, how does the whole dual video card thing work, does that mean I'd be having the power of those two cards put together?
Personally, I've been leaning towards the Asus G53SX-NH71 because I can buy it for less than the cost of the cheapest macbook pro and as far as gaming purposes go it seems to have more power than even the most expensive Macbook which costs over double the price.
Am I missing something here? Do the dual video cards really bring that much to the table or for gaming purposes am I better off with a PC?
    Thanks.

I've been watching this forum for years, and I'll have to say that gamers are not a big group around here.  A few things.  First, getting 8GB of RAM for the MacBook Pro is cheap.  Most people either don't care, pay Apple to do it, or, like me, DIY.  The max you put in a MBP is 8GB, so no 16GB, unless you were looking at the iMac or MacPro.
Second, there is no dual video card in a MacBook Pro.  There is an integrated video card, an Intel HD3000, which shares RAM with the CPU, or a discrete video card, an AMD, various versions on different MBP's.  The Intel is for low battery usage.  The AMD is more powerful, and it's to be used when you've got power.  The video card has more applications than just gaming, but also in video and photo editing.
No one here is going to talk you into one platform or another.  If you are only going to game in Windows, then it's a waste to get a Mac.  If you're going to game in Windows but want the Mac side to do everything else, the build quality and elegance of the Mac will far exceed most products out there.  You can run Windows in Boot Camp natively, and as I understand, gamers love it, because the Mac is actually a better Windows machine than most Windows machines.  But I don't play games, so I have no proof.
So the choice is yours.  And we could argue all day long about the side by side comparison of a cheap Windows machine vs. the Mac.  You are using the price vs. price comparison that is a false dichotomy, ignoring how one values various features.  For example, the trackpad on a MacBook Pro far exceeds (and I mean light year exceeds) anything on any other laptop out there.
I spent 10 minutes answering your question.  I'm not debating you on x vs. y.  The choice is totally on what you're going to do.  Most of us are trying to contribute to the world, so gaming is low on the needs list.
