27" iMac doesn't have correct resolution for LG monitor

Hi guys,
Hoping to find some answers here - I called Apple Care but they weren't very helpful and told me to call LG..but I really doubt the issue has anything to do with LG.
I have a 22" LG monitor that I used as a second monitor for my 24" imac. It worked great, no problems. I recently got a 27" imac and the display options don't give me the correct resolution for the second monitor (needs 1900x1080). So I can only use it at a totally blown up, out of proportion res. If I try to set it at any of the higher resolution options the monitor goes black and says "out of range".
To me, this is a problem with the iMac, not the monitor, as it doesn't seem to support the proper resolution. Am I screwed and just can't use this monitor with the new iMac?

ichbinesderelch wrote:have you tried using xrandr? xrandr -q shows available outputs, xrandr --output outputadapter(like VGA) --mode 1280x1024, as far as i can see, virtual monitor is set high enough that this should kinda work!
Yes, I tried xrandr:
$ xrandr --newmode "1280x1024" 65.0 1024 1048 1184 1344 768 771 777 806 -vsync -hsync
$ xrandr --addmode VGA 1280x1024
$ xrandr --output VGA --mode 1280x1024
$ xrandr --output VGA --right-of LVDS
At first this didn't work at all, so I tried to mess with screen resolution applet and got output on the second monitor, but not at the desired resolution.
I tried running these commands again and got output on the second monitor, but at the wrong resolution. The strange part is that the resolution I want is listed by xrandr:
$ xrandr -q

  • IMac does not detect correct resolution of 2nd monitor

    I am attempting to use my 42" LG HDTV as a 2nd monitor for my iMac. The native resolution for the LG is 1920x1080 but the iMac only allows me to select up to 1600x1200. It seems to think that the LG is a smaller screen than the iMac as well and my images are stretched. The monitors are also disproportionate, for example, if I expand a window so that there is an inch of space on all 4 sides on my iMac it will overwhelm the screen of the larger monitor so that only about 2/3 of the window is visible. It's as if the iMac thinks that the LG is in 4:3 display mode.
    I am using a mini-DVI to VGA adapter. How can I get full resolution from my 2nd monitor?

    The (analog) VGA connection is limiting your resolution. Idealy a (digital) Mini-DVI to DVI adapter and a DVI cable should allow the full resolution in Extended Desktop Mode.

  • Can't get correct resolution for second monitor

    I am trying to use two monitors with a Vostro 1400 (Intel X3100 video card), the problem is I can't set the external monitor to 1280x1024. Gnome's screen resolution program only let me choose from 640x480 to 1360x768. Besides the resolution of the second monitor, everything else seems to be working fine. Some relevant info:

    Yes, I tried xrandr:
    $ xrandr --newmode "1280x1024" 65.0 1024 1048 1184 1344 768 771 777 806 -vsync -hsync

  • Startup disk doesn't have enough memory for applications

    I keep getting this message that my startup disk doesn't have enough memory for applications, and advising me to quit apps. Even after a restart I get the same message. I am using only about 10% of my hard drive and I have 4GB or RAM. I have run Disk Utility to repair permissions, I have confirmed that my MacintoshHD is the startup drive, but still keep getting this message. I am running Snow Leopard on a three-year old iMac. What gives?

    Startup disks don't provide memory, RAM modules do. When the machine runs out of usable RAM, it uses disk space for virtual memory. Step one would be to run the Apple Hardware Test program, extended tests, and ensure that your RAM is viable. If the RAM passes those tests, download, and run Rember.

    Yes.
    But the IOS version is universal to both iPhone and iPad, so you don't have to pay again for a separate iPad version.

    iMacs take generic power cords. If it fits into the back of the iMac and an electrical socket, it'll work.
    Good luck.

  • Macbook doesn't have the right resolution for external monitor.

    I have a Macbook Pro runing OS X 10.7.5 and have a HP w1907 LCD monitor. When I have the Macbook open, I can get the proper resoulution of 1440x900 on the LCD while the monitors are Mirrored. But when the macbook is closed, the options for the LCd monitor are replaced by VGA display. The VGA Display options do not have the 1440x900 resolution option.
    What do I have to do to get my monitor's native resolution back while keeping the macbook closed.

    Aha - got luck: In Preferences/DIsplays click in the window and press 'Option' - the 'Gather Windows' button changes to 'Detect Displays' and when clicked, discoverd the correct resolution.
    That does it.

  • Correct Resolution for HDTV via DVI and ATI 9800

    I have a gigabit G4 400 and a sharp aquos 26in lcd tv. I bought a used ATI 9800 pro mac edition 128mb version. I have it cabled HDMI to DVI. So far it works fairly well, but its taken quite a few setting revisits. I'm having some resolution issues. The tv itself is supposed to only be a 720p at its highest do to the physical size. The card has the ability to go higher then that and it goes into 1080i mode, but it doesn't look as good. The smoothest setting was 1024x540 but the screen objects are to big still. 1344x756 is near the native size but not exactly (should be 1366x768) and it looks pretty good, but text is a little hard to read and kind of jagged looking. Its like you can't sit as far, but not as close as a regular display. One of the problems that I keep having is that the interlace goes weird periodically and I don't know why. It seems to happen on most of the resolutions after switching settings or resolutions from say the itunes visualizer (whichs looks way cool on the tv btw) or coming out of sleep. Then I have to go into ati displays and toggle a setting the causes the display go black for a sec then comes back fine again. I'm wondering if I need to get a component to dvi adapter instead of going the hdmi since I'll be able to force it to go no larger the 720p.
    Anyone have any thoughts on this?

    Why are you not trying to use the DVI to DVI?
    The reason the card output of 1080i does not look as
    good is because the tv is downgrading the sigal to
    720p since that is its max.
    My tv doesn't have DVI only HDMI, but I have a HDMI to DVI cable.
    So even though the tv is only supposed to capable of 720p, the card pushes it higher, then the tv the downgrades the signal again? The tv itself says 1080i when I switch it over to the HDMI input whereas my directv input signal says 720p.
    This a possible ATI driver issue (not supporting that
    res)or maybe a hz synch issue? The DVI port of the TV
    is meant for HDCP so if may have the feedback needed
    by the vid card for proper synching.
    Very curious to see what you do, because I am looking
    to do the exact same thing.
    I have a DA with a Mac 9800 Pro and want to replace
    my 20" ACD with a 26" LCD tv that can double as my
    monitor vs buying a usb tv input device for the DA.
    G4 DA DP 533, 1.25G
    Ram, 250G Sata hdd, DVDBurner     G4 iBook
    800
    Check the native resolution of the tv you're considering. It didn't dawn on me till later, but my 17in flat panel imac g4 has a better native resolution then the 26in tv. so even though its bigger, not really gaining any extra space.

    Edit > Preferences.  Select the check box for Ringtones, this will add them to the listing in iTunes.
    Not sure that really answers your question though.
