27" iMac freezing daily (late 2009)

Been having this problem for a long time...through at least 3-4 OS versions, and prior to a recall HD replacement iirc. No apparent rhyme or reason....it just locks up, including the cursor with no warning and requires a power cycle to restart. No forewarning or apparent odd behavior (aside of a general lagginess and regular beachballs that I'm guessing is more to do with it's age than anything) The only common condition I can think of it that it's always when Safari is running and being used, but since that's pretty much always the case, I don't see it as a critical data point.
It happens roughly daily, but that's likely more based on my typical usage and would increase or decrease as such. I've seen a few similar issues posted in random searches over the years, but never a solid resolution to those cases. There is lots of log activity in the seconds prior to or during these crashes, but is sadly all Greek to me.   Here is a text file of that period from today if it helps: crash0218.rtf
Spec-wise, it's a 2.8 i7, 1TB(@ prob 93% full), 8GB, ATI 4850 (512)
I keep hoping that each new OS or Safari version will magically correct it, but it doesn't seem like that's going to happen, haha, so I'd appreciate any ideas or input as this is becoming really frustrating and I'd really like to get another year or so out of this machine if possible.

Thanks for the responses.
The OS is current, just an old signature.
I've definitely had TuneUp (iTunes tagging utility) a long time, but don't remember seeing weird activity from it in the past. It's a fairly new version (~3 days) so there might be some permissions issues with it or something? It wasn't running at the time, nor was iTunes.
Here are the Etrecheck results:

  • IMac 27-inch, Late 2009 Freezes - OSX 10.9.5

    Greetings everyone,
Since a few days ago (today is Sept, 25th 2014), after I have applied an update for Safari and iTunes, when I play World of Warcraft for a few minutes, a flick happens and only the mouse pointer moves on the screen. No keyboard response, nothing else.
I have to turn the machine off so I can try using it again.
I have read a lot about this kind of problem on forums and they seem to be either related to age or RAM (so experts recommend to clean memory slots and vacuum out the dust from the air holes to facilitate the cooling, but I haven't tried yet.
I did some search and could gather some information with EtreCheck that I hope will be of any use for those that could land me some help.
Before showing the info, please do not bother for the etc/hosts number. I have changed this list myself to avoid publicity on my machine before Adblocker was created :-D

I have a late 2012 iMac and a late 2009 mac mini.  I want to know if I can take the 8 GB of ram from the iMac and install it in my mac mini.
According to Cruicial my mac mini could use:
    Module Size: 8GB Kit (4GBx2)
    Package: 204-pin SODIMM
    Feature: DDR3 PC3-8500
    Specs: DDR3 PC3-8500 • CL=7 • Unbuffered • NON-ECC • DDR3-1066 • 1.35V • 512Meg x 64
Also According to Cruical my iMac uses:
    Module Size: 8GB Kit (4GBx2)
    Package: 204-pin SODIMM
    Feature: DDR3 PC3-12800
    Specs: DDR3 PC3-12800 • CL=11 • Unbuffered • NON-ECC • DDR3-1600 • 1.35V
I want to increase the ram in both computers.
So,  can I put the iMac ram in my mac mini and then I'd only have to buy ram for my iMac?  Naturally the ulitmate test will be when I actually install it,  but having an expectation of success or failure will allow me to plan on what to spend money on.
    Thanks,
    Bear

Thanks for the responses.  I probably wont even try as my priority is Ram for the mac mini.  2 is not enough.  8 for my imac is okay for now.
Somewhere I thought I'd heard that faster Ram would simply clock at the lower speed.  It seems that I am incorrect.
    Thanks,
    Bear

These instructions must be carried out as an administrator. If you have only one user account, you are the administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
    Step 1
For this step, the title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select
SYSTEM LOG QUERIES ▹ All Messages
from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
              View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar at the top of the screen.
In the top right corner of the Console window, there's a search box labeled Filter. Initially the words "String Matching" are shown in that box. Enter "BOOT_TIME" (without the quotes.)
Each message in the log begins with the date and time when it was entered. Note the timestamps of the BOOT_TIME log messages, which refer to the times when the system was started. Now clear the search box and scroll back in the log to the last boot time when you had the problem. Select the messages logged before the boot, during the time something abnormal was happening. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.
For example, if the system was unresponsive or was failing to shut down for three minutes before you forced a restart, post the messages timestamped within three minutes before the boot time, not after. Please include the BOOT_TIME message at the end of the log extract—not at the beginning.
If there are long runs of repeated messages, please post only one example of each. Don’t post many repetitions of the same message.
When posting a log extract, be selective. A few dozen lines are almost always more than enough.
Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.
Please don't indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Please don't post screenshots of log messages—post the text.
    Step 2
    In the Console window, select
DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE INFORMATION ▹ System Diagnostic Reports
(not Diagnostic and Usage Messages) from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
              View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
There is a disclosure triangle to the left of the list item. If the triangle is pointing to the right, click it so that it points down. You'll see a list of reports. A crash report has a name that begins with the name of the crashed process and ends in ".crash". A panic report has a name that begins with "Kernel" and ends in ".panic". A shutdown stall report has a name that ends in ".shutdownstall". Select the most recent of each, if any. The contents of the report will appear on the right. Use copy and paste to post the entire contents—the text, not a screenshot. It's possible that none of these reports exists.
I know the report is long, maybe several hundred lines. Please post all of it anyway.

I'm having the same problem. What software do you have installed (Aside from ilife and OSX) ?
    Hello, basically my software are:
    Aperture 2
    Fusion 3
Microsoft Office 2004 (and most of the time word crashes as soon as it's started)
    Firefox 3.6
    Qpict 7.1
    Adium 1.3.6
plus other software that I use sporadically (muCommander, Filezilla).
I connect to several external hard drives, I use cisco vpn client and >Microsoft RDP client often. If I can't find any helpful information I'm going >to start removing things 1 by one until I figure this crap out.
Well, during the past weekend, the possibility that the bug maybe caused by Firewire devices is dramatically increased. If it's true, the problem effect Snow Leopard in general and not only the iMac.
Yesterday I connect my MacBookPro 2.2 (3GB RAM 10.6.2) to the external devices (one Packard Bell 250GB FW-400 connected to one Lacie 1TB FW-800) because I had to move several files from one disk to the other (procedure that I've started with the iMac and never completed).... well the 4 year old MBP that never had a problem, crashed completely three times!! :O
The first time the spinning ball appeared (same bug behavior as on the iMac), the second time the mouse stopped to move and the last one (I had the screen dimmed) the screen remained black.
I'm really starting to think that something at kernel level that handle firewire devices has some severe issues if some particular conditions happens.

  • Windows 7 OK on Imac 27-inch (late 2009) but NO sound

I managed to successfully install Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit using boot camp through the drivers download (late 2009 imac 27inch drivers) from a USB drive. HOWEVER there is NO sound at all. When using MACOSX on the same machine, all is OK. According to Windows, drivers are OK.
Have installed relative Realtek drivers to no avail. Some say Cirrus logic are OK, but cannot find them.
    1. where in the Apple "late 2009 imac 27inch drivers" files are the sound drivers ?
    2. which drivers do I need considering apple does not indicate manufacturer of sound card ?

iMacs do not use standard graphcis cards as used in typical tower computers. They use a special version that is a very strange-looking bit of kit:
You must replace it in kind with one intended for the same iMac model, and those are not sold as after-market parts. There are some out there that are used/pulled, but the switch-out requires a very tedious teardown to accomplish.

  • IPad 2 can't pair with iMac wireless Keyboard (late 2009)

ipad 2 will not pair with wireless keyboard that came with iMac late 2009.
I've read countless ways to do this in support forums, but no matter what I do, I can not get the ipad 2 to work with my wireless keyboard.
In settings>bluetooth, I UNCHECKED discoverable for the keyboard, as I've read many times.
I then clicked the minus button and a box came up ( I can not recall what it said but it basically asked if I wanted to ?remove? the device, and I clicked OK.
Then, I went to the iPad 2, into bluetooth, and went to pair it. The keyboard was discoverable, and then something with a code came up on the iPad screen, and I clicked OK.
NOTHING happened, even though it said it was connected.
I looked at my iMac screen, and there was something there with a code that had to be typed in? This is where I get confused. I disconnected the keyboard, yet I got a box on the iMac screen, asking me to put the code in to pair it with the ipad 2 !  I figured it must be a mistake, because I disconnected the keyboard from the imac.
well, I tried to key in the code and it worked on the IMAC...which, technically, it should not have been able to do.
I've watched countless Youtube videos, read through the support forums here and...I can't find anyone with  this same problem and so, I toss it out to you all in Apple Support.
What could I be doing wrong??
    Thanks.

Spoke with an Apple Care Tech today on this issue:
Apparently, this is how it works : First, you have to go to BLUE TOOTH and when you see your keyboard, delete it or remove it, and then shut down the computer.
Then, you must go to your iPAD. (initially, your blue tooth on iPAD should be TURNED OFF- now, turn it ON.
Press and hold the button on the right side of your keyboard for 5 seconds, and watch for it to blink then go off.
Next, push the button on the side of the keyboard again, it will go on.
On your ipad, under Blue Tooth, you will see some numbers and it might say NOT CONNECTED. Click that.
Be patient and then under that, something like YOUR NAME KEYBOARD will appear. Click it and it will give you a code to type in. Type it in. Be patient. Might not take the first time. Do it again. When the code comes up again, type it in again.
This worked for me as suddenly the keyboard was paired with the iPAD 2.
When you want to unpair it, turn blue tooth on the  ipad OFF. Turn your computer back on. Initially your screen will come up to sign in (if you have it set up that way). In a few seconds, you will see that your keyboard has reconnected to your Mac. Sign in and that's that:)

  • IMac 21.5 (late 2009 ) supports GPU Sensor Monitoring?

I've had this question up on the Intel Mac forum for a number of days now without being able to resolve this issue. I'm posting it here on the chance someone who hasn't visited that forum may come along who may be experiencing this.
I'm trying to determine if this computer doesn't support GPU monitoring for the Nvidea GeForce 9400 (I think it probably does for the ATI Radeon card), or if I have a defective sensor. I've reset the SMC to no effect and run the Hardware Test, which found no problems.
I'd really appreciate knowing if anyone who has an iMac 21.5 or 27 (late 2009, i.e. not the models just released), or any other model with this graphics chipset, and running a program that reads data from the sensors, such as Hardware Monitor (or Temperature Monitor), iStat Menus (or Pro) or anything similar, is not (or is) getting any sensor readings for the GPU.
(I've been in touch with the developer of Hardware Monitor who was not able to answer this question definitively.) Thanks.

    Last try.
I'd really appreciate knowing if anyone who has a late 2009 iMac 21.5 or 27... is not (or is) getting any (temperature or load) readings for the GPU / Graphics Card (Nvidea GeForce 9400.)

  • Yesterday I installed "Mavericks" on my two identical machines (office and home, iMac i5 27'' late 2009) and now the cursor freezes for a few seconds after quitting an application on one machine and the the track pad stucks with safari - unsatisfying!

Even the back and forward buttons do not work than. Allover the complete installation process went different on both machines. One started the installation twice immediately after completion. I dont know what's wrong, I never have had such a trouble with Mac OS. I can't help myselfe an I am highly disappointed about Apple!
    Markus

After a few Google searches and a few downcasted days, I had to realize that I have to apologize to Apple, it was seemingly not alone their fault.
All trouble makers to Mavericks are accumulated in my environment:
External WD hard drives get in conflict with the nem Mavericks OS X, as well as drivers software from Logitech (LCC), which all is in use with my system.
Delete the WD software of external hard discs and uninstall (use uninstaller) the Logitech control center (LCC) and all is fine again.
Have fun with Mavericks, a just started to love it....

  • IMac freezes daily

My 2-year old iMac desktop using OS X 10.9.1 has developed a worsening problem of freezing roughly once a day and having to be restarte, often more than once before it is functional again for anbother day or so. It is not being heavily used at all. It has 4 GB RAM. Any suggestions?

  • Upgrade iMac 21'5 (late 2009) HD to SSD

    Is it possible, and how?

    Here's a tutorial: http://www.ifixit.com/Guide/Installing+iMac+SSD/8905/1
But I can't see what iMac (model) it is.
    Anybody knows?
