27" iMac (NON RETINA) video card configuration options!?

Hello,
Regarding the 27" iMac (NON RETINA) model, you have the option to upgrade to either the 2GB NVidia card or the 4GB NVidia card.  I was wondering if the 4GB card is really necessary or if the 2GB card would be more than enough for my needs?  I basically use a computer for normal/everyday tasks (such as E-Mail, web surfing, chat, webcaming, watching videos (which will include streaming/mirroring with Airplay to my HDTV), basic photo editing, occasional video editing (again basic personal/everyday types of editing) etc...
I am coming from a Windows world where every thing freezes up on me (I can't even use Facebook on my current Windows 8 machine without Facebook constantly freezing up on me) it's driving me insane!  Granted I have a very cheap laptop right now so I'm sure most of the problems is related to the hardware but I don't want to have to deal with this if I move over to the Mac world so I want to make sure I get what I need.
I'm assuming a 4GB video card is perhaps overkill for me but wanted to make sure before I order.
Thanks!

Are you saying that for video watching (either local media or online streaming), airplay to Apple TV, personal video editing (home vids etc) that the video card does not improve performance, whether it's a integrated card, 512MB card, 1GB card, 2GB, card, etc?  If so I never knew that lol, I always thought the larger the video ram was the better overall performance your display would provide.
So if I got the standard 1GB card with the 27" model, you are saying that would provide the same performance to me as if I upgraded the card to the 2GB or 4GB card?  If so I feel really stupid right now...
I am, my 2011 27" iMac with a 512GPU supports Airplay and 2 AppleTV's perfectly!

  • Video Card and Video Card Configurations for MacBook Pro

Does anyone know where I look to confirm which video card is in my MacBook Pro and also examine the current configurations and possibly look at configuration values for the video card.
I'm kind of new to Mac, but on the Windows world I would right click on the screen and then navigate to the Advanced Video card configurations. Is there something analogous in the Mac world?
    Thanks again.

    Hi Jason,
use the System Profiler app from the Applications/Utilities Folder to 'examine' the insides of your MBP.
You can also click on the Apple Icon in the Top Menu, choose About This Mac and the the More (Further) Informations button. (I have a german OSX...).
The only avaiable configuration options are found in the System Preferences (Display and Energy Savings).

  • Trying to install Bootcamp 4 with non Apple video Card

    Hi folks
So I had to buy a new video card (ATI HD 5850 1 GB DDR5) but of course, I lost acces to the boot screen, so I'm wondering how to install Bootcamp, since I don't have acces to the boot screen. In some point of the Bootcamp installation, the Mac re-boots but it freezes or something like that, so I have to turn it off.
For the other hand, I have the original nVidia 8800 GT which came with the Mac Pro, but's fried and it only works on safe mode. So I'm wondering if it's possible to install Bootcamp by using the 8800 GT in safe mode.
After failing on the Bootcamp installation, I have seen that the OSX already created a Bootcamp partition but in FAT 32 and we know it's neede din NTFS or such. So I was wondering if there is a way to sort this out somehow.
I also have another Bootcamp with Win7 in other hard disk, but quite small, so now I have an empty disk of 300GB, I would like to put all the windows stuff there.
    So:
    1. It seems I cannot use the new video card because of the boot.
    2. It seems I cannot use the old video card because it's fried.
    3. The Bootcamp partition is already there but in FAT 32.
    Any ideas?
Meanwhile, I'm going to try some kind of "ideas".
    Thanks in advance!
    Ø3

Then I google it and I found my thread... Mmmhhh... :/ Anyway, somehow, when Mac boots in order to perform the Win7 installation, after the Apple' chime, a BIG and BLACK pixellated apple apears on a super white background. While it stays, the disk is scratching the surface, then appears an icon of a Folder with an ? on it, The again, the big apple and the scratch, then a Ø symbol ^^ and again, the  with the scratching sound and loops all the time there... I think it's because the non apple video card. But how can be possible... Installation is just, you know, a pair of graphics going there, not OpenGL stuff! xD

  • Non-workstation video cards OK in D10?

I'm hoping to order a D10 very soon now.  Reading this forum has answered most of my lingering questions (thanx!), except for a couple quick ones about video cards:
Question 1: The graphic cards offered by Lenovo are all from NVidia's "workstation" line.  My question is: is there any reason I can not use one (or two) of Nvidia's current gaming cards with the D10?  Specifically, I have a GeForce 9600GT card that, on paper at least, beats the pants off Nvidia's workstation cards until you get up to the FX3700s or so, and at a better price point.  Also, this card uses a six-pin PCI-E power connector, which is what I understand is provided by the D10's power supply.
Question 2: since I don't hear Lenovo making any noise about it, I assume that the D10 does not support SLI, correct?  I can still use two matching Nvidia cards, but they won't be linked via SLI...right?
Question 3: anybody know if it's possible to order a D10 without a graphics adapter?  The US site doesn't allow me to configure one that way, but maybe a phone call can make it happen?
Question 4: I've been reading of months-long waits for the D10s.  Is that still the case, or is the US site's estimate of 2-3 weeks accurate these days?
Thanks in advance for any help!

    welcome to the forum.
1:  you may use a 9600GT without a problem.   it may "beat the pants off" of a quadro in games but i know first-hand that it won't beat even the FX 370 in 3D CAD apps.   i had an 8800GT for a few days to test and the 370 killed it in solidworks 2008.   the FX 3700 absolutely annihilates them all.
2:  SLI is unfortunately not supported.   i asked about this after getting my FX 3700 as i wanted to run two in SLI mode.   it might happen in future models but it's tough to say.   thankfully the 3700 leaves nothing to be desired in terms of performance.   i can't speak to needing SLI in gaming as i'm not a gamer.
3:  your only option is to get the cheapest card and removing it.   i bought mine with the FX 370 with full intention of never using it because the 3700 wasn't available as a factory option at the time.
4:  my D10 was built and shipped in about a week.   unless things have changed, delivery times are markedly better than initial release.

  • IMAC 24 Inch Video Card

Can I or Can I have apple eventually upgrade the video-card on the 24 inch IMAC?

At this point in time no. The card is supposely removable, but since the inception of the mxm socket, no 3rd party company has released a retail mxm card. They have all been produced only for oem. I don't see that changing in the future. The bottom line is, if you want the upgraded video card, get it now.

  • Considering a refurbished 24" Imac ... video card question?

I've been a lifelong Microhell Winblows user and am finally ready to move over to an Apple. I don't have a lot of money to drop on a Mac Pro with a separate screen so I've been thinking either a 20" or 24" iMac. Then, of course, bumping it to 4 gigs of RAM. My question is the video card. I occassionally play with Photoshop and Illustrator (for web site design). I watch DVDs and play some games.
My question is whether it is possible (or even necessary) to upgrade the 256 MB video card to a 512 in the iMac 24" (or 20") model? This is the one I am looking at now: http://store.apple.com/1-800-MY-APPLE/WebObjects/AppleStore.woa/wa/RSLID?nplm=FA 878LL/A
Any idea's? Issues? Things I should be concerned with? I will be adding on the 3 year AppleCare plan.
Thanks in advance for any all help you can give.

OK. One more question (if you don't mind). They are not made to be user upgradeable. I'm ok with that. Do you know if the motherboard and/or system will accept a larger video card if I have it done by an Apple technician?
    Thanks again.

  • 24" 2008 iMac with busted video card, advice needed.

I have a 2008 24" iMac in which the video card is busted. The machine will turn on, get to the log in screen with no issues, however there is absolutely no video output to the screen.
I have attempted connecting it to an external monitor using mini DVI to VGA and a VGA cable, but the machine is not set to display to an external monitor.
Having the video card replaced will cost in the region of €300, an amount I'm reluctant to spend on a machine which is seven years old.
I have it backed up, so I'm really looking for advice to to how to wipe it so I can sell it on for parts, or other suggestions...

Your welcome, your new iMac likely does not have a Firewire port so you will need a Thunderbolt to Firewire adapter like:
    http://store.apple.com/us/product/MD464ZM/A/apple-thunderbolt-to-firewire-adapte r?fnode=51
I noticed several available on E-Bay however where you decide to get one is totally up to you.

  • Uhhh... My iMac has no Video Card?

So I bought a 20' inch 2.4 Ghz iMac with 2 GB of memory because I knew I'd be playing games... But I downloaded Aspyr's Game Agent and all games came up as unplayable because I had no video card........... Are you kidding me........?

It's probably a problem with that specific game and the iMac video drivers. Hopefully Aspyr has some information about it on their support page or in their user forums. You might check and see if they have an update patch posted for the game.

  • Can you run a non supported Video card on the boot camp side ?

My dilemma: I'm using a mac Pro for work plus a PC for gaming, and I'd like to get rid of the extra PC. The stock card on my Mac pro (7300?) is not good enough for gaming, but fine for everyday stuff... I'd like to know if I could install my better card (from the PC, 512MB pci express Nvidia) in the Mac pro...
Of course it is not supported on the mac, so I was wondering if it could be installed a a second card and "ignored" on the mac side, but if could be used on the PC side of my Mac (boot camp), with existing drivers, for better gaming performance. And make that card the primary on the PC side... Sound hard to do though... Has anyone done this before?

itll be a 50/50 shot as its an issue between efi vs bios. and unsure if you have both cards in there it will guarantee that windows will pick up the second card when booted.
but there have been users who have swapped in PCI-E Windows cards for use when specifically for using Bootcamp. so its a possibility thatit will work.
im just not 100% sure if it will be recognized right off the bat when booting it if you still have the stock mac video card in.
but if it does work just goto the Manufactures site for drivers to install for Windows.
let me know how that works, asid like to know personally myself.

    Greetings,
I have a Pavilion p6210f, whose PSU I just replaced with a 600W Corsair (http://tinyurl.com/7nnjfmb). I have been trying without avail to pick an appropriate video card to take advantage of the new PSU to get some decent gaming power. Any suggestions?
    Thank you,

Take a look at these nVidia cards... GTX 550 Ti, GTX 560 Ti, GTX 650 Ti, GTX 660 Ti  and these AMD cards... Radeon HD 6850 or higher, Radeon HD 7850 or higher. Try to keep the length below 11 inches.

  • Will other non-supported video cards work with premiere pro?

I have some older Dell Optiplex 755 and 760's that have limited space for graphics cards.  Most everything that I find that will fit or I can afford are not on the Premiere Pro system requirements list of supported cards.  Will others work?

Initial benchmark results with AMD cards show they are about two times slower than equally priced nVidia cards.
From: Tweakers Page - What video card to use?
To say that one solution is 2X faster across the board on comparably spec'ed cards would be incorrect.
    Based on ...???
AMD and Intel cards used with the perpetual license are at least 10 x slower than nVidia cards when hardware MPE is turned on.

  • IMac 21.5 Video Card Replacement?

    Hi all,
I have been searching everywhere to find out if i can replace the graphics card on my iMac.  its a late 2009 21.5 iMac and I've tried everything i can to try and get a work around.  i currently don't have a keyboard/mouse, and have stripped the screen out of the tower to find more information.
my problem was that the mac booted fine, id hear the chime, fans, HDD, but no screen.  used a flashlight to see if it was the backlight, nothing. searching for the serial says theres 2 possible configurations, and i fear that mine is not a replaceable card.  serial is W89410H75PC and the model is EMC-2308.  i'll try and attach a photo of the 'foot' of the machine so everyone can see all the info i can.  i also tried to attach a second monitor, a samsung tv which i use with my macbook pro, but had no luck.  whilst stripping it out, i had a go at looking at the diagnostic LED's, and i think i saw 1 ON, 2 ON, gap, 4 ON. but they are hidden by the bezel/faceplate at the bottom and its hard to work out which is which.
thanks for any help, this mac was a discarded item, so ideally id like to try anything to get it working and even soldering a new board on if i can source a replacement is a realistic option,
    regards,
    Alex

  • IMac Late 2013 - video card and display totally glitches

    HI.
    Today, something strange is happened.
Looks like the video or display in my iMac Late 2013 is totally broken. I don't know what to do now.
Teh screen is always blinking, glitch and unresponsive. Impossible to use the mouse. I can see partially only 10% of the screen with a distortion from the top of the screen..... It's annoying. imac is almost new, I've bought it and started use it from the January 2014.
The problem is - that in my country (Belarus) there are no any official apple service...
as I understood  - need to replace gpu, but gpu is an Intel Iris Pro. And I guess replacement will touch all the board.
such a problem... I hope there is a way to fix somehow?
    A Little bit details:
iMac was not overheated. there was not any damages or something else. iMac is standing on the table and used maybe for a 5-8 hours in week. Without any hard load (graphic load). So this is double strange for me. Looks like factory defect or something like this.
    Im very upset.

    Thanks for the reply!
I've tried to unplug everything (before was plugged only a4tech mouse and HP printer), and reboot the system. Nothing helps . i've performed reboot about 10 times. Also I've tried to reset SMC (unplug power cord for 15 sec, then plug 5 sec after, cmd opt p r) so sad. I can't use apple service in my country because of lack of service at all, only unofficial... Anyway thanks for replies... I will try to find the way to transport iMac to the nearest country with an apple service.... So sad, it was never happened with me, first critical issue with an apple device.

  • Imac 27" 2011 video card replacement program

    Hi all,
I purchased a mac in november 2011 (no applecare). Since a few weeks my mac is showing the known issues.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS5167
When I boot my mac I the grey startup screen with vertical lines in it. Then the screen goes black and stops. I went to an apple service point and they told me its 100% the graphics card, but if they run the test to detect this specific problem it does not give any error thus unabling me to take part of this program. I discussed this with apple support and even the senior advisor cant help me. I referred to getting a CS number but he does not want to.
He said that it probably is the graphics card, but probably not that specific component that would give errors when they test the graphics card. Ofcourse for me that doesnt matter which component of the graphics card is faulty, because it all relates the Imac having the same symptoms.
Anything else I can do here ?
