27" iMac power cord vs 20" power cord???

Will it matter if I use my old 20" iMac power cord for my new 27" iMac? I think they are the same but wanted to check first.
Reason why I'm asking is because my new 27" iMac i7 randomly shuts down with no warning. I searched and found out that this has happened to others as well. Supposedly resetting the SMC will help but it did not for me. Last time it did it I heard a faint click right before it shut down, first three times it did not do that. I've lost hours of work and am really ticked off. I have a new machine on the way and hope its an isolated problem. I'm running latest OSX with all updates.

Won't matter a bit. There is absolutely nothing special about those cables except the little bit of plastic that makes it sit flush with the rest of the case when plugged in. You could steal an AC cable from an old PC if you wanted, wouldn't make a bit of difference.

Use the uninstaller provided with the Sophos software. You can uninstall CUDA via the preference pane. Be sure you remove the com.nvidia.CUDA extension which is located in the /System/Library/Extensions/ folder. Not sure if Fan Control has an uninstaller so you will have to do it manually:
Uninstalling Software: The Basics
Most OS X applications are completely self-contained "packages" that can be uninstalled by simply dragging the application to the Trash. Applications may create preference files that are stored in the /Home/Library/Preferences/ folder. Although they do nothing once you delete the associated application, they do take up some disk space. If you want you can look for them in the above location and delete them, too.
Some applications may install an uninstaller program that can be used to remove the application. In some cases the uninstaller may be part of the application's installer, and is invoked by clicking on a Customize button that will appear during the install process.
Some applications may install components in the /Home/Library/Applications Support/ folder. You can also check there to see if the application has created a folder. You can also delete the folder that's in the Applications Support folder. Again, they don't do anything but take up disk space once the application is trashed.
Some applications may install a startupitem or a Log In item. Startupitems are usually installed in the /Library/StartupItems/ folder and less often in the /Home/Library/StartupItems/ folder. Log In Items are set in the Accounts preferences. Open System Preferences, click on the Accounts icon, then click on the LogIn Items tab. Locate the item in the list for the application you want to remove and click on the "-" button to delete it from the list.
Some software use startup daemons or agents that are a new feature of the OS. Look for them in /Library/LaunchAgents/ and /Library/LaunchDaemons/ or in /Home/Library/LaunchAgents/.
If an application installs any other files the best way to track them down is to do a Finder search using the application name or the developer name as the search term. Unfortunately Spotlight will not look in certain folders by default. You can modify Spotlight's behavior or use a third-party search utility, EasyFind, instead.
Some applications install a receipt in the /Library/Receipts/ folder. Usually with the same name as the program or the developer. The item generally has a ".pkg" extension. Be sure you also delete this item as some programs use it to determine if it's already installed.
There are many utilities that can uninstall applications. Here is a selection:

Be sure to remove your two Login Items. Finally do this:
Reinstall Lion, Mountain Lion, or Mavericks without erasing drive
Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Repair
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported then click on the Repair Permissions button. When the process is completed, then quit DU and return to the main menu.

How do I determine the correct power adapter/cord for the Power Mac G5 A1177 EMC 2023? I suppose I would need a part number or identifier to look for a replacement.
So far, I haven't been able to determine the answer from Apple's support search or other search methods. I do not have an original user's manual but the one I found on the net doesn't specify the correct power cord.

2008 iMac 8,1 still won't power up after replacing power supply

A few days ago my iMac powered-ON as usual at 8AM and was working normally, I checked email and left for a meeting. When I returned 30 minutes later my office had a slight odor of hot bakelite and the screen was dark, instead of displaying the screen saver. Thinking the power may have blinked, I pushed the start button on the back and nothing happened, tried several more times, then depressing and holding, still nothing - absolutely lifeless.
Presumed it was probably the power supply, so took it into the Genius Bar and my suspicion was confirmed; they checked the LEDs and advised that the power supply was mostly bad. Despite the hassle, the solution seemed simple enough: replace the power supply and I'd be back in business. That proved to be wrong!
Bought a new (NIB) power supply from a reputable dealer and carefully disassembled/reassembled the iMac feeling ever so confident that I'd hear the chime and fan whir when I depressed the ON/OFF Button. To my total disbelief nothing has changed! Its still dark and lifeless as before. Not discounting a theoretical chance that both power supplies could be bad I'm puzzled what to do next and where to look. Obviously, there isn't much in line ahead of the power supply, but given the fact there is no fan noise and no glimmer on the display, I can't fathom it could be anything other than something between the power cord and the power supply.
What could have caused the hot bakelite smell? The original power supply had NO bakelite odor and no burned chips, traces, scorched transformer windings or cooked capacitors. That had surprised me, so sniffed around the motherboard/backplane and detected a slight bakelite odor at or near the hard drive; I haven't cracked the case yet to examine the HDD - but, even if it were dead, I'd still hear the chime and fan, and maybe see at least a slight glow on the display, right?
And so, I'm calling on all you "pros from Dover" for some insights, wisdom and pointers to help me diagnose the problem and get the thing fixed. Your thoughts?

My assumption is the same as KT’s, the logic board fried. If the logic board is functional, even if the hard drive is dead, it should power on and perform the POST. Since it isn’t my advice is the same as KT’s - hope you don’t need Snow Leopard to run some older program(s).

1st-gen iMac G5 is having weird power or startup issues...?

Hello all... I am a sorta-nerd who doesn't know what to do with the power issues on her hubband's iMac G5.
The computer is just out of warranty. For the last 9 months it'd been shutting down randomly on him - usually when running too many programs. I used it for two weeks, being careful not to run more than 3 applications, and it was ok.
Now, in the last week or so, it's unable to start up. When you press the power button, the power light turns on, and you can hear the disks start up and the whir of the... fan? I think? Anyway, after about 4 seconds the power light goes out, and the display never changes from black. You can still hear the disk running, though. It will continue running until the computer is unplugged.
I have tried a new power source and a different power cord. I have also tried resetting the SMU, to no avail.
I've done some hardware geek stuff, but only on PCs and laptops. The earlier issue (of shutting down when too many applications are being run) makes me think it could be faulty RAM. Any ideas what the issue could be, and if I could fix it?

I'm not sure this is the case, at least on the newer iMacs. Some ports will adequately power some devices (most notable the USB Suerdrive) while others won't. Or, this has been the case recently, anyway; USB with Apple devices seems hopelessly arcane anyway, which makes no sense at all!)

Help - nonworking 1st Gen iMac 20" with bulging caps (power supply)?

I have a 1st Generation (Rev. A) iMac G5 that does not power on. I looked at the logic board, and all of the capcitators appear OK. None are bulging. Most have a "K" on them, some have the infamous "X."
I took my iMac into the Apple Store Genius expecting to be covered under one of the iMac G5 extended repair programs for out of warranty iMac G5s:

I did not qualify for either, as the one is only for video AND power issues, and the other only for Rev. B iMacs.
So I took my iMac home looking to buy a power supply. I took the power supply out and opened it up and found all "X" capacitors, some of them bulging.
So what is my next step?
• Should I phone Apple Customer Relations at 800-767-2775 or Executive Relations 800-275-2237?
• Should I take the power supply back in and show this to the Apple Genius and explain my situation?
• What about the logic board? Should I demand Apple replace that too, since it has the X caps?
I am out of warranty and no AppleCare. But according to other threads, like this one, this is a known issue and Apple should replace both my logic board and my power supply. But the genius I dealt with this morning seemed very knowledgeable and said he has been working on Macs for 20 years. He actually checked in my Macbook with a couple of issues and is resolving them no problem. But no joy on fixing the iMac.

I took my Macbook in yesterday for video flicker and misbehaving battery. Received new battery, logic board, and inverter cable in about 32 hours. Kudos to Apple for fixing my in-warranty machine so quickly and not blinking an eye. The Genius who checked in my MacBook asked if I read about these repairs on the web, as he said it is a major problem. Ironically, since then I have been cautioned twice by Apple about what I read on the web.
What does that have to do with my iMac saga? Absolutely nothing, other than since I went to pick up the MacBook, I took the iMac back in. Plus, I am trying to find some words of praise with Apple's prompt, no-hassle repair as with this iMac issue I can find no words of praise.
I started out with this new Genius tonight by explaining I brought in the iMac yesterday and the Genius didn't even open my iMac but just checked the serial number and EMC number and must have been confused on the programs. I told him he denied me either program and said the one issue was for Video AND Power issues, and since I did not have a video issue, I was denied. I was asked who helped me, and gave his name, and I could tell the genius in front of me regarded him highly.
Anyway, they brought out the MacBook, I signed for it, put it back in my laptop bag. Attention turned back to the iMac, and I could just sense a reluctance to help me. I had mentioned that there were X capacitors on the logic board, but that none of them were bulging, and I had read that could be a problem in the future and that people were getting logic boards replaced even though the problem was with their power supply and the logic board appeared fine. I received the party line again about misinformation on the internet and not believing everything I read. At least I convinced this guy to open up my iMac, which he would not do in front of me but took it into a back room.
He came back out and said my capacitors were fine and there was nothing he could do. (Well, I had already told him they were fine.) I said that this was for power issues and the problem is obviously with my power supply and he said he could not help me with that.
I was/am very ticked off and just didn't feel like getting into it. Normally I would have asked for the manager. The genius wouldn't even look me in the eye. I feel like I have leprosy or something. Has anyone else with a Rev. A iMac with serial numbers for this program get denied? I have not read such a thing on this forum. Someone please post a link to comfort me so I know I am not the only one.
I just left, in defeat. I've got enough Mac service centers around me that I am going to take it to one of them. In fact, I DID take it to one of them first on Monday morning, but didn't have the original receipt with me, so they said that could be an issue, so I just left and took it to the Apple Store since I was already out that way.
Maybe tomorrow I will find comfort back in the arms of one of those hybrid computer stores. The saga continues...

IMAC (Early 2006 20-inch) Power Supply, Logic Board

Has anyone had problems with the new 20inch iMac Intel Processor computer? Purchased the new iMac and in a month the compute was wouldn’t startup. Repair was diagnosed as Power Supply, Logic Board. Apple store switched out a new iMac computer after 2 weeks trying to get parts. The new iMac was plugged in a power strip protector. Now 2 weeks later the new computer is dead and Apple store is saying Power Supply and Logic Board is bad. I am not getting any power surges at the office and it is on a new power strip. Has anyone else had problems with the new iMac?

I got the same problem... I buyed it 2 days ago, plugged it yesterday and it worked. Today, I unplugged it to arrange all my connections(tv out, optical sound, printer, etc...) and it replugged it and pressed the power button and then... nothing... I was so frustrated... I switched to mac 2 month ago and I seem to keep having problems

Zombie iMac 21.5": refuses to power on for hours

This has happened twice to my 21.5" iMac (mid-range): After writing to disk for hours, I power down the iMac in the evening via Apple menu, disconnect the cables, carry it to another room, connect the power cable, but the iMac refuses to power on.
Measures: verified cable connections, electrical power outlet, reset SMC. Result: iMac refuses to power on.
Solution: disconnect all cables, wait till morning, connect power cable, press power button. Result: No issues, works fine.
Any idea why this happens? Have you experienced this?

Hi, just to share I experience the same thing.
One month ago this happen to me when I power off the socket power (the power to the plug of my iMac 27"). When I power on the socket power and press the power button behind the screen, no respond at all. Tried various method suggested at support site but no improvement. Finally I gave up go to bed and next morning it power up perfectly fine.
After this I use iMac for a month without power down the main socket it work perfectly fine whenever I power up or power down using the push button behind the screen. Just 15 mins before this post, I came back home, the iMac still cool as it not been turn on. I power off the main socket, remove the power plug, put back the power plug again, turn on the main socket power, press the power button behind the screen, no respond at all. Sign......do I need to wait till next morning then can power up again? Sign............
What shall I do?
Do I have to restrict myself do not power down the main socket power so that I can use the iMac as and when I like.
Shall I send for Servicing?

My iMac does not wake from power safe mode when addressed over the network from my Apple TV, until I send a "wake on LAN" command from a utility on my iPad. Is there anyway this can be done directly from Apple TV?

Need Help HP DM3 (DM3-1130us) Laptop will not power on. No power at all except for light on a/c jack

Hello, I need some help.
I have a HP DM3-1130us Laptop that will not power on at all.
the only thing that happens when I plug it in is the power jack lights up.
When the power button is used absolutely nothing happens.
No power, no fans, no leds, no on/off cycles, no beebs, absolutely nothing
just the light by the power jack that says the cord is plugged in.
The laptop has Windows 7, 320gb hdd, 4gb ram.
I have tried new power adapter and still nothing.
I have taken the battery out and tried and nothing.
I've tried the option where you take the battery out and hold the power and nothing.
I have tried with different hard drive and no hard drive and nothing.
I have tried reseating the ram and tried new ram modules still nothing.
So I am kind of stumped on what to do, the laptop will just not turn on.
Its not under warranty anymore so cant send it off.
It has not been exposed to any elements(extreme heat or water).
and its never been dropped or anthing.
Im kind of wondering maybe the power button board its self is bad?
If feels fine, its not loose or anything but could it
have just stopped working? for those who are not familiar with this model.
the power button is on the side and is a kind of drag and release button.
Its also on the same board with the Wifi button and 2 Usb ports.
But Im wondering before I buy a new one if this is what it could be.
Or could the motherboard its self be bad?
But even if the motherboard is bad would it still power up

Also does anyone know of any other way to try to power this laptop up
without using the slide button. I mean kind of like off a Dv6000 you can power the laptop on by using the Quicklaunch buttons on top but this laptop does not have those.

Hey Tyler,
Unfortunately it is difficult to troubleshoot this type of issue. The majority of the time when the computer wont power on with the same symptoms you described, the power supply board is faulty. Most of the time if the motherboard is bad it should at least turn on or so some signs of life. Like I said, this is most of the time. Sometimes it could do exactly what your experiencing. I would suspect the power supply board has failed since you are not receiving any sort of lights, sounds, etc.
You could check the motherboard for swollen capacitors or loose solder joints but sometimes you wont be able to find anything.
