27" iMac to 46" LED TV

Hello, I currently have a 27" iMac in my office. When I have people in for meetings I hate having to turn the display every time so they can see the screen. I would like to mount a 42" or 46" LED TV on the wall and mirror the display for them. Would this work? And would this look good on both the TV and iMac display? I assume I would need a mini display adaptor to HDMI?
Has anyone tried this?

I have done this in many different instances.
you just need to pick up a mini-display adaptor that has the appropriate outlet on the adaptor side (HDMI, DVI or VGA)
When you plug it in it should "just work" =)
When I have used my Mac for this, I plug in the cable and the mac screen goes blue for a few moments then it extends the desktop to the second display. You can adjust display placement in the system preferences.

how can i disable my iMac webcam green led ?

I believe the LED cannot be disassociated from the camera being on. This hard wiring is important to protect the user from being videoed without their knowledge.
If the small green dot hurts your eyes, you should see an optometrist who may be able to help your heightened sensitivity, with special glasses of some kind.

  • IMac and 24' LEd Display

    Hi,
I'm sure this is really obvious but I have ordered a new iMac + LED display; will I get the cables I need to connect or will that be an additional purchase? The only cables for the Mini DisplayPort seem to be adapters and I can't see the likely connectors mentioned 'in the box'.
    thanks.

This is a really nice setup from what I can tell. I wouldn't know for sure because my wife hasn't left the computer since we installed ours. She has had "network" problems at work and came home to work from home.
We put the LED display on a VESA arm to rais it an allow it to be rotated to portrait as well. Nice setup if you do photography or video stuff.
    Cheers.

  • IMac backlight OR LED Screen Panel Problem.

So for about 6 months now i've noticed these 'smudge marks' people have been talking about behind the glass screen in my iMac 27" which is a late 2011 model (about 13/14 months old) and was bought new fro the iMac store.
Then about 6 weeks ago i started having problems with what i thought was the backlight. After 5 minutes or so of being on my iMac, the screen would all dim a little and sometimes flicker for a fw seconds until it halted at a certain level of brightness (which i couldnt make brighter with the brightness volume buttons.) It became more frequent over the weeks and some times went completely black but i waited to take it into Apple because i live in Leeds UK and i knew there was a new Apple store being opened (Thursday 21st March 2013). Normally i would have to travel to the Meadowhall Centre (Sheffield).
So sure enough, i went in on the open day and they took in my iMac telling me it was the backlight. They quoted me £109 including VAT whih i was willing to pay. I had a phonecall today 25/3/13 from the store telling me they had replaced the backlight and the problem was still occouring so they would need to replace the LED Panel. I was also told this would cost me over £300 + VAT! No way can i afford to pay that and i'm probably not alone when i say it took me long enough to save for the iMac itself! Theres obviously a serious issue with the backlights and LED Panels of iMacs dating back since before the iMac models first came about. I don't smoke, one of the 'Geniuses' in the Apple store even commented on how well it had been looked after, there are no radiators near my studio, it is very well ventillated and isnt over used, so this obviously isnt a case of not looking after it propely. I don't understand why i have to pay over £300 if this is a MAJOR fault with apples product and not mine. Tomorrow i have to pick up my iMac (still broken) and simply work with the problem which i'm pretty sure soon, will be almost impossible if the screen continues to go black and fail on me.
    Recap:
    My questions are these.
What is causing the problems with the iMac backlight/LED Panel?
Why have Apple not done anything about this fault since it's been going on years now?
Why should i have to pay over £300 to fix APPLES FAULT.
And finally, has anyone here won an argument similar to this that were out of warranty and not had to pay?
    Thanks,
    Billy.

    Hi Billy, sad, isn't it!?
Some have paitiently worked their way through Applecare to get to a point where you can ask to speak to a customer service rep, & some have gotten satisfaction that way.
On the LCD, I wonder if it isn't that LCD cable problem...

  • IMac will not start up. Help please!

Earlier today I was surfing the Net with Safari. Suddenly, the page I was loading stopped loading. The arrow pointer would not move if I moved the mouse. The menubar clock's seconds stopped changing. The entire system was frozen. After about 15-20 seconds, the iMac's fans started blowing louder. After another 30 seconds, I gave up and tried the force quit key combo. No dice. So then I held down the power switch, forcing a shutdown.
Now, when I try to boot my iMac G5, I get one of 3 outcomes:
    (a) I hear a faint fan sound, and perhaps the hard drive makes a sound, but nothing else happens.
    (b) I hear the startup chime, but the chime doesn't finish. It's cut off and the iMac turns off. Sometimes the light on the front of the iMac comes on for a moment, sometimes not.
    (c) The iMac starts up normally. After a minute or so, the whole system freezes again.
I use this Mac at work for all my medical records. Now I have no access to my medical records (but I do have a backup, thankfully). Without a working medical record system, I've had to cancel all my patients for the day and I'm scrambling to find a solution.
I found an article in the Apple knowledgebase. I followed the article step by step. It's called iMac G5: Troubleshooting when your computer won't turn on, and can be found at http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=300908 .
With the back cover removed, and the power cord plugged in, LED 1 lights.
When I hit the internal power button, LED 2 and LED 3 lit up, and OS X started up. The login window appeared. Since my keyboard and mouse were not plugged in, a window came up saying that the iMac was looking for a bluetooth mouse. I don't have one, so I plugged in my USB keyboard and mouse, but the mouse never saw power (the red laser never came on). From that point forward, I couldn't get the mouse to work and after maybe half a minute, the fans started blowing again. So I think this was the same as my Mac starting normally, but then freezing. This time, it froze before I could login.
One thing I noticed: the iMac had been off and unplugged for more than 45 minutes. The last time it had been off and unplugged for more than 45 minutes, when I plugged it in an tried to boot it, it actually started up and I got to the finder. But then after I started to run Disk Utility, the OS froze up again. So it seems, if I leave the iMac off and unplugged for some length of time (45 minutes works), it will boot into OS X.
Okay, so on with the steps described in the article. I held down the internal power button, and the iMac shut down. I hit the SMU button (with the iMac off). Then, I tried the internal power button again. This time, LED 1 lit, and LED 2 lit, but then LED 3 does NOT light up, and the computer does not start up. I just hear a light fan blowing (near the processors, I think) and the hard disk makes a few clicks, nothing more. No chime, no display.
So then I reset the SMU again, by pressing the SMU button (which turned off the computer). Then I pressed the internal power button again. The computer still doesn't start up normally. Same as above.
Reading through the article it asks, after pushing the internal power button, does LED 2 come on momentarily, or not at all? Actually, neither. It comes on, and stays on. The article has no instructions for you if LED 2 comes on and stays on. At this point, I'm stuck.
So I checked another knowledgebase article, About the iMac G5 diagnostic LEDs. http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=86815
    It says:
    - LED 1 indicates that trickle voltage from the power supply has been detected. This LED will be ON when the computer is turned off and your power supply is working correctly.
    - LED 2 indicates that the main logic board has detected proper power from the power supply when the computer is turned on. This LED will be ON when the computer is turned on and the power supply is working correctly.
    - LED 3 indicates that the computer and the LCD display are communicating. This LED will be ON when the computer is turned on and video signal is being generated.
    - LED 4 lights only if the computer detects an over-temperature condition. This LED will be OFF when the computer is turned on and running at the correct temperature.
On my iMac, LED 1 and 2 light and stay on, while LED 3 does not (except for the first time I tried this, see above). This seems to indicate a problem generating a video signal.
So maybe it's a problem with the video signal, but I think something else is going on too.
iMac G5 (First Generation)   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

right down to the "Troubleshooting when your computer won't turn on" 2nd LED staying on when the procedure only gave two options: Momentarily on or not coming on at all.
    Hi guys,
The fact that the second LED stays on is actually normal. This what is meant to happen if neither the power supply or one type of motherboard problem have occured. Para 12 of http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=300908 only provides the results (no light or momentary) that occur if the test provides evidence of a problem with either of them.
As Anthony notes, if LED remains lit constantly then power is reaching the motherboard and the computer is turned on as described in http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=300908 .
Just wanted to make this clear in case other users got worried if they found LED 2 lit.
I agree that http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=300908 could be made clearer in this respect.
    Cheers

  • I have an imac (intel) running 10.8.5.

after upgrading to 10.8.5, a few months ago, I've noticed that after the imac goes into sleepmode (screen saver), the network connection is slow to reconnect or restablish to the internet. most times I have to close safari or firefox and restart the browser. sometimes it responds properly with my home page and sometimes I get the grayed out no connectivity message and asks to run network diags. eventuall the home page appears after several minutes. I also notied that on my verizon dsl modem the imac connectivity link led is not lit. after I awaken the imac by hitting the space bar, the led reappears on the dsl modem. but connectivity is still slow to restablish the connection.
I never had this problem until the upgrade to 10.8.5. I also have a windows based pc on the same dsl model (both are hardwired) and it does not have this issue. any ideas as to what may be happening? it seems like the dhcp address may be dropping and not restablishing properly. I have had this dsl service for more than 10 years and it's been solid.  Thanks to anyone with any comments or suggestions.

Test after taking each of the following steps. Back up all data before making any changes.
    1. Make sure the network is on the preferred list by following these instructions. It's important to read the article carefully, as it's the starting point for any further efforts to solve the problem. If you skip any of the steps, the problem may not be solved.
    2. Follow the instructions in this support article under the heading "Symptom: The network connection drops unexpectedly."
    3. Make a note of all your settings for Wi-Fi in the Network preference pane, then delete the connection from the connection list and recreate it with the same settings. You do this by clicking the plus-sign icon below the connection list, and selecting Wi-Fi as the interface in the sheet that opens. Select Join other network from the Network Name menu, then select your network. Enter the password when prompted and save it in the keychain.
    4. From the Location menu at the top of the Network preference pane, select Edit Locations. A sheet will drop down. Click the plus-sign button to create a new location. Give it any name you want. In the new location, set up the Wi-Fi service with the same settings you used before. Click Apply and test.
    5. Launch the Keychain Access application. Search for and delete all AirPort network password items that refer to the network. Make a note of the password first.
    6. In some cases, the problem has been resolved by repairing permissions on the startup volume.
    7. Reinstall OS X.

  • FireWire HD(10.4.7) starts G5 2.5DP tower but won't boot iMac G5.Any ideas?

I use my bootable FW HD (Oxford 911 chips) with 10.4.7 installed to troubleshoot other Macs. It readily boots the G5 tower; however, when trying to boot an iMac G5 1.8Ghz, after trying for a few minutes I get a gray circle with a line through it.
Anybody have an idea what's going on?
    G5/2.5GHz DP/1.5GB; iMac G5 17" 1.8Ghz   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

Hi, normgan. Welcome to the Discussions.
    1. I presume you have selected the FireWire drive using the Startup Manager, yes? If so, have you tried starting up in Safe Mode from the FireWire drive? To do this from the Startup Manager, select the FireWire drive, then press and hold the Shift key, then click the right-pointing arrow while continuing to hold the Shift key until you see the spinning gear below the Apple logo.
If Safe Mode works, there may be some incompatible Startup Item specified for the Mac OS X installation on the FireWire drive. My "Troubleshooting Startup and Login Items" FAQ can help you pin that down if such an item is causing the problem.
    2. Have you checked the bootable volume on the FireWire drive for potential problems? For example, Disk Utility > Repair Disk?
    3. Are you using the same FireWire cable in the case where it works as when it does not work? If not, try a known, good FireWire cable.
    4. Is there something amiss with the iMac G5 that is leading you to use this FireWire drive? If so, perhaps some iMac G5 troubleshooting is in order:1. See if your iMac G5's serial number is in the range specified in the "iMac G5 Repair Extension Program for Video and Power Issues" document.
    2. Rule out potential hardware problems. Run the Apple Hardware Test that came with the computer. Instructions for doing so will be found in the hardcopy manual that accompanied your computer. For additional details, see my "Apple Hardware Test" FAQ.
    3. Check the diagnostic LEDs, a feature of your iMac G5. See "About the iMac G5 diagnostic LEDs."
    4. If your iMac G5 will not turn on, see "iMac G5: Troubleshooting when your computer won't turn on."
    5. See also the iMac Service & Support site.
    6. Check the iMac G5 Discussions for similar reports from other users.
    7. As a general check, run the procedure specified in my "Resolving Disk, Permission, and Cache Corruption" FAQ. Perform the steps therein in the order specified.
    8. If the computer is either under warranty or covered by an AppleCare Protection Plan, don't hesitate to take advantage of your warranty and contact AppleCare.Good luck!

  • IMac G5 shuts off by himself

    hello everybody,
I have an iMAC G5 20' and I just update the system with Tiger X.4.7 a week ago and since then my iMac is shutting off abruptely by himself without any warnings. It happens two times last week and tonight it happens twice.
The overall temperature of the Mac seems correct
Anyone has any idea ? I already saw that some MAc Book users seems to have the same problem !
Any comments ? Thanks for your help
    Jipes

    Hi, Jipes.
Could be a power supply problem or an issue with mains power: assure the power cord is connected properly to the computer and mains power, and that the power cord is undamaged. Try a different power socket. If you use a UPS, be sure the battery is good.

  • Recommended iMac display calibration settings

Trying to calibrate my 2011 27" iMac with a Datacolor Spyder4 Pro.
Their calibration tool recommends a brightness of 180, but I have seen other articles from other sources recommending something closer to 120.
At 180, the display seem extremely bright - and when some of my photos are viewed on other / non-calibrated monitors, they are darker that what I would expect.
Also, I know that the iMac has an LED display, but that does not seem to be an option during the setup - is LCD the best choice?
Any recommendtions on settng for proper calibration of this display would be appreciated...
    Thanks

It is an LCD display, the back light is LED. Use LCD

  • G5 IMac and a black start up screen

    Computer running perfectly all day.
Switched it in this evening to get the white apple screen immediately turning to a black Unix (?) screen and high speed fans and if I type sh /etc/rc at the command prompt it goes thru a complete disc check routine. It checks out all the USB and Firewire connections and the network and reverts to localhost:/ root#.
Can anyone suggest how to find the GUI?
I cannot get it to see the OS DVD on holding down the c key nor will it boot in safe mode by holding down the shift key.
Have not installed any software today. Did the upgrade to 10.4.6 several weeks ago with no problems.

  • IMac G3 - no startup chime but power on

Hi there, I have a very strange problem with an iMac G3 slot loading. It seems to be the same problems as other users have with their iMacs. The trouble began by switching off the iMac - the power-led keeps on (green). Then my daughter in law pulls the power cable. By restarting the iMac only the power led is on, but the mac is absolutely "dead". No startup chime no spinning of the hard-disk...
I do the following: Change the battery, reset the PMU, check the power-cord, unplug and plug the RAM, check the hard-disk. But I can´t find what the problem is. Next step I swapped the logical board with another iMac - but I can´t believe: it is the same problem. The board is o.K and therefore the Power Management Unit too, because it is on the board, or not? Is there someone with any idea? Thank you for your help,
    Matthias from Germany
    iMac G4   Mac OS X (10.4.5)

Well if its not the logic board then it coul be the mother board but I dought it. It sounds like a RAM problem. When you turn on your iMac does it make a long beep or possibly a few long beeps? Does the powerlight flash orange and green? Try some different RAM.
    Hope this helps

  • Things to try before a HD erase

    Hi everyone--
I'm having a myriad of problems with my iMac G5 (latest pre-iSight) which has never really happened with any Mac I've owned.
    Problems:
---Freezes (yeah, it's like OS9 or Windows-- its frustrating)
This happened three times as I tried to post this message from there (I'm on my iBook now-- thankfully I'm a geek with two computers)
---The computer itself whistles (can't describe it any better) from time to time, not often
---Speakers pop and loose sound until sound is adjusted
---Won't sleep naturally (i.e. without me explicitly putting it to sleep), frequent but not continuous
---Very, very slow from time to time
---Clicks (possibly the HD) like a really loud clock about five times a day, three days a week
So... what I need to know is what I can do to try and remedy these problems before I resort to a clean wipe of the HD.
    Here's what I've done:
    Repair HD with AppleCare CD
    Fix permissions
    Reset PRAM/NVRAM
    Reset PMU
    Unplug everything but the keyboard/mouse
Nothing seems to be helping at all. Is there anything else I should try before erasing the HD or sitting on AppleCare?

    Hi, i.T.i.
I suggest following these general iMac G5 troubleshooting steps, a couple of which you have already tried:
    1. See if your computer's serial number is in the range specified in the "iMac G5 Repair Extension Program for Video and Power Issues" document.
