27" IMac VESA Question

I'm Looking at the new 27" IMac's and trying to decide if I should get one with the VESA mount or one without. Has anyone got the one with the VESA mount, and if so what arm are you using? I'm also switching from Windows, what version of MS office works best 2011 or 2013?

Great and congruluations and welcome to the Light Side. Because y ou are new to OS X I'd recommend bookmarking and reading up on OS X and also how to migrate your data using Migration Assistant from your PC to the new iMac. You can do that by navigating to support.apple.com and choose Mac.
I'd also STRONGLY recommend two things, go out and buy yourself a good quality external HD to use for a Time Machine backup. I'd recommend OWC (www.macsales.com) Mercury Elite Pro series. If you decide to get another brand DO NOT buy WD external HDs. Their drives are fine but the enclosures tend to have a lot of issues with Macs.
The second thing I'd recommend is buying AppleCare, this wil extend the warranty from1 year to 3 and also provide telephone support for 3 years.You can buy it directly from Apple however I'd recommend getting it from a reseller such as B&H Camera or even Amazon. You can normally save about $50.
Finally if you decide to add more RAM at some point OWC and Crucial are extremely reliable vendors.

IMacs intel question

Hi everybody,
I am new to Macintosh and I am just about to buy an INTEL iMac, but how can I differentiate between the "old" iMac with the Core Duo processor and the very "new" one with the Core2 Duo processor ?
I am asking this Q. because my sister is buying it for me and bringing it to Mexico and she is completely computer iliterate.
So maybe a text or a logo printed outside on the box containing the computer or does she have to unpack it and look for this info printed on the computer itself?
Sorry for the dumb question, but I would like to make sure that she is not buying the "old" model.

It will say on the box that it has an Intel Core 2 Duo. Maybe you could just explain to her the difference, and make sure she gets the one with Core 2 Duo written on it? Another thing that might be helpful to know is that the 17" model didn't come in 2.0 GHz before, it was 1.83 GHz. So if she gets a 17" iMac that says 2.0 GHz on the specifications, it's definitely a new one.

27" iMac Firewire Question

Hi Folks,
I recently got the 27inch i7 iMac. I use it for Music Production and just general internet surfing.
My question is - I current use a Firewire audio interface (M-Audio Profire 2626) and with only 1 Firewire connection on the iMac.
Is it possible to plug a Firewire external hard drive into the back of my audio device, In a daisy chain type connection
(eg - iMac TO Audio Interface TO External HD)
to store my audio files and have no latency issues?
Any help on this would be greatly appreciated

Yes you can daisy chain them, the connection on your iMac is FW 800 so if your Profire only has FW 400 then you will need a cable like this. My suggestion would be to get an external HD that has 2 FW 800 ports (OWC Mercury, Lacie Quadra D2 or G-Tech) and you are set.

Help! I have an imac m6498 question(s) need help on the following ASAP thanx

i found an imac m6498 at my grandmas's, its working smooth and great. However, i have these problems:
idont have admin (she doesnt remember the password nor how to remove it)
i dont have the cd repair and backup etc, nor does she
cd drive works well (i need info on how i could reset this so i could use the pc like it was new)
i was thinking of transferring mac os 9 [or leopeord, cuz i saw a forum that its possible] into a usb ext hard drive and installing it there
the main problem is, i dont have admin. It says "you do not have access privileges"
other questions:
is there a way / combo buttons/commands that i could do to reset, change, redeem the password.

That machine is over 10 years old and is not an Intel based iMac, Apple began using Intel microprocessors in 2006 a full 5 years after your machine was made. It is a PPC (Power PC) based machine which cannot run Leopard. In other words you are in the wrong forum. You can reset the password per Resetting an account password however you need the original Install discs. If you don't have those your last option is to contact Apple and see if you can get a duplicate of the originals, you need these because they are machine specific. I suspect that due to the age of the machine you won't be able to get them.

Seeking a lightweight reclining stand(iMac vesa mount models)

Hi, I purchased a 21.5 iMac with the Vesa mount adapter assuming it would not be that hard to find a suitable reclining/retractable stand instead of a wall mount that can easily allow the user to obviously adjust these iMacs into a 90' 60' 30' viewing stance easily transporting the device throughout their home or office. I do have an HP all-in-one which does have a reclining stand/wall mount already installed but adds so much weight to the computer because it is also a wall mount are there any suggestions out there or is Apple possibly working on offering such an accessory since releasing these vest mount options over a year ago

i am trying to install leopard on my imac g5. I tried using a USB hard drive to use it with but people in this forum said that i couldnt...
my iMac's cd drive does not let me use my Leopard install disk.. it ejects it everytime..
Question.. How can i install Leopard on this iMac??
Can i some how use the USB HD to install it onto my main HD??

You may find a better answer on the "G5" forum...but, I had no problem installing Leopard on my son-in-law's 2005 G5, 20" iMac. I don't understand why it won't load from the built in disk drive since this is the way I installed it.
Are you sure that the disk you're using in the basic Leopard OS? It should work.
Hopefully you'll solve your problem in the "G5" forum.

Can you remove the stand from the new iMacs and mount them on a wall with a VESA mounting bracket?

As long as Apple has not changed the new 20" aluminum iMac's, the VESA mount for the G5 iMac is usable for the 20" Intel-based iMacs, because the stand is the same. The issue is that it isn't very user installable because it requires complete disassembly of the iMac to get to the inside of the casing to install the mount. This is a warranty killer. However, a guy who works in a computer lab has completed the process on about 15 to 20 iMacs back in 2006 when the Core Duos were first introduced.

IMAC Newbie Question: Prior PC Guy..help

Just bought a used IMAC 20 (MB388LL/A model number) with 4gb. It has the preloaded software iLife09 and Microsoft Office 08. He states he did not have the disks for that stuff...hence preloaded. What would I do if for some reason I needed to clean the harddrive and reinstall? Is there a way to do this?
Also, it has the snow leopard on it as well...but no disk. Should there be a disk or is this preloaded? Same question, what if i need to reformat etc....how would I get the operating system back on it without having to pay for a hard copy?
Btw, I got the Imac for 500.00, and its in pristine condition. Its the 2.4 dual core, 1066 front bus, 6mb Lcache, and its been upgraded to 4gb ram.
This is the 20 inch mac.....did I do good with the 500.00 price?

If you order/buy a mac with MS Office preinstalled, they should supply a disc (if you go into the store tab and click on configure for a new iMac and look for Office 2008 and click Learn More it says they will provide you with a disc)If iLife 09 is installed, there must have been an install disc I would think since that wasn't out in 2008 (model year for the iMac). Snow Leopard would also require an install disc as well.
Unless these were all obtained by the previous owner via torrent files (illegally) and therefore there is no disc to provide.
If you need to do a format, you can back up data in the Applications folder which would contain the Office and iLife apps. Unlike Windows, you can simply copy the app folders and they will still work when you try and open them up again. I would recomend setting up time machine with an external drive. Then you could format the drive, do a fresh install (snow leopard disc needed for same OS) and then use migration assistant to bring back your user profile and apps and all that. Chances are that if you have restore discs that came with the machine they would be for Leopard. I don't know if you can restore a Snow Leopard backup from time machine onto a Leopard install.
The price doesn't seem too terrible it's under 50% of what it would have cost new back when it was purchased.

Cannot install 10.5 on G5 iMac - flashing question mark

I have an iMac G5 that I am trying to install OSX 10.5 on. I get a flashing question mark and mac face folder after booting to that disk.
I was able to boot with my 10.4 disk, go into disk utilities, and erase the hard drive as per the instructions here:

You need to find a retail Leopard install DVD (black with a big X on it) if you want Leopard on your G5.

Refurb imac and questions

I am going to get a referb imac for $850. Here are the specs
- 17-inch widescreen LCD
- 1.8GHz PowerPC G5
- 600MHz frontside bus
- 512K L2 cache
- 512MB DDR400 SDRAM
- 160GB Serial ATA hard drive
- Slot-load Combo Drive
- ATI Radeon 9600
- 128MB DDR video memory
- 56K internal modem
now, my fist question is the 512 memory in it, is it one 512 stick or 2 - 256 sticks?
I'm not an intense gamer but i play games sometimes and will the 128mb video ram be good enough? My old computer had 5mb of video ram so it should be a incredible change.

I have bought two refurb iMacs and have been very pleased.
I do have an Apple reseller near me so getting things fixed under warranty was no problem. Strongly suggest Apple Care to prolong your comfort zone. A fraction of the cost of replacing something major.
You should also get nice new software with the Apple Factory refurb.
EDIT: Other than Apple Care I have not had to spend a penny to keep these iMacs in top form. It is used, and as I understand it, factory refurb does not replace components that appear to have useful life left even if they have some mileage. But it has been no hassle getting things replaced either under initial warranty or now Apple Care extended coverage.

Installing Win7 On iMac 27" - Question About Future Up

Seeing that Apple are dragging their feet on Official support for Windows 7 I've decided to follow the un-supported route of installing it on my iMac. The question I have, if I install Win7 now using the work around methods what happens when Apple do update Boot Camp to officially support Windows 7. Is it a case of just running the updated Boot Camp program to install the necessary / officially supported drivers or do I have to do a full clean re-install of the Windows 7 OS.
Sorry if my questions seems naive but Windows on a Mac via Boot Camp is a whole new ball game for me.

I'm even afraid these experiments could make it necessary at some point
to do a fresh install of Snow Leopard etc. too.
I'm thinking of using Parallels 5 until Boot Camp will be released, but this
is only a solution for "slow" applications. Furthermore I'm also not sure
if a deinstallation of Parallels and Windows 7 will remove/undo ALL and
not leave traces which could make problems later for a Boot Camp installation.
And maybe this all is just for a few weeks? Or maybe not? So what then?

Used iMac G3 questions...

Hello, I am new to the Mac world and have bought this week 3 used Macs, one Powerbook G3, a Powerbook G4, and yesterday a used iMac G3 400MHz/160MB Ram. My question is concerning the iMac. It has a brand new copy of Panther that when I turned it on walked me through the steps to set it up, bu the machine came with NO disks at all, and it only has a 9GB hard drive. What I want to do is install and format a 180GB drive I have from an old PC, and I would like to know how and if I can just "clone" the current hard drive and put it one the new bigger one. Any suggestions and help would be greatly appreciated. As I said I am new to Macs and have used and fixed and built PC's for years, but as so happy to finally be a mac user, albeit I'm not using newer macs, but it's a start, right?...thanks in advance for any and all comments!!

In that case, you definitely want to put a clone on an external backup. These iMacs won't see any more than 128 GB, so some of that 180 will be wasted. There is software available to make it possible to utilize the entire drive, but I'm not sure it would be worth it. You'll lose so much to formatting, so in the end you're really not wasting all that much. When you format the drive, be sure to close it off around 127.5 and leave the rest as free space. That way you won't encounter any problems with the OS attempting to write to the drive across that boundary. Here's an excellent guide to formatting and partitioning.

The jumpers should probably be set to Master/Single. This has to be an older ATA/IDE drive. (i.e. not SATA)

Good place to find Mac compatible external drives (and RAM); you want a Firewire drive, USB will be much too slow and I don't think you can boot this iMac from USB (your RAM is OK, but you'll need more if you want to run Tiger; Tiger is the highest OS you can run on this machine.)

Whatever external you get, it should have an Oxford Chipset.
Panther is quite old now and no longer supported by Apple--as is Tiger now. You'll also have a difficult time finding Browsers for it. But one good one still around is Camino, which may be a little slow (but you won't be able to run the latest Camino 2., only the 1.6)

If the iMac is legally owned and has a valid warranty at this time, it will have a valid warranty for a new owner, and in that case you should not be afraid to state "valid warranty" in your eBay auction description.
While Apple may not HAVE to honor a warranty without proper documentation, in practice, a demand for physical documentation would be unusual, since the owner information that matches the person requesting a repair is usually within Apple's database due to online or mail-in registration. Macs and Apple software that have never been registered will raise big questions. Questions are less likely to arise if the iMac is currently registered to you, and if the new owner, during setup, registers the Mac to their name, address, and Apple ID, and thereafter keeps their Apple personal info up to date.
Just as important as the original receipt which proves your legal ownership and right to sell, will be the purchase/payment information generated by the eBay transaction, as that will be the proof that the machine is legally owned by the new owner.

Just bought my first iMac, quick question about bootcamp

I'm finally upgrading my 6 year Dell with a new 27" iMac.
This is my first Apple desktop, but I will use bootcamp to have the ability to boot into windows (since I still use windows for work and still have a lot of windows programs I use)
My question is related to an external harddrive.
I'd like to have one external drive with all of my media type files (music, videos...etc) and share the drive between to the Mac and Windows bootcamp partitions.
Can anyone let me know what is best way to format the drive so it can read/write on both Mac and Windows?
Fat32 probably would work because I don't think I have any files larger than 4GB, but what about the ExFat format. Is this my best option.
I figure I'd ask the experts so I don't have to reformat the drive multiple times.

The best thing is to format the drive NTFS or OS X, then get third-party software to enable compatibility. For example you can use NTFS for Mac 10.0.2 or Tuxera NTFS 2012.3.6 to enable write capability to an NTFS formatted drive from OS X. From Windows you could use MediaFour's MacDrive software that enables Windows to read and write an OS X formatted drive.
NTFS maintains the highest level of compatibility when moving files back and forth.

Help. iMac flashing question mark, and now power loss at startup.

Hey. I've had some really weird issues with my iMac. It's a 2.8 core 2 extreme aluminium 2007 iMac. It was bought for me at the end of august 2007.
What happened was, I was watching a movie and it started freezing. Everything was so slow. So I turned it off by the mains since it wouldn't shut down. When I tried booting it back up it had the flashing question mark. So I read up on it and tried doing what the apple support website recommended, which was to put the install disc back in and use the disk utility to repair the disk. Except this wouldn't work and it said the hard disk could not be unmounted. So I read up again and apple recommended resetting the PRAM, which I did and then it wouldn't recognise the hard drive AT ALL. But after a few tries of booting up it found it again, I got on disk utility and still said the same thing when I tried to repair. So I repaired the permissions instead and restarted and the computer booted as normal. But then was still very slow and freezing. So I opened disk utility one more time and tried repairing permission, restarted the computer and now when it gets to the apple logo and the loading icon it looses power and goes blank. I've already tried resetting the SMU. it didn't work. Has anybody got ANY clue to what I can do? Is my waranty up? I don't have AppleCare. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

If you have an Intel iMac, it has an SMC not an SMU, so if you used the procedure that says "SMU" on it, you used the one for an iMac G5, which is not an Intel iMac.
Since you did many different things in a somewhat random order, you may want to do the following, even if you did some of it already.
Reset PRAM

which is basically disconnecting ALL cables and power, then reconnecting using a precise procedure. If you have been connecting the power cord to a crowded or old power strip (surge suppressor), try connecting it directly to the wall outlet, at least initially. First, power it up with nothing connected, except for power cord. If that works, add just your keyboard/mouse and use it that way for a while to evaluate how the iMac is working. If all is well, connect your other peripheral (USB/FireWire) devices one by one. If the problem does recur at some point, identify the device added last; it may be faulty or causing some kind of interference.
If the problem remain, even when trying to start up the iMac with nothing but power cord connected, connect just your keyboard/mouse. Insert your Mac OS X installation disc (for the currently installed system) and restart with the C key held down. Sounds like you did this already. You should note if the iMac is running normally when booted off the installation disc. If so, the problem may be your internal drive; it may be faulty. Run Disk Utility from Installer's menu bar, and try to do a +Repair Disk+ again. See if it works any better this time.
You can also try using the Apple Hardware Test, including on your original disc(s)
