27" iMac w/ Radeon 4850 total graphics corruption

I have a Late 2009 iMac 27" Core i5 with Radeon HD 4850 GPU running 10.6.8.  I came home the other day to find it only showed a black screen after waking from sleep.  After a reboot, it displayed multi-colored vertical stripes immediately after power on, followed by a white screen, then a werid multi-color pattern near the end of the boot process.  Further reboots show the same.  After it boots fully, I can ssh into it.  I can also use remote screen sharing and VNC, although they only show the same weird patterns, so I still can't use the GUI.  I reset the SMC and PRAM, I tried booting in safe mode, and I tried booting the install and AHT discs that came with it, but none of that made any difference.

I suspect the GPU is fried. Can anyone confirm that?
I've never noticed a heat problem before.  What would cause this?
Is there a way I can re-flash the graphics firmware?
And finally (wishful thinking) is this a known problem that Apple will fix for free?
thanks

Likely mndelo 1 is correct, but to dd...
Have you blown the dust out lately?
Get Temperature Monitor to see if it's heat related...

One way to test is to Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, Test for problem in Safe Mode...
PS. Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive
Reboot, test again.
If it only does it in Regular Boot, then it could be some hardware problem like Video card, (Quartz is turned off in Safe Mode), or Airport, or some USB or Firewire device, or 3rd party add-on, Check System Preferences>Accounts>Login Items window to see if it or something relevant is listed.
Check the System Preferences>Other Row, for 3rd party Pref Panes.

  • Installing Windows 7 on 2009 iMac with Radeon 4850 graphics (Guide)

    Howdy
(This was originally posted in the iMac forum by me as a reply to a Windows 7 question, but I figured it may be useful here too. This may be adjustable to work on other 2009 series macs, but I make no promises. If anyone has any tips on how to get the things working that I mentioned as not, feel free to reply. I would love keyboard volume control specifically :p)
I was able to get Windows 7 64bit installed on my 2009 iMac. I was expecting it not to work, but in the end it did (with surprisingly little effort)
    I have the following iMac:
    Early 2009 iMac
    3.06 GHz
    4GB Ram
    Radeon 4850
How to get video to work:
    1) Download latest "desktop" video drivers from ATI's site (I used catalyst 9.7)
    32 bit: http://game.amd.com/us-en/drivers_catalyst.aspx?p=win7/windows-7-32bit
    64 bit: http://game.amd.com/us-en/drivers_catalyst.aspx?p=win7/windows-7-64bit
    2) Run MobilityModder from the following link: http://www.driverheaven.net/modtool.php
    3) Follow the directions on the page (When it sais Vista only, that means Win7 too)
How to get audio to work:
    1) Download exe installer from the following page: http://www.realtek.com.tw/downloads/downloadsCheck.aspx?Langid=1&PNid=24&PFid=24 &Level=4&Conn=3&DownTypeID=3&GetDown=false
    2) Run the installer
    Things that do work
Video (Built in version isn't the best, follow directions above)
Audio (Built in version doesn't work, follow directions above)
    Wireless Internet (Built in)
    Wired Internet (Built in)
Bluetooth (mouse and keyboard) (Built in)
Things that I haven't figured out
    1) How to get the 64bit apple software frontend to install (the taskbar icon)
    2) How to get volume keys to work (the apple keyboard driver actually is worse than default)
    3) Things like changing brightness (but I would assume this would go with getting the apple frontend software to work)
    Comments
    1) It is blazing fast
    2) While this works on 64bit, I don't think 32bit would be much different to setup
    3) Using the latest ATI drivers are important because they support the new Windows 7 driver model (WDDM 1.1). While older versions may work (like bootcamp 2.1), they won't be the most advanced or fastest performing.
    4) While I haven't been able to install the bootcamp software (Win7 warns that it is incompatible), from what I've read (all the posts about DPC latency), it is probably better off for performance
    5) Your mileage may vary, I haven't tested this on anything other than my 24" radeon 4850 iMac. I also haven't tested it on 32bit, so don't blame me if something doesn't work right. Basically, if you break something it isn't my fault
    6) Bluetooth pairing is somewhat quirky, it usually goes pretty quickly for the mouse. Sometimes it will take multiple tries (canceling out, and starting again, etc) especially for the keyboard. Once everything is paired though it works perfect without any extra drivers.
    7) Remember this isn't supported by Apple yet.

  • Imac with radeon x 1600 graphics card will not send signal to projector

I am using an Imac running Boot Camp. The Imac has a Radeon X 1600 graphics card. I have installed the latest driver in XP. The Device manager recognizes the correct card.
The problem: I cannot get our projector to pick up the signal from the Imac. I have systematically gone through all the display settings. Others who have similar problems seem to have graphics cards with additional software that allows them to select a clone display feature.
Any thoughts? The projector works fine with a macbook running bootcamp (xp).

Hi Cathy and welcome to Discussions,
sounds to me as if you are missing the Catalyst Control Center, which usually provides these kinds of setting.
You can download both Drivers and the Control Center from the ATI/AMD website here: http://ati.amd.com/support/drivers/mac/bootcamp-xp.html
The Control Center needs a Windows where the .NET Framework (2.0 at least) is already installed before installing the Control Center, otherwise it does not work.
You can download that from Microsoft http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=0856eacb-4362-4b0d-8edd -aab15c5e04f5&displaylang=en
    Hope it helps.

  • Intel Inf Driver + Radeon 9700 Pro = Graphic Corruption

    Greetings all,
    Here is the problem:
Upon a fresh install of Windows XP Pro w/ SP1, I immediately installed the Intel Inf Drivers for AGP support.
On reboot, the little motion bar underneath the Windows XP load screen is graphically corrupted.  The monitor would blank out once it tried to activaly go into Windows.  Safe Mode has the same corruption, but the screen would let me boot into 640 x 480 (not sure how many colors though).
I have had the 9700 pro RMA'd and the motherboard (865 PE Neo2 PLS) RMA'd.  I purchased an Emermax 450W Dual Fan PS.  I have tried the video card in another machine (Athlon 64) and it works fine.  ATI Video Drivers have no effect.  As it corrupted on the default drivers included with Windows XP Pro w/ SP1, that's not the issue.  I tried turning off Hyperthreading, Spread Spectrum, loading the failsafe bios defaults, the corruption was still there.
Currently, I have an old GF2 GTS into this machine and it loaded the inf drivers without a hitch.  In this installation, the USB mouse actually stops working and I get a warning that the power has surged to the USB port.
Here's the rest of the equipment:
    Intel P4 2.8E w/ HT.
    MSI MS-6720 i865 PE Neo2 PLS Motherboard
    512 MB PC400 RAM
    Soundblaster Live Value!
    Enermax 450W Dual Fan PS
    Plextor 12x10x32 CDWriter
    LG 52x CDROM
    Osprey 100 Video Capture Card
I'll be posting the same issue on the Intel Forums and ATI forums, along with Rage3D.  I have a feeling it's something to do with ATI's native interface with the AGP slot on the mobo, but I don't know for sure.
    Thoughts?

    In answer to the above,
the problem occurs with both the Omega Drivers, the default ATI drivers and the DNA drivers.
If I don't plug in the molex connecter, the video card will not power up at all and there is a warning to plug it in.

  • Aperture 3, Snow Leopard, iMac ATI Radeon X1600 and graphics issues

I have been searching the web to see if 10.6.4 has finally solved the graphics issues with the white iMac 2.16 intel with the ATI Radeon X1600 graphics processors and seen some mixed reviews. What is the consensus here, has 10.6.4 finally solved the graphics issues when editing photos in Aperture 3 (not to mention problems with iPhoto and iChat also). I had to downgrade to Leopard before so I don't want to upgrade to SL again and go back down the downgrade path. Thanks in advance for the feedback

I can say that 10.6.4 has worked out the kinks for my white 24" iMac with 7300GT card. From what others have posted here, it appears the x1600 issues have been resolved as well. I was running 10.6.2 prior to this update and advising everyone else of same. Of course, 10.6.2 and SL was not perfect, with some issues cropping up here and there. IMHO the 10.6.4 release is equivalent to the 10.5.3 release by comparison. In fact, I upgraded my Mac mini after my good experiences with 10.6.4 on my iMac. Not sure if this helps or not.

  • Does the 27in iMac with radeon 4850 support 2650x1440 external displays?

I have access to a Dell u2711. I connected it to my iMac 27in, using a dual link DVI cable using the mini DisplayPort adaptor to DVI. I cannot get it to configure higher than 1920 x 1080. I hoped to be able to use the Dell for additional editing space, but require it to be supported at the max resolution. Has anyone been able to successfully attach the new Dell to the 27 in iMac?
Thanks in advance for your help!

Be aware that single link DVI (and thus the mDP to DVI adapter) does not support 2560x1440. To use that rez, you will want to use a DisplayPort monitor (like the Dell U2711). With a displayport monitor, all you have to do is buy a cheap mDP to DP cable and you will be set.
If you really (and I mean really) want to use DVI, you must buy the $100 dollar Apple Dual Link DVI adapter. However, be aware that the mDP to DL-DVI converter has MAJOR issues.

  • One week old, no power to my imac 2.93GHz with Radeon 4850

I got my $2100 iMac a week ago (late April), spent days loading all my iTunes songs and photos onto it, tagging faces in iphoto, setting everything just how I wanted it... and this morning I come down to a non-functioning computer. I have the 2.93GHz with the optional ATI Radeon HD 4850 512mb graphics card. I was using it last night to play Age of Empires, and everything seemed fine. When I left it to go to bed I clicked the power button, and it went to sleep/ standby as usual. Today I clicked the power button, the space bar, the mouse, and no response. I checked my other equipment for signs of a power problem, but everything else appears to be normal. Tried different outlets, different power strips, no luck. It had been plugged into a nice Belkin power strip the whole time. Called tech support, who advised me to hold the power button down for 20 seconds, no luck. Their next advice was to get it swapped out at the apple store, which of course does not deal with the upgraded graphics cards. The guy at the store told me he recommends sending it back to apple for a replacement, but I'm not crazy about sending my documents, $55 game disc stuck inside, and itunes songs that have been authorized on this computer (number 4 of 5 allowed) to someone I dont know and have no communication with. Does anyone think this could possibly be fixed at the apple store? Any ideas on what could have caused it? I'm a little concerned about the graphics card being the issue, especially if this happens again sometime down the road when it's on me to pay for repairs. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated!

    HI Dave,
*"clicked the power button, and it went to sleep/ standby as usual. Today I clicked the power button, the space bar, the mouse, and no response."*
First, try resetting the SMC, instructions here. http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1543
If the game disk is still in the optical drive, *try booting while holding down the mouse*.
Next, try booting from your install disk.
Insert Installer disk and Restart, holding down the "C" key until grey Apple appears.
Go to Installer menu (Panther and earlier) or Utilities menu (Tiger and later) and launch Disk Utility.
Select your HDD (manufacturer ID) in the left panel.
Select First Aid in the Main panel.
(Check S.M.A.R.T Status of HDD at the bottom of right panel. It should say: Verified)
Click Repair Disk on the bottom right.
If DU reports disk does not need repairs quit DU and restart.
If DU reports errors Repair again and again until DU reports disk is repaired.
According to this article there might be a fix in the making. http://techblips.dailyradar.com/story/newimac_owners_see_radeon_hd_4850_related_lockup/
I did a quick search in this iMac forum for ATI Radeon HD 4850 and you are not alone.

  • Wondering if I should return my un-opened iMac with ATI Radeon 4850??

Just got my iMac with the ATI Radeon 4850 and wondering if I should return because of all the problems I have been reading about and just go to an Apple store and get the iMac with a GT 130.
I haven't opened it yet, will Apple charge me a restocking fee? And will Apple pay for return shipping if I mention the reason I am returning is all the issues I have been reading about concerning the 4850?
    Any opinions will be appreciated!!

I would not base my decision on what I read in the forum. People who have issues generally post topics and replies to report problems. All the people who are having no problems will not bother to post to say +everything is fine and I'm happy+.
You should contact Apple directly to find out their policy on returns, and whether it makes a difference if you opened the package or not.

  • Graphics Corrupted on G5 iMac

I was wondering if anyone can help me or have seen this problem before. The graphics on my iMac (for all users) have been corrupted. The mouse cursor has box full of little lines and all of the background has little lines of dots running through them.
Everything else seems to be working well, but I cannot figure out what is going on. I checked Disk Utility and there were no problems with the disk, but I figure that something in the OS has gotten corrupted or is there a problem with the graphics card.
Has anyone seen this or has any other ideas of what I can check before I either take it into an Apple Store or reinstall the OS.
I appreciate you looking at this and welcome any ideas.
    iMac G5 running latest OS.

Well, you can run the Apple Hardware Test (it's on your OS Install Disk, or on the restore disk). It will probably give you some cryptic Video RAM error.
The most likely cause of this failure is due to bulged electrolytic capacitors in the midplane board, like these, and these.

  • Tired of graphical corruption resulting in depth changing to 256 colours.

When will the bug in the Boot Camp WinXP ATI Radeon 2600 HD Pro (mid-2007 24" 2.8GHz iMac that causes graphical corruption resulting in colour depth switching to 256 colours be fixed? This happens after a random time running WinXP (from mere minutes to hours), and can only be fixed by restart.
Years have gone by and Boot Camp updates, reinstalling Windows, a new 24" iMac (same model sigh), and tearing my hair out in frustration as Applecare support and bug reports achieve nothing has left me rather disillusioned. FYI - Apple Boot Camp graphics driver is the only one that works with my model iMac.
Still, it's gone on for so long I'm nearly ready to buy a new iMac. Can anyone tell me if this problem exists in any of the new models? Hopefully not since they use different GPUs, but given Apple's inability to sort even this most basic and glaring of bugs, I thought it wise to ask first.

This appears to have resolved the issue on restarting the system. I guess I must have accidentally moved this slider while looking through the system settings.
It doesn't explain how rotating the display twice "fixes" (or reverts) the changes made. That's a matter for a dev team if they ever want to bother looking into it though.
    Many thanks for the help,
    Duncan.

I get same problem with guildwars in fullscreen when entering character select. I have to ctrl-alt-F1 to tty then back to get rid of the garbled graphics. Then my characters vanishes except for their armor/effects. Going into windowed mode stops the garbling of the graphics but the bodyless avatars remain. There is one error stands out in wine output but can't find anything specific to this error that helps.
