27" iMac with 15" second display (Ono hybrid)

I wasn't sure how to word this but here it goes.
I have a 27" iMac on my desk connected to a Gateway 15" (facing away from) on the corner of my desk.
I was wondering (without mirroring) is there a way a smaller window on my 27" iMac can be like my "preview" of what is showing on the 15" gateway.
I would Mirror it but my Screen Resolution on my 27" takes on the 15" resolution - very wierd and not cool.
If I use the side by side, it does what I want but because the smaller screen is facing away from me I can't tell if I am showing the correct information/image/spreadsheet
See my pic below.
Can this be done?
THANK YOU!!

⌘-F2 Toggles it on and off. So when this happens, I try to do it quick enough that most of the windows don't reset, but most often it resets everything. So not only is it a couple extra steps everytime I use the computer, but I also have to move all the windows back.
The iMac in target display mode still thinks its connected to the other mac, in that all the windows are still stuck on the other side until I reset it.

  • 24 inch iMac with a second monitor (1920x1080)

I just purchased an HP w2338h and have it hooked up to my 24 inch iMac as a second display. I am using a VGA cable with the apple adapter. The problem is, it won't support the native resolution (1920x1080). Every resolution below this works fine but I obviously don't want to use a lower resolution. I have the option to choose 1920x1080 but when I do, it leaves a two inch black gap on the left side of the screen and puts strange bands down the part that does show up. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

  • Can I use my old 2006 iMac as a second display for my new iMac?

Can I use my rusty old 2006 iMac as a second display for my new 2012 iMac?  How do I keep one computer from trying to take over the other one?  thank you.

Try ScreenRecycler, the 2006 does not support display input.

  • Is it possible to input itunes into DVI/HDCP input from imac with Apple mini display portS?

Is it possible to input itunes into DVI/HDCP input from imac with Apple mini display port? Or is there another way?

The problem with itunes is needing a computer running it. or continuous internet connection.
A Time Capsule is AC mains powered.. no battery. Although you can certainly buy an older Gen4 TC and modify it ...
    https://sites.google.com/site/lapastenague/time-capsule-power-supply-repair-kits
I have run my TC on a 12V SLA battery.. which would neatly meet that part of the functionality you want. But it is heavy and not really the rugged sort of device I think you want.
But I would look at other media players and other ways of storing movies than iTunes.. if you want to carry the whole lot around with you .. A bunch of SD cards even you could plug into the ipad??
    External storage for iPad?
A small cheap PC/Mac laptop with a 1TB hard disk  in it.. and 11" or 13" screen.. can often be a much better solution than lugging around multiple items so you can fit Apple devices into your life.

  • Why is Best for Display setting in new iMac with Retina 5K Display only 2560 x 1440?

I just saw the new iMac with 5K Retina Display. It's awesome! I do have one question, though: The default (Best for Display) resolution is 2560 x 1440. That is the same as my current LED Cinema Display. Adjusting the scale in the System Preferences/Display settings maxes out at 3200 x1800, not 5120 x 2880. I'm not sure why the highest scale option isn't the full resolution of the display. Can anyone explain this or direct me to an article that does?

That got my curiosity too. It's something about the retinas pixel density per inch being higher than other displays, such as a Cinema HD.
The "Best (Retina)" option says "Looks like 2560 x 1440" when you roll over it, but the real pixel density is actually doubled I think, so 5120 x 2880.
The "Looks like..." phrase seems to refer to the size of elements on the screen rather than actual pixels. Perhaps that's what some folks call virtual pixels.

  • Using iMac as a second display while still using iMac

I work between both a macbook air and iMac daily.  My emails are on the MacBook Air and everything else is on the iMac.  I have purchased the Thunderbolt Cord and am able to use the iMac as a second display for the MacBook.
I would like to know if you can split the screen on the iMac.  I want to work from just one machine and see my emails on the iMac (say 1/3 of the screen) while still being able to use the iMac on the remaining 2/3 of the screen.
    Is this possible at all??

You can't do what you want to do. The Target Display mode only allows you to use the iMac as an external screen or as a computer at a time, so you can't use the iMac and use it as an external screen at the same time

  • Does the iMac with Retina 5K Display have "user accessible" SO-DIMM slots or not?

The Apple Site "http://www.apple.com/imac-with-retina/specs/" for the iMac with Retina 5K Display states for memory that it has "four SO-DIMM slots, user accessible".  What does that really mean?  Contact with Apple support indicates that the newest iMac is sealed, therefore I MUST order it with all of the memory I need, or I would have to break the seal (tear it apart) to upgrade the memory later to get to the memory slots...there is no access door as there was in earlier iMacs.  Is the memory in slots or soldered in?  How can that be interpreted as "user accessible"?  This seems very misleading, or Apple support has it wrong.
Sorry if this seems like a rant, but it sort of is.  Does anyone know the facts on this?

The previous 27 inch iMacs had the same statement. It means that the user can access the memory slots and add or change ram. There is an access panel on the iMac. On 21 inch iMacs there is no door and the ram is not user accessible.

  • I have bought a Apple iMac with Retina 5K display! Can I use it with all my Adobe Creative Cloud

I have bought a Apple iMac with Retina 5K display yesterday! But today I read something negative about this Imac regarding to to Adobe Creative Cloud, - so I would ask if I can use this iMac with Retina 5K with all my Adobe Creative Cloud programs??
I have not unpack it yet, so I would be happy if you could tell me if I should keep it or exchange another Mac if this iMac with Retina 5K display does not work OK in Adobe Creative Cloud. I mostly use the programs Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, and Muse.
I look forward to hearing from you!

    WOW!!
    That was great to hear.
I have just read this tread: https://forums.adobe.com/thread/1626784?start=0&tstart=0
So therefore I was worry about Illustrator which I use most of all programs.

  • 5k imac with two 4k displays?

Can anyone confirm that you can use two 4k monitors with a 5k imac? I know it has two thunderbolt monitors but people have told me it can only support one 4k monitor due to the processing power of the CPU and Graphics Card. Essentially im trying to have a mac with 3 high resolution displays. I dont know if its possible yet because of hardware limitations. I was thinking about doing a 5k imac with two 4k displays or a mac pro with three 4k displays Or if neither are possible, I'd just go with a 5k imac and the 5k dell monitor if the iMac could only support one monitor. Thank you if anyone can answer this because I know its a niche question thats not really speci

I have this exact same question.
Just a side note: I own a 5k iMac with a 4k display connected and when I try to add my 4k tv it will not work as a third screen. Bear in mind that is via an hdmi-mdp and I have not tried connecting another monitor via dp.

  • Using second iMac as a second display screen

I have two iMacs (long story :-), one new with thunderbolt port, another much older with mini display port. I would like to use one of them as a second display screen. Is that possible? BTW I can't seem to find thunderbot-t- mini cable either. Please help.

    Target display Mode FAQ's http://support.apple.com/kb/ht3924
You can plug a Thunderbolt cable directly into your Mini DisplayPort. http://reviews.cnet.com/8301-13727_7-20043524-263.html

  • Anyone used another iMac as a second display?

I was thinking about getting another display for some more realistate while i'm editing and was trying to make it as asthetically pleasing as possible when this idea struck me. Why not find a broken or abandoned iMac out there and use it as a second display. Doesn't have to have anything in it except the display i just think it would look really nice having them side by side. Has anyone seen or done this? Any idea what the ouput from the monitor to the motherboard is? Anyone have an iMac to donate to my cause?

If you had a working iMac, you can use this clever app to make it into your second display over a network connection and VNC.
    http://www.screenrecycler.com/home.html
I was thinking the iMac G4, with its infinitely adjustable swing arm would make a great second display. You can probably get one of those (working) in the 17-inch size for less than $300.
I use Screen Recycler to give my iMac a third display (on an old PC laptop running Ubuntu Linux).

  • IMac with 24" Cinema Display

Yesterday I went to the Apple Store and asked about buying a new 27" iMac and connecting it to my 24" Cinema Display. I was told that I could do that with an adapter and was sold a Mini DisplayPort to DVI Adapter.
When I got home I realized that wasn't the correct adapter. I called the store and was told that it wasn't possible to connect the iMac to that particular monitor. (As an aside, I was really ****** because that was the whole reason for making this purchase!)
Then I realized that the video plug fit in the iMac video port. I plugged it in and it seems to be working just fine. I just don't have the power and USB plugs from the monitor cable plugged in.
So, am I okay doing this? Am I hurting anything? Was the genius at the Apple store wrong when I was told I couldn't connect the iMac and the Cinema display? The reason for my concern, several years ago I plugged an external display into an older iMac and it caused video problems requiring the replacement of the monitor.
I can't seem to easily find anything in the forums, so any response/reassurance would be much appreciated!!

OK, you confused me talking about the m-DP to DVI adapter. The Apple Store should refund your money for that bad recommendation. I think whomever sold it to you made the same mistake that I did. They thought that you had the model Cinema Display prior to the one that your have.
So you have the 24" Cinema Display that was available from 2008 until just this past summer. It has one cable that ends in three connectors; mag-safe, USB and m-DP. Well the mag-safe connector was to power a MacBook so that one is fine not plugged in. The USB connector is for connecting the USB ports on the back of the display to your Mac, so there should be no issues plugging that in because it will give you an extra self-power hub if you need more USB ports at some point. And of course the m-DP is allowing the Mac to drive the display.
I think that you should still be OK. Your iMac has a better GPU than the minimum requirement for your display.
