27'  iMac wont detect Display

Hey folks,
I'm using the 27'' iMac Intel i5 and i have the following issue
it wont detect my dell S2009Wb display, I bought the original adapter from apple from the mini display port to dvi.
any suggestions? or experiences please help!
thanks guys!

Whew, I think I'd call Apple & ask to speak to customer relations, if what you say is true about the store/genii it sounds flat out wrong.
Does it start & show anything if you hold Option or alt key at startup?
How about the SHIFT key?
Does it still boot from the Install Disc?

  • Macbook Pro with Retina wont detect monitor on mini display port to dual-link dvi adapter

So after reading Jeff Atwood's post, I decided to jump and give it a shot. So this week I got my monitor in from Korea, and I already had my Apple mini display port to dual-link dvi adapter, hooked everything up - and nothing. Monitor doesnt show a signal, and no display shows up in user preferences.
To verify the monitor actually works, i plugged it into my windows box - and boom, right away there it is in all its glory. So I called apple support, after spending about an hour going through the "are you sure its plugged in stuff", the tech finally admitted to being stumped and blamed the adapter. Not to be deterred, I then went to my local apple store and talked them into trying their adapter to rule out the adapter - regardless of the adapter, the mbp wont detect the monitor.
Just for fun, i tried my old single mini displayport to single dvi, the monitor is recognized, but that obviously cant drive the right resolution, so i just get a backlight. Same deal when i try the hdmi port with a hdmi to dual-link dvi adapter on the end of it. Also tried display port to the same hdmi with adapter on it (the joys of working in a dev shop - cables to test everywhere)
I have read / tried a ton of things:
re-installed / uninstalled air display, just to be sure it was gone. went through all my apps just to see if there is anything like this i could think would be effecting it
install gfxCardStatus to ensure i am on the nvidia (discrete) and not the internal card
Played with different settings on SwitchResX to try to force the res over hdmi - no love - os rejected each one
I bought the monoprice adapter wondering if it was just the apple adapter since the apple adapter has been panned, no love from it either
    Reset the PRAM countless times
I have two other adapters coming in to test with in a day or two - maybe one of those will be magic, but at this point i kinda think its software on the mac. My Spec:
I am running Mountain Lion with all the latest updates
New MBP with Retina (2.6g processor, 16gig ram, nvidia video card)
Here is the ebay link to the monitor
Now the other weird thing is pretty much universally these auctions say the monitors cant be run on a laptop - which makes no sense to me, because its just a connection, if the video card is strong enough (which my machine better be) it shouldnt matter the source. The listing mentions its a "by-pass" monitor, which is something I and google have never heard of.
So any sage words to make my day?

Magic was, I have to have the adpter plugged into the mac, let it recognize all with the monitor powered off.
then power on the monitor, and boom gloriousness
For future generations, setup that works:
    1) MacBook Pro with Retina
    2) Monitor From Korea (example auction)
    3) Accell Mini DisplayPort to Dual-Link DVI Active adapter (amazon)
    4) Boot mac, plug in adapter, let it recognize the monitor, power on monitor

  • Using old iMac as 2nd display

    Hi,
Back in November 2008 i bought an Intel iMac 20".  Last friday I bought a new iMac 27". I want to use the 20" one as a second screen. Not as an external display, but be able to see my screen on the 2 computer at the same time. How can I achieve that? I've read on google that people were able to do it, but they never say how (like someone would watch their TV on the iMac)... I've tried screenrecycler, but it doesnt work on 64bits and i've read that over the internet there's always a lag, which is annoying.
    Thanks a lot!

Set up the 20" iMac as an external display. Go to System Preferences > Displays > Detect Displays , then select Mirror Display.
If, however, you want your display to stretch across both as one very wide display, then do not check Mirror but instead drag the blue icons into desired position. Place the Menu bar on the desired display and the result will be one display very wide but with the new iMac as the principal space and the 20" as the extension. This is the arrangement that I currently use: 27" iMac + 20" Cinema Display.

  • Using iMac as a display for MacBook Pro?

I understand that the new iMacs can be used as external displays but can not find any information on how this works. Is it just a matter of connecting a MacBook Pro to the iMac and hitting a key? Also, what cables do I need to get this to work?
    Thanks

Hey, I just got my 27" iMac last week and can verify that this works, as of a few minutes ago. I used the cable that converts from DisplayPort (the end that plugs into the iMac) and the mini DisplayPort (the end that connects to the MacBook Pro.
Plugged in the cable and the iMac screen flashed gray for a second, indicating, I guess, that the iMac had detected the external device. Then I could toggle it over with the Cmd-F2 keyboard trick. When you toggle it on, the iMac screen looks like a giant second monitor for the MacBook Pro. When you toggle it off, the screen switches back to your regular iMac desktop. When I first connected the cable, the MacBook screen dimmed briefly with an overlayed thermometer bar I hadn't seen before indicated some sort of calibration, perhaps? That took a few seconds, then it worked like a charm.
HOWEVER, if you are expecting the iMac to function as a second display for another device (like a PC, for example), the same trick DOES NOT work. This isn't clear in the documentation on apple.com and even some of the people in the Apple Store who I spoke to when I was buying it had not much clue about this, other than that it would work with a MacBook Pro. There's another device required (evidently) to make this work. Have had to order it, but have not tried it yet:

  • IMac wont boot up

My IMac wont boot up! I installed the Mac OSX system disk and ran disk utility this is the results:
    invalid node structure
The volume Macintosh HD needs to be repaired.
Error: Filesystem verify or repair failed.
What do I do to get this up and running again, I would appreciate any help.
    Thanks,
    Joe

I called applecare and they were able to get my iMac up and running. Apparently there is an issue with updating software. I just had to do an update today and ended up with the same problem. So I re did what the applecare rep told me and I got it going again myself. I am hoping this will not continue. So anyway, I am going to provide the steps on how my I got iMac going.
    1. unplug the computer for approx 17 seconds.
    2. unplug everything from the computer except the mouse and keyboard.
    3. plug in the computer
    4. turn on the iMac and hold down the option key at the SAME TIME
    5. when the iMac comes on, it will make a loud beep noise, CONTINUE to hold the power and option key until a small the Mac HD icon displays.
    5. When the Mac HD icon shows on the screen, release the power button and option key. Then click on the arrow below the Mac HD icon.
    5. The iMac will boot and take you to the desktop. Then click applications
    6. choose the utility folder
    7 then choose disk utility
8 a screen will appear that states first aid. At the bottom, there will be an option to repair disk. Click on that then choose Mac HD.
9 When this is finished, you are good to go. These steps will repair what ever the software updates are doing to the hard drive.
    Hope this helps.

  • IMac will not display

My iMac will not display anything on the built in monitor. I have hooked up an external display to the thunderbolt port and it works fine on the external. I have tried to detect displays and it still cannot find it. I have tried a SMC Reset and PRAM Reset and also reseated the ram.
    The specs are:
    2.8Ghz core i5
    4 gb of ram

i have changed and bought new cables but no change. the computer seems to be the issue...

Are you using the Apple VGA adapter or one from another company? Often the third-party adapters do not work well/reliably and the Apple one must be used.

  • Baseline 2011 iMac and Thunderbolt display

    Hi,
I'm thinking of maybe in the future buying a thunderbolt/ cinema display. So, will the graphics card in my iMac (the Radeon HD 6750M 512MB) be able to handle the resolution, without any lag?
    Thank you in advance!

Something sounds not right with the iMac. Try this:
    Open System preferences, select Displays.
Once inside Displays, select "Detect displays." Hopefully the second screen will light up.
Another similar thing to try is to sleep the iMac, then connect the second display, then wake it up.
If none of these shows the second display, then the iMac might need service.

  • Imac not detecting projector through bnc cable

I can not get the imac to output the resolution needed for the projectors. I need a way to force the imac to output 1280 x 800 to the VGA display. We have numerous locations where this is an issue. We do not have the luxury of running straight VGA cables to the projectors, thus the imac can not recognize the projectors. Please advise, how to make the imac function fluidly without detecting the projector.

    Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
    You might try capturing the projector's EDID with this device and then using it to notify the iMac to what display device it is connected;

UPDATE - On closer look I see that this device appears to be DVI only. I have searched the developer's site but cannot find a similar device for VGA. Perhaps a phone call to the developer would alert you to a solution.

  • Imac wont boot - i get a white screen with apple logo, and it loads to about 10%, then screen goes black

imac wont boot - i get a white screen with apple logo, and it loads to about 10%, then screen goes black

    Hey there mtriest,
It sounds like you are unable to boot the iMac successfully as it keeps shutting down when you try to boot. I suggest the troubleshooting from the following article named:
Mac OS X: Gray screen appears during startup
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ts2570
Disconnect, test peripheral devices and network cables
Note: "Peripheral devices" refers to external devices other than what came with your Mac, such as hard drives, printers, or hubs that you connect via a USB or FireWire cable.
Shut down your Mac. If necessary, hold your Mac's power button for several seconds to force it to power down.
Disconnect all peripheral devices such as external hard drives or printers (leave only the display, a keyboard, and mouse connected).
    Disconnect any Ethernet cables.
    Start up your Mac.
If you can start up this way, one or more of your peripheral devices (or installed software related to the device) is probably causing the gray screen issue. Connect one device, then restart your Mac to test for the issue. Repeat the process until you locate the device at issue. Make sure the device is powered if it needs to be to operate correctly. Check with the manufacturer of the device for support or possible software driver or firmware updates that may be available for the device. Try a different cable with the device if possible (such as a different USB or FireWire cable).
Note: If you have multiple peripheral devices and the issue only occurs when they are all connected, but not when each device is the only peripheral connected, see the Additional Information section below.
If you are using a desktop Mac with a third-party keyboard and/or mouse device, and the issue still occurs, try starting up with an Apple keyboard and mouse connected instead. Try starting with no keyboard and mouse connected, then connect them after start up. Also, try a different USB port on your Mac.
If the gray screen issue persists with no devices connected, go to the next section (with the peripherals still disconnected).
Perform a Safe BootSimply performing a Safe Boot may resolve this issue.
Shut down your Mac. If necessary, hold your Mac's power button for several seconds to force it to power down.
Start your Mac, then immediately hold the Shift key. This performs a Safe Boot. Advanced tip: If you want to see the status of a Safe Boot as it progresses, you can hold Shift-Command-V during start up (instead of just Shift).
Note: A Safe Boot takes longer than a typical start up because it includes a disk check and other operations.
If your Mac starts up as expected, immediately try restarting.
If the Safe Boot does not work, or the restart after a successful Safe Boot does not work, go to the next section.
There is additional information in the article with further troubleshooting if needed.
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.
    Cheers,
    Sterling

  • MBP no longer detect display through KVM

    Hey there,
Ive been having a lot of trouble with my MBP and external monitor. I set it all up about a week ago with a Belkin Switch2 KVM and my Belinea 22@ monitor. As soon as i plugged it all in, it all sang in chorus with each other and everything was great. Then, a couple of days later, my MBP decided it didnt like the monitor anymore and just registered it as a VGA display with every resolution except the one i needed. So, i tried everything i could think of to get it working - PRAM reset, software update, firmware update, OSX disc, closed lid, open lid, unplug and boot, plug and boot, unplug, plug in, unplug, plug in etc. everything and still no luck - then i decided to move onto the KVM to see if that was the issue and now if i plug in the monitor directly it works fine - but through the KVM it doesnt. This has only just happened - is there anything i can do - cos right now, it totally defeats the object of having a KVM switch. I'm using the official apple Mini DisplayPort to VGA adapter if that makes any difference.
    Cheers
    J

Im experiencing the same, even on direct connection. the os x wont detect the external screen. Im using the DVI to DSUB converter and nothings happening.

  • Use 21.5 inch mid 2010 imac as a display for 2013 macbook air?

I would like to use my 21.5 inch mid 2010 imac as a display for my 2013 macbook air. I tried using Screen Recycle, however I would prefer more of a monitor situation than a side-by-side extra screen situation. Ideally with my wireless keyboard and mouse. Does anyone have any advice, or am I asking too much from apple? Thanks very much.

Yes. With an Ethernet cable and a product such as ScreenRecycler.

I recently got my iphone unlocked because i wanted to change my carrier. today when i connected my iphone to the itunes it started updating the software! all my previous data was erased and now it wont detect the sim card! what do i do?

Updating iTunes has nothing to do with an iDevice going into recovery mode.
If the device is in recovery mode, restore it via iTunes on a computer.
