27" LED display drawing too much USB power?

I'm having the infamous "USB device is drawing too much power" issue, but in my case it's a little different. Whenever I plugin the USB cord from my 27" LED display to the MacBook, it results in the above error (too much power, USB is disabled).
I've narrowed down the following:
1. Happens on two different MacBook Pros.
2. Happens when LED display is powered from different outlets.
3. It seems 2 of the 3 USB ports on the back of the display are not working.
This started happening after I moved about a month ago and reconnected everything, including a USB Hub I was using previously. I also have a SD card reader, all of which was plugged in and ready to go. When I powered up everything, the lights on the Card Reader and USB were actually pulsing, which didn't look right so I immediately powered everything down. Checked all connections and tried again. Same thing happened, so I unplugged the card reader and USB hub.
At this point, I had my keyboard plugged into the monitor which is how it was prior (before my move). I powered up everything again and while waiting for the keyboard to come on (the keys are illuminated), I noticed it was actually VERY hot - the underside of the keyboard. So I unplugged it and had a little bit of a sonofa***** moment. The keyboard seemed fried. It wouldn't come on for anything, so I went and bought a new one.
Soon as I get home, I plugged the new keyboard directly into the laptop and ignored the external LED display. Everything seemed to work fine, so I tried plugging the external monitor in, but soon as I connected the USB cord... this error pops up every single time.
Is this a USB cord issue (on the LED display) or what?  I'm at a loss of what could have happened, since when I moved everything was transported very carefully. The LED display was even in it's original retail box, so nothing was damaged in the move, USB cord included.
Any thoughts or suggestions would be appreciated. I know ultimately I may need to bring it in for repair (still within warranty as I purchased the display in May 2011)... but I'm trying this first incase anyone has any ideas that could help me avoid that hassle.

Smc reset sometimes addresses some power issues.
It is possible that when that first keyboard failed when plugged into the back of the display it somehow damaged the display usb ports.
If you are under warrantee, take it to apple and let them deal with it.

    Hi Everyone,
    Bought recently a new macbook pro 13 inch with Retina display with 120 GB flash drive.
    Connected a non-apple CD drive to my macbook and after that started receiving this message: "Because a USB device was drawing too much power from your computer, one or more of your USB devices have been disabled."
    initially I was receiving this message after I switch on my macbook but now after every 30 seconds this message pops up although I never connected anything to my macbook through its USB ports.
    Will highly appreciate for your help on how to get rid of this problem.

    Try resetting the SMC
    Shut down the computer.
    Plug in the MagSafe power adapter to a power source, connecting it to the Mac if its not already connected.
    On the built-in keyboard, press the (left side) Shift-Control-Option keys and the power button at the same time.
    Release all the keys and the power button at the same time.
    Press the power button to turn on the computer. 
    Note: The LED on the MagSafe power adapter may change states or temporarily turn off when you reset the SMC.

    In the last week or so, my iMac (Intel CoreDuo) started displaying an error message every 30 seconds saying "Because a USB device was drawing too much power from your computer, one or more of your USB devices have been disabled", followed by some other useless "explanations" (which BTW can't even be copy/pasted). This has happened before (for about a year now) at every startup, but that was more acceptable; now that the message comes every 30 seconds it renders this machine unusable.
    I tried it with or without any USB accessories attached, with or without powered hubs attached, I reset the PRAM and SMC and reinstalled the OS twice. The only option I have left is to trow this machine out and buy a new one (believe me, it's not going to be a Mac).
    This shows not only the lack of quality of the hardware (crappy logic board and USB ports) but also a complete disregard for the annoyance these constant popping messages create to the end user when designing the OS. Just while writing this message I had to press the OK button about 10 times. It's AWFUL!!!

    Hi cimula. before you turn to the extremes have you tried reinstalling snow leopard. maybe you had a problem occur when it was originally installed and is missing a driver or something. also take it to an apple store if possible. take everything needed to run the imac and show one of the geniuses the problem and 90% of the time if you are nice and calm they will gladly help and diagnose the problem even if it is out of warranty. no promises it will be free it could be a hardware malfuntion. just dont force your self back to pc once all of the problems are gone you will love it again. i switched from pc which i had been using my whole life after a friend showed me his macbook and have never looked back. of course once and a while there will an error, problem or whatever but is it worth switching to a pc which has to have a security program running 24/7 to stay alive and sucking up all of the cpu and slowing you down? hope i am helping Dean

    I have a Mac Pro 1,1 that until this last software update (10.6.7) was running fine. After the download and reboot, my computer is now riddled with the same error message: "Because a USB device was drawing too much power from your computer, one or more of your USB devices have been disabled."
    To give further understanding of my set up, I am running an ATI Radeon 5770 video card with three monitors attached: on the DVI port is a 32" Samsung flat panel TV, and attached to the two mini DVI ports were two 20" Apple Cinema Displays connected via dual link DVI connectors (each of which was connected to two of the three USB ports on the hub in the back of the Mac Pro tower).
    So, after the software updated and the computer rebooted, the Apple Cinema Displays did not come back on (obvisously because the USB hub in the back of the tower was shut down).
    I have tried repairing permissions. I have reset the PRAM and I have reset the SMC. None of these have thus far worked.
    After a visit to Apple, the Genius told me that it was because there was some discrepancy with the other third pary PCIe cards that have in slots one, two and three. So I confirmed with him that if I pull the cards and reboot, the error message should go away. I pulled all third party cards from the slots and I'm still experiencing the same problem.
    I realize that this sounds like a logic board replacement. But I'm hoping there's someone else out there in the community who may have had a similar problem and may be able to offer any other kinds of work around.
    Just for the record, I am running an RME HDSPe card in slot 1, UAD 1 in slot 2 and UAD 2 in slot three. Slots four and five are occupied by the ATI Radeon 5770.

    If you don't have any USB devices plugged in, then your Mac may just be confused. Try an SMC Reset:

    Hi,
    When I plug a USB extender cable to any USB port on any Mac tested so far, I get the warning:
    "USB Over Current Notice. The USB device is currently drawing too much power. The port it is attached to will be deactivated".
    In fact, that freezes the Mac mouse and keyboard until the USB extender cable is unplugged, and renders the used USB port unusable until the next restart.
    What is going on? Such extender cable worked fine until Virtual PC was open with Windows XP XP2 in safe mode on an iMac G5 (20-inch) with Mac OS X 10.4.3. A 1GB flash pen was inserted, and its files were seen via "My computer". Then the flash pen was taken out (without properly ejecting it via Windows) and someone inserted a 2.2 GB USB hard disk, which froze the Mac and caused the reported problem from that moment.
    So it seems that the USB cable is now somehow defective, but I wonder if it could be fixed, since it does not seem to have any internal circuit but just the USB connectors and cables. So I wonder what is going on...

    USB Overcurrent Protection issues arise when one or more of the USB devices draw too much power or, by adding a device to a USB hub, one exceeds the current budget for the entire chain. A detailed explanation can be found in this article, where it states:"Should the cumulative current drawn by a group of downstream ports exceed a preset value, the overcurrent protector removes power from all downstream ports. Overcurrent circuits are used to protect against catastrophic device failures, software errors that lead to devices turning on when the current budget has been exceeded, and user-caused events such as the shorting out of connector pins."See also "USB: Hub Description" for important information on self-powered vs. bus-powered UBS hubs.
    Your Apple Pro keyboard is a bus-powered USB hub. Some displays continaing USB ports may act as either bus-powered or self-powered hubs: one has to consult the display's documentation for details.
    • If USB Overcurrent problems arise using a bus-powered, third-party USB hub, try a self-powered hub or connect the USB device directly to one of the built-in USB ports on the computer itself.
    • If USB Overcurrent Protection issues arise when a device is connected directly to one of the built-in USB ports on the computer itself, then the peripheral device or its cable is either damaged or defective.
    Note that you can not put two bus-powered hubs in series. In addition to the article "USB: Hub Description", see also "Apple Pro Keyboard: Devices Connected to Hub May Not Work."

  • MacBook pro 13" mid 2010 "USB drawing too much power" HELP

    Hi, my MacBook Pro keeps coming up with a window about 30 after start up saying "USB drawing too much power" and none if the USB ports work neither does the iSight camera (green light is constantly on) and the headphone jack won't work! I have tried re installing OSX but it hasn't worked! Apart from an SMC reset and a PRAM what else can I try? Absolutely nothing is plugged in not a single cable or keyboard or mouse just my MacBook on its own, is it definitely a software problem or am I going to have to get apple to repair the hardware because I do not have that much money to replace a logic board and get apple to replace it themselves.     When I plug in my son's iPad I get this message "Because a USB device was drawing too much power from your computer, one or more of your USB devices have been disabled." I only have one charger for this iPad all my other chargers are for iPhone 4s. I have pluggerd it in different outlets around the house and the iPad will not charge. When I plugged it on my lap top to back it up it gave me the warning message. HELP!!

    I have the same problem on my Air. The message first came up while my iPhone was connected to it for some time. Since then, it pops up ALL THE TIME, whithout anything being connected to the USB port, at what appear to be random intervals that vary between about one hour and a few seconds. I have tried resetting the SMC and  the PRAM, but no results. A quick search revealed that thousands of users are facing this problem, but Apple has yet to provide a solution. Please help!

    Here is the total error message:

    Now in contrast to every other thread on this i get this error message eveytime i connect my soundcard (interface). Not when i start up the mac or anything, just when i connect the sound card. (the soundcard does not have its own power source but note that this has never happened before and i have had this soundcard for about a year!)
    It deactivates so i cannot use it.
    I have tried:
    Connecting the soundcard to my mothers mac -> it worked!
    Connecting an external harddrive to my mac -> it worked!
    so basically, i can't be the soundcard or the cable and it cannot be the mac USB port?
    I don't know what to do! i really need this to work! anyone got an idea??

    The 'funny' thing: there is no USB device attached to the computer (only power and monitor cables).
    Why is this happening and what could I do about it?

    If you just bought the iMac and the Sjuperdrive take the superdrive back and get a refund. The by any other brand external DVD drive that connects by USB and try that. Most come with a Y USB cable to allow you to connect to 2 USB ports to supply enogh power to the drive IF Needed.
    Or take both back and get a refund on both, you have 14 days to return it no questions asked, and buy another iMac and some other brand external DVD drive.
