27" Monitor and Power

Got it yesterday and work fine, using with a i5 MBP.
Question: when I use it the MBP is very quiet, if not used ➠ screen saver for 5 min and the display dimmed black the computer is running hot and fan is loud. Going back and using it, about 2-3 min into it it gets quite again.
Why is that?

TimeMachine is running all the time.
This happens every time the MBP goes to "display sleep mode". I have set the display to sleep after 5 min, when I leave the Mac I set screen saver and 5 min later the display sleeps.
When I come back the fan is running hot and waking display up the fan stops after 2 min. Using the Mac then intensively never causes the fan to come on.
I'm baffled that it takes more processor power having the display in sleep???!!!

It's almost impossible. The new iMacs have a Target Display Mode, but it's built to do that. Without ripping your screen out, finding an acceptable power supply, frame, and whatever electronics to convert a Thunderbolt signal to the screen, the cost will be much larger than buying a cheaper HiDef monitor that runs with an HDMI to Thunderbolt cable to your MacBook 15. In fact, you can sell your 17" MBP for a lot of money, unless it's broken or something, buying you a really sweet monitor.

U2312HM and second monitor = Entering Power Save Mode

So, my monitor has not been able to turn on for about a week now. It shows that it's getting power, but after 3 seconds I get the message that it is going into power save mode. I am able to press some buttons on the monitor and a message pops up that there is no signal and to try typing or moving the mouse which doesn't work. I've attempted to change the input source which only leads to "No DisplayPort Cable - The display will go into Power Save Mode in 5 minutes.". I have tried a separate monitor which is extremely less powerful and I get the same message that it's entering power save mode. Could this be a fried video card or what's happening here?

Thanks for the reply Chris. I do have both DVI and VGA out ports and I will be testing that today. Not sure if this has anything to do with my issue or not but I might as well mention it. I have 4 2 GB ram sticks which came with my pc. I purchased two new 2 gb ram sticks due to some memory issues I was having. The problem is, the two new ram sticks I had were not the correct size but I attempted to use them anyway. Now prior to inserting these new ram sticks I cleaned my pc using air duster and a light suction vacuum cleaner, not sure if I got all of the dust. Once I found that the ram sticks were not the right size I then reinserted my older ram sticks and this is when the monitor issue occurred. A couple people had mentioned that this sounds like a bad video card, but could inserting wrong ram sticks affect the motherboard and in turn mess with the videocard?
Also, roughly 3 weeks prior to the monitor issue, the lights on the side of my case are generally dark blue (but can not confirm if this is normal as I rarely pay attention to it.) The only reason I bring this up is because the lights began to turn red, then a sortof clear light color progressively throughout the next couple of weeks, eventually not turning on at all. Again, I've never really noticed the lights on my pc to begin with so this could not mean a thing.

How to enable power monitor and AGC

I tried the ni5640R ADC Input Port.vi but failed to enable AGC and Power Monitor port. The ADC_0_Port_A_RSSI and ADC_0_Port_A_AGC are both fixed numbers during the acquisition. Is there any example code for 5640R AGC and power monitoring?

[865PE/G Neo2 Series] Memory timings and power settings anyone?

I'm not very good with computers, so I've just played around with the timings on my memory, but have not found one stable setting as of yet.
The memory is brand new and I've tested it for errors on my brothers computer and there's nothing wrong there.
Intensive harddrive usage, dvd playing and intense downloading while listening to music are sure ways to crash my system. "..........Not less or equal" is the most common error message, but there are
many many more.
Oh, maybe I should point out that overheating's not an issue, cause I've good fans and run my computer without sidepanels.
I also like to say that I have the first generation of p4 with ht and 533fsb.
I'm sure there's something I forgot to mention but here below I'll paste the system summary that Sandra gave me.
Would be forever grateful if someone could help me out with the memory timings and power settings for my board. Setting it to "auto by spd" gives me a very unstable system, so no avail there.
I'm running the mem at 2.70 and sometimes at 2.65, since these two settings seem to be the ones with least crashes.
The Memory installed are 4*512mb ,kingston 512 kvr333x64c25 pc2700

Danny: 1. Yes, I've put my memory in my brothers computer, and ran memtest there, and it came out ok, but on mine it crashes almost instantly.
2. Yea, I have 2 fans blowing into the case and one out, so airflow is good, cpu is also cool and seems to be happy ;-)

Has anyone seen the blue flashing screen on MBP running 10.6.8? It looks like you are plugging in an external monitor and unplugging it over and over.

So, I have called Apple twice about this issue. Both times, I was on for almost an hour and could not get an answer. In fact, the technicians said that they had never seen this issue before. Here is how it goes.
It has happened MacBook Pro laptops anywhere from 2010 to now. I have seen it on new ones with Thunderbolt and ones a generation before. In the environment I work in, we have many, thousands from ranging from all generations. This specific issue seems to only be affecting 10.6.8. When the computer boots, it starts to flash blue as if you just plugged in an external montior, except there is no monitor, and it keeps flashing blue about once every second. I actually have a video of it on my phone that I can send to show you.
Now, like I said, this is happening to multiple laptops, all running 10.6.8. There isn't a particular action that causes it either. I have seen laptops that have been running for hours just start doing it as well as a completely cold start up do it right at the login screen. Upgrading to 10.7.x seems to solve the issue. But you have to understand, the environment I work in has thousands of computers. Upgrading many of them to Lion just for this is just not practical. In some cases, there is software that will not function correctly beyond 10.6.8.
I have scoured though Google searches for hours now looking for a similar issue and a resolution. The answer I always seem to find is just upgrade. I can't seem to find a discussion beyond 2011 that talks about it.
Can someone help me?

Disconnect other non-Apple and external hardware except (if applicable) a mouse and keyboard until your finished repairing your machine.
Problems solved: Fans blowing with no activity, machine is not booting, power button pressed and nothing happens, problems with indicators, Magsafe has wrong lights, battery is not charging, monitor and graphics issues etc. If the battery is not charged (from like letting it sleep too long), let the Mac charge up awhile afterwards.
Will not hurt the machine resetting if it's not broken.
Other related hardware problems (optional):
Check battery status: Hold option/alt key down while clicking on the battery icon in the menu bar, top right corner.
Magsafe: Use the correct/matching power supply charger with your Mac, not a less powered one from another Mac.

HT3964 For the past several months my MacBook Pro has been shutting down. I get horrible video with marks and striations acress the laptop screen and an additional monitor and the weird video problems until the multilingual notice comes up saying to shut

I used two monitors, and several months ago the MacBook Pro started crashing frequently. It seems like it might be overheating. Sometimes the disks seems to race. I leave the computer on most of the time and it sleeps when I am away, but when I come back in the morning it will have colored striations across both screens, and soon the multilingual announcement comes up that I have to press and hold down the power key.
Also, when using a progam like Skype video, the video goes insane frequently, with Skype windows freezing, video freezing, Skype window cutting in half, and eventually the computer crashing.
It seems to be a video problem.
What do I do?

I would take some screen shots of the anomalies and take the MBP to an Apple store genius bar. I you cannot reproduce the display problems, the screen shots will at least give them a start point for an analysis.

Sorry for the long copy and paste. I read that I can upgrade the video card and power supply. But atm when I play world of warcraft at ultra settings, I tend to lag really bad in the new instances with the new cat expansion that came out. I wanted to know if I should upgrade the video card and power supply for better performance or just upgrade my whole pc tower. Fyi, I am running a Acer X243w lcd flat panel monitor if that helps too.

My brother has a high end laptop with a built in, high end gaming video card (I forget which one). He's able to run the game on full-on Ultra.
I have an integrated video card which games the game on.. 'cartoon'.. mode. It's lower then low. When someone shoots a powerful spell at me, I go into a DOS Prompt. (not really, but it's pretty bad).
Funny thing is, I can still kick my brother's butt in any PVP match he wants to set up.
But I guess his graphics are pretty....
As for which video card works best, I'd have to do some research. After that graphics update they did with CAT, it's kind of a toss up again.

Thinkpad W520 with Minidock+ Series 3 - Dual monitors and USB fail sporadically

I wonder if anyone has experienced problems ThinkPad W520 and Mini Dock Plus Series 3 (Part number: 433830U)? I run into problems with dual monitor and USB devices.
For dual monitor setup, sometimes only a single monitor is detected, sometimes no monitors are available in the NVidia control panel. Rigorous display detection doesn't help. Disabling Optimus in BIOS doesn't seem to affect it. After I dock and undock couple of times, reboot, unplug the power cord, it seems to resolve and both monitors work fine.
Also, I run into troubles with USB devices (keyboard/mouse). Sometimes they are not detected at all, but if I plug them into different USB ports on the mini dock, they are detected and work fine.
For me this problem happens about 50% of the time when I dock... Any ideas, insights or suggestions are greatly appreciated. Could it be a faulty Thinkpad, docking station or may be both? I really to upgrade next time to W530, but I've been through so many problems with W520, so I don't know if it's a good idea...

If system update isn't finding anything, and the system works just fine on its own, it could potentially be a faulty Dock.
It could be overloaded. Could you try testing the dock using just one monitor, and no keyboard or mouse, to see if you run into the same issue. It would still be a faulty dock, but it may be a potential workaround for the time being.

Aspire V3-571 not providing connected signal to monitor in power save

I recently reconfigured a number of my systems, and ended up with an Acer monitor on my Acer Aspire - the monitor had previously been used with a Dell laptop. You would think two Acer products would work better together, but it's actually slightly worse. When an external monitor is used with VGA, there are three states: the computer is driving video down the wire, the cable is connected but the computer is not sending video, and cable disconnected. The monitor can recognize these states and behave accordingly. The middle state, when the computer is either in power save mode or turned off, is the problem. In such a case, the monitor should simply blank the screen and go into its own power save mode - which it did with my Dell. With the Aspire, the monitor goes into disconnected cable mode (where it displays a moving error message forever) as soon as power save kicks in and the laptop stops sending video. This is no big deal when the laptop is off, since I can just turn off the monitor and save some electricity. But it's really annoying when the computer is on. This is especially true since this same monitor worked perfectly well with the Dell laptop. So the Acer machine is not providing a "proper" signal for some reason. My question is - does anyone know of some configuration option on the Aspire that will cause it to send a signal that the monitor will recognize as power save when the laptop is in that state - or off? Thanks for the reply. Good suggestion about checking for new drivers - always useful. Alas, there were none, but it did give me a chance to revisit the VESA DPMS spec that governs such things. Described well here:https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/VESA_Display_Power_Management_Signaling I had forgotten that there were two intermediate levels (HSYNC on VSYNC off and the opposite). Obviously On and Off are seen by the monitor, with the latter interpreted as cable disconnect. I just don't seem to get one of the other states from the Aspire like I did from the Dell. The Intel HD4000 chipset in the Aspire claims to support DPMS, it just isn't working the way it worked with the Dell. That machine uses an older Intel graphics chipset. Once I had an oscilloscope in my garage and I could have looked at the pins to see what is being sent to the connector. No longer. I guess I just live with this unless a new driver shows up, or someone comes up with another solution.

LG Monitor entering power saving mode despite thunderbolt connection

I have a full boat 2013 rMBP connected to a LG 34UM95 though thunderbolt and it has been working flawlessly for about 4 months. One connection from the laptop to the monitor and my external drives connected to the monitor. It has been great.
Until today
For whatever reason, my rMBP isn't detecting the monitor. It isn't showing up in preference or apple menu. I know the thunderbolt port is working as the drives are still visible that are connected to the monitor, but I can't run dual display or clamshell mode. I have rebooted several times, both the monitor and laptop.

The searching I have done has revealed some NVIDIA card issues causing some challenges for others, so I hope it isn't anything like that.

Remove all display cable extenders, KVM switches, or other like devices and retest to determine if the issue is resolved.
Try unplugging the video adapter or cable and then plug it back in.
If more than one video adapter is in use (or "daisy-chained"), troubleshoot by using only one adapter.
Example: A mini DisplayPort to DVI adapter connected to a DVI to HDMI adapter is an unsupported configuration because there is a series of adapters in use.
If available, try using a different display and or adapter (or use a different connector by using DVI instead of VGA, for instance).
Reset the system
You can reset the Mac's parameter RAM and SMC.Reset the resolution
Start by resetting the Mac's parameter RAM. If the display does not come up, was previously set to an unsupported resolution, and still results in no video:
Start up in Safe Mode.
From the Apple () menu, choose System Preferences.
Choose Displays from the View menu to open the preferences pane.
Select any resolution and refresh rate that your display supports.
Restart your computer.

23" Monitor - No Power with G4 867MHz PowerPC

I have had the 23" Cinema Display (aluminum model) for 6 months now. 2 months ago the monitor stopped working - I replaced the power adapter - and eveything ran fine.
I went away for 2 weeks and the monitor would not turn on upon return from my trip. I packed up the entire monitor and went to the Genius bar. The monitor powered right up (with my adapter) on the notebook the tech plugged it into. I wanted to scream. I came home, attached it back to my G4 and it worked fine. 2 days later - the same thing - no power.
I unplugged everything again - re-plugged (it worked last time) but still nothing. Short of taking my entire system into the Genius bar ... has anyone else had this problem?
The graphics card is (I believe) a GeForce 4 MX, NVDA, Display A.
I currently have a Dell 15" flat screen monitor hooked up to the G4 - with a VGA to DVI converter and it works fine.
Please - if anyone can help I would be greatly in debt to you! Thanks in advance!

Yes, i have the exact same problem. In my case its the adapter - twice!!
Apple is in the process of getting me a new Power Adapter, but I am not sure how long would that survive.
I bought a Cinema 23 / G5 5 months back, and this is my second power adapter issue
I am starting to think some thing is wrong with the moniter/adapter.

Odd problem using mini display cord and power cord at the same time

When i connect my mbp to a monitor/tv while running on ac the macbook freezes totally. As soon as i plug in the power cord while running an external monitor the cpu usage goes crazy. Kernal task reporting 100.1 % cpu usage and also high cpu usage (powered, syslogd and configd). The only way to unfreeze the macbook is to unplug the power cord. When i do this the laptop runs perfectly fine again while connected to my monitor.
The odd thing is that it was running totally fine a few hours ago. but after waking up my mac its showing this issue.
Would love to get feedback.

I use a KVM switch with a Dell monitor that has DVI and VGA inputs. I only route the K an M portions (keyboard and mouse) through the switch. The computers connect directly via VGA and DVI to the Monitor, and then I use the monitor's switch to make the video switch. Works fine. Don't worry about taxing the monitor.
I'd suggest buying the KVM switch from a vendor with easy return policies, since it can take a few tries to find a model you like.
