27in i7 iMac STILL won't install win7 64bit - I am using fix released 1/19

Yes I know the new Bootcamp is out and I am following this guide word for word:
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3986
Just to be clear I want to install Windows 7 Professional 64-bit on a very new 27 inch i7 iMac.
I ran software update to make sure I had the latest everything including the update to the display drivers (I did this on 1/19/10). I have a ATI Radeon HD 4850 with ROM Revision: 113-B9110C-425
I followed this article TO THE LETTER to create the USB thumb drive with the extra drivers needed to make the process work:
http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3173
Despite the fact that that article is specifically supposed to fix "a black screen during installation of Windows 7 using Boot Camp" IT DOES NOT FIX IT. I still get that exact same problem.
I have tried THREE times tonight and made sure to follow every step carefully. I don't really understand how this USB drive with the missing drivers is supposed to work. According to the article you just leave it plugged in and during the install process windows 7 install will find it and everything will work.
It does not work! Can anyone with a 27 i7 iMac get this process to work? Can you give me a step by step that is different than the official Apple version?
I don't know what to do.

Well I understand that is the method that the USB drive is using. Sounds very clever except for the fact that it DOES NOT WORK. At least on a i7 iMac it doesn't work. I don't know why but I can promise you I followed the USB drive method very closely and it did not work as the Apple support page said it would. The only way to get it to work is to delete the display driver driver manually, which I described how to do in my second post.
It worked fine on my i7 iMac but not the first time. After it failed I reformated my USB thumb drive making sure it used MBR for the partition table and FAT16 for the file system format. I then copied the XML file and the driver folder back over to the root of the USB thumb drive . I also deleted the partial install of Win7 by repartioning my internal drive again with boot camp assistant and then did the install. This time it worked fine.
I think my partition table may have been wrong since I did not check that when I reformatted my USB thumb drive the first time. I was too stupid to check what it was before I reformated the second time so I'm not sure exactly what I did wrong the first time. I know the USB thumb drive was formatted FAT16 the first time though and nothing else was different. So in my case I believe that was the issue
Obviously YMMV... While it does not work for you, you cannot state IT DOES NOT WORK for all. Just like I cannot say that checking your USB thumb drive partition table and file system WILL fix it for you. There are probably other variables at work here.
On that note, my OS X was a fresh install (right out of the box) AND I had not hooked up anything else to it besides keyboard and mouse, I even had the Ethernet cable unplugged.
For me it's time to work on the banding issue... but that's another post

I have done all the usual maintenance steps (repair permissions, repair disk, etc) and it still won't install. All goes well until the installer gets to "Running Package Scripts" then it stalls or hangs up and does not finish the installation. It runs and runs and runs. It never finishes. I wind up having to force quit the installer. Can anyone point me in the right direction?

    Hi jtento ,
Kindly enable the Root Account for the MAC and then try the installation there (in the root account). Please find below the URL to enable the root account.

    Try:
    - Reset the iOS device. Nothing will be lost
Reset iOS device: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - sign out and the sign back into Game Center
    - Reset all settings
Go to Settings > General > Reset and tap Reset All Settings.
All your preferences and settings are reset. Information (such as contacts and calendars) and media (such as songs and videos) aren’t affected.
    - Restore from backup. See:
iOS: Back up and restore your iOS device with iCloud or iTunes
    - Restore to factory settings/new iOS device.

Are you talking about changing the keyboard layout when you are working in Windows?  If so, you need to tell people how you are running it (bootcamp, parallels, other) and whether you have already done stuff like

  • My imac intel won't install the installation cds correctly.

I have the white imac intel computer and I tried to reinstall the installation cds that came with the mac because my computer for whatever reason started going slower and slower. The thing is when I tried to reinstall the cds, the first cd did not install correctly. For some reason the first cd counted down the time from 64 hours, it took two days and when it was finished I got a black screen and a lot of error messages. Something about the DNS server, the airport driver isn't installed, and something about the local?. Everytime I try to install the first cd it want start up and it tells me to install the second cd and when I try to install the second cd it won't install. The blue line only goes so far and then it just hangs there and I get more error messages. Is there a way to reinstall the first cd to correct the problems without the computer telling me to take the first cd out and insert the second cd? Or is there something I can do to fix my imac so it will work again?

Hi Evie, and a warm welcome to the forums!
Power down the iMac with #1 Install disk in the drive.
Bott up while holding the d key down at boot-up and run the extended Apple HW Test first.
If we still can't boot from the Install disk, Resetting your Mac's PRAM and NVRAM
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=2238
    Where are we now?
We have some serious corruption on the HD, so we're going to try to get it to boot off the #1 disk to fox that.
    "Try Disk Utility
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc that came with your computer, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, *you must select your language first.)*
*Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.*
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.
    5. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    6. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."
Then Safe Boot off the HD & use Disk Utility from there to Repair Permissions, reboot once more.
Safe Boot... holding Shift key down at bootup.

  • ITunes won't install on my Toshiba - it used to have iTunes!

iTunes won't install. It used to have iTunes, but I cleared it off when I thought I no longer needed the computer (big mistake). Now it's my only computer and I want iTunes back, but when I try to install it it reads "This installation package cannot be installed by the Windows installer package. You must install a Windows service pack that contains a newer version of the Windows Installer Service."
Now, how do I do that? I tried faffing about with installing this and that yesterday, but none of it seemed to work. I'm a stupid girl with no computer skills - I need definitive instructions!

Now, see, I did try that. My computer is now happily updating itself where it wasn't before, but still the same message. I also went and searched Google for a 'Windows Service Pack 2', which lead me to the microsoft site, which gave me the option of downloading the service pack. "Oh good!" I thought, "This will be fixed in no time!"
    Wrong.
I downloaded said service pack, tried to run it and it too decided not to work. It sprung up a message that was something like "There is nothing on your computer that needs this pack" or something like that.
Is my computer just so old that it's beyond saving? It is far older than a laptop should be, I know. I bought it in 2003. (I'd also like to point out that I'm not daft, I DID have a brand new laptop - which decided it didn't fancy having a working motherboard anymore. Clearly my ancient Toshiba is far more reliable.)

  • Installed Win7 64bit but can't install Bootcamp

    Hi all,
Just installed Windows 7 64 bit but can't get Bootcamp to install. Downloaded 3.2 (64) update but that requires 3.1. Downloaded 3.1 (64) update but that requires 3.0. 3.0 won't install from the DVD as it doesn't support the 64 bit Windows 7.
Is there a version I can download or do I have to get rid of that install and do it all again using the 32 bit version?
    Stuart

Head to (better yet, copy the contents to a folder)
    Navigate to Apple \ Drivers \ Bootcamp64.msi
control click and select Compatibility Mode and choose "Vista"
You just have to force it a little.
May also get a warning from Windows that it isn't compatible or known to cause trouble (true) but install anyway.
AppleHFS feature can be buggy and lead to Bsod.
I keep that renamed and therefore disabled, use Paragon HFS or MacDrive8 instead, commercial but at least they work better.
Apple didn't 'bless' some of us with older EFI32 (trouble booting DVD and other issues) and even mid 2008 iMac had 64-bit ROM and processor at a time when MacBook, MacBook Pro, and Mac Pro all were on the "supported" list for Vista 64-bit, the iMac was not

  • Flash Player Won't Install - ActiveX and "Currently In Use" errors

    Hi all,
I can't get Adobe Flash Player 10.3 to install.  I've followed the subinacl steps (http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/494/cpsid_49419.html) and all other suggestions about using the uninstaller, rebooting and reinstalling.  I'm a smart guy, but can't figure this one out.  Does anyone have any suggestions?
    System:
    Windows XP SP3 32-bit

    Flash Player won't install
Thanks for any suggestions you can offer.

Can you give us the full error message you are getting?

  • Qosmio F50 - Need to update BIOS in order of installing Win7-64bit

    Dear community,
I plan to update to Windows 7 64 bit. My notebook is Toshiba Qosmio F50-10M with a preinstalled VISTA32bit.
Is there a need to update the BIOS prior installing the new OS? I read that there is a BIOS update f?¼r VISTA64bit available but none I discovered for Win7 64bit.
    Can you give a clue?
I am confident and glad to own such a powerful notebook but this not completed OS named VISTA is driving me nuts increasingly reading all those nice reports concerning the benefits of Windows7!
Eager to read your welcomed responses
    Yours,
    Starmind

    Thank you for anwering Paolo!
Do I understand the right way? I shouldn´t change BIOS if I don´t encounter any problems?
But I should change the BIOS from 32 to 64 bit if I install the 64bit version of Win7? I intend to do so as I plan to use the full memory of my machine (I use VISTA32 at the moment).
I should change the BIOS prior installing Win7 as I understood as posted earlier?
Thank your for your kind assistance!

  • I need drivers to install Win7 64bit on SSD mSATA

    Hi!
I need drivers to install WIN7 64x on SSD mSATA THNSNH256GMCT
Serial number on my product is 23NS10BFTABY
    Thank you!

This serial number doesn't help much. It will be better if you can post exact notebook model name and model number.
Anyway, visit Toshiba support and download page for your country and if your notebook model is supported for Win7 64bit you should be able to find all necessary drivers, tools and utilities.

  • 5.0.1 Still Won't Install: 1920

I down loaded 5.0.1 and tried to install it. Each time I still get the 1920 error. I did this about 10 times. Still no good. I've tried installing with Norton turned off. Still doesn't work. I downloaded the latest Quicktime thinking that iTunes would work since it's 'attached' to that. The install went fine, but iTunes won't open that way. I plug in the iPod, and iTunes won't come up. This is making my Walkman look really good. WHAT DO I DO NOW? When is Apple going to get this fixed? It's not Windows' or Norton's fault that Apple's program isn't compatible.
    Computers are for robots.

I rebooted two or three times, and it finally came up.
    well done Jonathan!
I suspect this was actually your Norton suppressing the launch ... occasionally rebooting can get you past the "silent blocking" problem that causes the launch suppression.
but no matter. i'm just glad you're up and running again.
