280x BIOS

Hi, I'm new here.
I just purchased 2x MSI 280x and based upon some reviews I read that I need to update to the latest bios.
I'm a bit confused as to what updating to newer bios does? what program should I be using?
also, separate question.
Will 750 watt PSU be enough for 280x crossfire?

750W means nothing. Important are the amps on +12v. A system with one R9-280X requires 30A and a 550W psu minimum. If wanting to crossfire two the psu should at least offer 50A minimum. 60A would be safer in maximum load situations (NOT considering oc). A quality 750W psu like Corsair TX750 offers 60A on +12v. To have some headroom more is better. I'd go for Corsair GS800 (65A) or similar/better psu.

  • Request for 280x BIOS

    Hello.
My current BIOS version taken from GPUZ
    The S/N of my card:
    602-V277-19SB130904
I would appreciate a link on how to properly perform the BIOS update since I wouldn't like to find a "non sanctioned" guide and brick my card.
    Thank you very much.

I can not get this BIOS to work to update my 280X cards :( comes up with subsystem mismatch when I use the Winflash utility
Because the vbios is NOT meant for your cards. The vbios provided for OP is for S/N 602-V277-19SBxxxx not 602-v277-26sbxxxx. Don't flash any vbios. It has been said just before...

Will this work for any MSI 280x card? or are there different version for different serial numbers?
Quote from: Svet on 14-November-13, 10:32:30
no vbios images are only some cards
Quote from: asch on 26-November-13, 00:07:58
I have the same bios as the OP.
Every review i saw on MSI's R9 280x have the 015.040.000.000.003435 bios mod.
I found the rom at techpowerup dot com (cant post link?!)
    Is it safe?
I never done a flash bios on a vga before.... does anyone has a guide on how to proceed?
See above. You can't flash any random vbios even if it is from the same model. Different batches are using different versions. "015.040.000.000.003435" is NOT a vbios version. Those numbers from GPU-Z are useless. Actual vbios versions can only be readout with a hex reader. A vbios needs to match the batch of card which is identified by checking the S/N. nything else can result in bricking your card.

  • New R9 280X BIOS revision - undervolting required

Hey guys I'll try keep this as short an concise as possible whilst still being thorough
    I have bought 3 R9 280X's two have arrived with a different PCB/revision
    S/N 602-V277-28SB - 1  older rev. boards - BIOS
    Bios version 0.15.040.000.000.003435 (113-C3865000-G77)
    S/N 602-V277-44SB - 2 newer rev. board - BIOS
    Bios version 0.15.042.000.003.000000 (113-C865000-X77)
I have dumped the 28SB BIOS and undervolted to 1.050 volts using ATIflash & VBE7 to modify the voltages which has worked well. However the same method for the 44SB cards results in an non functioning card when 3d acceleration is required so I am forced to use the original BIOS which has no Vcore functionality
please see attached dump of original 44SB BIOS
    mediafire(dotcom)/?fwvaaz3c3za9zd6
I need to lower the Vcore of these GPU's, currently the cards are sitting at ~90C under 100% load, this will not make for a long life span, I will be improving the airflow however lowering the Vcore is an easy way to knock 200-300 watts of TDP away, look for a max temp of 60-70C
Edit; I have tried the usual software AB & Trixx to no avail

Quote from: lejimmy on 19-January-14, 08:33:59
Thanks for this post, applied those AB configuration, however my cfg file was named MSIAfterburner.cfg
Almost exactly the same situation as hypnoticspector, I have the same carbide air 540s.
Both cards with the 44SB and 042 Bios.
First card is hitting 97C and the second card is at 80C and fans at 100%.
Using these cards for mining so these temperatures are rather unacceptable.
you shop at cyberpowerpc.com too?  love this case and the setup, just wish the temps would stay at 72ºc like so many review sites have shown. they're gonna get a lot of rmas...
i tried cleaning and reapplying 10.2w/mk thermal paste, top 5 stuff according to several sites, and it did not help. manually undervolting through bios and underclocking through afterburner slightly helps but only on one card, and it hits 80-82º which is still not acceptable. apologies for broaching any forum taboos, not sure how to edit my posts.

    Hi ,

    s/n 602- V277 -28SB1311073...
I have heard about a lots of issues with VRM overheating and cooler problems,
I tried more cards in windows 8.1 64bit,they are going to 75´C than the driver often shut down ,  I tried to add more power+20% with MSI AB3.0.0 beta 17 , and can move the CoreClock slider down to lover the clockcore from 1020mhz to 1000mhz, the voltage is auto set to 1.2V(over 1000mhz)1.144V(less 1000mhz) but
I am not able to lover the voltage vCore slider in MSI AfterBurner manually alone, the voltage is fixed to 1.2V ...is there any bios which can move with voltage for these cards ? especially to lover the
voltage to 1.04V or 0.99V ? I dont need so much heating and unstabile bios as this is...mabye some original older bios ?
    Thanks for info..,?
Why MSI AFTERBURNER 3.0.0 beta 17 is NOT ABLE to set voltage ?? (the settings is checked to allow ...off course)
What bios are available now for this cards? mabye some stable older bios ?
    THANKS for help /info
I used to power supply over 1300W , and durable MB with no problem with old amd 7950 before
can I try bios VER015.040.000.000.003435 instead of the original VER015.040.000.003.003435 ?

Quote from: MaTrek on 16-December-13, 03:26:27
Thanks a lot for tip ,but this bios is just 4hours older than the original one ,
It was necessary to use aticomand -fa to flash "the same version" although the bios was flashed well ,
the problem with locked voltage is it still here...
so it was not helpfull for me...
I reinstalled with (uninstall first) catalyst and ms afterburner and checked trixx
Do you think bios VER015.040.000.000.003435 instead of the original VER015.040.000.003.003435 should not run corectly ?
Is it 100% suicide or is just a common risk and could it run corectly ?
On the internet are more infos about the functioning core voltage function with this bios in combination with force constant voltage...
Its different just in the one number...
VER015.040.000.000.003435 is the first where can man move Vcore minus 100mA. in MS AB working for a while...will see if stable..
what do the command -noaper in atiflash ? I dont know such a command in atiflash commands ...what do that exactly ? thanks for info
    Have a nice night.
I have been running more cards s/n 602- V277 -28SB131107.... together with VER015.040.000.000.003435 instead of the original VER015.040.000.003.003435 for more than 2 days nonstop without any problem,
    win 8.1 64bit
    GPU 1000Mhz
    MEM 1500Mhz
    Power +20%
    Core Voltage -94mV
    MSI AB 3.0.0 B17
version restrictions +/-100mV but unlocked / no force voltage needed
temp 69-79'C depend on the daily  room temperature...
But cannot clock more than 1050Mhz with lower voltage or it goes to shut down catalyst driver logicaly
Still waiting for better vbios ....the original 330MS /MH was useless with bug of high locked voltage...
need some vbios with open voltage control in MS AB or with at least another soft...
VBE7 & voltage correction doesnt work
HOWEVER ITS NOT RECOMMENDED TO FLASH VBIOS FOR ANOTHER SERIES... SO rather do that not and ask MSI for a new vbios with improved unlocked voltage at least +/-150mV

Never download random vbios files from such sites as you linked to. It's not enough that the vbios is for a specific vga model as different batches are using different versions. Even a vbios for the same model can kill your card. The right version must be verified by S/N

  • Help!!! with 970A-G46 Bios Update / Asus R9 280x Dcu II

Ok so i recently got the Asus r9 280x dcu II card for ugrading and when i installed it, i started the computer, but i was not getting anything on my monitor. The computer works fine with my old gpu Radeon HD 7770, but when i installed this one, the computer would not post.
Im wondering if it is my motherboard bios that i need to update in order for it to post because i have not updated my bios yet and maybe the card only works if my motherboard is on the latest bios.
Also about the bios update. Last night i tried to update and i got to update to version 1.B0 (1.11). But i checked for new bios at the support download page for this board and saw that new versions were at the 2.0 level and the latest bios is version 2.6.
I tried to update the bios with the version 2.6 .exe file in a formatted flash drive but everytime the pc restarted, it would not go to the bios update screen. And also on the bios menu when i click on m fash it did not work it gave me a message which i cant remember right now.
    I would appreciate the help.
    Thanks

Yesss!!!!  I got it to work. All i had to do was clear my cmos and it worked
