29 hours with my iPod - and it's SCRATCHED TO %#!!

I baby my gadgets. They've got a special place in my home, safe from food, sharp objects, curious hands, etc etc etc.
That being said, I've had my new 5th gen Video iPod for 27 hours now, and it's already scratched up more than the 4th gen U2 ipod that I've had for 9 months.
I'm not one to complain about inevitable wear and tear, but this is just ridiculous. Whatever they've made this new iPod out of is less durable than jewel-case plastic. I can appreciate that Apple is trying to target the price of their player to be more competitive, but I can't believe they've done it at the expense of quality.
Literally, this screen scratches if you touch it with your fingernail. (and I bite my nails, so they're pretty dull.... must be from the stress of spending $400 on a gadget that hasn't held up to 2 days worth of use!)
I know the Nano had screen quality problems, and I think Apple is being sued over it - Did they just use the same material for the 5g?
Anyone else finding the same?

You're right, in retrospect I really should have left the original screen protector on. Truthfully, I just didn't foresee this problem. It's not that difficult to make plastic fairly scratch resistant, so it didn't even occur to me that this problem would BE a problem. My fault in part, I knew about the Nano problems before I got my 5th gen, and should have connected the dots before removing the factory screen protector.
I guess I'm just really disappointed with Apple for not being concerned with consumer needs a bit more - we're spending a lot of money on their audio players - that consideration should go both ways.

  • Macworld 07: ipod and cell phone scratch proof casing?

for anyone who's attended the 2007 macworld. there was a booth for ipod and cell phone casing that was said to be scratch proof it was rubbery and clear. and when you put it on it doesnt look like you have a casing on it, the casing is completely clear.
i dont remember the name of the site they sell them on. im guessing along the lines of scratch proof and i believe the logo was neon green?!
i really want to buy one because im sick of getting my ipod and cell phones scratched.
it wasnt iskin either. i dont want graphics. just a clear case.

The iPods are so beautiful, but they are so easily scratched. However, there are lots of screen protectors out there. TrendyGeek has one that clings onto the screen and to the metal back of the iPod by static (you will soon discover that the metal back of the iPod is even EASIER to scratch and get fingerprints on!). They last about a month apiece, under rigorous conditions, and would have lasted longer for me if I wasn't an idiot and could put them on right.
Another solution for the metal back of the iPod is a mod I have tried myself and it works nicely. You can give it a brushed stainless steel look by rubbing an SOS pad up and down repeatedly on the back and on the sides. This shouldn't void your warranty. It looks cool, is more consistent with Apple's brushed metal theme, and it makes fingerprints and other small scratches less obvious. And if it ever does get scratched again, simply use the SOS pad again, and it looks good as new!

    Back up all data.
This procedure will unlock all your user files (not system files) and reset their ownership and access-control lists to the default. If you've set special values for those attributes on any of your files, they will be reverted. In that case, either stop here, or be prepared to recreate the settings if necessary. Do so only after verifying that those settings didn't cause the problem. If none of this is meaningful to you, you don't need to worry about it.
    Step 1
If you have more than one user account, and the one in question is not an administrator account, then temporarily promote it to administrator status in the Users & Groups preference pane. To do that, unlock the preference pane using the credentials of an administrator, check the box marked Allow user to administer this computer, then reboot. You can demote the problem account back to standard status when this step has been completed.
Triple-click the following line to select it. Copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C):
    { sudo chflags -R nouchg,nouappnd ~ $TMPDIR.. ; sudo chown -Rh $UID:staff ~ $_ ; sudo chmod -R u+rwX ~ $_ ; chmod -R -N ~ $_ ; } 2> /dev/null
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window (command-V). You'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. You may get a one-time warning not to screw up. If you don’t have a login password, you’ll need to set one before you can run the command. If you see a message that your username "is not in the sudoers file," then you're not logged in as an administrator.
The command will take a noticeable amount of time to run. Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign (“$”) to appear, then quit Terminal.
    Step 2 (optional)
The first step should give you usable permissions in your home folder. This step will restore special attributes set by OS X on some user folders to protect them from unintended deletion or renaming. You can skip this step if you don't consider that protection to be necessary.
Boot into Recovery by holding down the key combination command-R at startup. Release the keys when you see a gray screen with a spinning dial.
When the OS X Utilities screen appears, select
    Utilities ▹ Terminal
from the menu bar. A Terminal window will open.
In the Terminal window, type this:
    resetpassword
That's one word, all lower case, with no spaces. Then press return. A Reset Password window will open. You’re not  going to reset a password.
Select your boot volume ("Macintosh HD," unless you gave it a different name) if not already selected.
Select your username from the menu labeled Select the user account if not already selected.
Under Reset Home Directory Permissions and ACLs, click the Reset button.
    Select
     ▹ Restart
    from the menu bar.

    To restore from backup see:
iOS: Back up and restore your iOS device with iCloud or iTunes
If you restore from iCloud backup the apps will be automatically downloaded. If you restore from iTunes backup the apps and music have to be in the iTunes library since synced media like apps and music are not included in the backup of the iOS device that iTunes makes.
You can redownload most iTunes purchases by:

Hi. I was in bed chewing gum, with my ipod, and i fell asleep. When i woke up, there was gum all over the screen.  Any ideas how to get it off?

Well, you shouldn't use your iPod to chew gum with.  That's what your teeth are for.
Peanut butter and chocolate are good for getting gum out of your hair and off of your clothing....
But you may want to have someone else do this for you....

  • Itunes Library sharing with multiple ipods and 2 pc's

Hi, I have a new Ipod nano and want to use my wifes itunes library with my ipod. Which according to the tech stuff I can share the content by enabling on wifes pc. Done that, which I can now see library on my Acer laptop. However, I can't sync my playlist from her pc to my itunes. I want to download my own podcasts etc.. not clutter her itunes pc. When I transfer the ipod back to my pc it then wants to delete and re-sync.
We have 3 ipods in the house and 2 pc's.
Whats the best way of using the ipods and getting the most out of itunes?
    Thanks

If you want to connect and use an iPod on more than one computer or with more than one library you need to change the update preference in the iPod Summary tab to "Manually manage music and videos" and click Apply. The content of iTunes and the iPod are not syncronised in this mode so the two can be different. You can directly access the content of the iPod and play it through iTunes and you can drag and drop whatever you want to the iPod from either library:

  • Family with multiple iPods and multiple iTunes - can we share songs?

I am sure I am not the only one in this situation. There are 4 computers in our house, and 3 individuals with there own iPods. Can one iPod owner who has her own library on her PC go to my son's PC and connect to his iTunes Library to get just one song that he purchased? She tried to "drag" a song from his library onto her iPod, but it wouldn't allow her to. She got some message saying her iPod already has it's own library. Are you saying she can't get one song that I paid for? How are we able to share songs on multiple PCs?

  • Can you face time with your ipod and macbook with the same apple id?

I am going to England soon and plan on taking my ipod and leaving my macbook home so I can face time with my family. Is this possible to do if my macbook and ipod are both using my apple id?

Having spent approximately £1500/US2000 on their flag products it is bit damaging for such a leading and reputable company on market to ask for even more money...
It's an OPTIONAL extra. If you want it, you pay - just like everything else in life.
If you bought a laptop from Dell, HP or whoever and you decided you wanted extra RAM, above what comes included, would you expect to get that for free too, just because you spent $2000 on the laptop?
If you bought a car and decided you wanted the optional sun roof, would you expect to get that for free because the car cost $30,000?
If you bought a pizza from Domino's and decided you wanted some extra toppings above what comes as standard, would you expect those for free too?
Dropbox, Google Drive, Microsoft SkyDrive, SugarSync etc. all provide a certain amount of storage space for free as standard but if you want more, you pay.
If you had decided to switch to an Android tablet rather than an iPad, Google would also give you a limited amount of cloud storage space for free, but if you need more, you pay. You think Google or Microsoft give away extra storage space for free?
Your expectations are completely unrealistic and out of touch with what is the 'norm' on this planet. Quite ridiculous.
