2900 XL Switch Port issues

Hi all
I have a 2900 XL switch. I tried to connect a computer to a switchport and the port led did not light up.
1. Can i say that the switchport is faulty?
2. If i do not plug in any PC to a switchport. Will I get line is administratively up and line protocol is up when i type in the sh int fa0/21 command where fa0/21 is the port that i want to see. ?
Hope someone can help. Thanks in advance.
Regards
Alan

Hi Alan,
In case if your port LED is not lighting up when you connect you workstation, it is a strong possibility that the port is in shutdown state. Please go to the interface config and execute the command "no shut" and the port should come up if it is not failed.
You can also use the command "show port status" to find the status of the ports.
If the port is shutdown it will show as Administratively down. and if nothing is connected both the line and the protocol will be down.
Hope this helps.

  • Time Capsule, NAS and Switch port issues

I purchased a Time Capsule yesterday I can get the wifi to work but I am having some other issues.
I need to be able to attach an exisiting Western Digital NAS drive to the TC through ethernet. When I connect it, it shows up in the finder but will not connect.
I also need to be able to connect a Switch port into the TC as well. The switch runs ethernet thoughout the building to wall jacks as well as running a dedicated PC server.
When I plug both these devices into the ISP modem/router they work but the TC wont recognize them.
Am I missing some settings or steps that I need to take to make this work?

Did you put the TC into bridge mode.. ??
If it is a router.. all kinds of bad things can happen.. like dhcp server is working and double NAT preventing access.. much like you describe.
Setup the TC in isolation from the network. before you plug it in.
Bridge in v5 utility.. (if you run lion it is easy to download and install is still preferred).
Bridge in v6 utility go to the Network tab and change it from DHCP and NAT to off bridge mode.
Picture pending if you need it.

  • ESW 540 24 port switch ports issue

    hello,
very randomly the ports on the switch stop working and the only way to get them to work again is by resetting the port. we have cisco ip phones connected to the ports and computers connected to the back of the phone.
what i've notices when the phones or computers stop working is that if i unplug the cable from the switch
the LED on the bottom right corner of the port will remain Lid. if i check the config the port shows "suspended"
could you please let me know a better way to resolve this problem, i don't want to reset my switches every day once or twice a day because this is happening so often
    thanks

That is normal behavior as those ports share switch fabric resources with the GBICs.  When installed the GBIC will have priority and the associated ports (12 & 24) will not be operational.  You seem to have them configured correctly.

  • 802.1X Authentication issues when moving between switch ports

    Hi Guys,
We are having some issues at our office where when users move from one switch to another, the 802.1X authentication does not want to take place. The PC just gets an APIPA address. Now I have read about features that MAC Move and MAC replace but they seem to be used when moving from one port a switch to another port on that same switch. Will MAC move help for issues between switches? And should I focus my attention on the switch's configuration or have a look at the NPS server that might be blocking that authentication as the user is already authenticated?
My configuration we have on the switch ports look as follows:
    authentication host-mode multi-domain

  • Can't get switch ports to work

Okay so I have a basic home lab, 2600 router x2 and 2900 XL switch x 2. I've connected each router together (they "see" each other in cdp), and each router to one switch. My problem is that the interfaces that the router connects to the switch won't accept an ip address, (it says unrecognized command) and the switch lights are off). A "show status" says only the trunk port (22 on each switch) are connected. I've checked the cabling, it works, and the cables are out of the box. What am I missing/forgetting?
Sorry if i newb :\ I'm Looking forward to going over static routes xD
    Thanks,

  • Enumerate switch ports

I need a way to list out the last mac address known to port-security per port in IOS, and EEM may be my answer.
The command  "show port-security address" gets me close - it shows current mac on all up ports, like:
    > AS5#show port-security address
    >         Secure Mac Address Table
    > ------------------------------------------------------------------------
    > Vlan   Mac Address       Type                     Ports   Remaining Age
    >                                                             (mins)
    > ----   -----------       ----                     -----   -------------
    >   6   001d.e5ea.a1d5   SecureDynamic           Gi1/0/26   < 1
    >   6   0007.7d43.638b   SecureDynamic           Gi1/0/31   < 1
    >   6   0050.6003.76ce   SecureDynamic           Gi1/0/40   < 1
    >   1   0050.b607.c3a3   SecureDynamic           Gi1/0/43   < 1
    >   1   c42c.030c.05d4   SecureDynamic           Gi1/0/44   < 1
    >   1   0023.5e20.a48e   SecureDynamic           Gi1/0/45   < 1
    > ------------------------------------------------------------------------
however, I also need the last mac known to the port. For example "show port-security int g7/11" has the info I need:
    > DEVON-3RDFL-138-4#sh port-security int gi 7/11
    > Port Security             : Enabled
    > Port Status               : Secure-down
    > Violation Mode             : Restrict
    > Aging Time                 : 1 mins
    > Aging Type                 : Absolute
    > Maximum MAC Addresses     : 1
    > Total MAC Addresses       : 0
    > Configured MAC Addresses   : 0
    > Sticky MAC Addresses       : 0
    > Last Source Address       : d4be.d995.8159 <-- We are looking for > this, but we may not know which port it was last connected to...
    > Last Source Address VlanId : 455
    > Security Violation Count   : 0
However, enumerating all ports on a switch to find which one has a specific mac address is painful.
So, my intent is to wrte an EEM script that will enumerate all ports on a switch and hold that in an array that I can then sequentially run commands again.
Surely someone has already written a script to enumerate all switch interfaces.   Anyone know where to find it?
    Thanks,
    Neville

    Thanks Joseph!
With your code I got my script working! I'm attaching it here.
    Some notes of mine.
    1) I sure like PERL *a lot* more than TCL.   I find TCL weird where I don't do a ; at the end of lines, don't declare my variables with $ and not having a conecpt of an @array is killing me!
    2) I changed the 1st part of the script from port-security ports to all Ethernet interfaces. If a port is down it does not show in "show port-security adresses", where it will show with "show interface summary | inc Ethernet".
    3) I added Catalyst switches output port-security info two ways: either "Last Source Address : aa.bb.cc.dd.ee.ff"  (older code) or "Last Source Address:Vlan : aa.bb.cc.dd.ee.ff:1" (newer code).   I added logic to deal with either output.
    4) The script seems to run pretty slow. It takes ~15 seconds for a switch with 24 interfaces on it.  In a stack I'd run into MAXRUN time issues for sure.
Again thanks Joseph! - Finished Script below:

  • Switch port in dot1x multi-auth mode stops passing traffic

    Dear All,
I am experiencing a problem on a Catalyst 4510 (cat4500-ipbasek9-mz.122-53.SG.bin) with 802.1x configured. Client PCs are connected via a mini desktop switch to a Cat 4510 switched port in multi-auth mode. The configuration of the port follows:
    interface GigabitEthernet2/34
    switchport mode access
ip arp inspection limit rate 30
    authentication host-mode multi-auth
    authentication port-control auto
    authentication periodic
    authentication timer reauthenticate server
    dot1x pae authenticator
    dot1x timeout tx-period 5
    dot1x max-reauth-req 6
    spanning-tree portfast
    ip verify source vlan dhcp-snooping
    end
It happens from time to time that the Cat 4510 port stops passing traffic. Reconnecting the mini switch recovers the communication. Client PCs connected to the mini switch seem to be authorized at the moment when the problem occures. The RADIUS Termination-Action attribute is set to RADIUS-Request. The problem is not present if "authentication periodic" is disabled.
Did anyone experience a simmilar problem? Any advice?
    Thanks.

  • AP 802.1X switched port-authentication

    Hi,
I've setup EAP authentication (PEAP) to authenticate WLAN client on an AP.
The AP is connected to a switch where the port is not configured for 802.1X.
On this switched port I enabled, in multi-host, 802.1X to authenticate also the AP as a client, but since it's enabled I've not been able to authenticate anymore the WLAN client due to the fact that the port will not transition to Authorized
If I connect on the same port a PC using 802.1X,this is working fine..
Am I missing something to configure on the switch or AP ???
    Any suggestion are appreciated
    Regards
    Omar

    Omar,
    There's a gotcha with this...most likely a trunk issue...
Here is a snippet for EAPOL guidelines:
    Authentication Configuration Guidelines
This section provides the guidelines for configuring 802.1x authentication on the switch:
802.1x will work with other protocols, but we recommend that you use RADIUS with a remotely located authentication server.
802.1x is supported only on Ethernet ports.
Software release 7.5(1) supports two in-band management interfaces, sc0 and sc1.
802.1x authentication always uses the sc0 interface as the identifier for the authenticator when communicating with the RADIUS server.
802.1x authentication is not supported with the sc1 interface.
You cannot enable 802.1x on a trunk port until you turn off the trunking feature on that port.
You cannot enable trunking on an 802.1x port.
You cannot enable 802.1x on a dynamic port until you turn off the DVLAN feature on that port.
You cannot enable DVLAN on an 802.1x port.
You cannot enable 802.1x on a channeling port until you turn off the channeling feature on that port. You cannot enable channeling on an 802.1x port.
You cannot enable 802.1x on a switched port analyzer (SPAN) destination port. You cannot configure SPAN destination on an 802.1x port. However, you can configure an 802.1x port as a SPAN source port.
You cannot set the auxiliary VLAN to dot1p or untagged and the auxiliary VLAN should not be equal to the native VLAN on the 802.1x-enabled port.
You cannot enable the multiple-authentication option on an 802.1x-enabled auxiliary VLAN port. Enabling the multiple-host option on an 802.1x-enabled auxiliary VLAN is not recommended.
Do not assign a guest VLAN equal to an auxiliary VLAN because an 802.1x-enabled auxiliary VLAN port will not be put into the guest VLAN if the auxiliary VLAN on the port is the same as the guest VLAN.

  • 2960X 15.0(2)EX5 Stack Bug? Master Switch Ports link in Orange, no spanning Tree

Is anyone aware of a bug in version 15.0(2)EX5 for 2960X Switches that would cause a switch in the master role to stop linking in new ports in green (and passing traffic).  I have 2 2960X-48FPD-L Switches in a stack and whichever switch I designate master will only link new connections in orange and not pass traffic.  All ports linked in show up/up and can be seen in a show cdp neighbor but won't pass any other traffic.
If I unplug the Stacking cables both switches become masters and ports linked in green on the previous member switch stay green, but after it switches to master any new connections plugged in only link in orange.
If I switch priorities and reboot the problem switches to the new master switch and the problem goes away on the member switch.
Also, a switch in the master role does not show any spanning tree instances for ports in the orange link state.
Has anyone seen this issue and do you know of a solution?
    Jim

A quick update for those with this same problem.
    1.  15.2(3)E turned out to be very unstable causing my switch stack to randomly lockup/reboot one of the switches about once a week.
    2.  I downgraded back to 15.0(2)EX5 but found a workaround.  It turns out the switch stack with the 15.0 versions does not like the switchport voice vlan command on any of the interfaces on the master switch.  I simply removed the voice vlan configuration on the interfaces and all the switch ports linked in just fine.  I would prefer to run the phones on a voice vlan, but it still works without, just the PC's and phones are on the same vlan.

  • Prevent hub on a 802.1x switch port

    Hi,
A 802.1x port on a switch will grant a hub access if there is a 802.1x PC connected to the hub.
Non-802.1x pc's can access the 802.1x network if they connect to the hub and spoof the mac-address of the 802.1x PC (switch port uses single-host mode).
Does anyone know how we can prevent this access ?
    Thanks,
    Gerard van Bon

Very true. I must have been in wonderland when I half way thought that one through.
I am not sure that dynamic ARP inspection would be helpful in this situation or not. If the ARP tables are built within the switch based upon DHCP snooping, the second host with the same MAC address would have to have a statically entered IP address in order to function. If it tried to obtain one via DHCP, the DHCP server would see that it had issued a specific IP address to that MAC address and would reissue the same IP address to the second host. I guess the second PC could do a NACK to the DHCPOFFER. In this case you could watch you DHCP address allocation for the particular subnet and if you have more addresses issued that you have ports, that could be an indication. Of course there are a few issues with that. Mainly, it would require a fairly static environment to do something like that.
Another problem, and this would be much easier to do from a PC standpoint, would be to setup the 802.1x authenticated PC as a NAT device and connect the second or more devices behind it. (Windows makes this pretty easy now.) If a SOHO router (ie, Linksys type device) were to support 802.1x, it could be plugged in and all devices placed behind it would be able to access the network based upon the NAT functions of the SOHO router. A user smart enough to spoof a MAC address to bypass network security will likely be aware of these methods as well.

  • LMS3.2/UT: Bad entries in Switch port report Reclaim UP

    Hi,
Customer has bad entries when he works with Switch port report Reclaim UP:
if it takes older than 5 days, he has many records, most of them (about 15500 !!!) are from 2010/11/8, some from 2010/11/9 (about 60) and some from 2010/11/10 (about 300)
If it takes older than 30 days, reports is empty.
Inventory jobs is schedule each day at 6:00 am.
    UT keeps history 90 days.
We can see records from port which have never be connected, but we should not find entries that have never been connected.
on Campus guide I saw that :
    Reclaim Unused Up Ports Report
Campus Manager queries both link and access ports to generate the Unused Up report. It uses ports:
    -That are administratively up
    and
-That were previously connected to an endhost or a device but are unconnected at least a day You can generate reports on ports that have been in Unused Up state for a specified interval of time.
    We have 2 issues:
    - ports which have never been connected.
    - ports which have a bad last seen date
    You will find result command:
ut -cli -switchPortReclaimReport type up days 5 -devices all -export c:\up_5j.txt -u user -p password
    Many thanks for your help,
    Elisabeth

This sounds like a problem with Object Grouping Services where Campus OGS is not able to communicate with CMF OGS.
The shortest solution might be to just restart LMS, wait 15 minutes and then check again.
    If that does not help,
    1) Enable OGS debugging for both Campus and CMF
    NMSROOT = C:\progra~1\CSCOpx or /opt/CSCOpx (unix)
    NMSROOT/MDC/tomcat/webapps/cwhp/WEB-INF/classes/log4j-ogs.properties
    NMSROOT/MDC/tomcat/webapps/campus/WEB-INF/classes/log4j-ogs.properties
Change ALL instances of FATAL, ERROR, WARN, and INFO to DEBUG.
(might want to back these files up first, you will want to change them back when finished)
    2) Restart LMS (wait 5 mins betweens stop/start)
    windows
    > net stop crmdmgtd
    > net start crmdmgtd
    unix
    # /etc/init.d/dmgtd stop
    # /etc/init.d/dmgtd start
    3) Reproduce the problem
    4) Collect Log files in
    C:\progra~1\CSCOpx\log or /var/adm/CSCOpx/log (unix)
    CampusOGSClient.log
    CampusOGSServer.log
    CMFOGSClient.log

  • Device on the switch port does not match the switch port on the device.

I have a HP 2910al-48G switch with bunch of HP 6200 pro connected to it. The devices on the switch under the VLANs tab show up at the correct port (if they do which is question #2) except for one device. For some reason, a different device shows up on the switch. But if i go to the device page, it shows it is connected to the correct port on the device.
e.g., On the switch, port 14 shows PC01 when in fact PC02 should be connected.
If i go to PC02 page, then it correctly says it is connected to port 14.So how can i manually edit the device info on the VLAN page?

Settings | Date and Time  then select Automatic date & time, and Automatic time zone. In this way, the carrier time will populate the phone. If it's still going 1hour off, then I'd call VZW and inquire if they have a tower issue, specially if it happens in one particular place.

  • MSI Gaming 5 USB ports issue

    Hello everyone,
I apologize if I posted this in the wrong section, so as the title says it, sorta of a huge USB ports issue just happened after installing the motherboard / windows / all drivers, even restarted a few times
then tested the processor and video card.
Everything ok to that point, I left the pc opened for 3 hours, shut it down, the next day..I couldn't type the windows password.
Alright restart, that maybe one of those kinks that goes away on it's own I guess..Switched each device in different ports..nothing, tried only one device..still nothing.
Tried only usb2.0 ports then 3.0 port > a a little panic kicked in :D
So, in my bios I was seeing 2 keyboards 2 mice..ok...got a bios update from msi site..latest one..flash ..reboot..still nothing.
Strange part was..they were working just fine in bios and everything prior to windows loading, even after that mouse was showing power ( led was ok )but no functionality.
Safe mode didn't help..the miracle of last known good config saved the day.
BUT after choosing the option..ok it started working....randomly..I was typing the windows pass...and right in the middle ...it stopped again..mouse was working...tried again..stopped at 75% of the password.
Tried again...it worked > Reinstalled every driver.. seems stable for now, though being day 2 of this whole deal.
So if anyone honors me with enough time to read the story and maybe relate I would glady appreciate it.
Guys if anyone had any usb related incidents with any of the Z97Gaming boards please share
If I missed anything, please ask.
    Thank you

    Hello everyone,
Sorry for the delay in all of this and thank you for the input.
Specs are below, and this is something currently in the process of being upgraded.
    I7 4790k / MSI Gaming 5 / Sirtec 500W / 8 gb ram  Corsair Vengeance / AMD sapphire 7970 GHZ / one single HDD 1 GB
The Windows installation went fine on 2 other colleagues from work.
For the moment stable, I removed and reinstalled all USB related drivers.
It was a weird one though..

  • Charging port issues

So I see almost everyone that has the Incredible 2 has had a charging port issue. I love it how one Verizon store told me it was a known issue and another store said it wasn't. It seems like it is well known and Verizon nor HTC wants to own up to it. Everyone that has this issue should not have to pay the $99 out of warranty fee for a refurbish phone. I got to wait a month to get my upgrade. The only way my phone charges is through my laptop usb cord which is weird but not my wall charger. To be honest, I might have to switch to a different brand or maybe even go to a different carrier.

Well, when you see how many people are on here writing the same issue and a Verizon rep replying to trying to take care of it, its going to be a known issue. Even called HTC to see how much to fix through them. The gentleman has had calls in the past and recently about people complaining about the same issue. I know Verizon stores don't fix these issues in the store, but I expect better from a smartphone. All of my phones in the past never had this issue.
Regarding the service, Verizon still has the best in my area.
When you work retail, you should help a customer try to fix there issue by at least mentioning someone who can fix it.
Not just trying to sell another product. That isn't good customer service.

  • SF-302 switch connectivity issue

    Hi Forumers'
i found that cisco small business SF302 PoE managed switch connect with the end device (RFID component) would causing packet drop issue.
how should i isolate the issue and proper troubleshooting? would it cause by the PoE issue, or the 10/100 base etc.
any suggestion are welcome, thank you
    Noel

    Hi Noel,
Interesting series of exchanges, sorry for jumping in Mr Carr.
Alarm bells ring in my mind,  when you say ". Switchport is running o autonego, so the switch prefix it to 10-Full, any ohter mode than this is not working."
Did you manually set a port  speed  to 10-full or does autonegotiation  settle for 10-full?
Can you also check within the RFID device, what it thinks is it's link speed and duplex ?
( if  the switch port or the RFID device have their speeds manually set, then the NIC/switchport autonegotiation process WILL not work.  for autonegotiation to work, both the RFID NIC and the switch port must be set to autonegotiate)
    I am thinking there is a autonegotiation or flow control issue between the RFID device and the switch.  A previous cisco Question and answer section says  (in blue) that ;
Autonegotiation issues can result from nonconforming implementation, hardware incapabilities, or software defects.
Noel, this brings up a point, have you checked if the manufacturer of the   RFID devicefor  the latest NIC driver firmware ?
Please be diligent and check this with the manufacturer of the RFID device, as these issues can be caused by old firmware..
When NICs or vendor switches do not conform exactly to the IEEE specification 802.3u, problems can result.
I think you have flow control to work with , but now I can understand packet loss, if the is a autonegotiation issue then packet loss can result.
Hardware incompatibility and other issues can also exist as a result of vendor-specific advanced features, such as autopolarity or cable integrity, which are not described in IEEE 802.3u for 10/100 Mbps autonegotiation.
    It could be very interesting to see a screen capture like the one below;
    1.  of the Etherlike statistics for the port that is connected to the RFID device .
    2. the error log,  might be very informative to indicate a potential cause of this issue.
But, in the back of my  mind,  seeing 10megFull duplex  as a setting tells me that autonegotiation is having issues, which points me to a NIC firmware issue in the RFID device.
You must be good and try to get a  updated NIC drivers for the  RFID device.
    regards Dave
