2950 fails boot system flash:

Hi all,
I am new to the cisco family, and am presently attending the 3rd semester of Net Academy, so apologies for perceived ignorance. Last night working on Chapter 6 Switch Config, I attempted to boot to a second OS in flash that happens to be of a newer version than the one running on the labs 2950.
the running os was:c2950-3ch2s-mz.120-5.3.wc.1.bin
I change the boot parameters to point to the other file as such...
boot system flash:c2950-[1]6q412-mz.121-19.ea1.bin
Here is the problem, as I have id'd [1] should have been an 'i'. As a consequence the boot process FAILS!!! CAN'T find the file "DUH" schmuck me!!. The process halts with 'switch:'
I have attempted numerous ways to rectify this problem, BUT to no avail.
Dir flash: reveals that both os are still present....
thanks in advance for any hints on how to restore would be most welcomed... and this schmuck can save a little face..
Kevin

Hi jack,
thanks for replying.
You are correct in your assumption. I also has a feeling that IT was the case. As class time was running out, I had I could not follow up an discover the correct syntax.
But this morning, I read through the 2950 'boot command' prompt docs and figured out my mistake-forward slash missing /
I went to school and input this:
boot flash:/c2950-[i]6q4[l]2-mz.121-19.EA1.bin
problem solved!!!!
Another little known mistake, which I discovered form reading another post in this forum, was the mistaken identity of 1 for what is actually a lower case 'L'. See brackets....
The best thing about my screw up, I did not ERASE anything and therefore recoverable..
Thanks again for your concern.
Kevin

    Dear friends,
On the 2960, i have two .bin images and i am pointing to the latest one.
However, the boot system flash: command along with the new image does not appear in the running config but it appears in the

and the other being the issue where IOS can return the prompt before it's done unpacking the files
Ok, now what EXACTLY is the appliance and IOS version?  The only time I know of this bug is the Metro Ethernet (ME) switches and when the current appliance is upgraded FROM an IOS version 15.2(1)S.
But there is a "workaround" which Cisco doesn't want to publish (don't ask me why not):  Use "archive tar /x" and, optionally, delete the old IOS sub-directory.
Personally, I wouldn't recommend anyone using the "copy the BIN file" method unless you know what you are doing or you've put extra measures in place.  The "archive /x tar" and/or "archive download-sw" was developed so that it could be automated and the operator can see the result at the end.  The "copy the BIN file" method doesn't give anyone a result whether or not the file was copied or not or was the file copied completely.
Regularly, I would upgrade our switches (2960/2960S, ME-3800X, 3560E/3560CG, 3750X) fleet using the "archive download-sw" method and I don't use scripts.  I just copy-and-paste the command.  So far, since 2009, I've "lost" only 6 switches when I upgraded the switch to upgrade the wrong file (another IOS bug on it's own) and I had to physically show up and upgrade using ROMmon.  Every time I would upgrade, about 900 switches (some in a stack), it would take me about 4 days.  Even though I work with three guys who's very good at almost any scripting but we've come to a unanimous conclusion NOT to use scripting.
Moving on, if "copy the BIN file" is still a preferred choice, I would like to know how do you go about verifying the file was copied completely?  Whenever I resort to the "copy the BIN file", I ensure the file copied is complete by verifying the MD5 hash value against the MD5 hash value found in the Cisco website.  Trust me, adding this additional "layer" of security saved me doing ROMmon upgrade so many times.

  • Set Boot System Flash Question

I get the following on a module of our 6513 switch:
    #set boot command
    set boot config-register 0x2102
    set boot system flash bootflash:
    set boot system flash bootflash:cat6000-sup720cvk8.8-4-2a.bin
Why is the first one empty? How can I resolve that?

    Hi,
You need to remove the first boot statement from the config for the switch to boot from the image as intended by you.
Here's how you clear the incorrect boot statment.
SW3-6509 (enable) clear boot system flash bootflash:
    Hope that helps!

  • Failed boot with flashing folder, but boots from USB

    Hi,
I was recently running an app from the App Store, when my computer froze. I got the classic spinning beach ball on the app, so went to the dock to ctrl-click the dock application icon to force quit it. This then crashed my dock. After some time I gave up, and force-turned my MacBook Pro (13-inch, Mid 2009) off by pressing and holding the power button.
I turned my mac on again, booted to a gray screen, then 30 seconds later a folder with a question mark in it began flashing on the screen.
    My Mac did not progress further in its boot. So I did all the usual stuff;
I re-installed my RAM and HDD (both of which I have upgraded a little while ago to improve specs) and tried to boot again without success.
I tried to access the recovery partition by holding alt while booting, to no avail, doing so just left me with a grey screen and a mouse pointer displayed. I believe that this may have been the case because I boot from an encrypted hard drive (I have encrypted it using filevault) and I have heard that recovery mode is inaccessible when booting from an encrypted drive.
    I zapped my PRAM. (cmd-alt-P-R)
I tried booting into safe mode. (⇧)
Nothing worked. I then, as a last resort, removed the HD from my MacBook Pro, and swapped it with the non-encrypted drive that I use to back up menial data. I tried booting from the unencrypted drive into recovery mode, and it didn't work.
However this is the interesting bit. I then tried to boot (via USB) from the encrypted (original) HD that I had put in my external enclosure. This works. I logged in (past the encryption) and can now use my computer as normal.
I would therefore think that my Mac has something wrong with the HD bridge, or the HD cable inside my Mac. However, I can now read from and right to the unencrypted HD that I installed in my mac!? Very Wierd!?
If anyone has any ideas about what may be going on, I would be very gratefull, as I can now only boot my Mac via USB, which is a hastle to say the least. I include a screenshot.
    Thanks so much!!
    Mr BlobE

In this case sig the interesting thing is that the computer boots when the Startup Disk is connected via USB. In other words, my laptop will read and write, but not boot from the internal drive. Thanks Linc Davis, I have done just that and should hopefully have a working mac by tomorrow!

As you can see , I have multiples line saying that radio is loading firmware but at the end we have "Failed to flash the interface on failed boot"
Did someone had this issue already ?
    tanks for your answer.

    Sep 23 10:06:12.111 GMT: %DOT11-4-LOADING_RADIO: Interface Dot11Radio0, loading the radio firmware (flash:/c1200-k9w7-mx.123-7.JA3/5101.img)
This is the reason why your 802.11b radio won't come up.  The radio-specific firmware is either missing or corrupted.
Most effective way is to overwrite and unpack the entire TAR file.  So let the AP boot normally.  Don't worry about the radio for the time being.
Make sure you have the TAR file located in the correct folder of your TFTP server.  Use the command "archive download-sw /over /force tftp://<TFTP IP address>/filename.tar".
Once the process is complete the AP will reboot.

  • Boot System Failed

Recently my computer has crashed, Once the laptop reset there was a message saying,
"Boot system has failed - Insert Boot Disk and press any button"
The problem is I do not know were to find a Boot disk to fix the problem, If anyone knows how to help it will be a massive help.
    Thanks

yes. I tried that before any thing. System did not respond. Then I switchedoff the system. Then rebooted holding "option" button. That led the system to internet recovery. After a while recovery process stopped and exclamation mark in a triangle appeared with a caption apple.com/support, 6003F.

  • Security setup operations failed: creating system keys

I have just downgraded my T60 laptop from Vista to windows xp using the lenovo CD's.
Everything seems to be working well, except that each time I boot up the computer, the lenovo security setup software runs.  If I follow the menus all the way through, I get to the following error on the last screen:
"your security settings have been configured however, one or more setup operations failed: creating system keys"
There was also a message that previously briefly flashed during the bootup (on the "bios" screen?) which stated that the system was designed to use fingerprints to protect something or other, but this was not enabled.  However:  I then ran all updates for windows xp and for lenovo drivers etc.  This message has now gone away (and unfortunately I didn't write it down).
I'm guessing the failure to "create system keys" results in the software running each time I boot up.
Another possibility:  I have not yet enabled the symantec security, as I intend to uninstall it and use other virus protection software.  Could this be causing the"failure to create system keys"?
(The fingerprint reader works fine, and reads my fingerprint at the windows logon screen.)
**UPDATE**:  uninstalled symantec security software, and this had no effect.

  • Role Provisioning failed for System(s) : Connector Name . Error Message : malformedRequest

Hi Everyone we are facing following issue in GRC-SAC-SAE 5.3_16.3. So far our CUP was connected to Enterprize portal (7.01) and auto provisioning for group to users worked. However now it is not working with below error.
    Role Provisioning failed for System(s) : <Connector Name>. Error Message :
    malformedRequest
    Failed request now
    Successful request used to provision
    Regards,
    Arpan Paik

    Arpan,
We used to get those "malformed request" errors. We dealt with them by requesting the portal to be re-booted during the weekend maintenance window, making the portal security changes manually, cancelling the CUP request and notifying the requester. It's not a great solution, I know, but it was all we could come up with at the time. Then they upgraded the portal to NW 7.31, which is incompatible with GRC 5.3, and we have to do everything manually, so our situation went from bad to worse. Good luck!
    Cheers,
    Gretchen

  • Boot System Command

When i use command "boot system filename ipaddress" to boot a router from IOS stored on a network PC; do i need to care about how much flash is available on the router??
I have to try this on a router which already has an IOS in flash. The available flash space is 14 Mb and the IOS that I want to test is 19Mb. I do not want to delete the present IOS and want to test 19Mb IOS with boot system flename ipaddress command? Will this work??

    Hi Pankaj,
When you are doing a netboot using" boot system filename ipaddress"" the router will boot from the image specified on the PC and will not use its own flash in that case, You should should have enough DRAM to support that image. If you dont have enough DRAM to load your image then your router might get crash.
Yes, it will work if you have specified the correct boot statement and you are able to rach the PC from where you are booting it.

Here is the output of 'metastat' and 'metadb' from my system (sorry for the long message):

    High level instructions:
Use 'metadb -d' to delete any replicas on the failed disk.
If all the metadevices on the disk have already failed, remove disk.
    Replace disk.
    Partition disk.
Use 'metadb -a' to add replicas to new disk.
Use 'metareplace' (as shown in metastat output) to replace each of the failed metadevices (You don't actually have to list the new storage. It'll try the old name by default).
Everything should be green after that.

  • K9N2 SLI Platinum Fails Boot In Morning

    System:
    # AMD Phenom X4 9550
    # MSI K9N2 SLI Platinum
    # 2x2GB G Skil DDR2-1066 ( Bios DDR2 800/2.1 Volts )
    # GeForce 8500GT
    # 1x Seagate 500GB Sata
    # 1x Maxtor 60GB ATA 133
    # 650W PSU
Having Boot problems: Failed Boot this morning, System Shutdown 10 Hours ( PS AC On , LEDs Lite )
Failed at 2nd Green Light ( memory size check ), Reset and system Booted normal..
Previous: Overnight AC OFF , No Leds, System Failed Boot at 2nd Green LED and kept Recycling.
Several Power sw On/Off, system Posted with Bios Check sum, Booted defaults, System ok.
    Ran OK all day..
Note: system Memory passes Memtst+ at 1066, 6 hours , no fails......
    & Sandra Hardware tests ok
Question, Is Bios powered by PS when Power is off ( Leds are Lighted ) or could Battery be bad,
( I know, I will get another, But I don't think it is the problem )

You should have had early warnings if the battery was running low.
Could have been some kind of power problem during night, of course. If you mean by reset that you restarted the system, that would however suggest the PSU is on the limit.
There isn't much use in overclocking your memory, so I suggest you run it at 800.
And please specify your PSU a little better. Watts mean nothing substantial at all. It says mostly what profit the manufacturer wants.
