2960x stacking confusion

Hi all,
I am getting confused in understanding 2960x stacking
1) What is meant by a ring ? i mean if i connect 2 switches together with a single stack cable, will that be a ring ? or half ring ?
2) How 80 gbps stacking bandwidth is calculated ?

Under the product at Cisco.com there is a paper on stacking:
Cisco Catalyst 2960-S, 2960-X, and 2960-XR Stacking with FlexStack and FlexStack-Plus Technology: Description, Usage, and Best Practices
http://www.cisco.com/en/US/prod/collateral/switches/ps5718/ps12995/white_paper_c11-728327.html
A single FlexStack connection between two 2960 stack members is a full-duplex 10Gbps connection. A single FlexStack-Plus connection between two 2960-X members is full-duplex 20Gbps. Each Cisco Catalyst 2960-S and 2960-X and 2960-XR member supports two FlexStack connections, which doubles the line rate. Each FlexStack member can simultaneously send and receive Ethernet traffic over both stack links at line rate, effectively giving 40Gbps of stack bandwidth per 2960-X member and 20Gbs of stack bandwidth per 2960-S member. When two or more 2960-X members are stacked together, the effective stack bandwidth is 80Gpbs because each member is capable of sending and receiving 40Gbps simultaneously. Same for 2960-S, the effective stack bandwidth is 40Gbps because multiple members are sending and receiving 20Gbps simultaneously. (See Table 1.)
Table 1. Comparison of FlexStack-Plus, FlexStack and StackWise-480

So because each cable can send 20 Gbps in each direction that is 20*2*2 = 80 Gbps in total. Marketing speak, I know
FlexStack Cabling
Special cables are used to connect Cisco Catalyst 2960 Series Switches together in a stack. These special FlexStack cables can only be used to stack Cisco Catalyst 2960 switches with other Cisco Catalyst 2960 switches that support FlexStack. Figure 4 shows a picture of two FlexStack cables connected to a fully inserted FlexStack module. Notice how the tabs on the cables are on opposite sides of each other. The FlexStack cables are keyed as well. Besides the tabs needing to be away from each other, the keying of the metal portion of the connector prevents the cable from being connected incorrectly.
Figure 4. FlexStack Module with Cables
When each member in the stack has two operational FlexStack links, then the stack is operating in a fully redundant mode. The dual FlexStack connections from each member to two other members are what provide the redundancy. Should any single FlexStack connection break or cease to operate, then the switches in the stack will use the remaining FlexStack connection that is provided.
Deployment Topologies
Figure 5 shows a three-member stack with full bandwidth and with redundant FlexStack connections.
Figure 5. Fully Redundant Three-Member Stack
When one FlexStack link is not present, the stack still functions. Figure 6 shows a stack with incomplete FlexStack cabling. In Figure 6, all data traffic passes through the middle member. This stack is operating in a nonredundant mode. This stack provides only half of the possible bandwidth between members and does not have redundant connections. Only the middle member has full stack bandwidth. The top and bottom members are operating at half the fully redundant stack bandwidth. The fully redundant stack bandwidth for 2960-X and 2960-XR is 40Gbps per member. The fully redundant stack bandwidth for 2960-S is 20Gbps per member.
Figure 6. Nonredundant Three-Member Stack
As you can see in the picture above there can only be 20 Gbps per direction sent because there is one cable missing to complete the ring. The middle switch is also a single point of failure.

  • ARP issues with 3750X & 2960X Stack

Unable to consistently ping a device from the 3750x that is connected to a vlan on the 2960x stack (po1 between 3750x and 2960x).  ARP statements appear normally in 3750x, where the interface vlan resides.  The device is pingable from through the 3750x, but not from the 3750x, even when specifying the Vlan Interface as the source.
    Thanks for the help.

Connected device, then power cycled, then pinged:
    lrs3750x-admin#ping 172.18.3.17
    Type escape sequence to abort.
Sending 5, 100-byte ICMP Echos to 172.18.3.17, timeout is 2 seconds:
    Success rate is 100 percent (5/5), round-trip min/avg/max = 1/7/34 ms
    lrs3750x-admin#
Then, spiked the interface, because dot1x was lacking logs and not behaving properly:
    lrs3750x-admin#      show arp | in 172.18.3.17
    Internet  172.18.3.17             0   Incomplete      ARPA
    lrs3750x-admin#ping 172.18.3.17
    Type escape sequence to abort.
Sending 5, 100-byte ICMP Echos to 172.18.3.17, timeout is 2 seconds:
Clear arp no longer fixes the issue for the device.
    Thanks!

  • 2960x - stack cables connected while switches power on. SFP ports - status unknown

Connected 2960x uplink using SFP ports both stacks and all 4 ports worked good.
Remote tech connected last stack cable between first and last switch, in 2 different 2960x stacks of switches, while switches were  powered on. A longer stack cable was needed.  3 of 4 SFP ports did stopped communicating.
One stack SFP stayed up in switch 2, not master.  Completed reload - other SPF connected in switch 4/0/52
Second stack no connection on either SFP, remote tech power cycled switches.
After power cycle one SFP worked  in Master 1/0/52, other switches SFP ports show "unknown" when inserting SFP.
Configured port 48 on stack with issue and connected second uplink just fine.
Has anyone experienced this with the SFP's?

    From Cisco.
Developers have recommended to upgrade the IOS version of switches with a Hardware Board revision Number below 0x10 to the release 15.0(2.0).EX5ES. this is the one attached to this email and should be applied to switch 1 and 2.
For switches with a Hardware Board revision Number above 0x10 to the release 152-2.4.E1ES, which I will send you right away. This should be done on switch 3 and 4.
Now, If you  load the engineering special, you will  need to do a full power-cycle (physically unplug the power and plug it back in for every single switch). A simple ‘reload’ will not resolve this.
The same must be done on Switch-0. For this stack you will only need to load the image attached to this email since all the Hardware Board revision Numbers are lower than 0x10.
    done.

  • 2960X stack with 3650G question

    Hello all,
    Please see attached file first.
We have two existing Cisco 3650G with root/secondary bridge for resilience, now we want to add two Cisco 2960X with stack and for two server resilience with LACP, is it possible to do that ?
    Thanks

  • 2960X Stack Fails After reload Command

Did not find anything in Bug Tool or these forums for this so posting as a new question.
Environment is multiple stacks of  2960X -48FPD-L switches in different IDF's running IOS 15.0(2)EX5.   They were installed new and configured by another party about one month ago.  Current configuration is attached to this post.
Switch stack fails to rebuild/sync after CLI reload command via telnet session.  IP stack appears to not initialize so no  network connectivity comes up even though per the onsite staff the master switch system LED's are green and one of the uplinks is connected to that switch..
The system LED's of the other switches are amber.
Remedy for the time being is for someone onsite to power cycle all the switches in 20 second master reelection window.
Have not yet had opportunity to go onsite to console into one of the master switches to reload and monitor the process from that perspetive.
One telltale that makes me wonder about EX5 is the reload command as documented in the 15.0(2)EX Switch Manager command reference here:
    http://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/td/docs/switches/lan/catalyst2960x/software/15-0_2_EX/stack_manager/command_reference/b_stck_152ex_2960-x_cr/b_stck_152ex_2960-x_cr_chapter_01.html#wp3486313748
    should prompt with,
"Proceed to reload the whole Stack? [confirm]"
    but actually only prompts with,
    "Proceed with reload? [confirm]"
as if the command was 'reload slot 1' instead of just 'reload'.
I have not found anything in the config missing/wrong as far as configuration of the stack is concerned other than priorities and ID's were all assigned automatically/default..
If EX5 is the issue I'm not keen on downgrading to EX3 because the uplinks are SFP-10G-LRM which had more issues with EX3 than with EX5.
Thanks in advance for your time.
    Jon

Have you tried cold booting the switch.  I know it is a horrible work around, but I ran circles around this problem on a switch I had upgraded (well- downgraded) from 15.2(3)E that was hitting this bug. Warm boots seemed to do nothing to clear the %ILET-1-AUTHENTICATION_FAIL: This switch may note have been manufactured by Cisco (so on so forth).  Once I pulled the power cable from the switch and waited several seconds prior to reapplying power, the switch came up cleanly.  Currently, Cisco has safe harbored 15.0(2a)EX5.  Did you happen to catch which bootloader combos with 15.0(2a)EX5 seemed to have the most consistent problems with this bug?  The campus I work at is currently in the process of rolling out about 120 of these switches and originally decided to stick with 15.0(2)EX5 until we hit an OIR with SFPs that TAC almost immediately acknowledged as a new development for that specific image. We as a group decided to try out 15.2(3)E and quickly found out that the bug still existed.  By that point, TAC was aware of the problem and over the weekend (2 days time after opening the ticket on a Friday if I remember right), 15.0(2a)EX5 was released.
Here is a small sampling of the switches that we have rolled out and what their bootloader + running IOS is.  Note: There are a few "stable" cases running 15.2(3)E, but they will be rolled back during maintenance windows in the next few weeks.  Everything that has been deployed since 15.0(2a)EX5 has been available has been running without issue on that IOS.   I don't know how useful this data is, but I can continue to build a list, though it looks like every switch that I have that is running 15.0(2)EX5 from the factory that is getting upgraded to 15.0(2a)EX5 has the 15.2(2r)E1 bootloader, with a few cases with the 15.0(2r)EX3 bootloader.
Does anyone have information on when an IOS upgrade will trigger a bootloader upgrade?  One thing I can't put a finger on right now is that during the last few rack/stack/configs of new stacks I have noticed that some of the switches running 15.0(2)EX5 from the factory that are being upgraded to 15.0(2a)EX5 are receiving a bootloader upgrade while the vast majority are not.

  • 2960X stack speed.

I have a 2960X switch that has the stack speed at 10G. I can't for the life of me figure out how to set it back to 20G. Thanks for your help, Joe.

    Hello, kmolino6294.
I assume you already have the FlexStack module on each of your 2960-X switches? You can also check FlexStack-Plus for a higher stack throughput.

  • High CPU utilisation on 2960X stack

    Hello !
i have a lot of switches 2960-X stack in my network, but i downgraded the iOS version (15.0(2)EX4 to 15.0(2)EX3 be cause some bugs are on EX4 with SFP).
Since I downgraded the version, i have a lot of troubles on some switches with a huge amount of CPU utilisation.
One is "normal" and this is the famous one : Hulc LED
but the other one is not "normal" for me :
    this line :
    190   207178513     1061976     195092  0.00% 31.06% 24.83%   0 Auth Manager
i dont know why on some switches the "Auth Manager" CPU utilisation is too high.
When the CPU is too high, we cannot join the switch, the ping is too high (between 500ms and 2100) and users complaining about network spikes.
So, i dont want to upgrade the iOS to the EX5 (too recent, and i dont know if bug with SPF and CPU are fixed).
About the Auth manager, what could raise this process to high for the CPU ?
(i have some check with nagios and snmpwalk but every 5 min and not every minutes, and nagios works well with EX4, issues appear since EX3)
thank for your help and advice

15.2(2)E is the first main-line engineering software for the 2960X.  The "EX" versions you've been using are interim version and not really meant for long-term production network.

  • 2960x Stack of 3

One of the stack members likes to reboot, like 3 times a day. I don't see anything in the logs, or stuff that is sent to our syslog, out of the ordinary explaining why it reboots. Anyone have any suggestions on how to proceed?

We have the same version, but have not seen this issue.
    Couple of suggestions
Open a ticket with TAC and if they don't have a solution replace that switch.

  • 2960s and 2960X stacking

Gents we have used couple of 3750G in past and rule of thumb was that IOS and model should be same inorder to stack them
Is it different for 2960 series swicthes
We have 2 WS-C2960X-48FPS-L and one 2960S swicth can we stack them will it work ??? what about the IOS??? i know the with X its stack-plus (which is faster) but mu question is unlike 3750G will they can be stackable with different IOS???

All the possibilities and restrictions are very good explained in the 2960-X-FAQ:

    Thanks for reply!
I have tried desirable mode as well but no luck. I can work on this only during the weekend as downtime is not an option.
These two 10G links were just installed last weekend and one patch cable I had to replace due to complete lack of connectivity (small shop so we no fiber testing equipment).
I did not do a lot of troubleshooting last weekend but I will dig in to that this weekend. I was hoping to get some insight from people who work with this on daily basis.
Post from about a year ago got me worried:  https://supportforums.cisco.com/discussion/12072281/4500-x-vss-mec-2960-x-stack

  • Question Re: connecting 2960C switch to 3750 stack, max number of VLANS limit...

Hypothetical question: Let's suppose for example I've got a 3750 switch stack in a data center with over 300 VLANs defined on the 3750 stack, and that stack is also my VTP domain server. I wish to connect a small compact 2960C switch (which has a max limit of 255 VLIDs) as a VTP client to the 3750 stack's VTP domain and have the port at each end of this uplink connection set up to be an 802.1q trunk, but limit the VLIDs trunked to the 2960 to just a small handful (let's say just 3 or 4 vlans) via for example something like "switchport trunk allowed vlan 1,2,11,18" on the uplink port of the 2960C switch. Will the mere fact that there are hundreds of  VLIDs present in the vlan configs on the 3750 stack confuse the little 2960C switch's max 255 vlans limits?  Or will the 2960C with its "Lan Base" software happily show all 300+ vlans present in the parent switch stack in a "show vlan" command but simply only let you activate up to the 255 limit locally on that switch?
Normally I'd just use a 3560C switch with IP Base software for this purpose and not worry about any vlan max limit, but we're having to penny-pinch the project and save a few hundred dollars on this compact switch purchase and I've never used the 2960 family before. The small compact switch will be used to host a non-Cisco, 3rd party wireless LAN controller with several APs that will have a handful of different SSIDS, each on a separate vlan, and will not be located in the data center, but in another building connected by a fiberoptic link that will carry the "trunk".
EDIT: I found an old discussion thread where someone else was faced with a similar scenario, and he discovered that even with using "switchport trunk allowed..." and "switchport trunk pruning..." commands on the interfaces at both ends of the link, that  the 2960 switch would still fall out of VTP client mode into transparent mode, which make you lose the benefit of having centralized management of a VTP domain. Seems the VTP protocol will always publish the full list of vlans from the server and this blows the mind of the small switches which  drop into VTP transparent mode because they cannot handle all that many spanning tree sessions. Looks like the 2960 simply cannot be used in a high-vlan-density network if you wish to preserve central VTP domain management features. Rats.

The house network machine can browse and playback/stream video fine, however at the same time the machine on the wireless shows significant slowdown when browsing the web.
The issue is defiantly on the wireless side, If i plug a machine directly into the switch and assign it a static ip, i do not get slowdown, so this is happening before it reaches the poe switch.
So many factors affect the way to stream data up and down wireless.  Sure, I have seen >40 clients on 802.11a AND 802.11b radio of a single 1140 AP.  But this is not good.  Why?  Because wireless is a very "noisy" environment.  When one talks, everyone else has to stop, listen and waits for their turn.  The > 80 wireless clients connected to the 1140 AP had a detected maximum speed of 11 Mbps and they couldn't get any higher than that.  They couldn't get any lower than 11 Mbps because I've disabled lower data rates.
You said you hard-code the channels to 1, 6 and 11 but what is the co-channel interferrence like in your wireless environment?

  • Show arp issue in 2960X

    Hi All,
Our office network setup is ISP-------ASA---------3750---------2960X (stack by 4)-----------wired users
Recently, I use command "show arp" in 2960X, the output as below,
In arp table, I can't see wired PC mac address, and also I do a test at last,
I filter my PC using my wired PC IP address (10.27.82.72), but no result in output.
I just want to know what reason cause this issue?
What should I to do that can solve this problem?
    Thanks in advance,

Tracing a MAC address is fairly straight forward.
    #show mac-address-table 0017.e048.de41
    It may also be
    #show mac address-table 0017.e048.de41
This will list the Outgoing interface that the switch will use to forward frames destined for that MAC address. It does not automatically mean that interface HAS that MAC because it could be a trunk port.
If the outgoing interface turns out to be a Trunk port, logon to the switch connected to that link and check its MAC table in the same way. Keep going until you reach the interface which has the MAC address you are looking for. It could be a virtual interface on a Switch/Router (SVI or Loopback), a Layer 3 address on a Router (i.e one with an IP address) or a normal host port.
    Hope that helps

  • Uplinks between switch stacks

    Hi
I have a stack of 2 x 3650 at the core and an access layer stack of 4 x 2960X.
I was planning on linking these with 4 x 1GB copper connections. Any thoughts on how this should be cabled?
I was thinking 1gb copper uplink from each of the 2960X stack members split across the stack of 2 x 3650?
The uplinks would be in an etherchannel.
    Or are there other recommendations?
    Thanks in advance.

Jody, laugh - oops - actually I had 3560s in mind - which is why I was wondering about stacking, but you do raise a good point about whether stack cables were used.
For OP, yes you could have a gig link from each switch, two to each 3650.  However, that won't, I believe guarantee you any or much better performance as Etherchannel should distribute the load across the links regardless of physical switch destination.
You'll want to insure, though, you're using the best load balancing algorithm for each direction.
