2G Ipod Touch - iOS 3.1.3 - ITunes 10.1 - Can't upgrade to version iOS4.2.

I hope someone can offer any information about how I can get my Ipod upgraded. When I run Itunes, I get the message that 3.1.3 is already the current version. I have tried reinstalling ITunes, completely resetting my Ipod. I am certain that my device is a 2G device since I got it February 2008. Is there some kind of .ini file that causes Itunes to always search for a particular version? I know others have had similar issues but I have never been able to find a simple explanation about this. Please, any help or assistance will be greatly helpful also, where can I find out whether my device is actually 2G. I don't have Apple Care so the Apple website is useless to me. Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

No, you have to update to iOS 5 via iTunes/USB. One you get iOS you can further update via wifi.

Hi was syncing my ipod touch 4th gen it does not recognise my ipod in itunes and have been restarting the computer and following instructing to try and get it going again but nothing will work. Removing and Reinstalling iTunes, QuickTime, and other software components for Windows XP

Removing and reinstalling iTunes and other software components for Windows Vista, Windows 7, or Windows 8
However, after your remove the Apple software components also remove the iCloud Control Panel via Windows Programs and Features app in the Window Control Panel. Then reinstall all the Apple software components
- Then do the other actions of:

I have two iPads and one iPod Touch and they are using iTunes on the same computer.

Is there a reason this is happening? iPad one is an iPad 1 and the second is an iPad 2 not sure if this has something to do with it. I just tried to upgrade to IOS 5 and when it went to back up it gave me an error code (-5000). I tried to back up using iTunes and it told me that my backup was corrupted and to delete it and try to back up again. When I went into the device portion where I was instructed to go to delete the backup I found that there was no backup for my iPad just the iPad 1.
I have synced many times and all of the apps, podcasts, music, etc... show up in iTunes, and iTunes recognizes that is is the second iPad but there is not a backup for it.
Any Ideas?

If you have iTunes 11 turn on the Sidebar. Go to iTunes>View and click on Show Sidebar. You can also do a Crtl+S to show the sidebar. The sidebar is where Devices appears. and Control+B to show the Menu bar
Next try on another computer to help determine if you have an iPod or computer problem.

No. If your MacBook has an Intel processor you can update to OSX 10.6.8 and then install the latest iTunes.
A 5G iPod with iOS 7 requires that if you have a Mac you have OSX 10.6.8 or later.
