2G Shuffle songs in wrong order

I've been happily using my 2nd Gen iPod for ages and suddenly it won't play songs in the order that they should be. They seem to be in some kind of random order that doesn't make any sense. Flipping the random or sequential switch doesn't change anything. Removing the iTunes Library and Library.xml or resetting the iPod or pressing play 3 times don't fix anything.
My sister's iPod did this a while back and she eventually bought another one. Very grateful for any help you can offer.
Gordon

After some testing, I think the problem is tied to when "Replace all item when Autofilling" is checked under the Autofill settings. iTunes is not correctly creating the contents database file, so it's confused as to which song is which.
I discovered, however, when you reconnect the shuffle after playing a song (which udates the Playcount and Last Played info), the database repairs itself and the songs play in the correct order.
If I uncheck "Replace all item when Autofilling", manually delete the shuffle's contents, then Autofill, everything is again fine.
It works for me...try it. It's a half-a**ed solution, but it will do until Apple fixes this bug.

  • Songs in Wrong Order for iTunes 7

I have my music sorted by album, and when I upgraded to the new version of iTunes, about ten or so albums are randomly in the wrong order. I have the track numbers listed next to each song, and they are correct, but for some reason they are ordered, for example, 3, 4, 5, 2, 7, 1, 6. When I sort by artist, they are in the correct album order again. I don't want these albums to be in the correct order only if I sort by artist or if they are in a playlist, I want to keep sorting by album. Also, going to Get Info doesn't help since the correct track numbers are listed, but they are still incorrectly ordered. Can anyone help?

    Hi Missara!
Everytime I got an album sorting issue like yours, it had something to do with the information tag. In the new iTunes version, the album grouping have been modified.
Select a whole album and do a get info on the songs. There you have to make sure that ALL album related fields are identical; i.e. Artist (if not, write an artist name in the Album Artist field), Album, Year, Disc Numbre from and Of, Track Number of.
For all these fields, click the check box next to them if the field is blank. Sometimes if can even be a white space messing up.
    This should correct your situation.

  • ITunes 8.2 displaying songs in wrong order

    Hi there
Recently had Windows die on me, so I had to do a clean install of Windows Vista. I was not able to access any settings/libraries etc before the computer died.
Fortunately I had just copied my MP3s onto an external drive a few days earlier. Have updated to SP2, all fixes applied etc. I've imported all the songs back into a new install of iTunes.
I used to sort my songs via Album by Artist but when I do this now I find my compilations or those with "various artists" in the album by artist field will not display in the correct track order ie might go track 6, 3, 11, 1, 5, 7 etc .
The songs are grouped together as an album, but not in the correct order. The track names aren't listed in alphabetical order - the order seems random for all the affected albums.
I have tried editing the info and checked disc numbers, track numbers (including re-entering each number and making sure the total number of tracks is correct) , album names, genres etc. Group by compilation has been checked. Have tried part of compilation yes and no. Have made sure each field is exactly the same. No joy.
If I sort by album the tracks display in the correct order but I want to sort Album By Artist - it's easier to browse through the library by artist rather than albums.
Anyone got any suggestions? I would rather not have to change the Artist field for compilation albums to the same artist name just to get the tracks in the correct order.
I have about 9000 songs and all of them were either imported from original CD albums or purchased from iTunes - no torrent music etc.
    Thanks for your help

See my previous post on Grouping Tracks Into Albums, in particular the topics Use an album friendly view and Tracks out of sequence. (N.b. You can ignore the bit about Artist & Sort Artist being consistent for a compilation, but every track must have Part of a Compilation set to Yes).

  • I have just put an audio book into my iTunes music library.  When I tried to transfer it to my iPod shuffle it rearranged the tracks so that they are in the wrong order.  How can I put them in the order they appear in the book?

I have just put an audio book into my iTunes music library.  When I tried to transfer it to my iPod Shuffle it put the chapters in the wrong order i.e. Chap 1, Chap 10, Chap 11 etc. rather than Chap 1, Chap 2, Chap 3 ...  How can I get it to put them in the order they appear in the book?

First, we need to know if the audiobook chapters are being treated by iTunes as music files or as audiobooks. If they are not audiobooks purchased from the iTunes store, they might be getting "shuffled". You will need to look at "File" - "Properties" (I think - I don't use iTunes under Windows - or right-click on the file and choose "properties") and look at the media type. If it is "Music", change it to "Audiobook". If this is not the problem, or does not fix anything, please post back.
Actually, looking at your post again, a second thought occurs to me - assuming there are less than 100 chapters in the book, just renaming them with a leading zero on the first nine chapters might do it. A computer will alphabetically sort filenames in the order you quote (1, 10, 11, 12, 13, ... 2, 21, etc.) but a leading zero will fix that (01, 02, 03 ... 10, 11, 12)

  • I can't get my playlist on my iPod Touch to shuffle while I'm running using the Nike .  The playlist keeps defaulting to play songs in alphabetical order.

I use my iPod Touch with Nike+ while running.  I have setup my workouts into my iPod but when I can't get my playlists to stay on "shuffle".  The playlists only play in alphabetical order.  Is there a way to make sure the songs play on shuffle and not in alphabetical order?

similar problem with my 6th generation ipod nano. if i select a playlist within the nike+ workout function it only ever plays the songs in alphabetical order of artists.
the shuffle works fine if i'm playing the playlist outside of the nike+ environment
never had these problems with my 2nd generation or 4th generation nanos

  • HT4322 4th generation ipod shuffle how do you add your playlist with the songs in the order you want

I have a playlist with songs in the order I wish to hear them if I don't wish to have them shuffled.  I've been unable to add my playlist to my new ipod shuffle (it's absolutely no problem with my 2nd generation ipod shuffle) in the order I wish the songs to play. It's been putting the songs in by the artist name.  How do I have it add the songs in the order I have them listed on my playlist?

    Here's what I'm doing:
When I connect the ipod to the computer, I click on  Devices showing my ipod.
A window opens, and I click on Music.
Sync Music is checked, and I've checked the playlist I want.
I then click on the Sync button at the lower right side of the Music menu.
A display on the menu bar shows "Syncing Music to My ipod," and indicates it is copying 1 of 146 (the number of items on my playlist), and the name of the song.
The songs are all on my playlist, but it is listing them by Genre (I just figured that out), and this is the order in which they are on the ipod.
I guess my question at this point is how/where/what do I select to have the songs synced in the order I have them on my playlist.
    I appreciate your input.

  • Songs in the wrong order...what ID3 version is needed for a mic

I have a zen micro and for some reason it won't read the track number for ANY of my songs so it just organizes them alphabetically...this is really annoying. Is there a specific ID3 tag version they should be in? Right now I believe they are all .0. Thanks

And by "the rest of you" you just mean you right? Because I'm fairly sure you cannot speak for the rest of the creative zen owners
Besides why WOULDN'T they make it so it plays the songs in the order they are supposed to be? If you want to listen to them in a different order isn't that what the random feature is for?
Or what about those cd's that are MEANT to be played in a certain order? As in each song leads into the next...
If people just download a few songs from the internet then how would this even affect them? They would have to combine them into a playlist anyway and therefor the track number wouldn't even matter!
The point is, it was dumb not to include it because it's easier for the people who won't use it to get around it then for people who do use it! If you don't want to hear them in the exact order they were meant to be heard in then hit the random feature (duh) but for me to go through my entire music collection and edit all the ID3 tags would take hours and is extremely inconvenient for me...

  • Shuffle song order lost after charging battery

I set iTunes to not launch everytime the iPod is connected to the computer. I thought by doing this I could connect the iPod to the USB to charge it but not update it. And I thought the Shuffle Song option would be retained, so I wouldn't have to start over.
This doesn't seem to be the case. Is there any other option to try to keep the Shuffle Song option intact other than buying an AC adapter?

"I thought by doing this I could connect the iPod to the USB to charge it but not update it. And I thought the Shuffle Song option would be retained, so I wouldn't have to start over."
Once you connect an iPod to a computer it will show the "do not disconnect" screen. When you eject it, it reverts to the main menu and anything previously used (like the shuffle function) is lost. Having iTunes closed has no effect.
"Is there any other option to try to keep the Shuffle Song option intact other than buying an AC adapter?"
Whilst charging the battery? None that I know of.

  • How do i stop my iPhone iTunes from Shuffling songs?

I cannot figure out how to stop my iPhone Music/iTunes from shuffling songs but instead to play them in order.

In the Music app, tap the screen to bring up an extra menu bar showing the current song's timeline.  In the lower right is a pair of crossed arrows -- when enabled (blue), shuffle is on, tap it to turn shuffle off (gray).
Edited to add: That's when you've got the album cover image up, if you're on the track listing, tap the upper-right corner to bring it back to cover art view.  The other two indicators/buttons on the bottom of the same bar are "repeat" (bottom left) to repeat the current track or playlist (two options), and "genius" (bottom center) to generate playlists of songs similar to the one currently playing.

  • Songs arent in order on Ipod

Hi all just a quick one i hope someone will be able sort out for me. Some albums i recently put on my ipod dont play in order. they are in order on itunes an even in order on my ipod when looked at on itunes but not when i disconnect an play! ive tried everything, going on get info and changing tabs an track listings etc but still to no avail. Any help would be much appreciated.
    Many thanks, Kev

mhm ... are the songs shown in order if you look at them on the iPod display (not the iPod in iTunes). if not, it's most likely because you havn't entered any "track number" information. without those, the iPod naturally can't sort your songs.
but since you say iTunes DOES sort them correctly, and iTunes shouldn't be able to do so if there are no track number infos, I guess you entered them correctly.
only other thing I could think of is that you accidentelly have shuffle turned on? press the center button a couple of times when you are playing a song. you will get to the "shuffle"-option at the bottom of the screen, if it is turned to "songs" or "albums" then that is your problem. turn it to "off" and the problem is solved.
if shuffle IS off ... uhm ... I don't know. If your songs are tagged correct and shuffle is off your iPod SHOULD play them in the right order ...

  • Shuffling songs on a single Album

When I set Settings | Shuffle to "Songs", my iPod Classic does indeed shuffle all the songs for an Artist or Genre. But when I select a specific Album, it always plays all the songs on the album sequentially -- always beginning with the first song.
Tech support and user forums indicate that Shuffle "should" also work for a specific Album, but it fails to do so on every Album I've tried. Again, it does work for Artist, Genre, etc. -- but NOT for a single Album.
Help...? Any suggestions or info would be greatly appreciated!

  • My IPod no longer shuffles songs within playlists that are clearly set to shuffle.  It is about 3/4 full so I thought of maybe compressing the files to get more space.  Do you think that is the problem and if that might help?

My IPod no longer shuffles songs within playlists that are clearly set to shuffle.  It is about 3/4 full so I thought of maybe compressing the files to get more space.  Do you think that is the problem and if that might help?

Storage space on the iPod would not affect shuffled playlists or playlist shuffling, though substantially full iPods may wind up skipping songs on larger playlists after a while, and require a restart.  As for compressing the files themselves, you can automatically re-encode files to a lower bitrate by checking the box on the summary page when your iPod is connected to your PC/Mac.
As for the shuffle problem, after restarting your iPod (hold the center button and Menu for a few seconds, until the Apple logo appears), make sure you're telling the iPod to shuffle the songs in a playlist by repeatedly clicking the center button until the Suffle Menu comes up, then scroll to the right to turn it on.  From that song forward, the playlists' contents should be shuffled every time the playlist ends, or is accessed from a new song.
Shuffle does sometimes turn itself off, I've found, so double-check the setting is still on.  Also, iPods shuffle by randomly assigning a playlist order for your songs, which is different from traditional shuffle (on, say, iTunes or Windows Media Player, where the new song is determined at random upon the current track ending.  The iPod only chooses a random order of songs when you shuffle, to conserve battery life and queue up songs coming up on the playlist in the event of a shock).

  • How can you shuffle songs in a playlist in itunes 11?

You used to be able to create a playlist, shuffle it, then synch it to your ipod.  This was done easily with a shuffle button in the library.  In 11 that button is no longer there.  How can you do this now?

Your question is clear, but you then go on to say something completely different. I've answered your question "how can (you) shuffle songs in a Playlist in iTunes 11".
In Playlists, click on the "start playing in shuffle mode" icon (that I've ringed). And...
In this next shot (the space you need to watch), you can see the Shuffle icon (ringed in larey lime) is blue, so it's "on", and I've also clicked on the "show me what's coming up next" icon (ringed in red).  Study the list of upcoming songs. It's the Playlist we're in, but shuffled:
    Hey presto!
Now - if you actually mean something else, such as: "create the Playlist, adjust the order of the songs and then Sync it to the iPod"; then as before, you can drag songs within a Playlist to whatever order you want and Sync the Playlist - as before. I've no idea what the "button" you refer to, looked like. Can you explain?

  • Compilations in wrong order on iPod

Has anyone had an issue with making their own compilations?
This only seems to happen if I create my own compilation (not playlist) from a selection of songs - despite everything looking fine in iTunes the songs are in the wrong order on the iPod.
I'm setting the album artist to "Various Artists" and the track numbers aren't duplicated, but this issue still happens on each of my 'homemade' compilations.

The thing to check would be to look on your iTunes at home on your desktop and check that the songs are ordered correctly there. One thing with renaming double cd sets (as I also do) is that sometimes the track numbers get jumbled.
If you select the offending album in iTunes, click on the header bar where it says 'name' (above the song titles), you'll see that part of the bar turn blue and iTunes will jumble the tracks into a random order.
Click on track# to reorder them 1,2,3 etc. Sync these changes back to the iPod.
Incidentally, there can be problems associated with iPods and network drives. See this.
    Strange iPod behavior.

  • Each of my playlists on ITunes has songs in a particular order. I can move them around as I wish. 1 playlist has all songs in alphabetical order

I have several playlists. I can place songs on any of the playlists and move them up or down so they are in a set order. I was trying to move one particluar playlist to my IPod Shuffle. In the process of doing so, the songs on this playlist converted to alphabetical order. I can't move them back to the order I had them and I'm frustrated. How do I reestablish control of this particular playlist so I can move the songs back into the order I had them? I can still move any song on my other playlostys, but not this one for some reason. Thank you for your help.

I found the answer ... You have to go to the upper most left column (above the numbers) and click to place an arrow there. That was the only playlist I didn't have an arrow showing. Once I did this, I could once again move the songs in the order I wanted.
    Yes!!! :^)
