2G Shuffle sync corrupted iTunes music folder

I purchased the 2G Shuffle today, took it home plugged it in and iTunes didn't recognize it. I realized I hadn't updated to iTunes 7.0.2 (had the previous v7), so I updated iTunes to 7.0.2. When I re-opened iTunes, I got an exclamation mark next to most of my songs and a Windows message:
"The file or directory F:\iTunes is corrupt and unreadable. Please run Chkdsk utility."
I have my iTunes folder on an external hard drive (F:), and when I check the folders on the drive for artists/songs, they are all gone!
Please help!!!

You have posted in the iTunes for Mac forums.

  • Is  there a way to sync my itunes music folder with my itunes library?

Hey, I have itunes set to add music that I drag and drop into it a folder and its been set like this for a long time.  Then I would do whatever edits to the albums info if needed.  But now I realized that my folders don't snyc with the itunes libary.
I was wondering if there was a way update the folder the way I have my music in itunes.

If the files are stored inside the iTunes media folder, and the option under Edit > Preferences > Advanced to Keep iTunes Media folder organized is enabled then files and folders should be renamed to reflect changes you make to the tags.

  • Two user accounts one Itunes Music Folder, How do I keep the Libraries sync

Okay let's see if I can explain my dilemma properly. My girlfriend shares my computer with me, so I gave her a seperate account to keep her stuff in. However I keep all our music on an external hard drive in the iTunes music folder. The problem is everytime I upload new music or delete something on my account/ iTunes library, It doesn't update the iTunes library on her account. Therefore I have to sign in to her account to update her library with new music or delete tracks that have been removed from the Music folder. Kinda a minor thing until you upload 5 new CD's and remove like a 100 old tracks/podcasts, then it gets to be very annoying and time consuming. So is there anything I can do to sync our libraries to the music folder when changes are made? Hope I explained that well, and thanks for your help in advance!

As both libraries are the same you're wasting disk space, so have only one library - yours and enable sharing on it.
You need to be looged in and iTunes running, she will enable 'look for shared libraries' in her Preferences... and your library will show up.

  • I just dled Itunes onto my new laptop, when I synced with my music folder, all of the songs were duplicate on song list, what do I do?

I just dled Itunes onto my new laptop, when I synced with my music folder, all of the songs were duplicate on song list, what do I do? What did I do wrong, and where do I find a manual to learn how to use ITunes???

" When I did this, my library showed all the music I have "purchased" from itunes but did not have the music that I downloaded a long time ago through itunes from my old CDs."
    Correct.
" How can I get that music to show up in my library now on my new computer?  "
Copy it from your old computer or your backup copy of your old computer.
The sync is one way - computer to ipod.

  • Sync iPod with iTunes - reduce network bandwidth for iTunes music folder

I'm using a network drive for my iTunes music folder. Average bandwidth is 50Mbps, compared to, say, an external USB HDD with hi-speed USB bandwidth of 750Mbps.
For some reason iTunes needs to consult the files in the iTunes music folder when syncing an iPod. That is, it needs to access the music files even when there is no change and no files actually need copying from the music folder to the iPod.
Because iTunes is reading my music files, it's really slowing down a sync.
How do I get iTunes only to look at my music folder when there's a file to copy. Reading each file just for a sync is consuming resources and I can't see that it's necessary - iTunes knows what is in my music folder as it has the library xml file stored locally on the PC hosting iTunes.
Anyone have any advice here ?
    Thanks.
PS have posted this Q twice before with no replies. Hopefully yet another paraphrase to make the question more relevant with get some help from a kind soul out there.
    Here's a link to my previous post(s): http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=802961

On my Mac, if the external drive with iTunes library is not connected, it will error out and ask if I want to keep looking for the files.
I'm using a network drive for my iTunes music folder. Average bandwidth is 50Mbps
Why so slow? Is it wireless? What kind of connection is it?
iTunes also wants to know if there is a file to delete or if there is a file that has changed.
an external USB HDD with hi-speed USB bandwidth of 750Mbps
USB 2.0 theoretical max speed is 480Mbit/s. Realistic max speed is ~60% of that.
iTunes knows what is in my music folder as it has the library xml file stored locally on the PC hosting iTunes.
iTunes does not use the library.xml file. It is simply created for other applications to access iTUnes library.

  • Apps don't sync to my iTunes music folder on another HDD, always generates a new My Music folder in My Documents on my boot drive... is there a way to fix this?

Pretty much what i wrote in the title, my boot drive is an SSD so there isn't heaps of free space to play with which i why i want to move my app folder to my itunes music folder on my other drive. I have already changed the setting in itunes so that the HDD folder is my primary media folder. It's just the app folder which is giving me a headache...

  • Sharing iTunes Music folder on external HD but not Mobile Applications folder?

I share the iTunes Music folder on an external HD between two separate Mac user accounts. Each user has their own iPhone and syncs within their own user account. All the media for user#1 (books, apps, etc) are in the appropriate folders in this shared iTunes Music folder, which means user #2 is seeing all user #1's stuff in their iPhone sync windows in iTunes.
I don't want to share anything but the actual iTunes library music files between the two Mac user accounts (and the two iPhones). Everything else for each user (apps, books etc.) I want to keep separate. Both users have a separate iTunes store account. Is this possible?

It seems that removing the apps of user#1 from user#2's library (i.e. deleting them in iTunes window, not trashing the actual file) does the trick ... this change updates the user's library .xtml file. Now user#2's apps are syncing only on their phone when they log in and use iTunes. When user#1 logs in iTunes just shows user#1 apps and syncs those.

  • Itunes cannot see the itunes music folder on my external hard drive

I recently put all of my music on an external hard drive to free up space on my computer,
However, when I am in itunes and trying to point the library to the music folder, itunes still cannot see it. Instead all it can see is the E drive WD Passport, and folders named autorun, WD Sync Data Wd Windows Tools.
Can anyone tell me how I can see my itunes music folder on my external hard drive while I am in preferences, advanced, library location, change??

I don't know enough about iTunes for Windows to help you with this. But if you post your question in the Using iTunes for Windows forum you will get help from people who know more about this.

  • Songs in Itunes Music Folder Won't Play

My Itunes will frequently not play songs that are clearly in the Itunes music folder and can be found. When trying to drag the song into itunes to play it will not play either. Windows Media Player and Winamp will play the songs. Basically I don't understand why it won't play the songs that are in it's folder.

Usually, it is corrupted MP3 tag headers.

  • ITunes, music folder and iPhone

After having tried almost everything, I post a topic about a very frustrating issue: iPhone's Other files.
I have over a GB of other files and the size is increasing every time I sync the phone, especially if I added new music.
I followed http://www.ipodrepublic.com/iphone/fixing-issue-other-files-iphone-memory/2010/0 3/31/ but it didn't helped. When I sync again my music, the problem is the same as before. Restoring or resetting didn't helped so far.
I think there's something wrong with my computer in the iTunes music folder. Can anybody help me with that?
If there is a solution for this problem, please let me know!
I didn't restored and configured the iPhone as new because I'd like to see if there are less invasive methods first.
    Thank you very much

Go to iTunes plug your iPhone then go to apps tab and scroll down under the apps box. Here are some of the apps that contains data. You can't see data of a game or some others apps here.
If you are running iOS 5 you can check one by one your apps in Settings>General>Usage. These sizes are the apps sizes(except Music and Photos & Camera) but if you tap on them you can see the "documents and data" size.

  • Missing files after moving itunes music folder

i moved my itunes music folder to my external hard drive using the directions posted here: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=301748 to the letter. a lot of things transfered but now when i look in my itunes music folder and compare to my itunes library, i see that a lot of things are missing. i really don't want to have to go through every single artist folder and check every song. shouldn't consolidating my library have taken care of this?

I just had a very similar issue, I moved my iTunes library from a 120Gb Drive to a 500Gb and the library was a bit corrupted because the main drive was full b/c of an error, but that's besides the fact.
SOLUTION To missing files, that aren't really missing because they exist and were all copied no problems.
go to the iTunes folder in your Home folder, and move the iTunes Music Library.xml file to your desktop (with itunes closed of course)
Then re-open itunes and the library file that's not an xml doc, will re-search your files and all should be well.
You should be able to safely delete the xml doc now, because iTunes made a new one.

  • Rebuild iTunes with Just VERY LARGE iTunes Music Folder

    Hello,
As much as I tried to back every bit of my iTunes database up regularly, I failed to assure the quality of these files. Well, I had a family member accidentally delete the iTunes Library and iTunes Library.xml files (yup, my mistake to allow them access to my Mac in the first place). It is only now that I realize the most recent backup copy of these files are corrupted. The really good news here is that I have multiple intact copies of my entire iTunes Music Folder. My goal is to recreate my iTunes Library and iTunes Library.xml files to accommodate it.
Now, here is the kicker. My database is 38000 songs and 190 GB large! I certainly know how to add songs iTunes, but it seems as though it chokes with large projects like this and misses random parts of the tag information. So, what is the best way to get me out of this hole, with the least amount of trouble and most efficient restorative actions? While I wait for an answer, I am also researching various other options and digging deep into the root to rescue deleted files.
If we learn from our mistakes, then I obtained my PhD years ago,
    Dr. Z.

    Dr. Z,
My iTunes library is about the same size. I am experiencing a little different problem though. At times when I start iTunes up I get a message stating that my library is corrupt and it then tries to restore it from the xml file. It finishes, but doesn't get every song. I then have to select all song and clear them while keeping the files intact on the hard drive. I then have to add my iTunes music folder and all its contents using the iTunes "Add to Library" function. I gets all the songs, but of course now all the dates, when the songs were added to the library, have the current day's date. I have to repeat this whole scenario about three times a week. Grrrrr...
It seems like iTunes isn't capable of handling large amounts of songs. I'm sure it shoud be able to, but it sure isn't at the moment.
As to your problem, what if you try adding your songs a chunck at a time instead of all at once? Maybe that will keep your data intact. Just a thought. Might work. I've seen stranger things work.

  • Moved iTunes music folder to HDD, Now iTunes Can't Find it--Help :-)

I finally was able to get an HDD that actually mounted and now I have moved my iTunes music folder based on the instructions here: iTunes: Moving your iTunes Music folder. I printed them out and followed them step-by-step.
Before moving the folder iTunes Music from my internal HD (~/Music/iTunes/iTunes Music) to the trash, I played random tracks with no problem. So I moved the folder to the trashcan, then emptied the trash as instructed. Went back to iTunes to play some music, and now all of my tracks have the dreaded exclamation point in the first column. When I click on a track to play it, I get the message "The song 'blah blah blah' could not be used because the original file could not be found. Would you like to locate it?"
Of course, I can select 'Yes' and go through the steps and locate the files on my HDD. This, however, is not an optimal process with over 2400 songs. Does anyone know what went wrong with my relocation?

I've used that method to transfer music from one drive to another literally dozens of times and never seen it fail in the way you experienced. I'm at a loss to explain how you could have followed the instructions, successfully transfer the music to the new drive, and yet have the iTunes database still think the music should be on the original drive.
What I can suggest are two solutions: One for it you don't care about keeping your playlists, rankings, and playcounts intact. The other for if you do care.
Fast fix but loses the meta data: Quit iTunes. Open your home directory, find the music folder and open it. Trash everything you see in your music folder and restart iTunes. All your music and playlists will be gone. Open your new drive on the desktop, find the folder with your music, and drag it into your iTunes window. Your music will be imported into a new iTunes catalog and then you can create your playlists.
Keeping the metadata: After quitting iTunes, move the music back to its original location by dragging the music folder(s). Unmount the new drive and play some music. Remember the songs you clicked on and showed iTunes how to find? Do those songs all over again and once you've verified the iTunes library now points to all the songs properly, delete the songs from the new drive and repeat the steps to move them again.

  • ITunes Music Folder organization

Hey. I have all my albums stored in a My Music folder, some are labelled fully (Artist - Album) as the folder name, while others are simply the artist, the album or what have you. As I load new albums onto my computer, I just do a manual "add folder to iTunes" each time. I checked both Keep ITunes Music Folder Organized and Copy Files to iTunes Music Folder when Adding, and it prompts me to copy all the files over. I've tried this a few times, using My Music as the folder, and other locations, but it only ever copies like, ten of my three-hundred odd albums.. I want it to copy ALL my music and organize it accordingly, but it won't.. What gives?

    Hi Jen, welcome to discussions
iTunes always manages the music folder in that way (\[artistname]\[albumname]\[title]).
To keep it from splitting up your albums with several different artist, check "part of a compilation" in the info tab (right-click->get info). Now those albums will appear in one folder (\compilations\[albumname]\[title])
