2GB & 3GB works on my P6N SLI, but 4GB won't???

I had 2GB DDR2 667MHz RAM installed on my MSI P6N SLI mobo and tried upgrading to 4GB with two more sticks that are exactly the same but it just won't work. I tried different combinations for the the memory slots and the RAM sticks and they work fine which voids the possibility that there is something wrong with any of them. I tried it on Vista Ultimate 32-Bit and it would show a CMOS error and continue to show only 3GB (I am aware of the 32-Bit OS memory limitation), so i tried 64-Bit Vista and it won't even boot at all! I tried changing things in the Bios but there isn't even a memory remapping option, and clearing the CMOS and then loading setup default setting completely screwed everything in my PC and caused it to become slow, it kept showing BSODs, my 2nd harddrive kept disappearing, and I had to format both harddrives, and after all that I still couldn't get 4GB to work!! Please help me with this problem.
My PC specs are:
Intel Core 2 Duo E6600 CPU
MSI P6N SLI 650i Mobo
2GB DDR2 RAM at 667MHz
BFG 8800GTS 320MB
2 x 320GB Seagate SATAII Harddrives
Creative X-Fi Xtreme Music Sound Card
Evga NVTV TV Tuner
Windows Vista Ultimate 32-Bit
600W Ultra SLI Power Supply

My advice is to try the following:
1. Start with 2gb of RAM only and install the two hotfixes I already mentioned, turn off you system, unplug main A/C power cable from PSU, put in the additional two modules, clear CMOS after that and try to boot.  See if there is any difference.
2. If the problem persists, use 2GB of RAM and update your BIOS to the latest Version under stable conditions.  Use the Forum Flashing Tool to update your BIOS.  It can be found here:
https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=108079.0
Read the at the end of that thread as well regarding SureHands Live Update:
https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=108079.msg826609#msg826609
3.  After Flashing the BIOS, clear CMOS again and see what happens if you put in 4Gb of RAM.
4. If the problem persists, try to manually set DRAM frequency to 533 MHz for testing and try again.

Problem is that no matter what I do I can't get a multiplier above 7!  I can drop to 6 but no higher than 7!  Is it because the RAM is not fast enough?  I am updated with the latest BIOS and it recognizes the processor just fine.  All the Spread Spectrums are disabled.  EIST Disabled.  F4 no longer works with latest BIOS to disable C1E?  Any help would be appreciated!

It is not possible to increase the CPU Ratio of an E6320, no matter what board or BIOS you use.  Intel has locked the higher multipliers on all processors except Extreme Edition CPUs.  The E6430 is not an Extreme Edition CPU.  No BIOS Setting will ever be able to change that.

  • Created a working Windows To Go flashdrive but it won't accept my paid-for Windows 8 license key

I created a Windows To Go flash drive using 64-bit Windows 8.1. It boots and works perfectly except that I cannot activate it with the license key I got when I paid for Windows 8 last summer (I bought the digital download, ordered the
optional disc, and carefully recorded the license key Microsoft e-mailed me).
I noticed that the "build" of the Windows To Go flash drive states "Windows 8 PRO," not Windows 8 or 8.1. Did I screw up and not install the right version of Windows to the drive? Is Windows To Go only for the PRO version of Windows 8
and not the regular version? I only worked on this as an experiment to see if I could boot Windows 8 on our work PC's (which are sadly still running XP), and I am so close! Where did I go wrong?

Windows 8 PRO is Enterprise Edition? Official Windows to go only with Windows 8/8.1 Enterprise Edition. However, if you have no Enterprise Edition, you can try Aomei Partition Assistant and its new function "windows to go creator"

  • Who has this setup - MSI P6N SLI Platinum & E8400

This message is intended for anyone who has the MSI P6N SLI Platinum & E8400 in a working state.
I've had the pleasure of perusing these forums for a while in hopes of finding an answer as to why my E8400 isn't working with my P6N SLI Platinum. I've updated my BIOS, I've RMA'd my chip, I've even contacted MSI support (with no reply I might add). I have been so careful when handling these components and thoroughly reading the instructions, to no avail. I've got the board and all components working with a different processor. I've tried the voltage modifications that many have said work, I've tried different memory, I even tried a different video card. So I'm stuck in the same boat as many it seems, however there are one or two posts on this forum and others where people have said they actually got it to work!
So now I really hope I can get this question answered - What is a working config? One of the things I haven't tried yet is a new power supply. My current PS is 650w, but has the 4 pin CPU power connector. From the posts I've read, it shouldn't matter if I have the 4 or the 8. But in reality, does this CPU work on the P6N Plat with an 8 pin connector? I'd be willing to go buy a new PS if thats the case! What else could possibly be the issue? Any and all feedback is appreciated. i really didn't want to start up another thread for this proc/board issue, but perhaps someone else has joined this board by now that may provide the little piece of info that I've been missing.
    Cheers,
    Aaron

according to the website, the 1.6 BIOS had cpu updates in march so I's assume it would have support for the E8400.
What exactly happens when you turn on the system with the E8400?

  • MSI P6N SLI V2 + ATI HD4670

    Hi there!
I just registered to this forum to get some answers considering upcoming config My current config is this:
    Intel Dualcore [email protected]
    Kingston DDR800 2Gt
    Leadtek 7900GS
    MSI P6N SLI V2
Im considering to buy MSI HD4670 512Mt PCIE graphics card but i dont know is it gonna support it fully. I have readed hundreds of posts of "...bought new card, no post" problems. So does anybody know will it work on my P6N SLI motherboard? Thanks

I dun see why it wouldn't work on the rig of your. But before you does that, remember to uninstall any previous graphic card driver.

  • P6N SLI Platinum, no post (also!)

Hey guys.. I think I checked everything, but want to make sure.
Relatively new P6N (bought it, didn't have processor, stored it for the last 6 months) Platinum board. Finally got the CPU and Memory today (info below). Plugging it in, and I get.. nothing. No post, no beeps (with connected speaker), all lights on D-bracket *OFF*, all lights on keyboard *ON*. All fans come on as well. Both yellow/orange LED and the green LED between PCIs come on.
I slowly disconnected everything, and even ONLY with the board and CPU (no vid card and RAM, only front-panel and D-Bracket connected), still same result. Now, I'm thinking it MAY be the CPU, however, I would expect to still get ALL RED on the D-Bracket as per the manual. I don't have ready access to another 775 processor.
    Items:
    CPU - Intel E8400 (Wolfdale)
RAM - Corsair XMS2 (model "TWIN2X2048-6400C4") I've heard there was issues with this, is why I turned the board on without ANY RAM. Yes, it would not have posted, but I would/should have gotten a signal on the D-Bracket!
    PSU - Antec NeoHE (430W, 3 12V rails, +3.3V 22A; +5V 14A; +12V 16A / rail; -12V 0.8A; +5Vsb 2.5A)
The only thing I have left to do is to try it outside the case. However, I'm posting here now in case anyone sees anything obvious I missed. I actually HOPE it's something I can do here - even if it NEEDS a bios update, I would still expect the D-Bracket to give me all reds ("The System will hang here if the CPU is damaged or not installed properly.") However, I'm afraid to turn the board on without a CPU. (Is that safe? Dangerous? I was iffy about not having the RAM in..)
    Thanks all!
    Mike.

The options usually change with the CPU that is installed.
Not sure, if the problem is only the current BIOS or if it is your CPU after all.  It is hard to say at this point.
Eh, I'm hoping it's not the CPU. I can't verify if I get different options with the E8400 only because I get the same result (after updating to 1.5 and 1.6b3 BIOS revs as I had originally - everything powrs on, no D-LEDs (all off, NOT all red) and keyboard LEDs all on. So I don't even get the change to get into the BIOS to verify. :/ I'm sure that if I COULD, I could tweak the settings to at least get a stable system until I could use the processor at it's fullest, but.. as it is now, it's a nice lump of silicon.

    This guy....
    https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=114440.0
... was apparently able to get an E8400 working on a P6N SLI(-FI).  It has the same model name & PCB Version as the P6N SLI Platinum.
I don't know, the best thing is probably to wait for a BIOS Update.  Can you test you processor on another system that already supports Wolfdale CPUs?
I'm waiting. It's impressive - the P6N, even with the cheapest 1.6GHz Celeron processor is really nice. I won't have another LGA775 system to test with for another month. Hopefully, they'll have another beta or have released an update by then..
Thanks for your help, of course!

  • OfficeJet 8500 909a - connection is indicated but it won't print

I have installed the HP Network Diagnostic and it says "The printer is connected and the services related to network connections have been verified and reset to a normal operating state."  The printer shows up in my devices as operating properly and connected.  It works off another computer.  But it won't print a test page or otherwise connect with the computer I'm operating here (Dell Inspiron, with MS 7 Home Premiere).  It has worked fine before.  I've turned the printer on and off, restarted the computer, and generally tried all different ways of turning these things on and off.  What in the world is the matter with this connection?
    This question was solved.
    View Solution.

    Let's try a few things:
    1. Make sure your router has updated firmware and then reboot it by removing its power cord momentarily.
    2. Let's set a static IP address for the printer:
    - Print a Network Config Page from the front of the printer. Note the printer's IP address.
    - Type that IP address into a browser to reveal the printer's internal settings.
    - Choose the Networking tab, then Wireless along the left side, then the IPv4 tab.
    - On this screen you want to set a Manual IP. You need to set an IP address outside the range that the router automatically sets (called the DHCP range). If you know what that is, set an IP outside that range but no higher than 254 (the last number in the address). You can change the DHCP range in the router settings.
    - Use 255.255.255.0 for the subnet (unless you know it is different, if so, use that)
    - Enter your router's IP (ends with .1) for the gateway and first DNS. Leave the second one blank.
    - Click 'Apply'.
Now, shut down the router and printer, start the router, wait, then start the printer.
After this you may need to redo 'Add a Printer' using the new IP address.
Say thanks by clicking "Kudos" "thumbs up" in the post that helped you.

Does Windows XP 32Bit still use all 4 GB but only showes 3GB?  Or if I want to use that additional 1GB I need XP 64Bit?  If I install x64 will it work with 32 bit applications fine?
"Does Windows XP 32Bit still use all 4 GB but only showes 3GB? "
    no.
"Or if I want to use that additional 1GB I need XP 64Bit?"
    yes.
"If I install x64 will it work with 32 bit applications fine?"
yes. pretty old 16 bit application will refuse to work, also you will need to use x64 drivers.

Core 2 Duo will perform WAY BETTER than Pentium 4. It is 100% compatible to Pentium 4. Do you know what Pentium 4 model number you have?
    Pentium 4,  3.2 mhz
    640  <--this is the model number http://www.intel.com/products/processor_number/chart/pentium4.htm
    2m/800fsb
O yes and non of the lights on the D-Bracket go on, the green light and orange light on the P6N are on.

  • Followup-- MSI P6N SLI Platinum does not work with E8400

I am just following up like I said I would... and the *RMA'ed* E8400 still fails to post with a BIOS updated (v1.6) P6N SLI Platinum. It works fine with an E4500... but not the E8400. MSI really shouldn't say it's compatible when it's not. I am going to send the board back to Directron and replace it with the new Gigabyte GA-EP35-DS3L. Very unhappy with MSI right now and probably won't buy from them again. I'm going to stick with another gigabyte for now. Anything I can do before sending it back tonight? I am very disappointed, especially because this really is a perfect board for me.

You can drop MSI an email to see if you are able to get an engineering BIOS to try out.

  • P6N SLI. Will G.Skill memory work with this board?

I have been an exclusive Asus MoBo user over the few years that I've been building my own rigs. Tom's Hardware has a good write-up on MSI boards and it caught my attention and interest, especially after comparing features versus cost as well as positive user reviews.
I'm wanting to build the next system around a Core 2 Duo and eventually include all that would be necessary for an efficient HD-DVD/BlueRay system.
After much comparing I've decided enthusiastically that I want a P6N SLI board. My current system is based on an Asus P5ND2-SLI board sporting a P4 630 CPU and 2 Raptors in RAID 0 configuration. It provides imagery via an EVGA 7800GT CO card. My last minute concern comes from narrow memory compatibility according to the MSI memory guide. This concerns me because my current system uses DDR2 memory and I just recently invested in two 1GB DDR2 667 G.Skill modules for it which I have yet to receive.
My enthusiasm for an MSI board...the one I want...was bolstered by the idea that I thought I could use these new memory modules in it. Not seeing G.Skill in the MSI memory list has dampened my enthusiasm.
If anyone knows if G.Skill will work in this MSI board I'd appreciate the renewal of excitement. Otherwill I'll just spent $20 more for an Asus board.
    Thank you

This is the particular model number of the modules I bought. Thanks for your help.

Just a few days ago there was a Test-Report on the P6N SLI on the German MSI Forum.
    http://www.msi-forum.de/thread.php?threadid=29899
These were the Modules that were used throughout the test:
    G.Skill DIMM Kit 2048MB PC2-6400U CL4-4-4-12 (DDR2-800) (F2-6400PHU2-2GBHZ)
I am not sure of the specific kind of G.Skill modules you ordered.  Here is an overview if all modules with exact model-IDs:
    http://www.gskill.com/gallerymain.html
If you know the exact kind of the RAM-sticks you already purchased you can also have a look here:
    http://www.gskill.com/gstechforum/
The thing is that it is not only a question of if G.Skill modules are supported or not but also a question of which specific model you are planning to install.

  • P6N SLI Plat and floppy drive not working

System says the floppy drive works fine, but I put in a disc and it doesn't recognize it.  All I get is, "Please insert disc".
Windows says that drivers are up to date.
I really need to get it working so I can do a fresh OS install with raid drivers on the floppy.
I think im just retarded, or both my floppy drives are dead... or both my floppy discs are dead.
    Any ideas?
    Intel 6420 C2D
    P6N SLI Platinum
    2x1 G.Skill 800
    2x1 seagate 320's

From what I'm reading it sounds like you are able to boot to Windows at the moment right?
If so, why not skip using a floppy disk to load driver, and just slipstream your RAID drivers into a Windows install CD?
There are tutorials all over the web to do this, here's a good one:
    http://www.maximumpc.com/article/How-To--Slipstream-your-XP-installation
Regarding your floppy issue, it's very possible for your floppies to be dead. Almost all of mine that I have around are toast by the time I get around to using them.
If you're dead set on using a floppy to load your RAID drivers, go buy a couple new floppies and see if you still have the same problem. If so, then you're a new $14 floppy drive away from solving your problem...
