2Ghz Macbook won't boot into OS

I've had it (white 2GHz MB) for a month, and wasn't expecting something like this to happen so soon, if at all. I've had other problems with my PC laptops, but nothing this..weird and unexpected. I got a Mac just so I wouldn't get such weird and wonderful problems such as this.
I was just browsing on the net, nothing special, I bookmarked a page in Firefox, and then the screen comes up telling me to shut down and restart. Did that, had the apple logo come up, think for a few seconds, then the restart screen came up again.
Ever since then, when I try to turn it on, something (I'm assuming it's the hard drive) whirs up for a second, the apple logo comes up and the intro sound goes, and then it shuts down. Then it repeats this process, with the HD whirring up, intro sound going, apple logo appearing, then shutting down. The first time through this, the white indicator light turns on, but after the first shutdown, it stays off. I can stop it from cycling through this by holding the power down until it shuts down, but that's the only way that seems to affect it. Trying to turn it on again only makes it go through this again.
I'm planning on bringing it into the store when I can, but I live several hours away from the nearest. I guess I could send it in too, but I don't want to be without my laptop for a month or more if it's something that would just require the right input of keys or something simple.
Help would be greatly appreciated.
2GHz Macbook Mac OS X (10.4.6) won't boot into OS, weird problem

I've now tried inserting the install disk, but what I had assumed was the HD seems to be the disk drive instead, because now it seems that it is pushing the disk out, not allowing it in.
The only added RAM was instore when I got it, upgraded to 1 gig. No recent applications that I can remember. I don't think I did anything different with it at least for quite a few hours.
I don't know what a bad battery would have to do with it, it was fully charged, and does the same thing when the AC isn't plugged in.
I've been very happy with the laptop and Macs in general until now. Everything's run beautifully, I haven't been getting discolouration or anything, there's a bit of a whine but it's quieter overall than any computer I've had before. It's just a really, really odd problem (that seems to be isolated, from what I've seen looking around). Unfortunately, this problem is making it totally unusable for the moment.

When 20 in. ACD is connected, MacBook won't boot into XP with closed lid

Hi all,
I bought a 20 in. ACD yesterday to hook-up to my MacBook, and am now having this problem: When the MacBook is connected to the ACD and the lid is closed I can't boot into XP from OSX using BootCamp (v. 1.4). However, when the lid is open I can boot into XP and XP will display on the MacBook's screen, once I close the lid, it might take about 8-10 secs. but XP will then display on the ACD. Ths does not happen at all the when I boot out of XP and into OSX with the lid closed.
I've played around with XP's display settings but can't change the behavior. Does anyone else have this problem? It's weird.

The problem is probably the drive. I have several of these drives and have no trouble booting with any of the computers I use.

MacBook won't boot into OS X (Lion)

I installed Lion about a week after its release, and didn't have any problems with it until a few days ago. I can boot into my Windows partition and "Recovery HD" partition no problem. From Recovery HD, I've run a disk utility check (which yielded an OK), and a subsequent fix anyway (which also yielded an OK). After that it still wouldn't boot, so I went into Windows and opened and read files on my Macintosh HD, and that worked just fine. Booted into single-user mode and ran a fsck -fy, that came back with an OK, so again, I tried to boot OS X to no avail. I went back into Recovery HD and did a Lion reinstall. I didn't actually see that finish, because it finished while I was asleep, but my computer was off when I woke up (which is indicative of an attempted restart, since when it tries to boot into OS X, it hangs at the Apple logo with the spinning wheel. Note that this is different than before, when it would get past that screen and leave me at a blank gray screen, where I could control the pointer.) Can anybody suggest something else I can do to fix this?

the utilities are on the disc too... try holding C at boot like mentioned... otherwise your optical drive or system bus may be bad.
also try a PRAM reset too: hold command option P R at startup until you hear the chime a 2nd time.

My MacBook won't boot into recovery mode after new hard drive installation. Please help!

I just installed a new hard drive. On boot it keeps on going to the flashing folder with a question mark inside.
I was able to format the new hard drive but am unable to boot into recovery mode to install the operating system over the air.
When I hold down Command -R it keeps on taking me to the flashing folder.
Please help!

A new hard drive doesn't have a recovery partition. It's totally blank.You're going to need either your original install discs or a Snow Leopard retail disc from which partition, format and install OS X.

Macbook won't boot into tiger

I bought a Macbook from a friend, he did not have his original disc so i figured no problem I will just buy a retail version of Tiger.
Well the Mac refuses to boot from the tiger disc, just brings me to a screen with a foler with a question mark on it.
Is there anything I can do today? I can't wait until apple send me replacement disc this is why I went ahead and got a copy of Tiger today. Can I install Windows then OSX then wipe out windows?
If I use an install Disc from a different Macbook can I switch it out at the choose language screen to avoid the "this disc can not be installed on this mac" error?
Any other ideas, I'm getting beyond frustrated with this Mac experience.

The retail disc will not work for Intel Macs. If you have another MacBook, its disc might work. If it doesn't, and the other MacBook is a newer model than yours, you may be able to do an install via FireWire. Boot you MacBook in Target Disk Mode (hold down "T" while booting). Connect the computers with a FireWire cable, boot the other MacBook from its install DVD, and tell the installer to install onto your MacBook's hard drive.
If the other MacBook is older, you won't be able to do an install, but if it's Tiger has been updated, you can copy its disk to your MacBook using SuperDuper!, by booting your MacBoot into FireWire Target Disk Mode.

I've have run Disk Utility. After Verifying the disk it said it needed Repairing - so tried doing that and got the message " Error: Utility can't repair this disk. Back up as many of your files as possible, reformat the disk, and restore your backed-up files" I have got Time Machine but haven't backed-up since Dec 12...Can I use "Restore" to copy the MBP HD to an external HD and then re-install Lion?

Macbook won't boot. When turned on, it starts clicking; after a while, I get a gray screen with a blinking folder in the middle that has a question mark on it. After a minute or two, it shuts off.

That folder with the question mark icon means that the MacBook can't find the boot directory. That can either mean it can't find the hard drive or the Operating System data on the hard drive is somehow corrupted.
Put your install DVD into the optical drive (CD/DVD drive) and reboot. Be sure to either use the disc that came with your Mac, or, if you installed a later Mac OS X version from disc, use the newer disc. As soon as you hear the boot chime, hold down the "c" key on your keyboard (or the Option Key until the Install Disk shows up) until the apple shows up. That will force your MacBook to boot from the install DVD in the optical drive.
Or if you are running 10.7 Lion, boot from the recovery partition (Command +R on boot) and use Disk Utility to repair your OS 10.7 partition.
When it does start up, you'll see a panel asking you to choose your language. Choose your language and press the Return key on your keyboard once. It will then present you with an Installation window. Completely ignore this window and click on Utilities in the top menu and scroll down to Disk Utility and click it. When it comes up is your Hard Drive in the list on the left?
If it is, then click on the Mac OS partition of your hard drive in the left hand list. Then select the First Aid Tab and run Repair Disk. The Repair Disk button won't be available until you've clicked on the Mac OS partition on your hard drive. If that repairs any problems run it again until the green OK appears and then run Repair Permissions. After repairing use Startup Disk from the same menu to choose your hard drive for restarting from your hard drive.
If your hard drive isn’t recognized in Disk Utility then your hard drive is probably dead.

I have just boot in safe mode. (holding Shift during boot)
but my macbook won't boot in Safe mode. It just freeses with a grey screen for hours and wont boot.
I tried to leave it overnight to boot, but it didn't.
Please help me make my macbook to boot in SafeMode.

There is a bug in fsck_hfs that is affecting a bunch of people. Basically as your comptuer starts in safe mode, it runs a file system check (fsck) against your hard drive, it gets to a certain point and... just sits there. No one knows why outside of apple.
Lots of info here, including a way to get around it by tricking the system to think fsck had been run, though the fsck will not be complete so it is not a good solution.

My MacBook won't boot if my iPod 5G is connected to the USB port.
If I unplug it, it will boot normally.

Do you have a bootable backup?
What operating system are you running? If OS X 10.6 or lower, boot from your original OS X DVD or a retail OS X DVD and then delete files as needed. Your goal should be to get to 10% of your disk capacity free.
If you have OS X 10.7 Lion or 10.8 Mountain Lion, you don't have many choices in recovery mode (boot holding the command and r keys down).
If you have a FireWire or Thunderbolt connection, you can try target disk mode with another mac.
If none of those work, perhaps your local Apple store can help with a bootable external drive.

Macbook won't boot after Airport update, stuck in single user mode

Wasn't sure what forum to put this in, so I'll start here. After re-imaging student machines from the server, for some reason the new Macbooks no longer recognize they have an airport card. On another machine I download the appropriate Airport software, copy to thumbdrive, and install on student laptop. After required reboot, the Macbook refuses to boot into OS X- I get the grey apple logo, spinning gear, then drops to what appears to be single user mode, with the exception that it seems to be "refreshing" itself constantly with messages appearing for brief moments (too fast to read). It cycles so fast that I can't type anything before it is gone again. If I purposely boot into single user mode, everything behaves as normal, if I mount as fire-wire drive, everything looks good. But I can't get into OS X. Before I brick more student machines, have any ideas?

Some added info, i CAN boot the bricked machine into Safe mode, but at reboot I get stuck in the same cycle again.
Oh, and in SafeBoot, the Macbook still tells me that no Airport card is installed, even though I know it does (and it's not knocked loose or anything).....

Macbook won't boot up - grey screen only

I have a core duo MacBook from summer 2007.
All of a sudden the MacBook won't boot up. The battery is fully charged and AC adapter plugged in (same symptoms if not plugged in). The following occurs upon pressing the power button:
1) Start-up chime sounds
2) Can hear hard drive and fans start up
3) Screen turns grey
4) Nothing happens (screen still grey)
Thoughts? I tried resetting PRAM and PMU with no changes.

I have the same problem, just the grey screen and tried
- resetting PRAM (second chime, so this should be OK)
- Safe Mode (just the same)
and pressing Option (or C) to choose the Mac OS X Install Disc gives me the wonderful cursor which can be moved by moving the mouse. No harddisk and even no Install DVD are displayed on the screen.
Also The Apple Hardware Test (by pressing D) doesn't get further than the, now familiar, grey screen.
I pressed the keys with different keyboards, with the original white keyboard and with the aluminium keyboard.
As I've tried everything, I think there's something seriously wrong. Does anybody have some last tips that I can try?

So my White Macbook won't boot up anymore after trying to reformat. While trying to install a fresh copy of Snow Leopard, the Macbook just froze and I had to reset. Now, while trying to boot it up, it hangs at a white screen with a folder with a question mark.
My install disk is still in there, so when I try to boot up while holding C, nothing happens. It either goes to the folder with a question mark or the screen stays white. So after that I tried holding option to go to the drives nothing happens. I just see a white screen and a cursor.
I tried resetting PRAM and tried booting in safe mode and everything but to no avail. Everything results in just a white screen or just a folder with a question mark.
Can I do anything before I have to bring it to the Apple Store? The optical drive should work because before I reformatted it, I could see that the disk was in the drive because the icon was in the upper right.

Startup your Mac while holding down the Option key. That should prompt the Startup Manager window where you can select the startup disk.

MacBook Won't Boot just on AC.

My recent issues are power related.
Won't boot. Reason: Dead battery at 0 mAh.
Won't boot with dead battery even on charge...
When I take out the battery, it won't boot anyways.
I got lucky since I plugged it in when I left it off charge for the night, and went away about 10 minutes, and it boots. Now that won't boot it up... I take out the battery and tried to boot it since I know it's dead. Nothing.
I have 2 MagSafe adapters (One is OEM and is spliced (Charges and fine), and another is not OEM (stupid eBay lied) ) and when I remove the battery to boot just on AC power, nothing. Tried both chargers, both plugs, 2 tips and extension cable, Nothing.
I noticed the light is a dim green when I plug in my OEM charger to my MacBook.
So how can I get it to boot on just AC power? Noone I know has any type of Mac...

If your MacBook won't boot on just the AC adapter, and you are certain the AC adapter is not damaged, then there is a hardware issue with your computer that needs to be repaired.
