2nd display disappears on switching focus to another application

Hi,
I'm running LR5 on Windows. I've got the grid view on my primary display and a second display showing the loupe view.
If the focus moves to another application (i.e. a small notepad window on the primary display) then I can still see LR with its grid view in the background behind notepad on the primary display however the loupe view on the second display disappears and I can see the desktop.
Is it possible to configure LR not to automatically hide the 2nd display when the input foucs moves to a different wiindow? I'd like to be able to continue displaying the image on the 2nd display while I'm doing something else on the primary display.
I've not been able to check but I've a feeling this is new behaviour in 5, I don't think 3 or 4 did this.
Many thanks in advance for your time/help! :-)

No, sorry.  I've just checked LR3 for you, and the behaviour's the same.

  • In the Calendar app in Yosemite, how can I prevent the event's details window to disappear when transferring focus to another app?

When you click on an event to get the full details in a separate window, like a phone number for the meeting, if you move to another app like Skype the details window hides and you cannot look at the comments.
    This is kind of annoying.

It's not iDVD that opens when you insert a burned DVD,  It's DVD Player.  Set the Apple preferences to igonre when inserting a video DVD.  You will have to launch DVD Ripper manually and locate and open the VOB folder on the DVD disk.

  • PB thinks 2nd display is hooked up when not

I hook up a 2nd monitor at work to hold my Adobe palettes. However, when I use the PB at home without the 2nd monitor, the computer reads that all of the palettes are open while they are not visible.
I've checked my system preferences to detect a 2nd monitor but it doesn't detect it. Please help as I am unable to complete my work without the 2nd hookup.
One other problem, I've lost the 2nd display in Hurricane Katrina so purchasing another right now is out of the question. Thanks!!

Did you try that while your Adobe application was open? If no, try that.
Next, with it open, try going into display preferences. (You've tried detect displays already, so...) Change the resolution to something smaller, and then back again. - this may force the window into the LCD.
Just a thought, but is your Adobe app. up to date for 10.4 Tiger?

  • Using an iMac as a 2nd display for another iMac?

    Hi all,
is it possible to use an iMac as a 2nd display for another iMac?
I guess it depends (if at all possible) on the models, right?
Would it be possible with two of the currently available iMac 27" models?
Is it just connecting the two video jacks with a cable? That would mean that the jack is input AND output connector at the same time: the video signal would be output from iMac 1 and serve as input for iMac 2.
    Thoughts?
    Thanks,
    Stefan.

Awesome, David! Thank you! That helped a lot!
Additional question: because running applications on the target-display-mode-iMac keep running: will I be able to connect from the source iMac to the target-mode-iMac via OS X's Share Screen functionality? So that I can still USE the 2nd (target-display-mode) iMac for running applications and accessing them? Or is the iMac in target display mode really just a dumb display? Will ssh'ing to it work?
A little background: programs like Cubase and Logic work really great with two screens. Additionally, some audio plugins really need a lot of CPU power and some of those can actually distribute the number crunching via the LAN to other computers. So my thought is: run Cubase on iMac #1, use iMac #2 as a 2nd screen (will work, thanks to David's reply) AND use iMac #2's CPU, too, to help some Cubase plugins' number crunching. Would that work?
    Thanks a lot,
    Stefan.

  • QuickTime 10.1 does not seem to be compatible with OSX Lion  - clicking on the displayed file window switches to another displayed app, doesn't play or control the video.

If I open a movie file (appears to be any type - .mov, m4v, mv4) it displays on the desktop, but when clicked, the Mac reverts to another open application (immediately UNDER to point of the mouse click) and not the displayed movie file.  It appears the screen mapping is flawed...
Anyone else have this problem? (does not appear to be a problem with QT7)  Running OSX Lion 10.7.3 and QT Player 10.1 (501.8) - all most current as far as I can tell...

Yes, same problem. The active clickable area appears to be shifted down and to the right as if it is the shadow mask (to make it look like layers in the display) that is responding. Means you can't move the control palette to the top of the window (to not block security video with time track at bottom) or even close the window. The X in the bubble appears when moused over but the click goes through it.
Most obvious if you open more than one movie at a time and they cascade. You can't get at the ones underneath until a few down the stack and it gets an upper wrong one.
      Who's testing these things?
For comparison testing to recreate problem: Mac Pro (System Information has also been dumbed down from System Profiler, push System Report for the useful stuff) with an ATI Radeon HD 5770 driving two displays.
Also viewing desktop of another computer on the network is slower and, for instance in World of Warcraft, the hand pointer flickers.
And finder windows can't be narrowed as much any more to show only a list of file names for drag and drop sorting.
Was hoping that by 10.7.3, it would be safe to jump, since several posts told me how to Terminal > networksetup -setv6off Ethernet to fix iTunes streaming to expresses and other dumb bugs.

  • Labwindows recompiles files when I switch from the development environment to another application

I am writing a labwindows driver, but having issues with the environment itself.  I am able to compile the .c file for the driver, and my panels are working.  I am having problems with labwindows recompiling the .c file even though nothing has changed.  It is a random problem that I have seen before, but never managed to get around.  The problem shows up in a variety of instances.
I.E.  While in interactive execution, I can click on another application on the taskbar (internet explorer, email, etc.)  and labwindows displays a message that the c file is being recompiled.  Nothing in the file changed!  Why does it try and recompile when it is simply losing focus?  This is 'random'.  Just when I think I have found a way to reliably reproduce the issue, it quits recompiling when I switch applications.  I have tried playing with the build options, but haven't had any repeatable success.  I even tried to enable the -o option, but is still recompiles the file.  (maybe -o won't work on a driver since it won't build without a main?)  I have even had issues with calling printf in a function during interactive execution.  It recompiles the c file for no apparent reason right after the stdio window prints the message.  At this point, the stdio window closes, and labwindows pops up the compiling message again.  It kills my interactive session, and I have to redeclare all of my variables to continue checking out my driver.
I see the same issue randomly when I go back to the project from another application. (Click on labwindows in the taskbar, and it immediately compiles the c file.)
I have seen this in other projects, and it appears that the issue is limited to instrument drivers.  When labwindows pops up the message that it is compiling files it is almost always a driver that is loaded as an instrument.  I played with unloading the instrument but leaving the .fp in the project, but I don't think that worked. (It has been awhile since I tried to figure this out.)  When working on a driver, it would be difficult to unload the .fp or not load the instrument anyway.
(I just clicked on labwindows in the taskbar to see if I left anything out.  Labwindows popped up the message that it was compiling the c file.  It appears that I can go back and forth between the labwindows icon in the taskbar and the cvi icon ~15-20 times and then labwindows will recompile the file.  I even walked away from my computer for a couple of minutes, and it compiled when I came back and clicked on the labwindows icon.)
I am running labwindows 9.1 (but have seen this on 8 also)
The files are on a network drive.
(Could it be mcaffee or some network security stuff confusing labwindows?)

My pc is currently running Windows XP sp3.
I first saw this issue when I went from LabWindows 7.1? to 8.1?   I am sure that I had the issue in 8.1
I was able to reproduce the issue in production on a pc running windows 2000.  (Which is what I had at my desk previously, and had seen the issue.)
I asked another member of the test engineering group, and I am not the only one seeing the issue.
One of the earlier replies mentioned the auto save feature.  When I went to production to see if I could reproduce the problem there, I opened CVI and explorer.  I wanted to check the time-date stamp on the .c file that keeps recompiling.  The time-date stamp was a day old, and did not change when the period of time for auto save was passed.  (It probably would if I made changes but didn't save the file?)  I was able to switch back and forth between the explorer window and cvi, and the file would recompile.  I played with turning off the auto save, enabling the build status window, making the -o option compatible with cvi 5.0, displaying the build status column, etc.  It appeared at one point that it had quit recompiling when switching between applications.  I went back to my desk, and tried to match the settings, but never reached the same conclusion.
There is not anything special about the project I am working on.  It is a labwindows driver for a pxi module.  There are only three files in the project, the .c .h and .fp.  The .c file keeps getting recompiled at seemingly random times.  It is especially frustrating during interactive execution while testing my code/function panels.  If I switch to another application and back, I almost always have to start over because compiling the file closes the interactive execution.  I have to redeclare all of the variables, and re-run any of the setup panels that are required.  (I have to open the DRM, load the module fpga/dac, and then I can run the panel I am actually trying to test.)  I have similar problems when trying to troubleshoot with printf statements, as it seems to recompile when focus switches to the stdio window.  I have resorted to a test project, where I can add the function calls and skip having to do any work via interactive execution.
I haven't been able to find anyone outside of where I work reporting the same issue.  Maybe it has something to do with IT/viruscan/etc.  It is definately a strange issue.
(I have switched back to CVI several times while writing this, and the .c filed recompiled about 20% of the time.  At one point,  I had left the build options dialog open when switching back and forth.  I did not change any options, but the .c file recompiled when I closed the options window?)
Occasionally, when I see what appears to be the recompile message flash up, my interactive execution does not halt.  I.E. I don't have to redeclare my variables.  It is sometimes hard to see what the message says, you just see a dialog box pop up and disapear really quickly.

  • 2nd display resolution 1440x900 and cannot be changed!

I have connected a 2nd display to my laptop using Toshiba DynaDock.  The monitor is an Acer S200 with native resolution of 1600x900. Monitor is connected to DynaDock by DVI cable. However I cannot get the monitor to display in 1600x900.  The maximum available is 1440x900. I am sure that when I first plugged in the monitor using VGA that I could get 1600x900 resolution.  At some point this stopped. I really don't know if it has to do with switching to the DVI cable. I am running Windows 8.1.  The S70 laptop has a 17" display at 1600x900. I'm also confused by the display adapters.  The laptop has an AMD Radeon Graphics adapter.  However, it appears that this is not being used.  When I right click on laptop display, I get the HD Intel Graphics adapter control. This adapter has no idea that there is another monitor attached.  It only controls the built in display. I can access the AMD Radeon Catalyst Control center by right clicking on 2nd display, then click Graphics Properties. This opens the AMD Catalyst Control center.  However there is nothing within the CCC that allows me to select a resolution.  If I click Screen Resolution from right click on 2nd display, I get a window "Change the appearance of your displays". This shows 2 monitors. #1 is Mobile PC Display, 1600x900, Landscape, Extend these displays. #2 is "No Monitor", 1440x900, Landscape, Extend these displays. If I open the DynaDock Display Link Manager (version 7.7.60366.0) , I see 2. Dynadock U3.0. This opens a set of options. If I click screen resolution, there is a list of available options.  The list jumps from 1440x900 to 1600x1200.  There is no option for 1600x900.  If I click any resolution above 1440x900, the "Input Not Supported" message appears on the monitor. Once again, I want to display my 2nd monitor at 1600x900 resolution, but I cannot figure out how to do that. Please help.

  • Connecting a 2nd display

    HI,
I have a Mac Pro, circa Dec 07 (therefore no mini display port) and currently use a 23" cinema display. I want to attach another identical display and assume I can do this via the other (spare) DVI port at the back of the Mac?
However, my main monitor has the firewire and USB cables plugged into the tower which come cabled along with the DVI cable, but when connecting the 2nd display can I just connect the DVI cable into the Mac Pro and not bother with the firewire and USB cable which are bound with it?
Obviously I understand that using the firewire and USB cable from the first display increases my available ports (at the rear of the first display)... but do I really need to connect those with the 2nd display, because I'm running out of ports at the back of the Mac!
    Hope that makes sense...
    Thanks,
    Mark

One thing that's occured to me, somebody might know...
I calibrate my main monitor, so when the second display is either being mirrored, or just an extension of the desktop, I guess the existing calibration is sufficient as the main display calls the shots?
Or am I wrong, should both be calibrated as separate displays prior to using them together?
Thanks to anybody who can help...

  • 2nd display not as bright as first display

I have 2 facory video cards installed. They're the same (ATI 5770) each have mini ports and aldo DVI.
When I boot up each day at work, the second display won't go to full brightness. USBs are both plugged in and I do get the brightness control levers on the preferences for both displays. However, the 2nd display (at 100%) is just not as bright as the primary display. Both are the same 27" displays; each on their own dedicated video cards. I would say it is about 20% less bright.
Sometimes if I re-boot or reset SMC and monkey with it, I can get it to boot at 100% brightness but lately it's choosing on it's own to be dimmer. Switching USB ports didn't seem to have any effect. I am assuming it's a hardware issue bc I have reset PRAM, SMC, Disk Repair, trashing preferences, and so I'm a little bummed this expensive 27" LED display can't guage it's full brightness.
Thanks kindly for any input / solutions.

To post a hopefully helpful follow-up.. over past couple of days I got it to hold up its full brightness. To restore the full brightness of the 2nd display I disconnected / reconnected the display cable a few times until I noticed it was suddenly matching the full brightness of the 1st display. Is it the 2nd video card? The display? The G5 hardware/software? Can't say.
But after re-booting overnight, it retained the full brightness. Not sure why this happened/s, could be an isolated issue with something slightly defective?? Regardless, maybe this will help someone where both displays are not at full 100% brightness. Replug them a couple times to see if that tricks it back into action.
Remember, my toggles in the display prefs said both were at 100% yet the 2nd display was clearly 20% darker before I got them back to true 100%.
In the end, these LED displays are truely magnificent (aside from my isolated issue).

  • 2nd display connected to iMac stays black (Thunderbolt - HDMI)

    Hi everyone,
with my new iMac (purchased 2 weeks ago) I have the problem that my 2nd display will stay black after I connected it to the Thunderbolt port. The display shows the blue background for a split second, then i goes black (and stays that way). I find the following lines in the log file:

The display is an AOC e2343F2, with two HDMI and one VGA port. I am using a Mini-Displayport to HDMI cable to connect the display. This worked with my Mac Pro (from 2006, AMD Radeon HD5770) without a problem.
Is this a problem with the in 10.7.x included drivers?
    With the new Thunderbolt port?
I tried it with 10.7.2 and 10.7.3 on the iMac and the Mac Pro. It works like a charm on the Mac Pro, but not on the iMac. Do I need to buy the overpriced Apple adapter and can't use my adapter cable anymore?

Just a theory.  Looking at the log errors you showed the system cannot get the display bounds.  My theory is that the display is not able to pass the EDID (extended display identification data) through a TB port.  While your 5770 could handle it the TB can't.  Again, it's just my theory.
Another thing to check is your Displays system preferences.  See if the Display is showing in the Arrangement tab.  If so click Detect Displays and also Gather Windows to bring the second monitor's Displays preferences on to your main monitor.  If you get this far then set the appropriate resolution and refresh rate (if refresh rate is shown).
If there is no Displays Arrangement tab then the system doesn't even know the second monitor is connected.  I don't have a solution for this problem since I don't have TB.   Although the resolution is not as good you may have to try a VGA adapter for that monitor.  No guarantees that will work either of course.

  • 2nd display doest work after sleep

So my 2nd display was working fine until i put the computer to sleep. Now it doesnt come back even if i unplug the monitor, power off the monitor then back on, nothig is working, I have to restart the machine.
    thoughts?

Your Dell most likely has multiple inputs. Have you tried setting the current input to DVI?
I have a 24" Dell which allows me to switch between DVI 1, DVI 2, HDMI, DisplayPort, VGA, Component, etc. Your input is probably not the right one.
Also make sure the DVI cable is firmly connected and undamaged.

  • ADC from vid card to a VGA 2nd display, out of stock?

We have an old quicksilver G4 800 mhz tower that a co-worker wants to have a 2nd display attached to. The card has 2 outputs, a VGA and an ADC. About a year ago, I went to our local Apple Reseller (not an apple store) and bought a ADC to VGA adaptor for 30 bucks (for another machine in use). It was by Dr. Bott. There is nothing on their website now. Dr. Bott service stated that Apple had something to do with the discontinued status? Locked down their technology?
Some site show any ADC to VGA adaptor discontinued.
    What is up?
Alternatives? Should I just get a new cheap graphics card? or are there ther alternatives. Yes, this is old technology, and we will get new computers, but we will have this machine a few more years...
    Thanks for any help
Mac Pro 2.66 Ghz   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

Apple did not try to stop others from using ADC. They made it an open standard, but few other manufacturers used it. Formac did make a LCD display with ADC. Most display makers didn't want to make models that would only work with a Mac, even though it would be cheaper (no power supply needed). Other computer makers didn't use it because they would need bigger power supplies (Apple made a CRT with ADC that needed 113 watts), adapters would be needed for most displays, and they would need special graphics cards. Because of lack of demand from other computer makers, no graphics card maker made any ADC cards for non-Apple computers.
Apple dropped AC for several reasons:
Multiple displays were being used more, and there was only one ADC per computer. DVI to ADC adapters are expensive and messy.
They wanted to sell their displays to non-Mac users.
Bigger displays needed more power (30" needs 150 watts)
With their main customer gone, the connector maker dropped the connectors, so adapter makers have no more parts for the adapters. Adapters are now scarce and expensive, but it's not Apple's fault.
There are still a few ADC to VGA adapters for sale:
    <http://www.mac-pro.com/s.nl/it.A/id.230/.f?sc=2&category=128>
    <http://www.welovemacs.com/mcaadcvga.html>
If the Quicksilver is the earlier (2001) model, such as the dual 800 Mhz, the adapter won't be useful with any of the graphic cards that originally came with it. It will work with 2002 Quicksilvers, such as the single 800MHz.

  • LR5 - Photos in 2nd Display are blurry / don't render completely - intermittent issue

Just upgraded to Lightroom 5, and the performance issues I saw in 4 appear to be gone - which is awesome. I've come up on an issue that I've seen referenced in other posts, but only for LR4. Also, the issue seems to be slightly different than mine. My issue is that when I have the 2nd display running in Loupe mode, the image won't render completely and looks blurry/fuzzy, when in Develop mode on the first screen. However, it's not every time. Sometimes it works fine. Sometimes it takes a few seconds, and then it works. Sometimes, it doesn't ever work. It just sits in a blurry state - not fully rendered. Sometimes if I go to the next photo, and then back, it will then load. Sometimes that doesn't work.
While I did have tons of performance issues in LR4 (including 4.3 and 4.4), this was not something I remember seeing.
    I'm running Windows 7 64-bit, i7 2600-K, 24gb RAM, multiple SSDs.
    Any help would be appreciated.

I'm having the exact same problem in LR5
Selecting another picture and coming back usually fixes the problem.

I went from a Mac Mini to an iMac 5K. The Mac Mini display was also my TV. Still using it as my TV, but would like to know what I'd need to connect it to the iMac 5K as a 2nd display. Also, by doing so, would I still be able to easily switch it from 2nd display to TV?

Do you recommend a certain brand Mini-display port to HDMI adapter? I looked on the Apple store page as well as Amazon. The reviews of the ones I looked at weren't great. They all seem to either be defective or die within a year.

  • Display disappearing in viewer and in ext monitor

I am at my second project using Color, so I'm pretty new to it.
The first time it worked out fine.
This time I am encountering a strange problem.
I send the project from FCP, it takes me a couple of times to get it to open in Color, but I finally make it.
Once in Color I start grading my shots. As soon as I drag a grade from one shot to another though, the displays disappear, either my external display than the one in the viewer on my computer monitors, and there's nothing I can do to get it back. I have to resend the project back from FCP, just to have the same problem occur.
Anybody has any idea why it's doing that?
    Thanks

Nope. We aren't looking over your shoulder so how can we tell based upon the information you've not given?
It would nice to know what video format you're working with. It would be nice to know if you've followed the stringent rules for prepping your sequences for Color. It would be nice to know your equipment software/hardware infrastructure.
But to throw a guess out there, since you're using a G5, I'm guessing your video card is substandard and not liking what you're using for video.
