2nd Display for iMac

hey! i know i can use my imac as a 2nd (mirrored) display and that's cool. I would like to see everything on my TV and I know it has the port for it, but the problem is my mac is like 25 ft from my tv. does anyone know if there's a wireless solution to this? not like apple tv or anything, i want to be able to see everything on my TV, not just media. Sorry, but I couldn't really narrow this down during the search. Thanks!

Just spent 45' on a live chat with Apple support, who answered my question: it can't be done. The MBA is not able to be used as a secondary display as I had intended. The other way around, so using the iMac's display as a secondary one for the MBA does work.
Hope this helps somebody to avoid the mistake I made.

  • Using an iMac as a 2nd display for another iMac?

    Hi all,
is it possible to use an iMac as a 2nd display for another iMac?
I guess it depends (if at all possible) on the models, right?
Would it be possible with two of the currently available iMac 27" models?
Is it just connecting the two video jacks with a cable? That would mean that the jack is input AND output connector at the same time: the video signal would be output from iMac 1 and serve as input for iMac 2.
    Thoughts?
    Thanks,
    Stefan.

Awesome, David! Thank you! That helped a lot!
Additional question: because running applications on the target-display-mode-iMac keep running: will I be able to connect from the source iMac to the target-mode-iMac via OS X's Share Screen functionality? So that I can still USE the 2nd (target-display-mode) iMac for running applications and accessing them? Or is the iMac in target display mode really just a dumb display? Will ssh'ing to it work?
A little background: programs like Cubase and Logic work really great with two screens. Additionally, some audio plugins really need a lot of CPU power and some of those can actually distribute the number crunching via the LAN to other computers. So my thought is: run Cubase on iMac #1, use iMac #2 as a 2nd screen (will work, thanks to David's reply) AND use iMac #2's CPU, too, to help some Cubase plugins' number crunching. Would that work?
    Thanks a lot,
    Stefan.

  • Using a MacBook as 2nd monitor for iMac?

Hi. Got a shiny new 20" iMac with the 256MB graphics. I understand this unit can drive an external display without too much stress via the mini-DVI out. Question is, since the household is getting a Macbook soon anyways, and I'll only occasionally need a 2nd-display, is there a way to use the Macbook as a second 'dumb' monitor, simply displaying whatever is being fed to it by the iMac?
    Thanks!

Hi Duckman54: Congrats on the new Mac(s), but unfortunately the MacBook has no video input capability. You can however use another 20" monitor with the iMac.

  • Second Display for iMac G5

    Hi all
Is it possible to setup a send display for an imac G5?

The iMac G5 uses the Mini VGA port for connecting to external displays and can use either of these $35(Aus) adaptors:
    Mini VGA - VGA
    Mini VGA - Composite/S-Video.

  • Companion Display for iMac

I'm looking for a second display for my iMac. The Thudersbolt display is too big and prciey. Can anyone recommend an monitor with similar diplay characetrics of an iMac? I'm using a 27 inch late 2012 model.
    Thanks in advance.
    Jeff

When you find a suitable display, note there may be a need to get an extra display adapter and or cable to best attach the display to the computer; this because some adapters or cables may not allow use of a higher resolution, though such may be supported by the computer's graphic card.
There may be Thunderbolt to Other adapters available, so the size of the display is secondary to compatibility.
According to http://mactracker.ca your 27-inch Late 2012 iMac has two Thunderbolt ports...
    Display Modes
Dual display extended, video mirroring, AirPlay Mirroring, and Target Display
    External Resolution
Up to 2560 by 1600 pixels
Check the different adapters or cables for your model in the Apple Store, where you select a computer (as if to buy) then look into extras, such as custom or BTO, to see they list parts. This information may be helpful when looking for a local product when matching the display to the computer ports. The latest model may offer different configurations. A retail specialist should have them too.
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • 2nd display for my iMac - Recommendations?

    Hi,
    I have a 24 inches 2009 iMac.
I would like to add a second display. Nothing too big - something like 19-20 inches.
    Any recommendation? brands, model?
Any brands come with the mini display connector?
What are the characteristics I should be looking for the ensure I get acceptable performance (let say similar to the display of my iMac) and good integration with the Mac?
    Thanks

In many shops you can filter on specs.
    Exclude screens with TN panels
Include screens with DisplayPort (DVI or HDMI is possible too, but the adapters are more expensive)
Set size to maximum 22" (most displays are 21-22 inch nowadays, 19 inch ones are DODO's).
    Things you will find are:
    HP ZR22W
    Dell Ultrasharp U2212HM

  • Best 2nd monitor for iMac Intel 20"

A few months back I stumbled upon a great article comparing Apple and 3rd party monitors that could match up well with the iMac Intel 20".. of course I can't find it now that I'm using actually using this iMac. I'm curious to hear your experiences/views on 2nd monitors that match up well for this specific computer. Thanks

There is a MiniDVI output port on this iMac. Simply purchase one of the following adaptors and configure the dual display in Apple menu > System Preferences... > Displays. (The options appear when you connect the display):
    Mini DVI - DVI
    Mini DVI - VGA
    Mini DVI - Composite/S-Video.
DVI will also certainly provide the best picture quality but the exact choice of display depends on your budget and intended usage. For example budget LCD displays are inappropriate for work that requires colour accuracy.
Your iMac will support displays with the following resolutions:
    Digital resolutions up to 1920 x 1200.
    Analogue resolutions up to 2045 x 1536

  • Two External Displays for iMac

Is it possible to run two external displays off of an iMac? I have a small display running and just was giving an old second display so I was wondering if I could run both at the same time?

It's a real low-down shame that the HD5750-equipped 27-inch iMac cannot support triple displays.
All of the HD5750 video cards available for Windows PCs support triple displays (two DVI and one DisplayPort) with the Eyefinity technology that was built into the HD5750's GPU.
Having one iMac 27-inch flanked by two additional 2560x1440 monitors would be so SWEET.

  • 2nd display in iMac-style?

    Hi all,
    i would like to add a 2nd 20" display to my 20" Alu-iMac.
Has anybody seen a display, which is very similar to the iMac-display? The same height
of the stand, aluminium-design and so on, too?
Do the ACD have the same height, so that you could place the without any problems side
by side? I similiar design would be very nice.
    Any suggestions? :o)
    Thanks a lot!

The Apple Cinema Display is probably going to be the closest aesthetically to the iMac though the overall height is not going to match up. The 20" ACD has a total height of 15.9" and the 20" iMac 18.5". You could get a different brand LCD that has a height adjustment but it probably won't match the brushed aluminum look as well. You might just try and find something to sit it on to make up the height difference.

  • Secondary 4K display for iMac 27inch

Will my iMac 27inch (late2012) support a 4K display? - Philips BDM4065UC/00 UHD 4k monitor. i.e. Can i plug this monitor into the thunderbolt port and it run at full resolution. It is for Video Editing. Also, can i plug in another display to the other thunderbolt port and run two external displays?

    Hello Saimurai,
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.
If you want to use a 4K display with a Mac, the Mac needs to fit the requirements below.  Since your iMac is a late 2012 model, it does not support a 4K external display.
You can use 4K displays and Ultra HD TVs with these Mac computers.
MacBook Pro (Retina, Late 2013 and later)
    Mac Pro (Late 2013)
iMac (27-inch, Late 2013 and later)
    Mac mini (Late 2014)

  • LED display for Imac

I have a 09 imac with the larger dvi port I would like to hook up new Apple LED Cinema Display but dvi is smaller is there an adapter

Thanks for the info. That would be a Mid-2007 model iMac, which has a mini-DVI video output. To use the LED Cinema Display, you'll need a DVI to DisplayPort adapter, such as this one:

and a mini-DVI to DVI adapter such as this one:

  • 2nd display for G5..please help!!!

I have a huge project that I'm working on that it very PhotoShop/InDesign intensive & I need all the display room I can get. That being said I am running a Power Mac G5 that has a Radeon 9800 XT.
    Here are the specs:
    ATI Radeon 9800 XT:
    Chipset Model: ATY,R360
    Type: Display
    Bus: AGP
    Slot: SLOT-1
    VRAM (Total): 256 MB
    Vendor: ATI (0x1002)
    Device ID: 0x4e48
    Revision ID: 0x0000
    ROM Revision: 113-A14404-118
My current display is a 23" Apple, but I want to add a Princeton VL1919, that I had been using with my Mac Mini. I believe that this is a 19" LCD display.
The problem is this, I have no idea how to do this!!! The Radeon card has two ports, just like the stock G5 video card. There is a single DVI display port and a single ADC display port. Both the Apple display & the Princeton display use DVI ports. I went to my local Apple store & explained the situation but all they could offer me was a ADC to DVI converter. But they had no idea if this would work. Will this work or do I need to buy add another video card into one of the PCI slots?
Please help, I really need to free up some display real estate from all my pallates.
Any advise would be GREATLY appreciated.
    Thanks

    Hi-
    Welcome to Discussions!
All you should need is an ADC to DVI adapter:

  • Help!!! Prethunderbolt imac as a 2nd monitor for mid 2012 mac pro

Hi.  I have a 2.8 GHz Intel Core i7 imac (pre-thunderbolt) running 10.6.8 and I'd like to use it as a 2nd display for my new mid 2012 2.4 GHz 12 core Mac Pro running 10.8.2.
I bought a mini display to mini display port cable made by NewerTech.  Both computers are up and running.  I've connected the cable from the Mac Pro to the iMac, hit command f2 on the imac and nothing happens.
Does anyone have any idea why this isn't working?

    Forgot to say... help!

  • 2nd Display & iMac w/ 2 Different Sets of Content from Same iMac

Can I do this?  (How can I do this?) I'd like to connect a second display to my iMac and use the iMac to generate content (like live feeds or video content from CNN.com) to play on the second display while I "work" on the iMac and its screen. Thus, each display have its own content--but the content is generated by the one iMac.  Could I use a HD tv as the second display?
    Thanks for your guidance.
    Bill

Depends on the iMac, but some of them do support this.
Look yours up at  http://www.everymac.com/systems/apple/imac/index-imac.html  and look for the section about displays and 2nd display support under your model.
With the second display connected to the appropriate port, you use your Displays System Preferences to configure them. If you choose "mirror" both displays show the same thing. If you choose to not mirror, you can have an "extended desktop where you can place different windows on different monitors and do exactly what you want to do. AN HD TV might be usable but you have to look up what your iMac can handle in terms of pixels and resolution and compare that to your HD TV specs. You can certainly buy inexpensive monitors to use if your HD TV is compatible.

  • 2nd display connected to iMac stays black (Thunderbolt - HDMI)

    Hi everyone,
with my new iMac (purchased 2 weeks ago) I have the problem that my 2nd display will stay black after I connected it to the Thunderbolt port. The display shows the blue background for a split second, then i goes black (and stays that way). I find the following lines in the log file:

The display is an AOC e2343F2, with two HDMI and one VGA port. I am using a Mini-Displayport to HDMI cable to connect the display. This worked with my Mac Pro (from 2006, AMD Radeon HD5770) without a problem.
Is this a problem with the in 10.7.x included drivers?
    With the new Thunderbolt port?
I tried it with 10.7.2 and 10.7.3 on the iMac and the Mac Pro. It works like a charm on the Mac Pro, but not on the iMac. Do I need to buy the overpriced Apple adapter and can't use my adapter cable anymore?

Just a theory.  Looking at the log errors you showed the system cannot get the display bounds.  My theory is that the display is not able to pass the EDID (extended display identification data) through a TB port.  While your 5770 could handle it the TB can't.  Again, it's just my theory.
Another thing to check is your Displays system preferences.  See if the Display is showing in the Arrangement tab.  If so click Detect Displays and also Gather Windows to bring the second monitor's Displays preferences on to your main monitor.  If you get this far then set the appropriate resolution and refresh rate (if refresh rate is shown).
If there is no Displays Arrangement tab then the system doesn't even know the second monitor is connected.  I don't have a solution for this problem since I don't have TB.   Although the resolution is not as good you may have to try a VGA adapter for that monitor.  No guarantees that will work either of course.
