2nd ethernet card problems

Hi all, I have an G4 MDD that I'm running 10.4 server and am trying to add a 2nd ethernet card to no avail. I tried adding a Dlink and then tried a Linksys card. Upon restarting from installing the drivers, both times I got a message stating that the install was not installed properly, and therefore the mac was not reading the card. Has anyone had this issue or any ideas. I am at a complete loss. Thanks.

There was an update to PCI ethernet controllers on
www.xlr8yourmac.com yesterday.
Were there drivers? did you repair permissions? did it complain that the extension or startupitem needed to be 'fixed?'
When adding or removing a PCI card, I have never seen or had the need to reset PMU. but I have and do need to reset nvram and insure nvram is current and the device tree is rebuilt.
I've also read of complaints about D-Link, mostly routers lately.

    Hello,
I have a problem. I don't see my network adapter settings. Ethernet cable is working, I test it another PC. But this pc is not see adapter settings. That ethernet card will be lost I think. I just ask; It's operating system's problem or it's hardware problem, I do not know. How I test it?

  • Xircom pcmcia ethernet card problem.

    Hi.
I have recently received an old Dell Latitude CPx laptop. i have added to it an old Xircom RealPort CardBus Ethernet 10/100+ Modem 56 card.
after the installation, when booting, during the start-up of networking, i get the following message:
    SIOCSIFFLAGS: Cannot assign requested address
are there any known solutions to this problem?
or will i have to swap Ethernet cards?
    thank you in advance

    Hi,
A quick Google search indicates that 3Com XJAEM3336 Mac drivers were available for at least some PowerBook computers. However, it is unclear to me whether the files here are needed, appropriate or sufficient in your case. Perhaps you could look further into this.
If you cannot locate a suitable Ethernet PC Card with Mac drivers, another solution could possibly be to use a 16-bit wireless card (typically, 802.11b speed and WEP security). See, for example, this web page.

  • PCI Ethernet card problem.....please help!

Hi everyone, I intalled yesterday a PCI Ethernet card (10/100) on my PowerMac G5.
!0.5 immediately recogenize it and setted it with DHCP mode but internet looks to be slow so I chaged the configuration with static IP but with out any good result.
Internet works but very slooly while the network works great with (10/100 card and fine with integrated gigabit lan).
Someone could help me to understand while the PCI ethernet card doesn't work fine with internet? It's directly connected on a Netgear firewall routrer.....
    thanks to everyone

But it could be unsupported the second ethernet on a powermac g5?
No, the fact that it shows up is proof that it works.
What Speeds are you getting with it?...
    http://www.speakeasy.net/speedtest/
Also, in System Preferences>Network>Show>Ethernet 2>Ethernet tab>Configue:>Manually, try setting the speed lower & Duplex to Half-Duplex, restart required, test that setting.

  • K8N Platinum SLI 2nd graphics card problem

I just purchased a second SLI card MSI NX6600GT-TD128 and installed it in the first PCI-E slot moving my old MSI NX6600GT down to the second slot. The MB is in the topic header and the SLI mode chip is set to SLI. I'm running Windows XP x64 with 81.98 forceware drivers and windows recognizes the second card and everything is running in multi-GPU mode just fine.
Finally my problem with all this is the fan on the card in the second slot will not run! This is the card that I was using before and was working without issue. The second slot does not seem to kick on the fan for any reason so obviously the card starts to run really hot if I run a game using SLI. I had a card in this slot before that I believed was defective since artifacts started to appear after a couple of heat failures and I think it's because the fan never ran. Is there some setting I'm missing to get that fan going?
Bios is at v3.4 by the way. I haven't seen any of the more current bios address this issue so I haven't flashed it.

As you have tried both cards in the second slot, and both give the same results, ie fan not working, but fans work when installed on the first slot, then I would say thet the second PCI-e slot is faulty.
I would not suggest running a blower fan facing the second card as a workaround to the problem, In my rig the second card always runs a few degrees hotter than the first card. Yes you could connect the fan to the PSU, you can buy adaptor leads to do this, if thats the route you wish to follow. But if I was you, I'd contact the supplier for your mobo, and arrange to get it exchanged. I very much doubt that the extra current draw for a Fan to work is caused by the PSU as you have said that the card itself works fine in SLI mode with no artifacts appearing. And as you have not reported any other problems with your rig, it points towards the slot. Protect the investment you've made on the card, and get the mobo fixed / exchanged.
Your PSU is ok for now, but shortlist a new one for your next upgrade.
Let us know how you get on.

  • !!! Problem with 2nd graphic card !!!

Hi I have a big problem with my laptop.
I have an HP TouchSmart tm2-2000el Notebook, with Windows 7 64-bit.
2nd Graphic card is ATI RADEON HD Series 5450.
When I activate this hardware from Control Panel desktop goes black but every function are ok (sounds, illumination and all cmds).
So I must restart my computer in Safe Mode disactivate ATI Radeon HD 5450 and restart it.
Laptop run but only with Intel graphic card.
I tried to search update drivers on Amd/ATI site: amd online software reveals Ati radeon HD 5000 Series but after download Ati software tell me that is impossible to install drivers because there isn't an ATI Radeon HD 5000 Series.
So I have low graphics and CPU with 69°C because intel graphic card runs over...
I haven't found any driver for my model of laptop on HP Assistance.
    Touchsmart spec
    How can I do now?
    Thanks
    Alberto

This is the right driver for switchable graphics...do not also install the Intel only driver, you do not need both.

  • Ethernet card - is it my problem

I am trying to put OS9 on a firewire drive and am a little rusty.
It boots fine but I am not on the internet. I have an ethernet card as the original one is nonfunctional. Is this a problem.
I am using a G4 Quicksilver which connects fine on X.
I am using a router on cable modem. I have DHCP checked on the TCP control panel and have not entered a DNS address.
    Any help appreciated.
    Lewis

    Hi, Lewis -
Okay, I see - you are trying to set up OS 9 to connect via etherent to the web, rather than trying to install OS 9 on a firewire drive.
Setting the "Configure via" mode to "Use DHCP Server" will result in blanks for the addresses (IP, subnet, and router), until the server can be contacted and supplies them; on mine the Client address remains blank at all times.
Apparently the blockage is in reaching the server.
Your QuickSilver's built-in ethernet port is auto-switching, and so when using that there is no need to be particular about whether you are using a Crossover or a Patch type cable to connect to the end device. However, if the new (added) ethernet card does not have an auto-switching port, and if the router does not, then it would make a difference.
If that is the case (neither has auto-switching ports), then if the router and modem are separate items you should use a Patch type cable. But, if they are the same piece of hardware, you would then need to use a Crossover type cable.
Article #42717 - Apple products that require an Ethernet Crossover cable
    Ethernet Cable: Color Coding Standard
    Other things -
AppleTalk can sometimes interfere with gaining a sucessful ethernet connection. In those cases, just turning AppleTalk off may not be sufficient - it can be quite tenacious about hanging onto a port. The solution for that is to set AppleTalk to use a different port. You can make that setting in the AppleTalk control panel.
Be sure that both the extensions named Shared Library Manager and Shared Library Manager PPC are enabled in Extensions Manager. Ditto all extensions whose names includes Open Transport or OpenTpt. If you need to enable anything, restart to make the change active.
Try throwing away the file ASLM Preferences (it can be found in the Preferences folder in System Folder). Empty the Trash, then restart. ("ASLM" = "Apple Shared Library Manager")

  • A20m Trouble with Ethernet Card and the Internet

I have a A20m Thinkpad that is not connecting to the internet. At first my problem was that I did not have an ethernet card as detailed on this forum post.
    http://forums.lenovo.com/t5/Legacy-ThinkPads-A-I-V-300-600/A20m-Network-Controller-Driver/m-p/219725...
Thus I bought this ethernet card and installed it.
    http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=190223756432
From what I can tell I installed it correctly and then I preceded to install the drivers for this card. The ones located on this page.
    http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?lndocid=MIGR-4K4PWT
It seemed to work well and the controller shows up in hardware devices.
That went well, but I still cannot connect to the internet. I thought it might be the card itself but after running the 3Com NIC Utilities that came with the drivers it said that there were no problems with the card.
Also of note I have noticed that there are no lights on the port where the ethernet cable is plugged in. I am not sure if there should be. Any help people could offer would be most appreciated. This Thinkpad is running windows XP.

Called them up today and basically I got them to pay for shipping this time. They told me they did not have any more new ones of my model and are not willing to ship me a suitable new replacement model after all this trouble and just gonna keep on shipping me refurbished until we find one that works (the heck? ...his quotes). So basically by the time I get my 2nd refurbished replacement (and assume it actually works this time) my computer would been down for over 2 months.
I am currently saving up for a 9800gt from evga since they are budget priced now (heard they actually have a good customer service and good quality cards) and based on my experience with MSI I can't recommend their products to anyone now sadly.
Hopefully MSI will send me out a tested a verified to word refurbished card this time.

  • Ethernet card no longer showing in ifconfig [solved]

    Hey,
Normally I don't have any problems with my networking, but this morning my wireless decided not to work. I haven't made made any changes in the past couple of days, so unsure what has caused it. Last Syu was on Thursday and every day including up until last night was fine.
So spent a while trying stuff out and stressing my tiny little brain for ideas, quick version is I did this:
    netcfg: said interface didn't exist.
ifconfig: didn't list the interface (wireless is usually eth1)
lsmod: confirmed the module (ipw2200) was loaded
lspci: confirmed the card was there
After copying the output of the above commands plus the obligatory rc.conf onto usb to move to this machine (and just before pushing <submit> on a much larger post than this :-) I decided to check the mac address listed in ifconfig with what is on the sticker under my machine. Voila! My wireless has actually moved to eth0. OK, that's that solved. (Wish I checked that first though...)
But that means that the reason that my wireless card is now eth0 instead of eth1 is because my old-skool wired ethernet card is no longer there to be numero 0. Why isn't it working? lsmod shows that the tg3 module is loading (it's an Intel card with Broadcom chipset in a Thinkpad T43) , but it no longer shows up in ifconfig. lspci is not showing it (see below), only the wireless card comes up. Does this mean the hardware is borken? What else can I do to check the card?

OK, so it is at eth1 now, that makes sense since I put ipw2200 right at the beginning and tg3 right at the end of the MODULES array in rc.conf to avoid the system getting crossed up while trying load them too close together. Thanks B, so at least we know something is happening at boot time.
Btw, my assumption is that ifconfig shows hardware once it is loaded correctly, is that right? But apart from the modules, what else do I need to do to get it showing up in ifconfig?

  • Ethernet Card Not being Detected on my iMac 27Inch (Mid2010)

    Hello,
I have only had my iMac for a couple of months, and it appears to have developed a fault. I have a network router, and a network cable is plugged in however, the Network Panel keeps reading as "Cable: Unplugged". It is not, i can assure you.
When I got into the About This Mac > System Profiler, it has "This computer does not appear to have any PCI Ethernet cards installed." under the Ethernet Card option
I'm currently on Wireless (very skechty), and that also keeps dropping out even though the router is less a foot from the iMac.
    Any Solutions or Advise please?
    Thanks Phill C

I have the same problem after I installed LION on my imac 27" (Late 2010). It was working for few days and then after I restarted my computer my network card just went dead. Since I have several partitions I can boot back to Snow Leopard and it shows me ethernet just fine. So it means that LION has bugs and many bugs from what I can tell. It is wide spread problem and not sure if apple is doing anything about htis.

  • Ethernet card issue...can't get rid of self-assigned IP

    Hi folks,
I am using an circa 2005 iMac G5 PPC desktop with 10.5.8. I am trying to connect the iMac to my Time Capsule via ethernet cable, but seem to be having problems with my ethernet card. When I plug into the TC ethernet port, the TC drive, does not mount and I cannot access the worldwide web.
When I go to System Preferences --> Networking, the tab on the left for ethernet connection shows a green dot, says "self-assigned IP" and the status says "connected" PRIOR TO CONNECTING THE ETHERNET CABLE TO THE TIME CAPSULE. It shows a "self-assigned" IP (DHCP selected) of 169.254.69.249, even though I know my TC is 10.0.1.1.  Turning the ethernet off then back on, renewing the DHCP lease, nothing seems to be able to make this 169 IP address go away. The wireless connection to the TC is just fine... everything does what it should, I just can't get the ethernet cable connection to work.
Out of curriosity, I went to the System Profiler, and on the network tab it shows ethernet IPv4 169.254.69.249 (name en0).
I know it's not the Time Capsule, as I connected my laptop to it just fine via ethernet. The TC was IP 10.0.1.1 and it assigned 10.0.1.5 to my laptop (I have a variety of devices on my network), and I was able to transfer data and access the internet with no issues whatsoever.
I live in an 32 story apartment with a built-in ethernet network and ISP included in my rent. It's pretty nice, high speed. I connect from the wall to the Time Capsule via ethernet (circle dot connection port, so I know I have the right port), and then wirelessly out to a couple of laptops, a couple of Airport Express, and of course my desktop.
Bottom line, I think the ethernet card on iMac G5 desktop has gone bad: A few questions:
    (1) Any ideas what may be wrong? Has anyone seen this self-assigned IP thing that won't go away?
    (2) Any ideas how to fix it?
    (3) How much will it cost? It may be time to replace my 6-year old desk top computer.
    Thanks, Andy

I've swapped out several cables still with no luck, and the current cable definitely has 8 pins and worked with my laptop, so I'm confident it's not the cable. Also, the Time Capsule seems to be OK, because it too worked with my laptop using the same port. The only variable that doesn't seem to be cooperating is my desktop computer.
Also, I have tried to manually assign an IP consistent with the network & appropriate subnet mask. It seems to take the IP address manually, but still I can't get internet access, and can't ping the Time Capsule in network utility either.
Finally, when I connect the desktop directly to my wall outlet, taking the router out of the equation entirely, network diagnostics shows ethernet failure...
Does that sound like a bad ethernet card?
What does it take to replace an ethernet card in an iMac G5?
    Cheers, Thanks, Andy

  • Is there a PCMCIA Ethernet card for Powerbook G4 OS X 10.4.8 ?

My ethernet port on my Powerbook G4 is damaged and can no longer be used. I looked into getting it repaired but that apparently requires replacing the entire system board at considerable cost. Rather than take that route, I was hoping to find a PCMCIA card with an Ethernet port but I cannot seem to find any that will work with OS X 10.4.x.
Does anyone know of such a card ?
    Thanks for your help !

    How old is your Powerbook?
A Mac older than 4 years old may need its clock battery replaced by an authorized service center. The clock battery dying can cause certain ports to malfunction as well. If it is under 4 years old and no surges broke the port, try zapping your PRAM, it may solve the problem once and for all:
    http://www.info.apple.com/kbnum/n2238
If it is under AppleCare, there may be no cost at all. Any Mac under a year old is under AppleCare.
Also replacing the system board can be cheaper than from Apple directly if you take it to one of these places:
    http://www.dttservice.com/
    http://www.powerbookresq.com/
    http://www.microdocusa.com/
    http://www.macspecialist.com/
    http://www.techrestore.com/
In addition, if the port got burnt out by a storm surge or power surge your home/apartment insurance or credit card company you purchased the machine with may pay for the damage. So check each of those sources if you can't find an appropriate card.
http://www.xlr8yourmac.com/ lists a variety of upgrade cards in their database, and may have some ethernet cards you can look at.
By the way, the fact that port is broke suggests the possibility that any other system difficulty you are having may also be related to logicboard issue in anycase, so replacing the logicboard is a good idea if you are noticing other issues.

  • I need to tell Print services to use the 2nd ethernet port

I need to tell Print services to use the 2nd ethernet port
Thanks in advance to anyone who can shed some light. My research has led me to a dead-end so far. Running 10.3.9 on my server. XServe Dual 2.3
I want to have File services and the various other duties pushed through one ethernet port, and print services on the other. I know there is probably a config file to make one simple edit, but I can not find it, or perhaps a "defaults" type command.
Also, where is this "command-line administration guide" that I keep running across on Apple's support?
    Thanks in advance.
    Matt

Similar issue here too. Is it the subnet? Basically, I'm having a problem printing to an AirportExpress-served printer. Our network looks like this:
    (From Outside...>>>...to Inside)
    (Public IP) DSL Modem
    ...(10.0.0.x) Airport Express -- HP DesignJet 100 USB -- Airtunes/stereo
    ...(10.0.0.x) NetGear Wireless Router
    ...(10.0.0.x nic 0) Mac OS X Server (192.168.0.x nic1)
    ......(192.168.0.x) Mac OS X client
    ......(192.168.0.x) Mac OS X client
    ......(192.168.0.x) Mac OS X client
The printer driver does not appear to be able to do IP printing, it assumes a direct USB connection. We can setup the OS X Server with the printer served by the Airport Express, as it is found via Bonjour, and then we share its queue via Server Admin. The problem is that the LAN clients cannot print to this server queue. The printer gets stopped at the server.
If we turn OFF the OS X Server's firewall, printing works from both the clients and obviously from the Server. I think my question is this: what ports or services need to be turned on in order for the clients to print? There is no clear checkbox for "Bonjour Printer Sharing", and I'm curious what ports this would open, and if it would be safe. I thought it would work because we're pushing the print job up through the firewall, but apparently some response needs to come back through the firewall, and that's what's not happening.
And to tack onto this, how could we also push iTunes to the Airport Express from the Clients? Assuming the music goes over different ports than the print jobs. ?
Thanks in advance for any help.
