2nd Gen 10G iPod lost songs & report 429467295 GB available

My setup :
2nd Generation 10G iPod (brought in Sept 2002)
Windows format FAT32
Upgraded to version 1.5 with Windows iPod updater dated 17.11.2005
Background :
For the past 2 years, the iPod may sometimes report no songs. But after several reset (i.e. holding menu and play keys together), the songs will suddenly re-appear. The situation get worse recently and repeatitive reset now cannot bring back the songs.
Symptoms :
1. Reset will only go back to 'choose language menu'
2. "About" menu report :
- Songs : 0
- Capacity/Available : 429467295 GB (yes, it said GB)
- Version : 1.5
- S/N : [correct s/n]
- Format : Unknown
Action taken :
1. I did complete reformat in Windows 2000 to FAT32
2. Run the 17.11.05 updater with PC for version 1.5 (Restore option used)
3. Then connect the freshly restored empty version 1.5 FAT32 iPod to iBook
4. iTunes 6.0.2 at iBook works perfect with the iPod
5. Updating (songs) to iPod runs smoothly and observed all songs transferred to iPod successfuly (about 7 GB of songs)
6. iTunes automatically disconnect the iPod after completed updating (songs)
7. Unplug the iPod from iBook --> Apple logo appeared on iPod ---> Boom ... No songs ... symptoms above appeared !!!!
Additional info :
I tried to reformat the iPod with iBook and used appropriate Mac version updater to restore also into Mac version 1.5 iPod and the above symptom will sometimes appears also, normally if after I drained the battery ....
i.e. After drained the battery, then after rechage of the iPod it will also report no songs and capapcity/available 429467295 GB .....
Repeated reset used to be able to get the iPod get back on track but nowadays this no longer works .....
P.S. I am sure the songs are actually not deleted ....

I don't think mine would be an isolated case.....
I searched the web but similar question/report is very rare ...
But I managed to find the following one with exactly same symptom as mine ....

Find an app to which you can save the attachment and which also uses file sharing

  • Why can't i load 4.3.5 onto my older (2nd gen?) iPod touch?

Why can't I load iOS 4.3.5 onto my older (2nd gen?) iPod touch?  I think it's second generation.  The current software on it is 3.1.3.  When I try to add newer apps, iTunes tells me: "The app [insert name] was not installed because it requires a newer version of iPod software."   I get that maybe the OS on the iPod is old, but then I go to "Summary" in iTunes it tells me the software is up to date and iTunes will automatically check again.  Where can I get the newer software?  Will it run on my older Touch?  And how do I know what generation my Touch is?  I got it in the fall of 2008.  Thanks for your patience with a Mac lover who's not very tech savvy.

"Why can't I load iOS 4.3.5 onto my older (2nd gen?) iPod touch? "
Beacuse it does not support the new software.  2nd gen can only go to 4.2.1

If you have a second gen, then you should be able to get 4.2.1.  What computer OS do you have?  What version of Itunes?

  • I have 2nd gen. Ipod shuffle I restored it and now when i am trying to sync it, it is showing that some files are missing and it is not getting sync what should i do???

Master reset...? Your device was jailbroken prior to you purchasing the device. The only symbol you should see on reboot is an Apple symbol. Download redsnow... google it! Download the latest version and your IPSW (ipod restore firmware) it has to be the correct version. And the "just boot tethered" should fix your device.
But that's only if you didnt back the device up. If you don't care about any of the data on the ipod then you can simply open itunes navigate to the device and click the restore button. This will restore the ipod firmware and install a fresh copy. Good luck let me know if you have any problems.

  • Ipod Shuffle (2nd Gen) Does Not Recognize Songs

My Ipod Shuffle (2nd Gen) does not recognize the songs that are loaded on it. When I turn it on after a full charge the green light stays on for about 5 seconds then turns off. When I press play, the colors flash orange and green indicating there are no songs loaded. I've tried all the recommendations and also seen that people with similar problems have not been able to resolve the problem as well. I've seen some cases where the use of the Ipod Rest Utility is recommended however I have Vista on my PC and there is no version available for that o/s that I could find. Does anyone have any other suggestions. Thanks.
Ipod Shuffle (2nd Gen)   Windows Vista

I changed the iPod to Disk mode and it just blinks orange while it is connected to the PC. It says that it is synched on the PC screen but I thought the blinking orange light means that it isn't. I took it back out of disk mode. The original problem still exists...when I turn it on, the green light stays lit for 5 seconds then there's no light at all....when I press play the lights alternate orange and green indicating no music is loaded which is wrong since it shows all my songs that are loaded when it is connected to my PC. What a mess.

  • Charging iPod nano (2nd gen) with iPod mini adaptor

    Hey
I just bought my iPod nano 2nd gen, and I realized that there is no wall charger for it. Therefore I am wondering, if I can use the wallcharger for my old iPod mini?
I that cannot be done, I would like some alternatives, since I would like to bring my iPod on vacation, and therefore I need more than 24 hours of battery life.
    Best regards

  • How do I transfer contacts from iPod touch 2nd gen to iPod touch 5th gen

I just got a new iPod touch (5th gen) and can't figure out how to transfer the contacts from my old iPod touch (2nd gen). I was able to sync my contacts in the 2nd gen iPod touch with my Google account when it was connected to iTunes, but I don't see that option now with the 5th gen touch. It only looks like it can sync to iCloud.

  • New iPod Touch - restore from backup of (2nd gen?) iPod touch

Am buying the new iPod Touch w/additional features - camera, hi-res, quicker processor, etc. - than the (2nd) Gen Touch which I bot June 2009. Run on iMac, all software currently "up-to-date" - want to just transfer over all of my apps, music, data (within iPod apps), MobileMe links, Mail links, etc - from old device to new device. I'd also like to "wipe" the old device in order to give it to someone else without giving them access to my information. Anyone out there give me a "link" to get instructions on this? When I do my own searches in "support manuals" - I get a ton of non-applicable links....

  • 2nd gen 8G iPod Touch, upgraded to iOS4, now wifi doesn't work

I have a 2nd gen iPod Touch and I upgraded to iOs4 a few hours ago, and now my wifi won't connect no matter what I do. I've restored the whole iPod twice. I've renewed the lease on the wifi connection for our home network. I've done just about everything that I have found on the internet to try and help and nothing works.
I select our home network and type in the password and it "connects". But if I try to do anything online, it immediately says that it's not connected. It works otherwise, but I mainly use it for apps, and most of those apps need an internet connection. It's starting to seem like a very pretty paperweight.
I've seen that others have had similar problems, but has anyone found a fix for this yet? I can't afford to just go out and buy a new iPod, especially since the new operating system is what made it break

And I've done all of the steps on this link - http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1398

  • Can't decide between the 1st gen and 2nd gen 32GB iPod Touch, please help.

I would like to buy a 32GB iPod Touch, the problem is that i can't decide whether i should buy a 1st gen or 2nd gen.
Obviously 2nd gen is "better" but is it worth the extra $$$?
Best Buy has the 1st gen for $310 and the 2nd gen is $400, that's $90 difference.
    Any advice would be appreciated.

    that's $90 difference.
Actually, it's only $80 because the 1G touch will come with the old 1.x software and it cost $10 to upgrade to 2.x software.

There are a couple of methods for using more than one iPod on a single computer. Method one is to have two Mac or Windows user accounts which by definition would give you two completely separate libraries. Method two is to set your preferences so that either one or both iPods get updated with only certain playlists within one library. Have a look at this article and see what you think and go for whichever you feel suits your needs best: How To Use Multiple iPods with One Computer
Another option when using a single library is to set one or both of the iPods to manual update: Managing content manually on iPod

  • (2nd gen?) ipod nano, 4gigs, Out of memory?

My daughters ipod says it has used 3.63 gigs for songs, but she only has 115 songs on it. The specs on line say it should hold alot more. Do I have to do something to get the additional space/songs on it?
    Thanks, I am a rookie.

The advertised song capacity of any of the iPods is a calculation based on 4 minute songs encoded in AAC format at a bit rate of 128 kbps. Longer songs and songs encoded at a higher bitrate or in uncompressed formats take up more space. If for example you imported full size, uncompressed CD files (AIFF format) or WAV files you would get significantly fewer on. What format are the songs you have imported? Go to iTunes and right click on one of your songs, choose Get Info>Summary and look at "Kind" to see what format you are using: iTunes: About import settings and hard disk space
If you have imported uncompressed files they can be converted in iTunes. You can use iTunes to convert any copy protection free songs in your library another format. When you convert a song in iTunes it will be converted to the format that you have set to import your CDs in. Converting creates a second copy of the song in the format you have chosen which gives you the opportunity to either keep or delete the original. If you are using iTunes 8 go to Edit>Preferences>General and click on Import Settings, change your option to AAC for example. Go back to your library and highlight the songs you want to convert and go to the Advanced menu at the top of your iTunes window and choose "Create AAC version": iTunes: How to convert a song to a different file format

  • New 80gig 5th Gen - had a 4th Gen col ipod - transfer songs??

I have just received my new 80gb ipod and I am worried about the following:
I have itunes on my machine linked to my previous Ipod photo and I have it synced to an external HD for the music library.
All I want to do is tell the new ipod to take over fomr now on and see he external HD and pull hte music over? I'm worried I will lose everything?
Whats the best proceedure for this?
    Thanks for any tips

This might seem a daft question and I apologise in advance but have you ever added these songs to the iTunes library on the new computer as well as pointing iTunes to the external drive? The reason I ask is that when you consolidate, any songs in the iTunes Library that are not in the iTunes Music Folder are copied to the Music Folder and the Library is updated to point at those new files. Files already in the iTunes Music Folder have no changes made to them. That's all consolidating does. If you have simply connected an external drive but not actually added the songs to the library that may be your problem. To add to the library without copying songs to the iTunes Music folder make sure that in the iTunes Preferences>Advanced>General, you untick the box "Copy files to to iTunes Music folder when adding to library: About the Add to Library, Import and Convert functions
