2nd Gen 8Gb Nano Issues w/ WinXP...

Hey all, I have a relatively major problem...
I just bought a pair of 8Gb Nanos (one for the SO and myself), and mine is working totally fine, but the other one is basically all whacked out when trying to connect to the 'puter... It still has all of the music on it, but I can't get it to recognize in XP or iTunes...
And, for the record, I have tried most of the easy fixes (ir reset, set to disk mode, etc) but I still have had no luck.
Any ideas? Or should I generate an Apple Service Order now...?
Thanks in advance,
A

If you are using them both on the same computer it's possible that the computer is confusing the drive letter for the ipods. http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93499
Check this link also as it lists several reasons that this may be going on.

  • Vista/7.5/HP Pavilion/2nd gen 8gb nano combo apparently doesn't work

There's something about this combo that simply refused to play nicely together. I'm trying to make the laptop (said HP Pavilion) my primary computer, since I've gotten rather tired of the Pentium III dinosaur it's replacing, and this would include using it for my iTunes setup. Problem is that EVERY FREAKING TIME I connect the iPod, iTunes complains about needing to restore the iPod. Then it just keeps complaining that it's found an iPod that needs to be restored. AFTER I've restored the iPod!!!
For now, I'm giving up on 7.5 and rolling back to 7.3. I'm hoping that helps. Does anyone have any idea what is going on, whether it's fixable, and whether 7.5 can actually be used with Vista and a 2nd gen nano without screwing the whole thing up beyond recognition? (grumbling and cursing as I restore my poor iPod from the aforementioned dinosaur)

Another update: I stumbled across a weird but effective workaround:
    Connect iPod
Acknowledge message about iPod needing to be restored
    DO NOT hit Restore button
    Reboot computer with iPod attached
Once computer is booted, bring up iTunes
    iPod happily synchronizes as normal.
I have no idea why this works, but it does.

  • IPod touch 2nd Gen 8gb will no longer Sync photos.

all the posts I could find that were similar had to do with ipods that were jailbroken and on Windows.
I have iTunes 10.1, iPhoto 6.0.6. running on OSX 10.6.5
    iPod Touch 2nd Gen 8GB OS 4.2.1
The Problem: Since I got 4.0 and later, I have not been able to sync photos from iphoto. itunes says that it is, the bar moves and says all photos have been synced, all the photos I want synced are checked in itunes and still nothing when I check them on my ipod. iPod says no photos in album. I tried deleting the ipod cache on my mac, nothing. I tried syncing to a single file folder with the same photos, same. I tried exporting all the photos I wanted synced to a separate folder to jpg and smaller resolution, same result, no photos on ipod.
Note. the photos used to sync up until 4.0
I have also tried starting from scratch and putting it back to factory defaults then going from backup. Same result.
I have tried rebooting both iMac and iPod, same thing.
and I hate how I can't just email apple and tell them the problem.
Any and all help would be greatly appreciated. I just can't seem to find anyone else with the same problem.
Thanks in advance for the possible help.

I dont get an error message at all. itunes just does its normal business when syncing and says its synced, but no photos. I have never tried mobile me, so I dont think my problem is connected. I dont have $300 to get a new ipod. this makes me sad.

  • Selling iPod Touch 2nd Gen 8GB

Hi i was wondering if apple will buy an old ipod touch that i have 2nd gen 8GB and does anyone know about how much apple would offer

    No.
Apple sells ipods, they do not buy them.
They have a recycle program. They will give a 10% discount on a new ipod if you bring in an old one for recycling.

  • Help!! ipod touch 2nd gen (8gb) is running by itself!

    I just got a ipod touch 2nd gen (8gb) from a friend.
This ipod has some problem.. it is running by itself! When I on it, and for example go to Settings, it will just randomly go to a next selection as if responding to my selection but I never touch anything.. I've tried to reset to factory settings and it's updated to ios4.2.1 but still no use..
    anyone can help? greatly appreciated!!

When restoring an iPod to factory setting fails to resolve a problem that indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.

  • Electric Shock from refurb. 2nd Gen. Nano

I have had a refurbished 2nd Gen. iPod Nano for 2 days. I bought it from the Apple site. Today, I brought it to work and while listening to it, I set it down on a wooden/plywood shelf that houses mini-disc players. Within moments, I heard crackling sounds in my earbuds and then received some slight shocks in my ears. Is this normal when an iPod comes close to other electronics?

No. And it's difficult to see how this could happen - the voltage inside the iPod is only about 5 volts and you wouldn't feel that even if you touched it directly. It's more likely that something is causing the amplifier to make crackling noises and these were loud enough to make you feel as if you'd received a shock. But you could ask an electrician to look at it and check it with a meter.

  • Recording live music on 2nd Gen ipod nano

    Greetings-
I recently purchased a 2nd Gen ipod nano 4 gig. I'd like to be able to record live music, then load it in my computer. I obviously don't expect CD quality, just decent enough playback to be able to replay the music on my computer (using the Amazing Slow Downer, for example) to learn new tunes.
I would typically take it to an Irish music session, record the musicians then go home and try and learn the tunes.
    Suggestions for a microphone?
Is this done through the memo function of the ipod?
If y'all have experience doing that kind of thing, I'd appreciate your kind advice.

As Lougoose and others have said, the "Music Videos" folder is simply there by default in the iTunes software, and does not have to do with your nano having the ability to play videos or not.
If you'd like to let Apple know about this, as a possible feature in a future update of iTunes or iPod firmware, write your suggestion on these Feedback forms:

  • 2nd Gen 8GB audio lineout misaligned

I originally had a 4GB iPod nano and accessorized with several aftermarket Belkin products: portable speakers, car stereo attachment, etc. Everything worked together well, and all was good.
After shedding some tears when I lost the nano, I took the opportunity to upgrade to the new 8GB nano. To my dismay, the audio lineout plug on the new 8GB was not in the exact same position as the old nano and the accessories were unable to plug into the iPod due to the misalignment. My accessories plug not only into the audio jack but also into the data/power jack, and the distance between these two connections on the iPod is the not the same as my previous version.
Is this a problem for other people too? I can't imagine I'm doing anything wrong when trying to simply attach an accessory, but that's always a possibility.
Toshiba Satellite Windows XP Pro Core 2 Duo 2GHz

Depending on the type of retailer you are referring to it is possible that when it comes right down to it, most of these retailers do not know the ends and outs of the new products as would an Apple store employee. It's a pain for customers that are upgrading from the first gen to the new one and had a lot of the accessories that utilized both the dock port and headphone jack but a few red lights that raise questions about compatibility come up with the fact that measurement wise the 2nd gen is a little "smaller". There is also an article within the Apple Articles that points out that not all 1st gen accessories are compatiable. Also, considering the fact that Apple never once advertised the new 2nd gen nano as being backwards compatiable with the 1st gen accessories it isn't exactly fair to decide that it's "dumb". A little research on the Apple online store would have shown that there are many of the 1st gen accessories that just weren't intended for the 2nd gen since when you look up these items specifically for the 2nd gen the list is a bit shorter than for the 1st gen. As for cases, there actually is a number of the cases that actually fit the 2nd gen that were originally released for the 1st as I am still utilizing my original case and it is listed as compatiable for both the 1st gen and the 2nd. It just depends. As time passes you will see more products available for the 2nd gen. The number has actually increased since the original release in September. It ***** but it's just one of those situations where you end up having to shell out more money for things you may really want to replace the items you already have that no longer work for your new iPod. I have noticed though that a lot of people are selling their 1st gen accessories on places like Ebay to recoup some of their money since a lot of people jumped on the lowered prices of the 1st gens when the 2nd was released and it seems that a lot of stores are running out of those accessories....that may be an option for you in that vain (assuming you had any of the old stuff that you cant use now).
Sorry so long lol. Got a bit carried away!

  • Windows 7 64 bit, iPod touch 2nd gen, iTunes sync issue

I have Windows 7 64 bit Home Premium and am frustrated to death. I have spent days wiping out my iPod trying something different an only to start all over again. I am not a n00b to computers and only ask because I only find a trail of tears and none of the problems I see look specifically like mine.
I have been following this issue since Feb 2010 and notice reports that are sort of similar back to Jan of 2009. Anyway here is my problem.
iTunes will recognize my iPod touch 2nd Gen. iTunes will "sync" apps and data. iTunes will not sync movies, music, books, or software upgrades.
I get an error code that changes depending on what I am trying and seems to lead to no where. I can't honestly remember the code anymore.
I can sync with this same computer using Windows XP 32 Pro win a VirtualBox VM, but can not do it directly from within Windows 7. So hardware and drivers are not the issue. I reinstalled iTunes with a Vista 64 bit install that I found online which appeared to work temporarily then ultimately I ended up back where I started.
I actually switched to Windows (from linux) because I got tired of the VirtualBox method. Quite ironic that I am still facing the same issue.
On top of the not being able to sync properly from Windows 7 64 bit. Everytime I try I have to put in hours of work to get my Ipod back to working order as iTunes only allows you to sync with one computer and is slower that snail poop in January. In order to try again I have to be willing to commit to the problems that I am most likely to encounter.
    So my questions are
    1. Does anyone have a clue why Apple has not fixed this issue? or is there a solution I don't know about?
    2. Is there an easier way to attempt a fix that does not require me to re organize my 70+ apps on my iPod?
P.S. I do not have an intel based chipset as that seems to have been an issue for others. I have
    ASUS M2V VIA K8T890 AM2 Mother Board
    CPU AMD|A64 X2 4600+
    VGA EVGA GF 7300GT
Have tried direct to MB USB and through powered Hub

Are you sure that you downloaded the 64 bit version and not the 32 bit version?  I would delete the download and try again.  You also might want to look at the iTunes forum since youu have an iTunes problem and not an iPod problem.

  • Restoring 2nd Gen Ipod Nano?

hey guys, iv just had a real big problem with my ipod nano (2nd gen)...
well basically i was wanting to sync some more music from my itunes onto it and it just kept disconnecting itself for some stupid reason, and after several times it said something like my ipod wasnt readable, and i think i accidently put my ipod into factory mode and iv been attemting to try to restore it back to normal and iv tried everything but i cant seem to find anything that works. iv even tried putting it into disk mode but i dont know how that works, and every time i try to restore it it keeps coming up with this error code...and now i cant even load my music back on it now, im just wondering if anyone can help and knows how to restore an ipod nano like mine and knows how i can get it back to normal so i cant put my music back onto it?? Thankyouu

If iTunes is recognising your iPod you should have no errors when you go to restore it. Restoring your iPod will erase the hard drive, reload the software and put it back to default settings. Once the restore is complete follow the on screen instructions and it should connect to iTunes and give you a prompt to automatically update your library onto the fresh installation: Restoring iPod to Factory Settings with iTunes 7

  • 2nd Gen iPod Nano won't sync

My stepson's 2nd Gen iPod just won't sync.  It behaves normally in iTunes and doesn't cause any problems or symptoms with the computer.  Made a playlist and selected it to only sync to that playlist, shows that everything is fine, click sync- nothing happens.  I went through every step on the website's troubleshooting pages- reset the iPod, restarted the computer, tried it on different USB ports, and reinstalled the latest version of iTunes.  I tried to restore it and it went through the download process untill the end when a window popped up saying "error downloading software".  I'm at a loss and feel bad for him because this was a Christmas present from a family member and now it won't work : /  Any more experienced users have any ideas?  I called tech support and they said they couldn't help me unless I paid the $29.99 fee because this iPod is too old for a warranty >: /

You get this problem when the option 'Sync Music - Selected playlists' is being used to sync your iPod. If the playlist selected is deleted from iTunes the iPod no longer has a location to sync from and you get an error. (Syncing selected playlists by the way is a useful setting to use when the iPod is smaller than the iTunes library). However you can make a new one or make use of an existing one.
Open iTunes and create a playlist to update your iPod from, call it -My iPod for example (the dash will position it at the top of the playlists in Sources). You can make it a smart playlist that picks the songs for you or just a normal one and drag whatever content you want to have into the playlist. If you are making a smart playlist limit it to just less than the size of your iPod (for example 3700MB for a 4G iPod Nano. Now connect your iPod and when it appears in the Source list click on the iPod icon to bring up the preference tabs in the main pane. Go to the Music tab and choose Sync Music and the Selected playlists radio button. Choose the playlist you just made from the selection and click Apply. You can also sync from any existing playlists by choosing the same setting, you just need to make sure that the size of the playlists don't exceed the capacity of your iPod:
lost libraryHow to create a Smart Playlist with iTunes
    Syncing Music to iPod
To make a random playlist go to File>New Smart Playlist.
    Uncheck "Match the following rule"
Check "Limit to" put "3700" in the number box, choose "MB" from the first list box, choose "Random" from the next list box. Check "Live Updating"
When you want to change the selection in the smart playlist just delete everything in it and it will add a new selection. When you want to change the normal playlist just delete out what you don't want and drag in a new selection.

  • 2nd Gen. iPod nano keeps disconnecting

My 2nd Generation iPod Nano keeps disconnecting.  It was working fine until I tried to delete everything, which did not work, so I resorted to clicking "Restore".  The problem is that I am trying to sync podcasts only I keep getting a message:  "The iPod...cannot be synced.  The required file cannot be found".  This is very bizzare because I also realized the iPod Nano itself keeps giving a message also:  "OK to disconnect" and goes into sleep mode.  I am not sure if this is a settings issue...Help!
    Note:  The iPod is charged.

Ummm.. didn't you read the box or Apple website BEFORE you bought it?
You've made it through almost 3 large OS updates without complaint so I don't see how Apple wronged you.
This is your fault for not looking into this beforehand. There were major changes in OSX starting with X.3 that made it so that some software would not be compatible with the operating systems below that version. iTunes is such software.
    * Your nano needs iTunes 7 to sync.
    * iTunes 7 does not work is OS9, OSX.1, or OSX.2
Just like it won't work in Windows 98 or ME
An operating system made FOUR and a HALF YEARS ago can not be expected to support into perpetuity hardware that did not exist back then.
Your laptop works just fine, you have no problems upgrading cheaply to X.3 (you don't NEED X.4 despite your claims) and you can cut the pathetic comparisons to how "simple" windows makes it with anything.
He11, their own Zune isn't even supported by Vista.
I for one am glad the OS is updated in approximately 12-18 month intervals instead of allowing it to languish on its laurels. The gains in features are a good thing not a curse. If you want them people are free to upgrade at their discretion. No one is forcing you to upgrade the OS and no one made you buy the Nano. The requirements are all over the place and it was your job to look into it before buying it.

  • Re: iPod 2nd gen wifi connectivity issue

my 2nd gen ipod touch is not displaying any available network choices, not even locked ones around me. I know this is an ipod issue because my iphone is displaying all choices. Please help, thx.

I think I may be on to something. I have stopped getting the faulty signals when I changed my wireless channel to another one. However I then started disconnecting and reconnecting to my network quite a bit, sometimes asking for our password again. What I noticed is in June I added security to our old router and the problems began there but not as bad as they were yesterday. When we got the new router I added security right away in the form of WPA2-PSK AES only. I just now changed that to WPA-PSK TKIP + WPA2-PSK AES and it seems to have stopped disconnecting and reconnecting three times a minute. I will play around with it more and report back, I will say I've noticed a slight drop in signal but we'll see how it all works out. If anyone knows more about this than me please let me know.
    Thanks,
    QK
