2nd gen freezing, loosing music

My 2nd gen Ipod has been freezing, then when I do the "press select/menu" to restart, all my music disappears and I have to upload it all again. I've had it for around 8 years or so now (got it new), is it time for a new one or can this be fixed?

I recently bought a 2nd gen shuffle and I've
connected to my pc and uploaded music without any
problems.
However, while I'm using the shuffle, for some
unknown reason - and completely at random, the
shuffle seems to lose certain tracks, not all - just
some.
I have loaded nearly 2 hours previously, but after
this disappearing trick has finished, there's usually
only about half a dozen or so left.
I have re-loaded a couple of times but I was
wondering if this is a common/known error and as
such, whether there is a workaround or fix, or should
I just take it back and get another one?
Any help would be very much appreciated.
Are the "disappearing" tracks mucis that was purchased from the iTunes Music Store... in other words, what's their provenance?

  • Ipod shuffle 2nd gen wont sync music it always gets stuck on a different song everytime and the puts the ipod into recovery mode!

    Hey guys
My dads 2nd gen ipod shuffle will not sync music. I try to sync the music by autofill and manually and it freezes for a long time, and then says the device cannot be found. It then puts the ipod shuffle into recovery mode and i then have to restore the ipod and loose all the data.

The shuffle may be losing its data connection to the computer during the time it is syncing.  If you have not already, you should shut down (power off) the computer.  Disconnect all USB devices (except for standard keyboard and mouse if normally used), including hubs.  Do this to Reset the shuffle
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1655
Start up the computer, run iTunes, and connect the shuffle to a direct USB port.  Try repeating the action that is causing the error.
If that does not help, select the shuffle in iTunes and go to its Settings screen.  There is a checkbox for Enable disk use.  If that setting is checked, uncheck it.  If it is not checked, check it.  Basically, reverse the current setting.  Apply the change.  See of that makes any difference.

  • I am moving my iTunes to a new laptop (from XP to 7). I can sync my iPod Classic but my iPod Touch 2nd Gen freezes.

    Hi,
I have an old laptop running WinXP Home SP3 with iTunes 10.2x installed. I sync my old iPod Classic120GB and a newer iPod Touch 2nd Gen 8GB. I recently bought a new laptop with Windows 7 Pro. I am moving everything to the new one. I did not have a problem with the old iPod. But when I tried to sync the Touch it just freezes while trying to backup the existing contents. I have read a few support docs and have tried some of them where I have to tweak some of Window's Admin tools. I have also uninstallled and installed iTunes. There are so many things to try in the troubleshooting steps that I can't really figure out which is which. I also can't backup the contents of my current iPod Touch by attaching the device and right-clicking on it. The Backup context menu just isn't there.
I currently have iTunes v10.3x and I need some "serious" help. :-) I did the Run Diagnostic with the device attached. I looked at the report and saw something that might be the cause. I am running iTunes not as the administrator. But if I try to run it as an admin, the Library is now different and I'm just "scared" to screw things up some more.
    Thank you.
    Horace
P.S. Should I send the diagnostic report? Is it safe? If not what info should I exclude? Thanks.

" When I did this, my library showed all the music I have "purchased" from itunes but did not have the music that I downloaded a long time ago through itunes from my old CDs."
    Correct.
" How can I get that music to show up in my library now on my new computer?  "
Copy it from your old computer or your backup copy of your old computer.
The sync is one way - computer to ipod.

  • 2nd gen freezing. Rebooting, but freezing regularly... Please help

Hi, I've got a 2nd Gen iPod Touch 32Gb that I haven't used in a while since I got an iPhone, but I gave it to my daughter at Christmas and now it is freezing. It is on 4.2.1 (the list recent software that I can download to it), but randomly it freezes. It could go for 2 hours, or need the home and power button rest after 5 minutes.
Googling it suggests a "hardware" failure.... Any advice?
    Please help!
    Thanks, Simon

I have got a problem with my ipod 2nd gen shuffle. It firstly started out having power in the orange light, so not much, and then when i charged it for a few hours, no power went in.
Now the power has completely drained and i can neither charge it, get it detected by the computer nor can i open it. Whenever i plug it into a comp, sometimes it shows on the orange light for a few seconds and then disappears and nothing happens after that.
Please help me. (I love my ipod and my music =P

  • IPod Shuffle 2nd Gen. not working, music plays but doesn't sync\

    Hello,
I have an iPod Shuffle 2nd Gen since a long time and it always worked perfectly. But now it has stopped working well. It has music stored inside and it plays it, it evencharges from the pc, but doesn't sync in iTunes, nor it shows up on Desktop. On iTunes the message in Italian says idt couldn't be identified and to reconnect the iPod and retry. I tried the Reset Utility but it says my iPod isn' supported even if it is a 2nd Gen iPod. The only positive thing is it shows up on System Profiler.
I tried also turning off the iPod for 5 seconds and turning it again on, but the issue is still there.
    Have you got any suggestions?
    Thankyou

Actually it turns out I can't even add to it. It claims it's synced to another library (which apparently is true, being as it was last used with my Macbook Pro). Somewhat new question, How do I combine the two libraries, as it's all mine, just on two different computers, one of which doesn't work unless it's in Hard Disk Mode.

  • 2GB 2nd gen holding more music than 8GB 4th gen

I bought a new 8GB 4th generation ipod nano to replace my 2GB 2nd generation nano but when a went to transfer my music over not all of it would fit, on the 2nd gen I have 365 songs with free space but the 4th gen has 188 songs with only 1.63GB free space, I have no videos or tv shows on the ipod, only music. why has this happened?

    Hello ppscissors,
    And welcome to Apple Discussions!
Sounds like quite the problem. If I may ask, what format are the songs in? It may not really apply to the situation, but it never hurts to ask and get all the details.
Maybe try completing reformatting the iPod using the tools provided by your OS and then restoring the iPod via iTunes. From there, try reloading the songs to your iPod and see if that helps.
Here are instructions on how to reformat your iPod (whether you have Windows or a Mac)

  • I am having problems streaming music to my apple tv (1st and 2nd gen). The music cuts in an out after a while of playing.  Any suggestions?

I have a first gen apple tv and it works as advertised except for the streaming of music which would cut out/on/out......  I decided to buy a aptv2 and have the same issue.  I have tried using different wireless setups, ipod, iphone and laptop and the same issue happens.  Any suggestions?

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you turn on the computer, and again when you log in.
Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a Fusion Drive or a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to start up and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal startup may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually login automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, restart as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

  • IPod nane (2nd Gen) freezes computer on FIRST INSTALL

I recently purchased an iPod nano. Upon opening it out of the package and installing it on my laptop it opens iTunes (7.0) and freezes the program. It let me check a language and see that my iPod is empty (8GB free). AFter that it says that there are no new software updates, and when I clicked to register my iPod, FREEZE. My laptop is a running Windows XP Pro with the service packs installed. I let it run for a while without coming back to life. I tried reinstalling my iPod on a different USB 2.0 port to no avail.
Has anyone else heard of this problem? How do I correct this? Can anyone offer any help - this is very frustrating with a new device.

I HAVE THE SAME PROBLEM!!! I jus got my nano on friday [2nd generation too] on friday.. and it started acting up that night, after it was charged and everything. So i returned it to the store for a new one, thinking it was jus defected. I had left the new one docked for over 4 hrs, because maybe i jus hadn't charged it long enough. but its still happening! Mayb there should be a recall... I dont know.. because this is discouraging lol.

  • Apple tv (2nd gen) freezes up while watching movies on Netflix. Only sometimes not on every movie. Any ideas how to fix?

Sometimes when I watch a movie on Netflix on my apple tv it will sometimes pause and freeze for an extended period of time. It happens on about 1 out of every 5 movies I watch. If I watch a movie on my iMac (which is in the same room) I don't have any issues whatsoever. My Internet speed is fine at 50 MEG. I just think that it has something to do with the Apple TV unit. Am I doing something wrong or a setting to change or does anyone know how to fix this issue? Thanks in advance, Pete.

This doesn't sound right at all.
    My thought would be:
1 - Possible itunes problem or corrupt itunes library file. Try using iTunes from a different user account to see if thatworks ok, if it does, I'd wonder about the other account library being corrupted.
2 - Network issue - ensure you've not enabled any firewalls or other software security which could be slowing communication to AppleTV.
3 - Hard drive problem - are these movies stored on the computer's main drive? If so, is the rest of the computer behaving normally or slowly? Check SMART status of drive using Disk Utility. If the movies are on an external or network drive, gain can you manually copy stuff to/from that drive normally? If not it could be a hardware issue or network slowness affecting a network drive. Also could the movies be on a drive that is no longer connected? The odd thing is the artwork not showing in itunes as it normally would in my experience even if files were no longer accessible for some reason.
4 - Just for good measure , and for no particular reason, sometimes restarting router, AppleTV and computer can help spurious issues.

  • IPod Touch 2nd gen and iCal/music

    Hello,
I have just ordered my first iPod touch and my question is this. I want to be able to sync my music from my home computer to it while syncing my iCal calender from work. Is it possible to do this? If there is, is it possible without having to obtain MobileMe? Thanks

Import the older versions to the iTunes library from your computer or a backup of it, or buy a newer device, or give up.

  • Ipod shuffe 2nd gen plays music but doesn't charge and not recognised by computer.

My ipod shuffle 2nd Gen plays the music I have already on but neither
my mac nor my windows 7 pc recognise it and it no longer charges.
    Help please

If you've tried the iPod on multiple computers and it's playing fine, just not working with a PC or Mac I would have to say it's most likely your dock/cable. Try using a new one, or a friends.

  • I need to get the music off my Ipod Nano 2nd GEN onto either ITunes or in a music foldes on my new computer. Not all the music was purchased from Apple Itunes HOW DO I DO THIS WITHOUT LOOSING ALL MY MUSIC??

I have not had a computer for several years and I just got a new one. My old computer got a virus and when that happened all my music was lost. Thank goodness I had it all on my Ipod Nano 2nd GEN. Now my problem is that I don't know how to get the music off my Ipod Nano onto my new computer!!! I was able to get the songs that I purchased thru ITunes by just authorizing my new computer. But I have alot more music that is on my Ipod nano that I can't put into my ITunes library. In fact, I can't even get my music into a file folder on my computer!! I really need help. I don't have any copies of the music anywhere else and some of it is hard to get. How do I get my music either into ITunes or into a file folder on my new computer or even if I could get my computer to recognize my Ipod and sync all the music into windows media or something like that. Every time I connect my IPod all that happens is that it tells me if I sync the IPod that it will replace all the music from my ITunes library on to my IPod. And I am guessing that means all my music on the IPod will be erased. PLEASE HELP ME!!!! Thanks from the bottom of my songsters heart

From the OP: "My old computer got a virus and when that happened all my music was lost. "
They don't have the music on their computer so they cannot transfer the iTunes folder, from the computer to their iPod and then to the new computer. And if they try to enable disk use on the iPod it will erase all the music that is on it. The method you cited is moving the files in a data format using the iPod as a flash drive. It doesn't work if they are in music format. That is why I suggested Yamipod.
