2nd gen. iPod -software too old but will not update or restore  HELP!!

Please Help! I've followed all update protocol and itunes 7 is installed, up and running etc, but..
I hook up the ipod and this message appears:
Some of the items in the iTunes library were not copied to the iPod "Kit-Ying's iPod" because your iPod software is too old.
I go to the summary tab in iPod preferences and click Update to get the latest iPod software update.
I'm looking in the summary and it says 'your iPod is up to date' (so the update button cannot be highlighted)
The only other option is to click on the "restore" button, which I've done
over and over again... Only to get:
'contacting the iPod software update server'
And nothing happens.
I cancel and then get this message:
"there was a problem downloading the iPod software for the iPod "Kit-Ying's iPod". The requested resource was not found.
Tried manually restoring the thing and as soon as I hook it up again the
same message appears (software too old etc)
Am I missing something here as I feel I'm going round and round in circles!!
PLEASE help me!!!
ibook   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

hmmmmm.
Some of the items in the iTunes library were not copied to the iPod "Kit-Ying's iPod" because your iPod software is too old.
in your "Summary" page, is itunes displaying the correct icon for your ipod?
is a Movies or Photos tab appearing there?

  • 2nd gen ipod touch sleep/wake button will not work

Like the title says, the sleep/wake button (top button) doesn't work on my 2nd gen ipod touch. In short, I can't put it into sleep mode (I have to wait the one minute), turn it off to save the battery, take screenshots, or even reset it (without iTunes, anyways).
I don't have any guesses on why it's not working. It just stopped working one day. I don't see water damage (via the water damage detector in the earbud jack), and I don't think I dropped it in a way that would harm it (unless dropping it on carpet counts).
I should also mention that randomly, one day after school, I was messing with it, and the button worked. I think the battery had died, and I managed to turn it on then. It worked for a few hours (I charged the battery), and then it went back to not working.
The warranty's up (and I'm broke), so I can't repair it. I also want to point out that the problem started not long after the warranty expired. What, at this point, is my best option? Should I just save up for the newest model? Or would it be cheaper and more efficient to save up just enough for a repair? Any other options I should consider?
    Thanks in advance.

As I said, you can move on to Restore. Backup everything then Restore as New. Restoring from backup would just copy whatever software issue you may have. But it sure looks more and more like a hardware problem. Take a close look at the button to see if perhaps some dirt particles are stuck there.
You can also make an appointment with a Gnius at the nearest Apple store to have it diagnosed. Apple does not fix iPods, they just replace them with refurbished units, so it won't be cheap. Prices are here: http://www.apple.com/support/ipod/service/prices/
You can Google for third part repair hops or do-it-yoursel kits.
    Good luck.

Updated to iOS 6.1.3 now facebook will not update. Any help appreciated.

  • 4GB iPod nano will NOT update or restore

I have iTunes 7.0.1 and a 4GB iPod nano (2nd Gen) on Windows XP SP2.
When I plug it into my computer, it appears as a removable disk (even though "Enable Disk use" is unchecked). When I load iTunes, it does not recognise it.
If I then quit iTunes, eject the disk through Windows Explorer and stop the iPod service (via My Computer > Manage > Services & Applications > Services or via Task Manager), then reload iTunes, the iPod service starts again and my iPod appears in iTunes. Great.
However, if I then go to update the iPod with the new 1.0.2 software, once it starts to update, something ejects the iPod and the progress bar in iTunes just sits there. The iPod has been ejected and will never update. I cannot restore it as it does exactly the same thing.
I've just paid good, hard cash for this iPod nano and I can't use it?! Why oh why did Apple put the iPod updater software INSIDE iTunes??? That's a recipe for disaster, as can be seen by the multitude of posts on this topic in these forums and elsewhere on the net.
Before you ask, yes I have tried all the USB ports, yes I have tried other computers, yes I have stopped all anti-virus software, yes blah blah blah. I keep getting error 1415.
I'm really narked off with Apple about this. If they cannot provide a working solution, then it's going back to the store and I'll get a Zune... (that's a joke by the way...)

    SOLUTION
    SOLUTION
I had the exact same problems before, iTunes doesn’t recognize iPod after connecting it, I had to use the restart iPod Service method to get it working.
I tried this on my second computer and it worked perfectly, iTunes recognizes iPod every time I plug it in.
I compared the process/services opened in both computers, and I turned on some services which were previously on disable(excluding iPod Service). Unfortunately I forgot which services it was, so I took some screenshots and compare these with your services.
After modifying the services, I tried plug and unplug the iPod several times without closing iTunes, iPod was instantly recognized by iTunes every time!
I attached the links to screenshots of my automatic services and manual services, ignore the service if its not on your list!
For those don’t know how to open Services, Start -> Run -> “services.msc”

  • IPad will not update or restore to factory settings.

My iPad Air is stuck in recovery mode. I was using my iPad to watch Netflix when all of a sudden the screen display had lines going through it and then the device shut off. I plugged it in to charge, since it was almost dead and left it for a few hours. When I came back and tried to turn it on, it would not turn on. After a few attempts it did. and seemed to be working fine for about 5 minutes, until I tried to close a few apps, and same thing happened, lines through the display and then turned off. I tried to plug my iPad in to my computer to update it, but it must have malfunctioned while updating because then it went into recovery mode. I tried to restore the iPad to factory settings and I keep getting an error saying it can not update or restore.
I then brought my iPad in to the Apple store for some technical support. The "technician" was less than helpful and only did what I had done at home: plug into computer and try to update & restore using itunes. Needless to say it did not work. He then told me it must be a hard drive problem and since I was 2 months out of warranty that I could get a replacement iPad for $299 +tax. I asked for the manager and of course "he was busy" and said this was my only option. I asked him how thsi could've happened and he told me he had no way of knowing and didn't know what caused these things to happen.
I have been an Apple user for 10+ years and have enjoyed every product I have ever bought there. I am extremely disappointed that by me using my iPad normally, never dropping it, never spilling water on it and then their product failing that I have to pay almost $300 to get a replacement. It seems that this problem could not have been avoided, since they don't know what causes these things and that this was Apples fault for selling faulty products. I would have never bought the iPad to begin with had I known I would need to purchase a replacement only 13 months later.
I am wondering if anyone has gone through something similar and if there are any other options for me.

Did you put the iPad into Recovery Mode? Follow the steps in this Apple support document:
If you can't update or restore your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch - Apple Support
It could be an internal hardware failure though, as the Apple technician explained. While not common these things do happen. If that's the case you options are to replace the iPad with an identical model using the Out of Warranty replacement process and paying the $299 fee or purchase a new replacement iPad.

  • My Ipod touch 4th gen shows up under devices but will not let me sync to it.

I am using windows XP with the newest updates.  I have itunes 10.5 currently installed on the computer.  My ipod does not have the newest ios software on it.  When I plug my Ipod up, it opens itunes and loads it under devices correctly.  Since i don't currently have an internet connection the itunes store tries to open and I close the box out, which it gives me an error that "the itnunes store could not be connected, check cable connections and try again".  A white screen is visibile with the word "Ipod" in the middle on the right side.  My Ipod at this point is still visible under devices, but can not sync to it; under file the sync to ipod command is grayed out, unable to be clicked on.  The ipod connect and synced perfect with itunes 9 before upgrade to 10.5.  Any suggestions to fix this problem would be great.

Figured the problem out.  I had to be hooked up to the internet the first time that I hooked my Ipod touch up so that I could register it through the Itunes store.  Since I got the newest Itunes 10.5, it requires that I register the Apple product first.  Now with the internet unplugged I can plug my Ipod touch into the computer and sync it up like I normally do.

itunes on my computer has the up to date software, just my ipod that doesn't.
i've tried updating it by connecting it to the computer, and just on the ipod itself, neither work.

  • TS1741 my 2nd gen iPod touch uses iOS 4.2.1. i foolishly restored it and lost the old version of 'remote', which worked perfectly, and i can't install the current app, which requires iOS 5.0. where can i find and download the older version of 'remote'?

time to spring for a new iPod?

    1. On your computer or in the backups of it. It is no longer available in the iTunes Store.
    2. Not necessarily. In the event you can't get the older version back, you can purchase a third generation iPod touch or iPhone 3GS and not a brand new device.

  • ITunes updates songs, playlists, etc., but will not update iPod options

When I plug in my iPod (4G, 40GB), everything syncs as it should --songs, playlists, podcasts, etc. The same is true when I manually choose to update the pod. (i.e. from a context menu or somewhere else in the UI) However, I am unable to change any of the options for the iPod. This includes renaming, choosing disk access, etc.
When I attempt to make these changes from the "Preferences" dialog, iTunes will say "Updating iPod," etc. but while the changes appear in iTunes, they are not actually made on the iPod itself.
A similar situation occurs when renaming the iPod. Same as before, iTunes "goes through the motions" but doesn't actually change. The difference is that after the iPod is renamed, it will no longer update until the iPod is ejected and reconnected. iTunes gives an error message saying: "The iPod '[New Name]' cannot be updated. The disk could not be read from or written to." The name listed in the iPod's About menu is still the old name.

iPod freezing up can sometimes indicate a hard drive failure. To determine this, follow these steps:
Press menu + select until the apple logo appears.
With the apple logo still on the screen, press and hold select + rewind. You will soon see a screen that says "IRAM PASS HIT PLAY CONTINUE".
    Press play/pause.
Using the forward button, navigate to "HDD SCAN" and select it.
Connect your iPod to the wall adapter.
Allow sufficient time for the scan to complete, it can take a couple of hours. Results such as a "HDD PASS" that appears in seconds or a minute or two, "SCAN NG" or "RD FAIL" indicate the iPod's hard drive is pooched and the unit will have to be replaced.
Freezing during sync can also happen if the ports are not high powered USB 2.0.
