2nd Gen Macbook Pro - Screen died/went black for a few hours

Hi,
I have a second gen 15" Macbook Pro (c2duo 2.16) and recently when I was using the Internet the screen died on me. The display seemed to turn off but the Hd kept working, I pressed some keys to try and revive it, but no joy. Thinking that the display had died on me, I left it to one side, only to find that a couple of hours later it miraculously came back to life.
It's only happened the one time so far, but I am feeling a bit uneasy about this. Could it be that this is a sign of a logic board/GPU failure? Is the ATI x1600 prone to failure? I am a little concerned as I need my laptop for some regular PS design work, anyone have any similar problems?

Yes, I had the exact same problem with a second gen 17" MBP (2.33 core 2 duo). When the machine got hot, the graphics card would seem to die and I'd need to leave the machine off for several hours if I wanted the screen to come on again (and even then it wouldn't always work). It seemed when the GPU got to around 50ºC everything would freeze and upon restart, the screen would not come back on. I ended up having to get the logic board replaced (at cost - luckily this is a company-owned machine so they dealt with that) and so far, so good. However, it seems the ATI X1600 is prone to heat damage as can be seen by various threads here and around the net.
A tip from my experience: enable screen sharing. That way if you have a spare computer (any will do, as long as you enable the VNC server) you can still use your Mac when/if the screen goes again. Helpful if you're in the middle of something and didn't get to save or whatever.

My 13 in MacBook Pro screen randomly goes black.  It was purchased in 2010.  It's a 10.6.8.  It started just recently.  The only thing I can think of is is that my 7 year old son played an online game with the computer.  I did check the "hot corners" settings and that is not the issue.  When the screen goes black, I generally end of foce shutting it down with the power button.

  • Macbook Pro Randomly Enters Sleep Mode For A Few Seconds

    Hi All,
My Macbook Pro has had this problem since a few months after I purchased it. While working or playing the laptop will randomly go into what seems like sleep mode. The screen turns off, I hear the hard drive stop and then a couple seconds later it starts back up on its own. Any Internet connection I had disconnects, but other than that it starts up as normal.
The problem comes and goes and doesn't seem to be consistent with anything that I'm aware of. Sometimes it happens once, then doesn't happen for days. Often it will happen several times in a row over the course of an hour.
I've called support and brought the laptop to the genius bar where they ran several tests, but were unable to figure anything out. Research online has shown similar issues with other users, but no solutions. The laptop is not stacked on anything magnetic, the issue occurs when running hot or cold and whether I'm on battery power or plugged in.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. If this can't be resolved is it something I can bring to apple and get a replacement under my year warranty?

  • Macbook pro screen flickering brightness/black screen?

on saturday night I was using my MacBook pro and drinking water when my friend made me laugh so I accidentally spit like 5 drops of water onto my macbook screen. the drops leaking down into the base, not exactly the keyboard but just right under the screen where it would drip down. a instantly got a towel and dried it off but the macbooks screen statted flickering off and on. then it went permanently black but it seemed like it was still on. I tried to hold down the power button and it would make all the on and off noises just the screen wouldn't work. it would maybe flash for a second but then just go dark. I made the mistake of not turning it completely off when it first happened because I didn't know what to do but after maybe 10 minutes I turned it off and opened it up and kept it upside down the whole night to let the water come out if there was any. the next day around 12pm I turned it on and everything was working completely fine. no problems or signs that eer spit the water. then the next day (Monday) half way thru the day I was watching Netflix and I noticed every 5 minutes or so the screen would dim no matter what brightness I had it on and after a couple seconds it would go back to regular brightness. after like an hour it started doing that more frequently and it gave a black screen until I moved the cursor. I paniced and shut it off for the rest of day thinking it would be better the next day. well the next day (today) I turned it on and it was even worse. it's almost like the screen is having spaz attacks every 2 minutes. it'll go dim or bright randomly and then go black until I move the cursor and when it gowa dim there's these weird bright lights things coming from the bottom of the screen. but other then that the macbook works completely fine. iit's still usable, and the screen spasms are annoying but I could live with them. but first I want to make sure it's not going to get worse and worse everyday and just permantly die soon. im only 15 and Ive been dreading telling my parents what happened but if i have to replace something I have to tell them. I've tried researching what I have to replace but no one has my exact symptoms. I think I'd either have to replace the Lcd (whatever that is??) or the inverter. someone please help, thank you!!

  • MacBook Pro screen randomly turns black on me for no reason while I'm using it? What's wrong with my MacBook?

I have a MacBook Pro from 2009 and the screen randomly turns black on me for no reason while I'm using it? It takes anywhere from 5 seconds to 1 minute to turn back on and no matter what I do it just has to fix itself so idk if it is going in to sleep mode or what. Anyone know the issue? Thanks.

Run through them and stop after #16 or if the problem stops, or if something tells you something severe (like hardware test giving a error)
If you can backup your personal data off the machine, you should do that first.
Hardware issues we cant' fix, only a few things may fix it.
Software issues we can fix, but right now we don't know what is causing your issue as we can't see it obviously.
So your going through a process of elimination to try to give us a clue what's the problem and then we can advise a course of action.
If you feel this is way over your head, then just make a appointement with Apple and/or your local PC/Mac specialist.

  • 2nd Gen Ipod Touch screen just went dim

On my 2nd gen ipod touch my screen just went dark, no "backlight" or brightness. I'vwe turned off the auto brightness, I've restored the whole ipod and I am running iOS4.1. Up until today I have had no problem like this. I, of course, can't find anything on the forums similar to this. When I bring the ipod out of sleep I have a lit screen until I slide the bar to unlock, then boom no light. If I catch the screen in the right light I can see the apps, but other than that, NO Deal. Is there a fix??? Is anyone else having this problem???
    thanks
    Tim

Well, I think it is fixed or I have gone the longest amount of time with the screen not going dim, no thanks to Apple.
I went as far as trying to jailbreak my ipod and "downgrading" to iOS3. I got it jailbrokenm but could not downgrade to anything, so I went back to iOS4.2.1.  It actually worked worse while jailbroken, the screen never lit up.  The "fix" came about when I created a whole new library for the ipod, loaded a fresh download of iOS4.2.1 and took all of the extra apps off and so far the screen has been staying lit all the time.  the only thing i can think off was that there was something wrong with library file.  Now if Apple could come up with an easy was for me to have my ipod open the new library when connected istead of me having to do the Shift+click method, becasue I am not sure if it is safe to delete the original library file.
Anyone having the same problem try creating a new iTunes library and copying your music files over, hopefully it helps you too.

  • New 2nd Gen Macbook Pro does not come out of sleep mode overnight

I bought the new generation macbook pro last week and every night when I closed the lid of the computer, it would not wake up in the morning. I had to press the on button several times before it restarted. I then get a message that my computer was shut down improperly. It also had some serious trackpad issues.
I brought it in and they gave me a new one. At first they thought I was given the older machine by accident...but I was not.
Anyway, I took it home and the first night it was okay but the 2nd night it had the same problem. fyi..I migrated all my files from the old computer to this one and don't know if that could cause the problem.
Does anyone know how to fix this?

  • My I pad screen just went black for no reason and will not turn on again

My I pad suddenly went black and will not come back on with the on/off button.has any one have an suggestion as to the cause.

Firstly, try a Reset [Hold the Home and Sleep/Wake buttons down together for 10 seconds or so (until the Apple logo appears) and then release. When the screen goes blank then power ON again in the normal way.] It is 'appsolutely' safe!
If that does nor work, more sure battery I charged and if it still does not work go den the route of putting your device ino are cover mode -

Check your energy savings. The settings may be set to something. If that does not work, try resetting your PMU.

  • Macbook Pro...will work for a few minutes, then power goes out all together

Hey guys, tried finding an answer to this somewhere else on the forum, but came up empty. If this has been answered elsewhere, feel free to direct me there.
I have an older macbook pro (2011) that's in rough shape, but worked well up until recently. The symptoms I'm experiencing:
-The computer will charge (all lights are showing green on the charger and the computer)
-When I try to turn it on, sometimes it will turn on fine. Other times it will light up, then shut down immediatly
-If I remove the power cord and insert it again, sometimes it will boot up
-When I can get it to boot up. It will run fine for about 1-2 minutes, open all the programs, then shut down/black out all together (as if the battery was removed)
I'm assuming this is a hardware issue, or a cord issue, but not sure where I should be targeting my efforts. Any ideas? Thanks !

  • Macbook Pro I get a light for a few seconds then a blinking light, then nothing, no start up, nothing.

I can't restart my Macbook Pro after putting it to sleep.  I now get a blinking light, then nothing.  The computer will not start up, even after doing what is recommended in the mannual.  Has anyone else had this problem?  Were you able to solve it?  How were you able to resolve it?  Thanks for any help you can send my way.  mt

Thanks for the help.  Unfortunately I live a 5 hour drive to my closest Apple store, so making a "Genius" appointment is not possible at this time.  I have tried re-seating my memory cards, I have also tried using the original memory cards that I replaced in favor of more memory.  I got the 3 beeps and 5 second pause 3 beeps indicating that the RAM doesn not pass integrity check.  Am I still at the "Genius" appointment?  Thanks for your help.

Look as if you're having a GPU glitch. If I were you, I'd take the computer into your local Apple Store and run extensive diagnostics on it. You can do a basic hardware check yourself, using the Apple Hardware Test.
    Good luck,
