2nd gen mini completely dead, does nothing

The other day I plugged my iPod in to charge it. I noticed the lightning bolt charging icon. About 10 min. later when I looked at it, the screen was blank. When I looked at iTunes, I noticed it had not reverted to the screen it usually does whenever I plug the iPod in, nor was my iPod showing up in the left hand column like it usually does when charging. I tried turning the iPod on and nothing happened. I tried restarting the computer. Still nothing happened. The iPod does not show up in My Computer. I've tried resetting by holding Select and Menu at the same time. Several times. Nothing. Even tried giving it a good whack on the desk as suggested in another thread, but still no luck. My current iTunes version is 7.0.2.16. I have tried downloading the last few times an update was available and always get an error message when I triedto run the application, so I've not been able to update to the current version. I am trying one more time as I type this up, but this may be a separate problem for another forum. Anyway... any suggestions on what else I can try? Thinking that I might need to uninstall and try re-installing the whole thing, but would rather try other options first if any exist. Thanks.

So after trying various and sundry things gleaned from scouring topics and websites I have made a tiny bit of progress. Perhaps.... I now can get the apple icon to show up and the sad ipod icon with the exclamation point and then the charging icon, which never shows any further than 1/4 charged. I couldn't get anything at all before, which is why I'm considering this progress. Oh, and I was FINALLY able to update itunes to the most current version. Beyond that, I still can't get my ipod on and usable or get my computer to recognize when its plugged in.

  • Using 8 GB Flash Drive in 2nd gen mini

I have a 2nd gen mini and recently the 4 GB hard drive died. I read that these can also use Flash Memory in place of the drive. I installed it using IFIXIT.COM's directions and everything worked out fine putting it back together but it still shows a folder with an exclamation point in the display and the Mini won't be seen by iTunes or any of the older updaters. Does the 8 GB Flash Drive require some kind of initialization prior to use? I had thought that iTunes would see it and ask if I wanted to initialize it. Any help would be most appreciated.

You will need to go to Disk Utility and format the drive (Use HFS+) on the iPod, and then use iTunes to restore the iPod.

  • Mini 1st Gen Harddrive in 2nd Gen mini

Hey there.. i have two ipod minis, one is a 1st gen and the other is a 2nd gen.
The 2nd gen's hard drive is giving me a wierd repetitive whirling sound and is displaying the sad ipod. However my first gen mini's harddrive is working fine.
So i carefully transferred the 1st gen's hd to the 2nd gen but then it didnt even notice it... it did the apple bootup then just reset without reading the hd. So then i put the hd back into the 1st gen and it worked fine :S.
The reason im wanting to use the 2nd gen mini is because the 1st gen's clickwheel "Play/Pause" button doesnt work.
Any suggestions? Should the 1st Gen Mini's hard drive work in the 2nd Gen Mini?

Are they the same capacity? I can look into it if you want.

  • 2nd Gen Mini (no HDMI) to Sony TV

I have a 2nd Gen Mini w/ no HDMI output that I'm using as a HTPC, an old Denon reciever w/out HDMI or Optical inputs.  I recently acquired a Sony KDL NX810 TV.
Currently, I run a mini-DVI to HDMI adapter cable from the Mini to the TV and the headphone jack to RCA plugs into the reciever.  However, I am getting a bit of lag on the sound - it's not quite in sync......
Should I run a mini DVI to VGA cable to from the mini to the TV and run the audio output directly to the TV and then audio out from the TV to the reciever?
    Thanks!

I am having the same issue.
I have a Panasonic TH-50PX60U, and a Yamaha RX-V2065. The Mini is plugged into the Yamaha via HDMI and Yamaha to TV via HDMI.
Problem: Just to clarify I do NOT have a video problem. That part seems to be working fine, my problem is with audio. When ever I switch inputs on the receiver or turn the system off (not the Mini, that always stays on) the audio defaults back to the internal speaker in the Mini. I have to go into system settings and change it back to the HDMI audio out. This is super frustrating. I'm sorry if I posted this in the wrong area, but it's the only thread that looked like it might have an answer. Thanks!

  • ITunes doesn't recognize IPOD Nano (2nd Gen), but Windows XP does

I'm a longtime happy owner of an IPOD Mini and bought a second Gen IPOD Nano a few months ago that works great. I have two identical P4 Sony Vaios that I back up/clone from one to the other every so often to keep them as identical as possible. It's been some months though since I've backed up/cloned my primary laptop to the secondary, and the 2nd Gen Nano isn't being recognized by ITunes on my primary laptop, only my secondary laptop. However Windows recognizes the Nano just fine on the primary laptop on all 3 USB 2.0 ports (I haven't tried my Mini recently), and I can browse the file system of the Nano, but ITunes just doesn't see it.
As I mentioned, my secondary laptop works just fine with the Nano, both Windows XP AND ITunes recognizes it and can update it, but I don't want to have to use that computer JUST for updating my IPOD, and pretty soon I need to back up my primary laptop to my secondary. I've actually only been holding off on that because I can't get my Nano to be recgonized by ITunes with my primary laptop and don't want to screw them both up. Cloning my secondary laptop to become my primary isn't an option, the file system is many months outdated, I need to get the Nano working with ITunes on my primary laptop.
This is definitely a software/driver/service issue, I can take the hard drive out of my secondary laptop, put it in my primary, and ITunes will recognize the Nano just fine. I can take the hard drive out of my primary laptop, put it in my secondary, and ITunes can't see the Ipod. I've upgraded ITunes twice on the primary laptop in the last few months with no improvement, so that hasn't helped.
I really don't know what else to do at this point, I was under the impression that any drivers needed are installed by ITunes, and as long as Windows recognizes the device (which it does) everything should be fine and ITunes should recognize it. I've checked my services and there is only one IPOD related service that I've found (it's actually called "Ipod Service") and I've confirmed that service is running and starts automatically. I presume that service is needed and isn't a legacy from my IPOD Mini and an old version of ITunes.
If, after digesting the above information, anyone has any suggestions, please let me know. This has gotten to be somewhat annoying.

Nevermind. I uninstalled ITunes completely as well as the IPOD updater program (I think that's what it was basically called) that was installed on my system. I then rebooted, tested the Nano to make sure Windows recognized it, then tested it (successfully) with Winamp and the Winamp IPOD plugin. It was already working properly with Winamp and the IPOD plugin even when ITunes wasn't recognizing it so there was no change there. Once everything checked out I reinstalled the current version of ITunes and it FINALLY recognized the IPOD. It said there was a new software version available for the Nano so I went ahead and allowed it to download and install the update to 1.1. The update went smoothly and once the Nano restarted ITunes again recognized it. No clue what the problem was that created this error condition initially, but perhaps someone else will benefit from this information. I would have thought that reinstalling ITunes at least 3 times, including 2 version upgrades, would have resolved the problem, but it took removing ITunes and the IPOD software completely to resolve it.

  • When i connect my ipod nano 2nd gen, it charges but does not appear in windows or itunes.  I tried the reset but it didn't work.  how can i fix this?

I bough a 4g Ipod nano 2nd gen for my cousins birthday.  When i plug it into my computer it charges but does not show up in windows or itunes.  I tried reseting it, reinstalling itunes, everything the site said but it didn't help. I am trying to sync songs to it for my cousin, but it won't work with it not connecting.  Could the wire have something to do with it or is there a bigger problem here?

One day 2 weeks ago, my ipod was "low battery" so I plugged it in to charge, I noticed about 20 minutes later the screen displayed a 'disabled' message saying "iPod disabled, Try again in 22 000 000 minutes". Now I can't get it to charge or do anything the screen is completely dead. Someone please help!!!!

  • Would 1st gen mini screen work with 2nd gen mini with retina?

I just bought an ipad mini with retina display.  I dropped it and cracked the screen up just a few days after buying it.  I did not get the protection plan.  Could I buy a replacement screen for the 1st gen mini and it work?  I can't seem to find replacement screens labeled for retina display and I don't wanna pay apple $220 to fix it

I don't believe it will work, but I can't say for certain. You're on your own on this problem, though perhaps you can get assistance on http://www.ifixit.com.

  • Ipod Mini - music disappeared, does nothing

I bought an ipod mini fall of 2004, right away it had issues...in the first month it, I turned it on one day and all of my music was gone. I sent it back to Apple thinking it was the battery...they found nothing. then of course it was fine through the rest of the warranty and one year and one month later, it lost all music again and when plugged in, just shows the apple. wont do anything alt all now...
I had put it in a drawer for the past 9 months, as I couldnt deal with getting another apple brand lemon.
is it the battery or worse? thanks...

The exact same thing happened to me. One day I went to turn on my ipod mini and all my music was gone.
So I thought, "Oh, I'll just connect it to my computer again to get all the songs back."
Well for some reason it wouldn't connect. It still says
"Do not diconnect." but nothing happens. it just sits there for hours without poping up onto my itunes.

  • After two days Ipad is completely dead does not charge or turn on

Purchased new ipad with retina display and was working fine til tried to turn on today and nothing. does not charge or turn on HELP!!!

If you did run the battery totally down, it can take at least half an hour after you plug it in before it shows any signs of life.
ANd in trying to recharge it, are you plugging it into the wall with its supplied charger? If you're trying via USB then it may take hours and hours before it shows any sign of charging. Most USB ports don't put out enough power to meet the iPad's power requirements.

  • Apple TV (2nd gen) fetches complete movie before allowing to play it.

I thought that I could stream right after renting the movie, but in some case the Apple TV will just insist on fetching the WHOLE movie before to start playing it, it can last hours. I haven't find any configuration to force streaming.
Does anyone know a work around?

HD files are 3-4GB and tehrefore quite large.
Quality is fixed so a slow connection will require enough time to buffer an amount which allows complete playback without rebuffering at the prevailing internet speed.
Once enough has buffered the rest will download in the background if you start to play.
The annoyance with a slow connection is that if you do other things while the buffer is filling, the other activities can flush the buffer forcing the download to start from scratch.

  • Cannot get AirPlay mirroring to work on my up to date iPad 3 and 2nd gen ATV. It does not show up anywhere.

    Hi,
Does anyone know how to solve this issue. I have looked at the support tips on apple, and both devices are fully up to date. However, AirPlay does not show up anywhere on my iPad, and there does not seem to be any way of connecting it to my apple tv. Both are running on the same wifi network. AirPlay is turned on  in the ATV. Am I missing something?
    Any help greatly appreciated!
    Cheers.

How old is your WiFi router and are you connected to "N" WiFi? It seems to make all the difference. On your MBA, click the WiFi icon while holding down the option key. Does it say you are connected to 802.11n?

  • 3rd party batteries for Mini 2nd gen

I need a new battery for my 2nd Gen Mini. I've found a great deal on ebay, but I'm a little nervous about 3rd-party stuff. What do you think?
    http://cgi.ebay.com/FOR-IPOD-MINI-REPLACEMENT-850mAh-BATTERY-PACK-KIT-TOOLSW0QQitemZ170425026259QQcmdZViewItemQQptZOther_MP3_PlayerAccessories?hash=item27ae1f86d3
Is this worth trying? What does "non-OEM" mean?

    Hello Daboa,
I can tell you what non-OEM means, but I cannot offer any advice regarding the 3rd party replacement battery you provided above. I suggest you do a bit more research online to see what others have had to say about it. Otherwise, try and look elsewhere for replacement batteries. There are several third party repair companies that will offer the parts and service to replace the one in your iPod mini.
For more help and information regarding battery replacements, see this older post of mine.
    http://discussions.info.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=10821733
Basically, non-OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) means that the product was not sold by the original manufacturer of the product, but instead by a third party company. So the battery you would be buying above would be a compatible battery, but it just will not be from the original manufacturer.
    Hope this helps.
