2nd gen shuffle blinks 3 orange lights then stops.

My 2nd gen shuffle worked yesterday but not today. It now blinks 3 orange lights at me then stops. it doesnt show in itunes or even registers on my computer. I've tried a different usb cable but still no luck. The cable works as it charges my sons 2nd gen shuffle fine. What can I do to fix it?

I have had the same problem.
Just done a restore to factory setting. On the I tunes page.Reloaded music.
Left it plugged in.
Now seems to be OK.fingers crossed

  • 2nd gen shuffle blinks orange 3x then doesnt charge, isnt detected

I have had and used my Ipod Shuffle for a couple months now and I go to plug my Ipod Shuffle into the USB dock and the Ipod light blinks orange three times and nothing happens after that. The Ipod is not detected by my computer or by Itunes. The Ipod does not charge at all. Because the Ipod is not detected by Itunes or anything else for that matter, I can't upload or organize any of my songs on the Ipod. I have tried all of the solutions I can find related to Apple and Ipod. None have worked. I uninstalled Itunes from my computer and then reinstalled it and nothing happened. I want to find the answer to my pesky problem because I don't want to have to buy another MP3 player. Please help me fix this problem. Any ideas or suggestions?

I had the exact problem occur with a 2nd gen shuffle less than 24 hours old. I had just bought my kids each one of these. After loading them both with songs, one of them would no longer be recognized by either of my PC's. When plugged in to the docking station, the light on the ipod would blink orange 3x, and then, nothing. The PC would not play the normal something-was-just-plugged-into-the-USB-port sound. The other shuffle connected fine, using the same USB port and docking station. Strange enough, the ipod that refused to be recognized would still play the music that had already been loaded before the problem started. However, since it was not being recognized by the PC or iTunes, I figured it was not going to take a charge, and would just be a matter of 12-14 hours before the thing was dead for good. I took it back to Best Buy and exchanged it for a new one. This time I purchased the 2-year replacement contract (something I rarely do). Probably a good bet, as a couple of hours later, the sound of the newly-replaced shuffle cuts in and out when the headphone wire is touched. I wonder how many of these cute little guys my kids will go through in the next two years...

  • 1 Gen Shuffle front orange light not working but all else does - ideas??

The front L.E.D. (light) will not glow orange when charging and will not flash (blink) when downloading songs. The rear light (below the on/off switch) does work correctly. The green L.E.D. works properly and the iPod functions correctly in all other respects.
I have used the iPod on both a Mac iBook G4 and a Windows laptop quite successfully since I purchased it 195 days (6 1/2) months ago.
Am using iTunes 7.0.2 and iPod software version 1.1.4
This is a 512mb iPod Shuffle.
Any ideas and help much appreciated!

You could probably get it replaced under warranty, and that would be a good solution. It will work fine without it (and no sort of a software fix is going to make it work, in all likelihood), but the amber light does provide some fairly important indications and warnings that you'd do better to have available.

  • 2nd gen Shuffle not syncing blinks green and orange

My mom got a new computer. I installed Itunes and connected her 2nd gen Shuffle which previously had been administrated by her niece's computer. I deleted all music, restored to factory settings, bought new music but am unable to get music on her shuffle. Her shuffle appears in Itunes sidebar and in computer. Says it is syncing but no music is on Shuffle. Light blinks green and orange, green, orange. Troubleshoot says "current user not administrator". I followed steps in relevant topics but still no music on Shuffle. HELP

  • Shuffle has constant blinking orange light when connected to computer

The shuffle constantly has a blinking orange light when connected to the computer. Itunes and the computer recognizes the ipod. I am getting the error, "The device 'Generic volume' cannot be stopped right now. Try stopping the device again later' when I try to eject the ipod. I have tried to restore the ipod and downloading itunes again and it doesn't work. Please help.

I received an ipod shuffle for Christmas and am having the same problem. When I try to eject it (from either itunes or from "Safely Remove hardware" on Windows, i am told that there is another application trying to use the hardware with similar messages to those above.
It even manages to freeze my computer on Shut Down and on Startup if i leave it connected, and only when I disconnect it does the computer start.
i too would appreciate any help in resolving this.

  • I have 2nd gen shuffle, i am using a new USB to connect to my computer but the light does not come on and itunes does not bring it up?

I have a 2nd gen shuffle. I bought a new USB for it at the apple store last week. They said it would work with the the 2nd Gen shuffle. I have the shuffle plugged in to the computer now. It wont light up and itunes is not reconizing it. Please help!

I would bring it back to the Apple Store and have them test it out on one of their one machines to see if it'll work or not there.

  • 2nd gen shuffle freezes my laptop pc

I was just given a 2nd gen shuffle as a present. Last week I intalled itunes on my lenovo laptop (running windows xp), and all worked great for 1 week. then, suddenly, one day i plugged my shuffle into its dock, and my laptop froze. since then, i cannot get things to work right.
    Details:
    - ipod shuffle has constant amber light blinking when in dock; works normally otherwise, charges fine, etc
    - ipod shuffle works fine w/ songs it already has onboard, but is not recognized by itunes anymore
    - when pulling up my windows task manager while pc is frozen, I've noticed that my shuffle is causing my computer to use 100% of its cpu capacity. Removing the shuffle does not stop this. the only way to remedy this is to tell the task manager to "end process" for the ipod services .exe file, which then returns my pc to normal function. Several experiments show that as soon as my pc recognizes the ipod and starts running that services program, cpu usage hit 100% immediately and the computer freezes again.
    - "reset","retry", "restart" all tried with no success
    - "reinstall" tried, with no success. I had just installed the latest itunes and it worked great for that first week, anyways, so out-of-date software not likely to be the culprit
    - "restore" not possible, because itunes never recognizes that my shuffle is docked now
    - at no point have I recieved any error messages from either itunes or windows
Basically, the thing is useless now, except for the songs already on it. Got any ideas?

  • 2nd gen shuffle not working windows 7

I connected my 2nd gen shuffle to my laptop (Windows 7) and it told me I need to restore it, but Itunes keeps crashing every time i tried. I restared my pc, then it stopped showing in Itunes but showed on devices, and was on. Now it does nothing at all, no lights or anything. Any help appreciated

I have two suggestions.  There is an iPod Reset Utility
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1238
that is only for the 1st and 2nd gen shuffle.  It does something like a Restore in iTunes, but works at a "lower" level in cases when a Restore in iTunes does not work (or cannot be used).  For it to work, the shuffle does need to be seen by the system, and it sounds like yours meets that requirement.
Unfortunately, I don't think it works with Windows 7.  If you happen to have an older PC with 32-bit Windows, you can use that PC to run the utility on the shuffle.  Or, maybe you have a friend with a Mac or 32-bit Windows PC that can run it for your.  Or, if you have an Apple Store nearby, you can make a reservation at the Genius Bar and ask them to look at it and run the reset utility.
The second suggestion, if you don't have a convenient way to use the reset utility, is to use Windows to reformat the shuffle's storage like it was a flash drive.  Use a "full" format (not the "quick" option).  Use the "FAT" format type.  Make sure iTunes is NOT running.  After it is reformatted, it will be blank.  When you run iTunes, it should recognize the shuffle and ask you to Restore it (to re-install the software and set it to default settings).  Hopefully, it will work this time.

  • Blinking Orange Lights

    Here's the story:
Bought a brand new 1GB iPod Shuffle 2nd Gen yesterday. I plug it in and I get blinking orange lights that, according to Apple, means Do Not Disconnect. When iTunes FINALLY opens, it shows that the iPod is syncing. It takes forever to sync and slows down iTunes and any other system folders running in the background (i.e. My Documents, My Computer, etc.) I've kept it on the dock all night, thinking maybe that the thing was simply recharging or something, but still the same problems as the night before.
I've tried resetting the computer, I've tried re-installing iTunes and updating to latest version, I've tried changing the USB ports, I've tried updating all drivers, I've even tried updating all Windows XP components, and nothing seems to speed up the process. Is there anything else that I can do? This happens everytime the iPod is connected to the PC.

Update: When iTunes FINALLY responds and opens up, it shows that the Sync is complete, yet the iPod is still blinking orange and iTunes and everything else is still running at a delayed/snail's pace. I have to wait over 5 minutes for the programs and they finally respond.

  • Need Help with 2nd gen shuffle

I recently purchased a 2nd gen shuffle from a friend. He used Mac and I have Windows Vista so I knew I would have to restore so it would configure to my Windows Vista machine. I did this, renamed and synced some music to it, charged it with no problem. My husband took it with him to work and listened with no problems. He completely used it til the battery went down and needed charging. I hooked it up thru high speed USB port. Itunes didn't recognize it, there were no lights...not even a red or orange light at all. My computer nor device manager recognize it and still no lights on the shuffle period. I've had it hooked up to different ports and no help. I have a nano that works perfectly thru the same port I used so I know it isn't the port. I've tried restarting the computer....no help. I saw the seperate program that you can download for restoring but it says it can't be used with windows vista so I can't try that. Does anyone have any suggestions for me? I really could use some help with this. Thanks in advance for any insight.

And you will have to take me seriously here but, by using the on/off switch, turn it on, count 15 Mississippi and turn it off, counting 15 Mississippi. Do this three times, leave it in the off position and reconnect the ipod to the dock, then the dock to the computer.
Let me know how it goes.

  • Only a blinking orange light!!

We can't get our ipod shuffle (2nd gen.) to do anything. We have a nano that works great, have itunes already installed for that. When we plug in the dock for the shuffle, the computer makes a noise to show it's there but nothing happens, the orange light just keeps blinking on the shuffle. We didn't even get the Setup Assistant. We tried reinstalling itunes, we've registered the shuffle, we've tried a different USB port...still the blinking orange light and nothing else. ANY ideas???????

We found an answer. Our Dell - has several drives
and a card reader that assume the first few letters
of the alphabet. In addition we are part of a larger
network that also assigns drive letters for network
shares that are toward the front of the alphabet.
Apparently the I-pod is limited to those same few
    initial letters.
A tech friend of ours some how manually reassigned
the 4 drives associated with the card reader to drive
letters at the end of the alphabet.

  • Constantly blinking orange light; no longer recognized by computer

I just purchased my shuffle yesterday, connected it to my MAC, charged it (the light turned green), downloaded podcasts from I Tunes and everything seemed fine. I had to leave for a couple of hours and left the Shuffle in the docking station. I came back and the light has been blinking orange ever since (over 24 hours) and the Shuffle is no longer on my computer or recognized as a Device in I Tunes. I tried all the 5 "r's". Any other suggestions - other than taking it back to the store. I would think the product would have a longer life than 36 hours.

I had the blinking orange light happen to my shuffle today when I connected to my XP machine which holds my iTunes.
I tried uninstalling the device, changing the drive letter, changing the USB port it was connected to, the apple reset tool (garbage...). Nothing could get it to connect, I kept getting the message that the iPod was corrupted.
Eventually I took it to my Apple, plugged it in, got it recognized no problem, synced and erased to that iTunes library then did the factory restore.
Took it back to the PC, and was able to re-sync and rebuild the library on the shuffle from there.
So the answer seems to be find a friend with an Apple or take it to your local Apple Store and have them restore the iPod from a Mac.
It's a ghetto fix but I couldn't find any other way to get it to function on my PC
