2nd gen Time Capsule max capacity

Hi,
I 've previously upgraded my 2nd generation Time Capsule (A1302) with a 2TB hard drive. I'd like to make a second upgrade with a bigger hard drive but I don't know if this model is able to accept a 3TB or bigger hard drive.
I'm also wondering if ti's worth it to get a WD Caviar Black or WD NAS Red or with a WD Caviar Green is enough?
Thanks in advance.

Apple may well use a firmware setup that is different to the norm.. Apple drives always have apple logo on them.
Spin down even with Apple drive may not work on gen2.. I tested it and found issues..
ie I removed a 3TB drive from a Gen4 and installed it in a Gen2. The drive had spin down issues.
I installed an off the shelf 3TB drive in the Gen4 and it had no issues spinning down.
Spin down issues vary with brand of drive and other more esoteric issues.
http://www.ifixit.com/Device/Apple_Time_Capsule
We used to find hitachi drives spin down ok.. WD did not.
But firmware on drives is constantly being updated. Take your best shot when you want to be a modder of products.. expect life to get hard.
It should work with 4TB drive.. they have even higher current demands.. the Gen2 power supply will not work.. or work for long.

2nd Gen Time Capsule - will not power up - just stopped working all of a sudden - I have tried other power outlets - I have tried pressing the reset button - no light

The power supply is shot. But that it lasted even this long is the wonder.. not that it died.
    The TC runs too hot..
Look on ebay for "Time Capsule power supply"
You can get a replacement and fix it although the economics are not so good.. it is probably time for a new TC.
If you can DIY it is really only a few dollars worth of capacitors that go bad.

  • 2nd gen time capsule and airport express g

Ive looked high and low but none of the discussions have worked for me. this is what I have. a 2nd gen time capsule running my network of timewarner modem. I just got airport express g older model and I want to use it as a ethernet bridge for my Denon Avr which is not wireless. I need help with making this aiport express a ethernet bridge so I can stream music over my Denon. Please help !!!!!!! I dont need the airport to extend my wireless network just to get my Denon online. Can anyone help!

Unfortunately, you need the AirPort Express "n" model to be able to do what you want to do.
It has a special feature called ProxySTA which allows the Express to "join" a wireless network and enable a signal at the Ethernet port.
The older Express "g" does not have this type of capability.

  • 2nd gen Time Capsule PPPoE issue

I'm lucky enough to have just got a 210Mbs fibre connection at home here in rural Cornwall, UK. The router I was given by my ISP (BT) is known for being pretty terrible, and since the fibre line authenticates via PPPoE I hoped not to use the BT HomeHub 3.
Via a Cat5e cable I connected my separate VDSL fibre modem (they give you two boxes - VDSL fibre modem + HomeHub 3 router) to the Time Capsule and set up the PPPoE login information. The Time Capsule connected immediately and I was online. But it wasn't *that* fast, and a speed test revealed that it was topping out at 80Mbs via Cat5e to my MacBook pro from the Time Capsule.
To check the Cat5e cable from the VDSL modem to the Time Capsule, I plugged it straight into my 2010 Macbook Pro and configured a PPPoE connection manually and connected. The same speedtester reported 210Mbs. So the cable is working properly, and the fibre is performing as it should.
Plug the Cat5e cable back into the Time Capsule's WAN port (which should be Gigabit ethernet), and the Macbook Pro via ethernet into port 1, redo speed test, 80Mbs. I then tried connecting via 5Ghz wifi (reported connection speed via the Airport menu was 300Mbs when a few feet from the TC) and the speed test reveals 80Mbs or so.
I can't for the life of me figure out why the TC is connecting via PPPoE at such slow speeds. I know my cabling is fine from direct tests. I don't really want to use the HomeHub3 if I can help it. Any advice or suggestions gratefully received!

80Mbps is typical speed when the network connection has dropped to 100Mbps instead of 1000Mbps.
In PPPoE mode you have no control over the WAN port speed, but it is possible the TC is cutting it back to 100mbit. The only way to tell is get a gigabit switch and plug it between the modem and the TC.. get one with indicator leds that show connect speed and see what happens.
A Gen2 TC is also getting pretty old.. one of the signs of aging is often port speed dropping from gigabit to fast ethernet.. then 10mbit before not at all.

  • Need help connecting 5th gen Time capsule via wifi to existing wifi network(non-apple) and use ethernet out to AV receiver?

Could anyone help advise me how to use my 5th gen time capsule airport to connect to my existing wireless modem(non-apple) over the wireless network (NOT using the WAN port with a cable) and then connect with an ethernet cable to give internet connectivity to my AV Receiver?  I would also like to be able to back up my macbook pro with the time machine/time capsule benefit.  I know that many AV setups have recommended using airport express to receive wireless connectivity to pass on internet through the ethernet port to AV setups, but I thought I would try to add the extra functionality of the over-the-air backups with the time capsule at the same time.  Is this possible without connecting with a wire to the modem which has no ability for a wired connection where the TV and AV setup is?   Any help would be much appreciated:)

It doesn't work except to another apple router. Sorry.
The express does work.. that is a difference between Express and Extreme/TC.

  • Airplay pausing with 1st gen time capsule

I'm using airplay to stream music from my MacBook Pro (mid 2010) to my apple TV and my stereo that's hooked up to an airport express. Airplay seems to stop and pause at random times (though according to iTunes, the music keeps playing). The streaming often, but not exlusively, stops when one of our computers is backing up to the time capsule.
I use a first generation time capsule to create my wireless network and I exted the network with my airport express. iTunes 11 and all my device firmwares are up to date.
Could my network settings on my time capsule cause the issue? Is the first gen time capsule simply too slow to create a fast enough network that can support airplay?

    Thank you Sheila!
I read and implimented all the information in the links you posted. Unfortunately, it didn't solve my issue.
I used all the recomended setting for my Wi-Fi and even switched my wi-fi to use 5Ghz 802.11n. I also set my AirPort Express to join the network created by the time capsule instead of extending it. These two changes helped somewhat. All of the erratic unpredictable pauses in airplay were gone. After these changes, the only things that caused airplay pauses were Time Machine backups to the Time Capsule (on an external HD connected to the Time Capsule), and when I start up the AirPort Utility and it scannes my network.
Since then, I've bought another AirPort Express to send Airplay music to my living room stereo. To solve the Airplay issues I decided to have this AirPort Express create my Wi-Fi Network instead of the Time Capsule. This gave me a dual band Wi-Fi. I turned off the networking feature of the Time Capsule and connected it to the AirPort Express creating the wireless network using an ethernet cable. I also renamed my Time Capsule and it's HDs to names without spaces (as suggested by a few other posts).
Even after all of these modifications, airplay still skips every time a computer tries to backup to the Time Capsule as well as when the AirPort Utility is scanning the devices on the network. If I disconnect the Time Capsule I can go full days without a single airplay skip, but the minute I reconnect it and a backup occurs airplay just starts skipping like a bad record.
Why are backups to my Time Capsule causing airplay pauses? Would this also happen with a more recent Time Capsule model (I have a first generation model)? Is a new AirPort Express powerfull enough to create a home network capable of Airplay? Could the problem be due to the fact that the backup is done on an external HD attached to the Time Capsule?
Any help would be greatly appreciated!
    Thanks,
    Mathieu

  • I have a 1st Gen Time Capsule 1tb. It turns on, boots up and turns green for 5-10 mins, but then turns solid orange and then blinks orange.  I have removed the hard drive and replaced the power supply . . . still the same problem.  Suggestions?

I purchased a used 1st Gen Time Capsule with a 1 tb hard drive.
When I plugged it in and did the initial setup, it worked fine, but gave me a hard drive error.  A few minutes later the green light turned solid orange, then blinking orange, then the status light went off.  The lights in back stayed on.
I removed the hard drive and rebooted, it turned green for 5-10 minutes then reverted back to a solid orange, blinking orange, then went off.
Next I purchased a remanufactured internal power supply, and installed it (without the hard drive in).  It turned green almost immediately.  After about 15-20 minutes, I decided to try to install the hard drive again, booted it up, and tried to erase the hard drive with was working properly according to the software.  It stopped erasing the disc after about 20 minutes and turned solid orange again, then blinking, then no status light  (but back lights were still lit).
I'm a bit flabbergasted at this point, any suggestions on what to do next?  I think i've pretty much replaced everything except the logic board, but can't seem to find any information on the symptoms of a logic board malfunction.
    Thanks!!!!!!!

A Gen3 is identical board to a Gen4 although they have some differences in firmware and wireless card was updated on every model.. but a Gen3 is substantially faster than Gen1, Gen2 which also have identical boards.
You can with careful shopping get a Gen3 pretty cheap.
Most use a delta power supply which I think is a lot better than the flextronics used in most Gen1/2
You can sell back the parts to ebay.. people still would buy the power supply etc. Even just the case can be useful to a repairer.
But if the board is gone.. it is hard to repair.. not impossible.. but hard.
Gen 3 and Gen 4 are not without faults.
    See this page.
    https://sites.google.com/site/lapastenague/a-deconstruction-of-routers-and-modem s/apple-time-capsule-repair/new-issue-with-a1355-gen-3-tc
I have fixed it a different way.. by using the small converters you can buy in bulk from ebay for $1 each.. KIS3R33 .. they produce 3.3V at 2A peaking at 3A.. amazing.. I keep using them to replace onboard power converters by removing the inductor and simply power directly.. the end result has worked great. You can simply change the resistors around and get any output from 1v to 20v depending on input.
Is it worth doing it .. no of course not.. it will waste many more hours than $50 is worth.. but it is kind of fun that you can actually make things work again.
Here is a pic of the Gen 3 totally powered by me. All onboard power removed.
This was to track down the fault in the Gen3.. but I am kind of pleased that it ended up neat enough and reliable enough to work for more than a year.. the Gen3 still serves as a way to get Netflix via network for a friend running 24/7.
The units supply (from left to right)
    1v, 1.1v, 3.3v, 5v, 1.8v
It is feed by 12v supply which is also directly connected to the hard disk.
So it is possible to fix.. !! Only got to be a bit crazy.

  • My 2nd generation Time Capsule won't back up because the backup disk is full??

My 2nd generation Time Capsule-Machine won't back up because the backup disk is full. Ever since the latest OS software update I am not able to erase my time capsule and start over. I use to be able to go into the settings on my Mac and erase it and start over, but not anymore. What can I do? Is there a way to free up space so I can do backups again? I keep getting a notice saying that my backup disk is full and there is not enough space to to a backup for all 3 of my Macs. Any suggestions would help!!! Thanks

The airport utility should still allow you to erase the drive of the TC.. that means a full wipe.. if you want to keep anything from the old backups you should archive it first.. that option was removed on the v6 utility but if any of your computers still runs Lion or earlier you can download 5.6 airport utility or use the inbuilt one.
In mountain lion you cannot install the 5.6 utility but there are ways and means of getting around that.. it does work.. it is relatively easy to unpack the utility and extract the file and just drag it to the utility directory.

  • 2nd generation time capsule: how to limit access to wireless network at night?

I am using a 2nd generation time capsule and need to limit access to my wireless network at night, is there a setting to do this?  I don't want to physically have to shut down my time capsule/router every night but I need a way to turn off the wireless network at night or during specific hours.  Also open to suggestions on how to accomplish this if Time Capsule does not allow it.    This question is for a 2nd generation 500GB, Model A1302 Time Capsule.  Thank you.

Unless you physically attach an electronic timer to the Time Capsule, there is no way to tell the Time Capsule when to turn on and off.
Using the Timed Access settings in AirPort Utility, it is possible to define the hours each day that wireless devices will be allowed to  connect to the network.
For example, you might set the Time Capsule to not allow wireless access between Midnight and 8 AM each day. Devices would be able to connect at other times.
But, Timed Access will not physically power the Time Capsule "on" and "off".

  • How do I know what the wifi password is for my 4th Gen time capsule

I am only new to this time capsule thing… I am pretty savvy in things as technology goes but I just can't figure out how to get the wifi password on the 4TH GEN time capsule I have tried everything I know I was not the one to set it up and my mother let the tech do it and paid no attention to the finer details I would have. PLEASE HELP!!! THANK YOU.

    You will learn grasshopper!!
looked like I didn't even need the reset but this is great and simple way I hope other people use it!!!! Thank you again!!!! From a not as seasoned techy as you!!! I aspire to be as versed someday!!!
You must use the reset to remove the admin password if it is set.. If the tech left it as default the TC throws up an error.
It is one I choose to ignore since security on the Airport routers is pathetic anyway.
    Default password is public btw.
And as long as you access via ethernet then you do not need the wireless password. But the way the utility works now is to set the password the same for both wireless and admin access. So you need to reset.
Pressing the button for 1sec is called a soft reset.
Read the apple documentation on reset. There are 3 levels of reset..

There is an enormous amount of info Apple have available in documents and technical notes.. and apple has the worst search engine known to man.. so use google to find it.. !!

  • I'm having problem networking a Yamaha home theatre amp with vTuner (net radio) with my 2nd gen Time Capule. I only occasionally connect.

I'm having problem networking a Yamaha home theatre amp with vTuner (net radio) with my 2nd gen Time Capule. I only occasionally connect.

Remember everything outside Apple uses SMB type network protocol, not AFP..
That means all your names have to be SMB compatible.. ie
TC name, wireless names, hard disk name..
They must be short, no spaces, pure alphanumeric.
Explain how the whole network is connected.. which is the main router.. ?
How is TC2 connected to TC1?
What mode is it running in?

  • What is the proper way to extend 2nd generation time capsule network to 2nd generation Airport Express?

I have a Simultaneous Dual Band Time Capsule. Up until now, I have been extending the network with the Airport Express (2nd Gen, the 802.11n model). Since it was not simultaneous dual band, it was extending over the 2.4 GHz band so as it could extend b, g, and n and support my iPhone at 2.4 n as well as my iPad and MacBook Pro at 5 GHz.
I just bought the new simultaneous dual band unit, which theoreticalkly should be able to extend both bands.
Now, it is not that simple. I also run a guest network, which I assume also gets extended when WDS is on. I also still have the old Express which I have relegated to another part of the house.
When I set up the new Express, it asked me which one of the networks I want to join, either <SSID> or <SSID 5GHz>, the automatically generated name for the the 5 GHz band on the Time Capsule. Which one do I join? How do I know that both are extended? When I connect to the <SSID 5GHz> now my iPhone can see that one and connect to it, so I am assuming it is NOT going at 5 GHz.
And I have no idea at all what the guest network is doing....
Does anyone have any insight into tthe proper way to configure all the units, and what I can expect? My network is as follows:
                                                                                             Airport Express (Simultaneous Dual Band)
Cable Modem > Time Capsule (Simultaneous Dual Band) >
                                                                                             Airport Express (802.11n, last gen)
I want to run guest network (hopefully simultaneous dual band) and personal network. I want the new express to run both bands just like the Time Capsule, and for the old express I want to know which of the two bands I am extending.
    Thank You!

I also run a guest network, which I assume also gets extended when WDS is on
Unfortunately, the Guest Network cannot be extended.
When I set up the new Express, it asked me which one of the networks I want to join, either <SSID> or <SSID 5GHz>, the automatically generated name for the the 5 GHz band on the Time Capsule.
This likely indicates that the Time Capsule has been setup to use separate names for the 5 GHz and 2.4 GHz bands, instead of the default, which uses the same wireless network name for both bands.
In order for the AirPort Express to be able to extend both bands, the Time Capsule will need to be configured so that both bands use the same wireless network name.
Then, configure the AirPort Express to extend the wireless network name of the Time Capsule, and it will extend both bands.  At least, that is the way an AirPort Extreme works, and I assume that the Express is the same. I don't have an Express here to test, but will in another day or two.
The location of the Express is important, since the 5 GHz signals are not as strong as 2.4 GHz signals. You may need to experiment by placing the Express closer to the Time Capsule than normal.  With an AirPort Extreme, I find that the Extreme must be located no more than about half the distance from the main router to the area that needs more wireless coverage.
If you continue to use the previous model Express to extend as well, it too must be configured to extend the wireless network name of the Time Capsule. Configured this way, the Express will extend the stronger of the 2.4 GHz or 5 GHz signals, so it will likely extend the 2.4 GHz band unless it is located close to the Time Capsule.
To find out which band the previous model Express is extending, locate a Mac laptop close to the Express and hold down the option key on your Mac while you click on the AirPort icon at the top of the screen. The info displayed will indicate whether you (and the Express) are connecting using 2.4 GHz or 5 GHz.

  • Super slow wifi with 4th gen Time Capsule

So, I got my 4th gen 3TB Time Capsule yesterday, hooked it up to my main computer (iMac, mid 2010) with ethernet cable, updated the firmware, and let it sit for it's first back up.
Today when I was going to properly set up the wifi at home (two room apartment) it seemed to be going well, iPhone and iPad get decent wifi, it just seems that the wifi range in the apartment isn't as good as with my old junky Belkin router, but it manages. But then I started up a PC running Windows 7 (64-bit) and connected to the wifi network, tried to download something off of Steam and hit about 114kb/s as max download rate (but the average speed is just a couple of kb/s, if even that)... Before I downloaded at about 1-1,5mb/s.
I started Steam through Parallels Desktop on my iMac and tried downloading through there, and had a download rate of about 3mb/s, so I'm blaming it on the wifi.
I fooled around with the Time Capsules wireless settings, 802.11a/n - 802.11b/g/n / b/g and so forth, with only a decrease in performance, the automatic setting works the "best". I tried giving the 5GHz network it's own name but I dunno, I can't find the network with that name through the PC. But still, as I don't get the same consistent wifi cover in my apartment as with the Belkin router, I'm thinking something is generally messed with the Time Capsules wifi, not just the PC.
Any ideas, any solutions? It would be greatly appreciated!

Today I also tried connecting my Playstation 3 to the router, both are in the same room, about 5 meters apart, t'was SLOW And needless to say, with the Belkin router it was much, much faster. For once I'm not blaming Windows on this one.
Also, ran a speedtest app on my iPhone, it was MUCH faster yesterday with the time capsule (though not satisfactory), today it's about 1/10th of yesterdays slow speed...

  • Apple customer support problem 1st gen Time Capsule

Not sure there is any real point to this since Apple doesnt seem to really engage in these forums.  However, I recently had a 1st gen. Time Capsule die per the well-documented power supply failure problem.  After some prodding I was able to get Apple to replace the unit though it was a handful of days out of the replacement window.
Unfortunately the Apple  "genius" did not include my full business address on the shipping label and the unit has been in Fed-Ex limbo for nearly a week.  I have of course since provided Fed-Ex with the full address of my company office.  However, they will not revise the shipment info without Apple's authorization. I have left 4 voicemails for the Apple "genius" requesting they update my address so the unit can be delivered.  So far nothing, nada, zip... I'm glad my own staff are merely engineers, not geniuses.
To add massive insult to injury, today I received a reminder email from Apple that they have a $500 hold on my credit card and have not received the defective unit back.   Really? no sh*t!  I've not received the replacement unit or return label due to Apple's negligence...hello...welcome to automated email ****.  Of course, there is no reply address ANYWHERE to be found on Apple's website.
So, I'm sitting here with a dead network, $500 balloons on my credit card and no way to correct the delivery address on the replacement TC.
    Hey Apple, ***?
This is not the Apple I know and love.  If I wanted Dell quality service I'd have saved the money and bought a Dell.  I hope this is not the start of a long slow slide back into the Apple of the 1990s.

Agreed that an outright trainwreck such as this is atypical.  However, I am noticing an overall steady decline in customer service at the local Apple stores as well.  The "geniuses" at the Pleasanton Apple store are downright rude and unhelpful.  That is why I even bothered with phone support this time.
I think the phone support attitude is what started me off on the wrong foot.  This unit has a well documented power supply defect for which Apple issued a TSB and even reimbursed people who had to replace the unit due to the power supply failure.  When mine failed, I was actually told by the front line genius - "well, it lasted 2 years, that's pretty good".   That is a Dell/Gateway/Compaq/General Motors attitude.   A $500 router should last more than 2 years.  Cisco enterprise level routers last forever.  Several years ago the white iMacs had a power supply problem.  Mine failed 4 years after purchase and Apple cheerfully fixed it without question or issue.  They had it back to me in less than a week.
My expectations for support are commensurate with the price of Apple's products.  It is a luxury high-end brand. For perspective: This router costs more than a complete Gateway desktop computer system.
When you buy a BMW you expect a certain level of service, When you buy a GM expectations are lowered along with the price of entry. I don't expect to ever have to chase down keystone cop problems like this.  My time is far too valuable for that.  This is why I buy Apple computers and not Gateway computers.
Is it typical? maybe not.  Is it foreshadowing what is to come now that the company is back in the hands of the bean counters that nearly ran it into the ground last time?   Maybe.
