2nd Gen Touch & WiFi & Hidden SSID networks

I have tried to read all of the (many, many) existing threads on WiFi issues with the new iPod Touch -- frankly this ought to be a HUGE embarrassment to Apple.
Let me add to the list of problems -- the many strikes against this otherwise quite lovable device:
It doesn't play well with networks that use hidden SSID, so-called "closed" networks. All of the known existing problems with Touch 2Gen and ordinary WiFi networks (failure to join automatically, needing to have the device reset before joining, needing to turn off/on/off/on the wifi on the device before joining, etc. etc. etc.) -- are replicated and worsened when attempting to join and remain connected to a hidden-SSID network (yes, even one running on Apple's own wireless router!).
The worst is that, very often, one has to repeat going through the entire process of entering the network name and password -- as if the network had been 'forgotten.' (Although, it can be proved the iPod hasn't 'forgotten' the network, as the device will remember details such as a Static IP to associate with the network -- it just forgets to join it in the first place!)
Apple, Apple, Apple!
Are you determined to make me stop buying your products in the future?
Do you intend to fix the very buggy WiFi on this device?

Have you (or anyone who replied on this thread) actually opened a support case with Apple?
I just got a new 2nd Gen touch a couple of weeks ago and have been having the same problems described by you and the others here in my office (which uses a hidden SSID + 128bit WEP). Usually, the connection is lost when the unit comes out of sleep and it won't come back until I do a reset of the network settings and re-enter all the connection parameters.
I have 2 other co-workers with 2nd gen units and they have the exact same problems (worse actually, since they are both farther from the nearest access point).
There are 2 other folks here who have 1st gen units and neither one has ever had any problems here in the building. So this does appear to be a 2nd gen only issue.
I installed the 2.2 update which didn't help or hurt, but I was having the problems with the older 2.1.2 software.
It would be encouraging to at least hear from someone that Apple has acknowledged this is a real problem. If there is some sort of workaround, that would be even more encouraging.
Thanks,
Mark Edington

  • IPhone 5 and iPad 2nd gen weak wifi pick up after iOs 8.0.2 update

    Hi,
I have had my iPhone 5 since September 2012 when it first came out and had never have any problems with it with regards to picking up wifi signal. I had battery issues as the phone got older but it didn't really bother me and I had it sent over to Apple to have the sleep/wake button issue resolved about two weeks ago. Since then, I have purchased the iPhone 6 and gave my old iPhone to my husband. As I'm the one who deals with all the gadgets, I do the updating stuff. My iPhone 6 is on the latest iOs 8.0.2 and it doesn't have any problem whatsoever. My iPhone 5 and iPad 2nd gen (3g + wifi) also had the latest iOs update and both have recurring problems now. Both have problems picking up up wifi signals. Even when I have the iPhone 6 next to them, which has full bars (wifi), the two older gadgets are struggling to pick any signal at all. And if they actually get onto the internet, I only get 1 bar and the internet surfing on them are as sluggish as ever. The battery on the iPhone 5 has drastically gone downhill as well. I have tried to change the WPE/WPA2 connection on the router but it is still the same. I even tried to "Forget the network" and logged in manually again to no avail. The keychain thing on iCloud has been turned off but no change has been noticed. Is there anything else I can do to have this issue resolved? Thanks in advance!

HHowever, I am still looking for a way to bypass the "connect to iTunes" logo since I am in a location with only my iPad and I need to use my phone

  • My 2nd gen touch no longer adds changes from my Outlook 2003 calendar during sync. I even deleted the calendar from the iPod

My 2nd gen touch no longer adds changes from my Outlook 2003 calendar during sync. I even deleted the calendar from the iPod & when I added it back, I still got old data. Any ideas?

  • Airplay works for phots and video, but not music on 2nd gen touch

Upgraded to 4.2 on 2nd gen touch. I can send photos and videos/movies to AppleTV via Airplay, but not music. I can select AppleTV when playing a song on Touch and the music stops playing from Touch, but never plays from AppleTV. Audio works just fine for movies sent to AppleTV.
    Anyone else experience this?
Support told me that this feature is not supported on 2nd gen Touch and I'd have to buy a new Touch. The Apple website says feature is supported. A second call to support and they said it is. ?????

Im having a similar problem where after a period of time I can get neither my iPhone 4 or iTouch 2G to see the Air Tunes speakers on my Airport Express base station. Always works fine from my computer's iTunes though. What I found works is powering off and rebooting the phone / iTouch (not just locking it). When it reboots go to your music and maybe you'll see the Apple TV or Airport Express icon appear now. Works for me anyways. After a while, they will "forget" and I need to reboot the phone again to find it. I think there are kinks in the 4.2 iOS that need to be sorted out.

Sorry, no. 4.2.1 is the highest possible for that model.

  • Both 1st and 2nd gen touchs losing video/music

I have a first gen touch and a 2nd gen touch that are both losing music and video periodically. They are both set to manually manage music and seem fine when plugged in. After hitting the eject button in itunes sometimes they are wiped sometimes they are fine. They only work after doing a restore at which point you have to put everything back on. Both itunes and the ipod software are up to date. Is there any way to fix this?

    I have the same question
    1) ATV gen2 = good at netflix, issues with everything else
    2) ATV gen1 = good at playing movies, music, works well with apple remote, no Netflix
i just set them both up thinking the best solution is to just flip between them with my universal remote, but that remote controls both at the same time even though only one is visible. Interestingly, the Gen3 remote doesn't mess with the Gen1 ATV.
So how do we make it so that our universal remotes can control EACH ATV without both at the same time?

  • Ipad will not connect to hidden ssid network!

    Hello,
my iPad will not connect to my hidden ssid network.
If i enable ssid broadcasting it will work!
But if i disable broadcasting it will not connect again anytime!
What could be the problem? The wi-fi network should be saved, or?
    Florian

  • Sensor low battery indicator in 2nd gen Touch?

I got a used Nike+ kit last week. Everything worked fine, calibration right on. Did a warm-up walk tonight prior to running. When the walk was finished, it said my walk was 0 miles, pace was 0, and burned 0 calories. When I got ready to run, the iPod could never find the sensor. I have turned Nike+ off and on, put the sensor into sleep and "revived" it...all kinds of stuff.
Since it is a used sensor, I'm wondering if the battery has gone. I didn't see a low battery sensor, though, which makes me wonder if the 2nd gen Touch displays one.
    All advice is welcome.

Sorry, didn't notice I was on the Nano forum.

  • Bought Nike+ for 2nd gen touch, doesnt sense it, help please

I bought a new Nike+ sensor for my 2nd gen touch and right out of the box it wouldnt work. It told me to walk around to activate the sensor, but i can walk for 10 minutes and nothing, so i decided to ask the people that actually know something about ipods... thanks
p.s. tried to wake it up, tried settings and calibrations, and checked for software updates

Did you happen to activate the touch to work with the sensor? You have to turn it on in Settings > Nike + iPod.

  • Laptop and apple tv 2nd gen without wifi network

Hi experts, I need your help.
How can I share pictures and music without a wifi or wired network?
I have a laptop with wifi and apple tv 2 gen. I would like to connect apple tv and pc but I don't have a wifi or wired network.
I created a wifi network in "network and sharing center" in windows 7 (I see it on my cellphone), but I do not see it on the apple tv and I cannot connect.
Thanks a lot for your answers!

You need a local network setup to use home-sharing. You won't be able to access any of the other features without internet access.

  • Problems upgrading 8GB 2nd Gen Touch to 4.2

I am trying to update my iPod Touch 2nd Gen 8GB from 3.1.3 to 4.2.
After about 20 minutes of it supposedly downloading the software in iTunes, I get a message saying that there was an error and it couldn't complete the download due to some connection network error and it timed out.  My computer network/connection is fine.  Any ideas?
I've tried a search in the forums but couldn't find a problem like this; my apologies if there is a discussion and I missed it.
    Thanks for your help.

Hello, thanks for the advice but it didn't work.  My iPod is working fine however, there are NO problems with it not being recognized in iTunes, nor does it freeze up or anything.  It's running fine.  I can sync it perfectly fine. The software just won't download.  This is the message I keep getting:
"There was a problem downloading the software for the iPod 'zepians's iPod'.  The network connection timed out.
Make sure your network settings are correct and your network connection is active, or try again later."
I don't know what they mean by 'network connection'.  Everything on my computer is running fine (that I can tell).
I really want to update from 3.1.3 so I can use some of the newer apps and also to update the apps I have.  I'm finding that, while using my iPod, that I cannot update my apps via iTunes App Store, nor can I purchase/download any songs or apps from iTunes via my iPod.  After about 5 minutes I get a 'timed out' message.  I'm guessing it's because of the older 3.1.3 software.

  • I was bored today, so I took a gamble on 3.1.1 on my 2nd gen Touch

So far so good. less than 5 minutes to download the update, 30 minutes to back up Touch, 8 minutes or less to update, and so far all is ok, even wifi. this makes the first time I've installed an upgrade since last year that I wasn't bitten by the same issues as most others, such as last year's "turn on/turn off/turn on" wifi in order to get it to connect issue. IF nothing strange happens in the next couple of days, I give it a thumbs up. However, I still have my wife's Touch to update....
PS: cold boot now takes the 31 seconds (for 2nd gens like mine) reported elsewhere. prior cold boot time was 22 seconds. Guess I'll try not to shut it off often.

I said: One of the more common bugs, both in iphones and touches, seems to be that smart playlists (the kind that compile tracks based on rules you set, like "most played" or "recently added") are not syncing correctly. Can you create a smart playlist (file > new smart playlist) based on these criteria, sync it, then see if the playlist on your ipod matches the playlist on itunes?
'Match the following rule': Media Kind is Music
Limit to "25" items selected by "most often played"
Leave 'match only checked items' unchecked
    Check 'Live Updating'
Regardless of whether or not you're experiencing the ipod touch bug, you should see a playlist in itunes that works correctly. You'll get a list of 25 items that have the 25 highest play counts in your library. You can verify the list by comparing it to viewing the 25 first tracks in your library if you sort by play count.
After you sync this playlist with a properly functioning ipod touch, you should see a similar list on your touch (it might not be identical if you don't have all of your highest rated tracks in itunes synced to your touch). With the bug, and I've seen it on both touches that I've upgraded, you'll see a list of seemingly random tracks. Some of the tracks coming up on mine have zero plays, and the list isn't even sorting those random tracks in play count order.
As folks like to mention, everyone on here has problems with their stuff, so I haven't heard anyone say that this feature still works properly for them after the 3.1.1 upgrade. Let me know if you're an exception.
