2nd generation Ipod not recognized by macbook

Hello,
I have a mac formated 2nd gen ipod and plugged it into my macbook but it does not recognize it. On the other hand, it still charges, I cannot see the ipod nor in the finder nor in itunes.
On the other hand, when I plugged it into my windows desktop computer, it recognized it, and so I reformated it to a windows format to see if that would change anything.
No change...
Any help is appreciated!!

Have you tried another regular FireWire cable? The cable connector has six pins (two are for power) so it is possible for it to charge, yet not be able to connect for data.
Also, when charged and disconnected, does the iPod turn on and display its screen menu? If it has songs loaded, does it play songs as it should? If it does not, there may be a problem with the iPod's hard drive (or logic board).
I don't know if it was in the FAQ you referred to, but did you try putting it into Disk Mode before connecting it to the Mac?

  • Ipad 2  and ipod 2nd generation is not recognized by itunes 10.5

I have windows 7 64 bit and ipad 2 (ios 5.0) and 2nd generation ipod v 4.3.  Neither of these are recognized by itunes when I plug them via usb.  I have 2 usb on the front left side and 2 on the right side back.
I have tried rebooting my laptop and ipad 2 several times as well as shutting down avast antivirus, comodo firewall and spyware sweeper it did not work.  Then of all of sudden whether the antivirus or firewall is shutdown or not itunes recognized ipad 2.
I can connect via wifi using a dlink and going through mozilla firefox to load any files on my ipad 2.
This did not happen before 4.3 it seems it started happening in the last two updates of ios.
I have tried another laptop and it is the same.
I notice  that for the computer to recongize the ipad 2 two beeps must be heard before it is recognized but itunes does not.
    What do you recommend?
What do you mean by a periodic defect.  I live in Hamilton and we do not have an Apple store for me to take into.  I bought it at future shop.
I have also tried to uninstall and update the driver but that did not work.  What is wrong and what do you recommend I do.
I was to reinstall itunes over the itunes that I have would that work.
    thanks for your response.

  • TS1410 My ipod nano 2nd generation is not recognized anymore by iTunes 11.1.5 whereas it was recognized by previous version of itunes

    Hi,
I encounter a problem with my ipod nano (2 nd generation) because it not recognized anymore by itunes. When I say not recognized I mean that the ipod does not appear in the devices field of itunes. I do not know exactly when this problem appeared : i do not synchronize often my ipod but before with my macbook pro the synchronisation worked. iTunes sees others devices such as my iphone 5 and iPhone 4 with respectively iOS 7 and iOS 6.0.1. My macbook pro is updated with Maverick  10.9.2 and itunes is the 11.5.5 version. My MacBook pro is from 2009. With previous version of iTunes I know that my ipod could be synchronized.
I did not find any solution on the Apple Support, so I decided to send this post. If someone already encountered this problem and found th solution it would be very helpful ....

I have a new PC, which now very unfortunately runs Windows Vista as an operating system - I have installed iTunes latest version 7.4 but still the PC does not recognize my iPod or doesn't find the hardware - can anyone help?

  • If I upgrade to Lion and migrate MobileMe to iCloud, can I still sync my 2nd generation iPod Touch to my MacBook Pro (Intel Core 2 Duo) via USB cable?

I am very reluctantly considering upgrading to Lion and going ahead and migrating MobileMe to iCloud before June 2012. If I upgrade and migrate, will I still be able to sync my 2nd generation iPod Touch via USB cable? Or will these changes force me to get a new iPod that can run iOS 5 because syncing will be nightmarish?

Thanks for your reply. I would prefer to keep using this iPod for a while yet. Cheers!

  • 5th generation IPOD not recognized by computer

Hey Internet users, my dad's been having some troubles and I was hoping to try and help him by reposting something he did elsewhere...
"Hello Everyone and thank you for reading my post.
I have a weird problem, my 30 gig 5th generation Ipod is not recognized by my computer or itunes. This is the last thing it happen, I was working on a client house for days, so my ipod's battery was completely dead, I was kind of desperate, so I thought that I could plug it to my client's mac just to recharge, but nothing happened. So days later I got back home and my windows PC will not recognized or charge the ipod at all. I got it charge and works perfect with my Ihome radio. I tried rebooting the Ipod, I tried resetting it to be in disk mode with not a problem, I tried changing the USB port, I did connected my friends Ipod and connected right away, so the wire connector is OK, I tried a different wire connector just in case, I tried connecting the ipod to a different PC.... I kind of running of ideas here. The ipod works great but I would live to download some new tunes to it... Any ideas. I cannot restore or upgrade firmware because ipod is not recognized by the computer....
The thing I am trying right now is installing the latest Itunes and see what happens. I have windows Pro SP3 recently updated. Your help would be greatly appreciated."
So...if anyone has any ideas, please post!!

I am having the same problem. Sorry I'm not going to be of any help. But I hope someone gives you some recommendations cause I really want to get mine fixed. My iPod did the exact same thing. It was dead and I tried to use my car charger for the first tim and it did nothing. Then I plugged it in to a friends computer and nothing. I can only charge it on a speaker dock. And no computer recognizes that it's connection when I use the USB cable.

  • First generation iPod not recognized by iTunes

I recently acquired a first generation iPod, (2001), which appears to be in excellent condition. It has a few dozen songs on it and it played them for over 4 hours before I stopped it with the battery icon still showing 3 bars. My problem is I can't get it to be recognized by iTunes. I tried it first with my current intel iMac and the finder wouldn't even show it although disk utility did. I then tried it on a 10 year old iMac G5 running OS 10.5.8 and iTunes 10.6.3. itunes still won't recognize it but it shows up in the finder as an iPod icon with a firewire icon and the ipod also shows the same when connected to the computer. I think this means that it is in disk mode but I can't get out of it. I've tried every step in the Apple suggestions to no avail. I really want to put my own music on this iPod but obviously can't do anything until I can get iTunes to recognize it.
Any help will be greatly appreciated.

  • My iPod Shuffle 1st or 2nd generation is not recognized in iTunes

We have had this iPod Shuffle since Aug 2008 I believe but only recently started using it.  It was working fine, but when connected to the docking station, I see the status light blick orange 3 times.  No recognition in iTunes.  I have restarted my computer, restarted the iPod, disconnected from the docking station and turned off and turned back on.  It seems to be getting a charge as the light turns green when you turn it on.  We did just get a new iPod a week ago and I don't know if that is some how confusing something.  My 5yr old is not understanding why I can't put different music on for him to dance to   If you can provide any help, I would appreciate it!!  I have a MacBook Pro and I am assuming since my iPhone charges and other iPods, it is just an issue with this earlier shuffle and not my USB ports

    Hello Jane Benstock,
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities
It sounds like the next best step to take would be to reset the iPod Shuffle.

My iPod shuffle is connected, however I can not click on the Restore button as it does not highlight. I have tried using other ports but nothing seems to recognized that I have my ipod plugged in.

  • 1st generation iPod not recognized by iTunes 9

    Hullo:
Recently upgraded to iTunes 9 and found that it doesn't recognize my iPod Shuffle (1st gen). The iPod shows up on My Computer, and it still plays and charges when connected, but it simply never appears on the Devices tab on iTunes (in fact, the Devices tab itself never appears).
Thus far, I have tried re-installing iTunes (following the full uninstall procedure listed on the Apple - Support section), deleting my temp files, restarting the computer after unplugging all USB / external devices, and installing an older version of iTunes (iTunes 8).
    No dice.
Is there anything else I can try? It seems the most common answer to this problem is, "Install an older version of iTunes," but iTunes 8 did not recognize my iPod either (I'm thinking it was because my oldest saved playlist is from when I had already installed iTunes 9, so I don't actually have any saved iTunes 8 playlists) (might be wrong, though).
    Please help?
    Thank you.

    Similar problem here. =(
Plugged in my old 2nd gen (10Gb) iPod into iTunes 9 this morning and all I get is the "OK to disconnect" message.
Which is a huge shame. This iPod is exactly seven years old this month, and I used it all the way up until last year to when I bought my iPhone. It's a testament to Apple's old hardline stance on quality over price, and the fact that they'd oust these models through lack of software development is disappointing.

  • 2nd gen ipod not recognized in windows xp or itunes

I have been working on this for 2 weeks. I have loaded the latest usb drivers/chipsets. Have followed every suggestion on apple website. Obviously lots of people have this problem. When my shuffle is plugged in the computer sees it as new hardware and trys to load a driver which of course there is not one. The hardware "fails to install" and windows can't see it. itunes diagnostics sees all the controllers but no ipod connected. I am about to return the shuffle as I cannot use it. There is nothing wrong with my usb ports my ipod nano works just fine as do all my other devices (camera, printers, mouse, etc.)
    Has anyone solved this?

there is no drive letter assigned. ALL that the computer does is when the ipod is plugged in it says "new hardware found" and the word ipod appears in the system tray. Then immediately the Found new harware Wizard starts up. it says, "This wizard helps you install software for: ipod. So I am interpreting that the usb port is working and the driver for the port is reading the device. However, since there is no disk or software to install, eventuall a Found new hardware bubble reappears saying you a problem was encountered and the hardware was not properly installed. I don't get any farther than that. The device is NEVER listed in My Computer. As indicated before, there is an entry in device manager showing the ipod under other devices with the yellow exclamation point and the detail showing a Code 1 - no driver.

  • How do I resolve the issue of a 2nd generation iPod touch not being shown on iTunes 11.4?

2nd generation iPod not being shown on iTunes 11.4
How do I resolve this issue? I have tried reinstalling after uninstalling it, nothing has worked for me any advice?

Well, go ahead and try every port, make sure to clean out the port with a q-tip, to make sure no dust is blocking the ports.
Then enter DFU, if iTunes doesnt recoginze it when your in DFU, that means you charging input is damadged.
    Hope this help
