2nd Generation iPod Touch Downgrade

Hi, I have a 2nd Generation iPod Touch running iOS 4.2.1, and I am wanting to downgrade to iOS 3.1.3 or earlier, simply to speed the device up and I have this iPod more because I collect them, and to me it's more authentic with iOS 3 or 2. I am receiving the iTunes error 1646 when trying to restore with the older firmware (I have the firmware on my computer as I used to back them up, I backed it up when 3.1.3 came out). Thank you in advance

That's a shame, this iPod could still be useable if it were on older firmware. I guess it's to do with people downgrading for jailbreaking which I DO NOT want to do (I don't jailbreak any of my devices)

HT4059 I have a 2nd generation ipod touch that I am trying to download ibooks onto. It is version 4.2.1. The app says it requires 5.0. Is there an older version I can put on the ipod so I can read books? And same with the kindle app.

Look to the app developer to provide that information when browsing the iTunes Store.
The iPod Touch still works, so what's your problem with it? It still works with older apps, it still does what it's intended to do.
If you aren't happy then sell it and buy a new one.

You neglected to mention that the Numark iM1 is a piece of hardware (a physical box) that plugs into an iPod.
Checking on the Numark website, I suspect they haven't bothered to update their "iPod compatibility" page, since there's no specific reason (as far as I'm aware) why an App that worked with a 2nd gen Touch shouldn't work with a 4th gen model. Is that page where you looked and were then prompted to ask your question?
You might have more success in finding an answer to your question by contatcing the manufacturer (Numark) via their website or checking with a retailer who stocks the iM1. Numark appear to welcome email contact about their products.

iOS5 needs 256MB of Ram to start with, as well as certain features in the CPU that were not available before the iphone 3GS and the iPod touch 3rd gen.

Well you cant download books because the ibook app needs ios 5 and the 2g doesnt support later version of ios. The latest is 4.2.1.
But you can download and hear music on there.

The "device may need service" means a hardware problem. In that case make an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store.
