2nd hand iMac - no software

Hello all,
I have purchased a second hand iMac with no software. I already own an iMac and have upgraded it over the years from 10.4 to and then to 10.6.  As I am no longer using the 10.4 software, and have purchased new versions of 10.5 and 10.6, am I able (legally) to use my 10.4 software that is no longer used to install on my new purchase?
The 2nd hand iMac is a 15" flat panel G4 model. Will my Tiger disks work? If not, how do I go about finding software that is suitable?
regards,
Rhys

As long as the Tiger disks are full retail install (black disks and not the gray system/restore disks that came with another Mac), AND you don't have that OS on another computer, it should work.
All iMac G4s can run Tiger. If you have a 1G or faster iMac G4, it can run Leopard if you have a lot of RAM. I ordered a copy of Leopard last month by calling Apple (it's not on the web store). Leo comes only on DVD so if the iMac does not have a DVD reader, you're looking work workabouts.
Tiger is harder to find, and in such high demand that there are rip-off artists charging high prices for what may be pirated software. Be very careful when shopping for Tiger. And there are more Tiger DVD sets than CD sets about, so the caution from the previous paragraph still applies.
You can call Apple support and ask if they still have replacement system disks. You will need your serial number at hand so they can match a disk set to your computer. It's often the cheapest option but is subject to stock on hand.

  • Trying to install app disc on my New 2nd hand iMac july 2010 MC511B/A

When trying to install app disc on my new 2nd hand july 2010 MC511B/A get a message box showing OS X utilities, when choosing reinstall OS X get T&C's and then 2 options Recovery&Old Mac, Recovery option says locked, Old Mac option asks me to sign in on my @Apple ID, I do then nothing! tried just loading the 'Install discs (Applications & OS X) but no joy, though not sure if uninstall done correctly:(any idea's?

Well, running on a 2006 model.  I did not have a startup disc.  Initially, it booted up on original software in 2006.  Since then, I've upgraded to 10.6 via a box set.  And, since then I think I popped it up to lion.
All I have on a disc is snow leopard.  And, I can't get farther than the setup screen due to hard drive.  I'm taking to a apple authorized repair store right now.  We'll see what they tell me .  I'm just going to weigh the cost of repair vs. buying new.
Another bad, stupid thing is I had no means of backing up my stuff.  So, I might have lost things like music, vids, etc.  we'll see if they can recover.  If the cost is too much for repair I might just forget it and start over with a new system.  Just not sure at this point.

  • 2nd hand iMac osx wired keyboard responds but doesnt type stuck at registration screen Help!?

So i just brought this iMac second hand its fairly new and it has osx  not sure what version, wired keybaord and mouse, mouse is plugged into keybaord and works, keybaord works and makes noises but doesnt respond and type the letters, volume and brightness are the only things that work on it, im currently stuck on the registration screen and can't go any further. I tried plugging in my other keybaord from this pc and it just sat on the identifying keybaord screen. has this happened to any one else?? and can anyone help me if its a software issue or is there a way to format an imac with a secret button or something haha.. this is my first mac and want to use it as a studio computer for recording music so im clueless about them cheers any help would be sick

Is it asking you to identify the keyboard? If so it is asking you to press the key that is right next to the shift key. Press the up key and it should continue. A pc keyboard should work with out issue. If you have to reboot thats ok to the setup assistant should restart.
It sounds like the mac keyboard has some issues.

  • I've just bought a 2nd hand iMac running 10.7.5 but I can't get my HP Laserjet 2200DN up and running. The Applications Printers doesn't have an HP driver

I've just bought a reconditioned iMac running OSX 10.7.5 but I can't get my HP Laserjet 2200DN printer up and running. I used a Firewire cable to transfer all my stuff over to the iMac from a Power PC G5. However, the printer driver disappeared. The Print & Scan pane in System Preferences is now empty and when I press the + to add a printer the Add Printer pane has nothing in it either. Apple says os 10.7.5 already has printer software installled, but not on my iMac. It says in its list of compatible printers that it supports HP Laserjet 2200 (is absence of the 'DN' suffx siginifcant?) Apple also says to use Software Update to check if software is needed. Manual downloading from Apple, who say they've taken over from HP for this software doesnt' work either - I get a two-part download, one file is an unopenable '.dmg' document and the other is a '.dmg.part' document, similarly unopenable. I'm completely stumped. The HP Laserjet 2200DN is an excellent printer that serves all my needs but I'm beginning to think it may be too old for the iMac, but I sincerely hope not. Anybody out there with workable advice about how to solve this issue? I'd love to hear from you.
    Alex Carr

Firstly, in Safari you will find a button on the right side of the toolbar: note the downward pointing arrow. If you click on that you will get the download progress bar.
I don't know what may be the problem with getting the driver working. I suggest you open Print & Scan preferences. CTRL- or RIGHT-click anywhere in the blank Printers list and click on the "Reset printing system" item in the context menu.
Assuming you have installed the printer drivers you downloaded by running the installer that appears after you mount the .dmg file, click on the Add [+] button to Add a printer. A window should open with your printer listed, hopefully (the printer must be turned on and already connected to the computer. Do a direct connection while getting this configuration set up.) Select the printer. Now, if the driver model name does not appear in the "Use:" dropdown menu, you will need to look for it in the list of available drivers. Once found, select it, then click on the Add button.

  • 2nd Hand iMac wont boot. Tried "repairing drive" in recoveryHD disk utility but doesn't fully pass through. HELP! :(

I have just purchased a second hand mac from Gumtree as Im eager to get into the beauty that is OS X.
But when I try and boot it will just stay at the apple logo with the spinning bar.
I booted into the recoveryHD with COMMAND+R and launched disk utility, I then proceeded to click "repair disk" on Macintosh HD.
It hangs for a while but then says "The volume Macintosh HD could not be verified completely" and then says ERROR:Disk utility cant repair this disk, backup as many of your files as possible, reformat the disk and restore your backed-up files.
I then tried to "re-install OS X Mavericks" but I need an apple ID with Mavericks purchased (please note I am on a windows machine and cant do this).
I've tried calling 133 622 but apparently their phones aren't on from 9am-9pm as stated (It's currently 7:30pm).
This is turning me off Macs as this sort of stuff should not just "happen" and due to apples "no windows support" views I cant actually do anything.

Mavericks is a free OS yes? If theres a way I can get it as a purchase on my Apple ID I can download and restore. I was just wondering whether there was a way to restore from the recoveryHD
And as for the no windows support, their OS X utilities image for USB is only available as a .dmg so I cant use that tool to recover from the recovery partition

  • Installing Mac OS X 10.4.7 DVD disk to a 2nd Hand G5 imac?

Hi trying to install my version of 10.4.7 which works on my ibook G4. But I recently bought a 2nd Hand G5 iMac 1.83 Ghz Intel duo. I loaded the disk and it does'nt seem to want to work? It's saying the destination is not suitable? Would I need to buy new Mac OX for the G5 iMac? Any thing have I missed? (holding C btton once restarted!
    iBOOK g4 Mac OS X (10.4.8) 550 Mhz PowerPC G4. 256 MB SDRAM.

You are trying to install the Tiger install package that shipped with your iBook with a PPC processor (or a Tiger retail install package) on a G5 iMac Intel Duo with an Intel processor which is impossible. Even if both Macs have a PPC processor it would not be possible with the install package that shipped with your iBook.
You purchased a 2nd hand iMac G5 with Intel processor without the Tiger install package that shipped with this Mac when new and it doesn't currently have Tiger installed? You really need the install package that shipped with this Mac when new for a number of good reasons.

  • Can't update iOS software - 2nd hand MacBook still wants previous owner's Apple ID

    Hi everyone,
I recently got a 2nd hand MacBook Pro.  However I can't update the core Apple software (iOS etc) since it keeps asking me for the previous owner's Apple ID.  The previous owner has deauthorised the MacBook via their Apple account, but software updates still ask for his ID, not mine.
I have registered the MacBook under my name, i.e. I am registered as the owner, but I can't update it.
Any ideas/suggestions would be gratefully received!  Many thanks.

    Hi Niel,
    Thanks for your fast reply.
A couple of questions if that's OK?
    - How do I uninstall/delete things like iPhoto, iMovie to be able to reinstall them again?  I'm sorry, I'm new to Macs, so I'm not yet familiar with the details.
    - If I erase the internal drive and install a fresh OS, is there any way to save my files/data/configuration to save me having to set everything up again?
    Many thanks

  • 2nd Hand Software - Final Cut Express 3.5

I couldn't find where to put this question so, I'll stick in here...
Does anyone know of any cavaets or 'gotchas' when buying 2nd hand software from somebody?
Apart from the obvious (original boxed dics, doumentation, serial numbers and any software installation keys as a minimum), is there some prodedure that the seller should go through with Apple to inform them that the piece of software in question is changing hands??
I'm intrigued cause I believe that Adobe insist on forms being filled out etc. otherwise you can't re-register the software, but if I were to consider buying a 2nd hand copy of FCEHD3.5 then I'd want to know it was all above board and not pirate software.
    Thanks!
    Luke

For a start, Apple will never know that FCE software has changed hands until you register it - and you don't need to register it.
However, if you do register it, I don't believe there will be any problems.
Adobe is quite different. With Photoshop you have to get their clearance and a "key" to even move it to a new computer of your own!
So I think you have got all the necessary "watch out for" points covered.
    Ian.

  • I purchased my macbook pro 2nd hand and then purchased Lion online thru the apple store and today when I tried to update some of the software I got the message that it was corrupt. Can anyone help me?

I purchased my macbook pro 2nd hand and then purchased Lion online thru the apple store and today when I tried to update some of the software I got the message that it was corrupt. Can anyone help me?

Did the message say what was corrupt. It is not clear from your description of "...it was corrupt" what "it" is. Sounds like the download of Lion was corrupt. Download it again. Downloaded files sometimes get corrupted due to network connection glitches or interruptions.

  • Getting IP address for 2nd hand HP LaserJet 6MP?

We don’t have the user manual, because the printer is 2nd hand and did not come with one. I had read that the IP address might be on the back, but there are no IP-like numbers there.
We are trying to get this printer running with an old clamshell iBook (OS 9.2) and an Asante bridge. Some posts in other threads say the Asante won’t work with this, but if we can get an IP address for the printer then perhaps we can be sure.
I have read threads about running this printer, which is extolled as a workhorse, with 10.6 and we might try that next but it means buying another piece of equipment & maybe a new cable. We’ve already bought a used Apple Laserwriter 16/600 that turned out not to function (printed a test sheet fine then always reported a paper jam though there was none). And we bought the Asante bridge.
All this in aid of occasional use for artistic purposes, using the printer to fuse (commercial) colored lettering onto regular black lettering printed onto gold-leafed paper. We did this for many years with our Apple Laserwriter that we raised from a pup, until it just finally wore out. Other modern printers either don’t get hot enough or aren’t forgiving enough to accept paper with gold leaf.
I felt I had to mention this because so many of the other threads had replies like “Get a new printer, they’re faster and sweller“ etc. but there is not a one that will last for 15 years of regular use as our Apple Laserwriters did, and as many peoples’ old HP 6MPs seem to be doing. We threw away a Kodak printer, cheap thing clacked and vibrated like a rube goldberg machine.
Anyway, suggestions on finding IP address for this printer?

    Cynthia Cheney wrote:
Thank you, Greg. I tried the reconfiguration you suggested. In the Appletalk control panel I turned Appletalk off, then in that same panel chose “Connect via:” Ethernet. It then says below “no zones available” . When I try to print I get an error message, “Laserwwriter 8 cannot be used because of an internal error, -43” (I remember error #43!) Laserwriter 8 requires Appletalk, and I turned it off but it shows as active in the Chhoser when Laserwriter 8 is selected. When I went back to the Appletalk control panel Appletalk had been reactivated, though the pulldown menu still showed “Connect via:” Ethernet and “no zones available” . Appletalk address reads Node 128 and Network 65280, which either I chose many years ago or it was automatically chosen. After checking all this, still got the same error message when trying to print.
You must have AppleTalk turned on to print to that printer _from a Mac running OS 9.2_. You must have AppleTalk turned off to print from a Mac running OS X 10.6.5.
We’re only using the clamshell iBook because we thought it would work without buying additional equipment; we got the Asante box to go with the old Apple Laserwriter purchased previously (had mechanical problems). My husband would use the HP Printer perhaps twice a month, for a few copies of fairly short text each time onto goldleafed paper, so the iBook would be adequate.
If the printer has an Ethernet port, either built in or using a DirectJet card, you should be able to print to it without the Asante Talk device. You can print to it from OS X using IPP. You can print to it from OS 9 using AppleTalk.
I had read that 10.6 ended Apple support for certain old printers, but recent reading of threads has shown me that’s not so in this case. The old HP JetDirect things are on eBay but there’s quite a variety.
Yes. And not all of them work with OS X 10.6 (or Windows 7). That would be why some of them are on eBay: the owners can't get them to work anymore and are making them someone else's problem.
One there now, is: HP JetDirect 200M LIO Internal Print Server (J6039B) Feature
Serves Ethernet and Fast Ethernet 802.3, 10BaseT and 10/100 BaseTX network types
    Supports any LIO-based printer

Anyone know if this would work with the HP LaserJet 6MP and my husband’s iMac running 10.6?
    I'd look at HP's site.

  • 2nd Hand iPod just purchased but can't get it to work on PC - help!?

  • Front Row on 2nd Gen iMac G5

Does anyone know whether it will be possible to run Front Row on a 2nd Gen iMac G5 using an Apple Remote?
Hos does the Apple Remote work? If it's a Bluetooth device, I can't see any reason why it wouldn't work?
Unless 'Front Row' is a 'hard-wired' ROM application?
I like the look but I bought a 2G recently, which I think is the nuts...to be honest the built in i-Sight is of little interest to me...makes me think of internet cafes...and it's going to make the London Store even more of a foreign exchange student hangout.

It says front row and photo booth are included in the software bundled with the iMac. " More software
In addition, the iMac G5 comes with an incredible bundle of software:
    • iLife ’05, which includes the latest versions of iTunes, iPhoto, iMovie HD, iDVD and GarageBand
    • Front Row
    • Photo Booth
    • iWork ‘05 30-day trial
    • AppleWorks
    • Quicken 2006 for Mac
    • 2006 World Book
    • Nanosaur 2
    • Marble Blast Gold
    • Microsoft Office 2004 for Mac Test Drive "
I dont see why apple wont make that available for purchase for those of us who just bought that last rev Imac in May.

  • I baught second hand iMac and having trouble to reset to factory setting Help pls

I baught second hand iMac and having trouble to reset to factory setting Help pls

The previous owner left a Recovery HD partition on the drive. You cannot use it because it will only install a version of OS X that is tied to that persons Apple ID. You cannot use his/her Apple ID nor reinstall his/her copy of OS X. You must start, literally, from scratch.
You can purchase Snow Leopard through the Apple Store: Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard - Apple Store (U.S.). The price is $19.99 plus tax. You will be sent physical media by mail after placing your order.
After you install Snow Leopard you will have to download and install the Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1 to update Snow Leopard to 10.6.8 and give you access to the App Store. Access to the App Store enables you to download Mavericks if your computer meets the requirements.
         Snow Leopard General Requirements
           1. Mac computer with an Intel processor
           2. 1GB of memory
           3. 5GB of available disk space
           4. DVD drive for installation
           5. Some features require a compatible Internet service provider;
               fees may apply.
           6. Some features require Apple’s iCloud services; fees and
               terms apply.
    Clean Install of Snow Leopard
Be sure to make a backup first because the following procedure will erase
the drive and everything on it.
         1. Boot the computer using the Snow Leopard Installer Disc or the Disc 1 that came
with your computer.  Insert the disc into the optical drive and restart the computer.
After the chime press and hold down the  "C" key.  Release the key when you see
a small spinning gear appear below the dark gray Apple logo.
         2. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue
button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
After DU loads select the hard drive entry from the left side list (mfgr.'s ID and drive
size.)  Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.  Set the number of
partitions to one (1) from the Partitions drop down menu, click on Options button
and select GUID, click on OK, then set the format type to MacOS Extended
(Journaled, if supported), then click on the Apply button.
         3. When the formatting has completed quit DU and return to the installer.  Proceed
with the OS X installation and follow the directions included with the installer.
         4. When the installation has completed your computer will Restart into the Setup
Assistant. Be sure you configure your initial admin account with the exact same
username and password that you used on your old drive. After you finish Setup
Assistant will complete the installation after which you will be running a fresh
install of OS X.  You can now begin the update process by opening Software
Update and installing all recommended updates to bring your installation current.
Download and install Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1.

  • 2nd hand time capsule with applecare?

recently i bought i new imac with applecare. I also bought a 2nd hand timecapsule. It says there is an internal disk error that i can not fix. Would the tc be covered by my applecare?

Your best bet is to not volunteer the information that you bought the TC used when you talk to Apple.
However, if Apple deems that the TC is over 3 years old, it will not be covered.

  • Removing someonelses Apple ID from my 2nd hand Macbook pro

Is it possible to remove someone elses Apple ID from my Macbook pro. I have got it 2nd hand and App store wont let me update certain programmes as I need the previous owners apple id credentials? Do I need to do a factory reset. It is OSX Mavericks 10.9.1
    Thanks

Yes.  Any Apple software is licensed only to the purchaser of that software, therefore you would have to purchase it if you want  that software.
Regarding Microsoft software (or any other third party software, that is dependent upon their licensing agreements of which I am not familiar with.
    Ciao.
