2nd hand iMac osx wired keyboard responds but doesnt type stuck at registration screen Help!?

So i just brought this iMac second hand its fairly new and it has osx  not sure what version, wired keybaord and mouse, mouse is plugged into keybaord and works, keybaord works and makes noises but doesnt respond and type the letters, volume and brightness are the only things that work on it, im currently stuck on the registration screen and can't go any further. I tried plugging in my other keybaord from this pc and it just sat on the identifying keybaord screen. has this happened to any one else?? and can anyone help me if its a software issue or is there a way to format an imac with a secret button or something haha.. this is my first mac and want to use it as a studio computer for recording music so im clueless about them cheers any help would be sick

Is it asking you to identify the keyboard? If so it is asking you to press the key that is right next to the shift key. Press the up key and it should continue. A pc keyboard should work with out issue. If you have to reboot thats ok to the setup assistant should restart.
It sounds like the mac keyboard has some issues.

  • I've just bought a 2nd hand iMac running 10.7.5 but I can't get my HP Laserjet 2200DN up and running. The Applications Printers doesn't have an HP driver

I've just bought a reconditioned iMac running OSX 10.7.5 but I can't get my HP Laserjet 2200DN printer up and running. I used a Firewire cable to transfer all my stuff over to the iMac from a Power PC G5. However, the printer driver disappeared. The Print & Scan pane in System Preferences is now empty and when I press the + to add a printer the Add Printer pane has nothing in it either. Apple says os 10.7.5 already has printer software installled, but not on my iMac. It says in its list of compatible printers that it supports HP Laserjet 2200 (is absence of the 'DN' suffx siginifcant?) Apple also says to use Software Update to check if software is needed. Manual downloading from Apple, who say they've taken over from HP for this software doesnt' work either - I get a two-part download, one file is an unopenable '.dmg' document and the other is a '.dmg.part' document, similarly unopenable. I'm completely stumped. The HP Laserjet 2200DN is an excellent printer that serves all my needs but I'm beginning to think it may be too old for the iMac, but I sincerely hope not. Anybody out there with workable advice about how to solve this issue? I'd love to hear from you.

Firstly, in Safari you will find a button on the right side of the toolbar: note the downward pointing arrow. If you click on that you will get the download progress bar.
I don't know what may be the problem with getting the driver working. I suggest you open Print & Scan preferences. CTRL- or RIGHT-click anywhere in the blank Printers list and click on the "Reset printing system" item in the context menu.
Assuming you have installed the printer drivers you downloaded by running the installer that appears after you mount the .dmg file, click on the Add [+] button to Add a printer. A window should open with your printer listed, hopefully (the printer must be turned on and already connected to the computer. Do a direct connection while getting this configuration set up.) Select the printer. Now, if the driver model name does not appear in the "Use:" dropdown menu, you will need to look for it in the list of available drivers. Once found, select it, then click on the Add button.

  • Brand New iMac and wired keyboard not working

I just bought a new iMac.The wired keyboard seems to work, the mouse is plugged into the keyboard and that works, and I can, somewhat make changes to the volume and other small changes. The ESC key works (I can turn off VoiceOver)but... I can not even get the computer up and going. I can not put in my name or other registration information.
Any ideas if the keyboard has some kind of other settings that I need to turn off. There is no software or anything else in the Mac that I know of. It is brand new and just arrived today.
    Anyone have any suggestions?

I'm so sorry. I know this a bummer. But better to take it back. When you take it in, if they boot it and get it to work, make sure and shut down the iMac, wait about ten seconds and press the power button. Make sure it boots to the Desktop and that your keyboard functions as it should. Just make absolutely sure it works before you bring it back home. In fact, since you could not get through the registration process, perhaps they will go through that with you since had problems with it. Something isn't communicating between the iMac and the keyboard. Could be the USB ports, software/hardware ... hopefully they'll repair it to your satisfaction or replace it.

  • 2nd hand iMac - no software

    Hello all,
I have purchased a second hand iMac with no software. I already own an iMac and have upgraded it over the years from 10.4 to and then to 10.6.  As I am no longer using the 10.4 software, and have purchased new versions of 10.5 and 10.6, am I able (legally) to use my 10.4 software that is no longer used to install on my new purchase?
The 2nd hand iMac is a 15" flat panel G4 model. Will my Tiger disks work? If not, how do I go about finding software that is suitable?
    regards,
    Rhys

As long as the Tiger disks are full retail install (black disks and not the gray system/restore disks that came with another Mac), AND you don't have that OS on another computer, it should work.
All iMac G4s can run Tiger. If you have a 1G or faster iMac G4, it can run Leopard if you have a lot of RAM. I ordered a copy of Leopard last month by calling Apple (it's not on the web store). Leo comes only on DVD so if the iMac does not have a DVD reader, you're looking work workabouts.
Tiger is harder to find, and in such high demand that there are rip-off artists charging high prices for what may be pirated software. Be very careful when shopping for Tiger. And there are more Tiger DVD sets than CD sets about, so the caution from the previous paragraph still applies.
You can call Apple support and ask if they still have replacement system disks. You will need your serial number at hand so they can match a disk set to your computer. It's often the cheapest option but is subject to stock on hand.

  • How can I assign a function key on my IMAC's wired keyboard to enter my email address in documents or on internet forms?

I'm trying to set up my wired IMAC keyboard to create shortcuts to enter my email adresses into emails or into web forms.  I was able to do this when I was working with PCs but can't find direction on the process for the MAC.  There seems to be 7 unused Function Keys at the top of the keyboard that are srrving no apparent purpose so logic tells me they must be available for sutomization.
Please help. My fingers are tired...

I don't think you can with the standard Mac OS X tools / sys prefs..
You have to step into the realm of 3rd party key mapper tools.
      I'm reluctant to go there..
I'm happy being able to remap option to be my command key
using the standard System Preferences ->Keyboard..
but.. googling a bit shows some 3rd party tools..

  • Trying to install app disc on my New 2nd hand iMac july 2010 MC511B/A

When trying to install app disc on my new 2nd hand july 2010 MC511B/A get a message box showing OS X utilities, when choosing reinstall OS X get T&C's and then 2 options Recovery&Old Mac, Recovery option says locked, Old Mac option asks me to sign in on my @Apple ID, I do then nothing! tried just loading the 'Install discs (Applications & OS X) but no joy, though not sure if uninstall done correctly:(any idea's?

Well, running on a 2006 model.  I did not have a startup disc.  Initially, it booted up on original software in 2006.  Since then, I've upgraded to 10.6 via a box set.  And, since then I think I popped it up to lion.
All I have on a disc is snow leopard.  And, I can't get farther than the setup screen due to hard drive.  I'm taking to a apple authorized repair store right now.  We'll see what they tell me .  I'm just going to weigh the cost of repair vs. buying new.
Another bad, stupid thing is I had no means of backing up my stuff.  So, I might have lost things like music, vids, etc.  we'll see if they can recover.  If the cost is too much for repair I might just forget it and start over with a new system.  Just not sure at this point.

  • Wired keyboard-number pad&right arrow keys not working-serial # help!

    Hello to whomever reads/replies -
I have a wired keyboard for my iMac(it's not the aluminum imac, but the version before it with the keyboard and mouse that came with it). I got this keyboard June 2007 after the original keyboard sent to me had problems with it with some keys not working properly. And now about a week ago my right arrow key and the zero, decimal point, one, two, three and enter button on the keypad stopped working out of the blue. One night they worked and the next they didn't with nothing being done different, nor was the keyboard stored differently.
I've cleaned the keyboard inside and out twice and tried pushing the little squishy thing under the keys when you pop them off and there's no response with those being pushed either so something's got to be wrong with the keyboard itself.
Also, when I go online to look up the warrenty on this keyboard, #1 i can't find where it tells me where the serial number on the **** WIRED keyboard is, just gives me where i can find it on the WIRELESS keyboards. Ugh. So I looked under my keyboard and punched in the numbers and letters that i found on a little silver plate just below where the wire and USB ports are in the top of the keyboard and I get an 'invalid serial number' error message.
So.. could anyone help me with these problems? I'd really rather not call tech support since it took me over two hours to explain to the man that I spoke with last year about my other keyboard and I just don't have the time! Thanks in advance!
    Sharon

    Hello sharon:
    Welcome to Apple discussions.
Run, don't walk to the phone. Call Applecare and indicate you have a warranty problem. The KB is (or will be shortly) out of warranty. It may take you some time, but it may save you some money in the long run.
Incidentally, it appears to me that your KB is, indeed, broken.

  • Imac won't boot from CD or HD-? mark on screen HELP!

I hope someone can help with this. I bought an imac for my little girl on Ebay. Its a Graphite CRT, with I believe a 20G HD and 128 of memory. I think it is either a 400mhz or 600.
It came on at first and I put in a Tiger DVD to upgrade the OS. It worked for a min or two. I also bought another 128 dimm and installed that into the memory slot.
Well, after that, I now only get a purplish screen or the screen with the ? and the mac face flashing back and forth. It will not read ANY CD or start from the HD at all. I took out the memory I put in, reset the pram, tried Disk Warrior on the drive. Nothing. Just the flashing question mark. The guy I got it from on Ebay was totally unhelpful except to say he thought it could be fixed.
I keep thinking Hard drive, but why doesnt the cd/dvd recognize anything I put in there?
I hold the C key down to start from a cd and nothing. It makes a sound like its trying, but to no avail.
I have seen various people on here with various problems, but nothing exactly like this. Can someone please help? I have a 4 yr old that really wants to use her "new" computer.
    Thank you.

    Hello again C,
I have seen, or heard the partition for these older CRT imacs can only have a certain size partition to be recognized, is that true?
Not for your Slot Loader. The "first 8 GB partition" applies to Tray Loaders.
I think the drive I have is about 40G.
That should be perfect as you don't want anything above 128GB.
I started it just now with the option key down. I do get a screen with two icons. The one on the left is like the refresh button on safari, a circular arrow, the one on the right is an arrow pointing right. The circular one makes the little wait clock come up but nothing happens. The other, does nothing.
Darn, I must have had the fingers on the wrong hand crossed. This is the Startup Manager, which will show any bootable Operating Systems. If it doesn't show an OS, there is nothing to boot from on that drive nor any drive connected to it. The circular icon will poll the drive again looking for an Operating System. The right arrow key will let you move between bootable systems to select the one you want (also accomplished using the Tab key, once you find the OS you want, hit the Return key).
Do I have to hold down the f key when i put it on, or should the computer recognize it automatically, like they do in OS10?
No, you shouldn't need to press any key. After you have transferred the information on the Firewire drive, connect it to the Strawberry iMac. The idea will be to install OS 9 on the external drive from the working iMac. Insert your OS 9 disk into the Strawberry iMac and run the installer. When you come to the screen for where to install, select the external Firewire drive (if it doesn't give you this option, cancel the install). On this screen you should also see a pulldown with the type of install, select Clean Install.
You will need to download the OS 9.2.1 update found here:
Mac OS 9.2.1: Document and Software
This will also need to be installed on the Firewire drive to update the OS to one which should boot on any CRT iMac.
After a successful install and update, connect the Firewire drive to the Graphite and see if it will start up (if necessary, use the Option key on startup).
If you have questions or need help at any point, please don't hesitate.
    Hope This Helps,
    Jeff

  • 2nd Hand iMac wont boot. Tried "repairing drive" in recoveryHD disk utility but doesn't fully pass through. HELP! :(

I have just purchased a second hand mac from Gumtree as Im eager to get into the beauty that is OS X.
But when I try and boot it will just stay at the apple logo with the spinning bar.
I booted into the recoveryHD with COMMAND+R and launched disk utility, I then proceeded to click "repair disk" on Macintosh HD.
It hangs for a while but then says "The volume Macintosh HD could not be verified completely" and then says ERROR:Disk utility cant repair this disk, backup as many of your files as possible, reformat the disk and restore your backed-up files.
I then tried to "re-install OS X Mavericks" but I need an apple ID with Mavericks purchased (please note I am on a windows machine and cant do this).
I've tried calling 133 622 but apparently their phones aren't on from 9am-9pm as stated (It's currently 7:30pm).
This is turning me off Macs as this sort of stuff should not just "happen" and due to apples "no windows support" views I cant actually do anything.

Mavericks is a free OS yes? If theres a way I can get it as a purchase on my Apple ID I can download and restore. I was just wondering whether there was a way to restore from the recoveryHD
And as for the no windows support, their OS X utilities image for USB is only available as a .dmg so I cant use that tool to recover from the recovery partition

  • IMac OSX Maverick Wifi connected, but no Internet

Hello Mac community. I am in dire need of a resolution on this wifi connection problem. I've tried most resolutions posted here on apple support community.
    I've tried:
    1: Resetting PRAM & SMC
    2: Deleting SystemConfiguration
3: Deleting passwords off Keychain for wifi
4: Creating new wifi location under Safe Mode
I know my DHCP is fine. When I see my wifi connected, I can see my DCHP IP address connected under Advanced in Network Preferences when I check my connected wifi.
Strangely enough, I'm able to surf the internet after 10 minutes when I leave my computer enough. However, the internet cuts off and I'm back to no internet, but the wifi says I'm still connected.
There is another solution In that I turn off bluetooth, but I'm using a magic mouse and bluetooth keyboard. I can't risk turning it off and not be able to use those devices.
