2nd hand ipod please help with connection

Hi there
I have purchased a 2nd hand ipod mini. I have not had one before so i dont know the first thing about them. I have downloaded Itunes, but when I try to connect the lead to usb port my internet connection goes and I cant do anything with it. The message comes up please check your settings, but I dont know what I should be doing.

I am trying to use Siemens Speedstream 4200 modem to connect to the internet using its ethernet port. It is connected via USB to my wife's HP Pavillion DV9000 laptop (Win XP)and works fine with that. Almost all hardware in Brazil where I live does not support mac, so I'm not sure if the modem is made only for PC. I imagine that's unlikely. I have tried using both a simple direct ethernet connection to my mac as well as via my airport base station (which I initialised) but to no avail.
My airport is connected and has the IP address 10.0.1.2. I have also checked 'set serice order' to make sure the correct method of connection is at the top of the list. Do I need to find out some of the PC's network info to apply to my mac's setup?
Please, any help most appreciated as I need to connect for my work.

1st the technology is the same worldwide, and it is not restricted to Mac only or Pc only the technology works on all compuuters irreguardless of the manufacture.
Turn off the Modem you are using and the same with the Airport Base.
Plug the ethernet into the Speedstreme Modem and into the Airport Router start the Modem first and wait a minute and then do the same to the Airport Base.
If your wifes PC is wireless it should connect as well as the Mac.
Get the Mac working first. The Pc should connect as well as the Mac either way with Ethernet or Wireless, if she has a wireless card in her's.
Don't be afraid to consult the paperwork that came with the Airport, or Airport Extreme Base.

After great assistance from William Boyd and Bob Timmons (thanks again, guys), I have successfully set up my 1TB Time Capsule and all of my (3) Macs work just fine via Ethernet and/or Wirelessly. Each connect easily to the web and print on all connected printers, Ethernet and USB, connected to the Time Capsule.
However, despite many hours, I can only get a PC running Windows XP to connect to the web and print to all three printers (using Bonjour) via Ethernet, but NOT wirelessly.
My set up is as follows:
DSL Modem, Ethernet Cord 'out' and into the WAN of the Time Capsule (TC)
TC: Ethernet to Apple Laserwriter, iMac computer (but disconnected until I run Time Machine for the first time), Ethernet (Powered) Hub, and USB to a Canon Inkjet Printer. Using WPA/WPA2 Personal.
Hub: Ethernet to a Powered Ethernet Adapter...plugged into the wall. A companion Powered Ethernet Adapter is on the other side of the house, which is connected via Ethernet to a Dual G4 tower and Xerox Laser Printer. There is also an Airport Extreme Base Station connected to the Powered Ethernet Hub for wireless connectivity on that side of the house.
Importantly, prior to the Time Capsule, I had a Linksys Router and the AEBS, and the PC easily connected wirelessly.
Strangely, the PC is not even picking up a wireless signal!!!!.
Can someone assist?

Clearly the PC has to join your wireless network for anything to happen. I suspect this is due to a wireless security setting. Once connected wirelessly, I think you'll be able to print just fine using Bonjour.
Since this seems unrelated to anything specific to the Time Capsule, I suggest you try the Airport for Windows forum. Good luck!

there is a good chance that this can be related to bad contact in USB lead.. e.g not enough power from IPOD to PC so that pc cannot recognise it. Where I work I get alot of USB devices on pc's that are not recognised and most of the time it is the connection to the device that is not good enough because the flat end of the USB adapter has been gradually bent over time just slightly and now contact is not good. It can also be todo with drivers or If you are using it through a USB hub.
so if it is not working through USB hub try direct. also try in back of PC as these Ports or direct access to main board to pc and would be less trouble some if there was a voltage loss from mainboard in pc to front of unit.

I have just purchased a 2nd hand Ipod Nano 4GB 3rd generation. It is loaded with a 1000 songs but I would like to remove some of them and add my own. I have bought a 2nd hand iPod Touch ( told it was 3rd Gen, IOS 1.1.5) I have no APP STORE and cannot see how to add apps to the iPod Touch
I can connect through Itunes via the PC but cannot seem to find a way to add apps to it.
I've tried a Factory reset/upgrade and nothing has changed. If i try to connect to Itunes via the iPod Touch , even though I have a good internet connection, I get "Cannot connect to iTunes Store"

You have the original (1G) iPod touch. Those can go as high as 3.1.3 that you get here:

You can confirm since the 1G does not have volume buttons on the upper left edge.

You can name your iPod whatever you like. If you are connecting a second iPod for your own use, just connect it to your computer and it will update from your existing library. Depending on the size of your library and the type of iPod you choose you can have it update the whole library, selected playlists or you can manage it manually.
When using a small capacity iPod like the Nano with a large library, you can choose the update option "automatically update selected playlists only" (called Sync Music - All songs and Playlists in iTunes 7). This would allow you to create a playlist specifically for your Nano and drag the tracks you want into it. If you tire of the list and want to change it, you just add or remove the songs you don't want. The ones you take out out remain in the library to be used by the other iPod. Make your playlist a Smart playlist and limit the size to just below the advertised capacity of your iPod Nano (around 3700MB for a 4GB or 1800MB for a 2GB). Go to Settings>General>Reset>Erase all Content and Settings. Then setup the iPod with your account.
If necessary, place the iOS device in Recovery Mode if necessary to allow the restore.
If recovery mode does not work try DFU mode.

uninstall and reinstall
there is a complicated way to work with just the mobile device support but its simpler just to uninstall itunes and related components and then reinstall itunes
ur music will be fine, u will just lose the playlists. but ur mobile device support will be working again.

- Change the DNS to either Google's or Open DNS servers

- For one user uninstalling/reinstalling iTunes resolved the problem
- Try on another computer/network
- Wait if it is an Apple problem
