"2nd Hard Drive" Access by ThinkVantage Back Up Now

I have an X61 with which I am basically very happy. I do have one or two frustrations:
I purchased a Lenovo Docking Station with the hard-drive adapter. I installed a WD-250GB HD. Windows recognizes it, I have even installed programs successfully on it. However, "Back-up Now" under the ThinkVantage system can't find it.
Thanks for any help.

oooh  super easy
if your HD doesnt show on desktop...... go to FINDER  > PREFERENCES > General > then check "hard disks" and "external disks"
now your new HD will show on your desktop
If your new HD is empty, .....format it in disk utility under "ERASE" for MAC OSX Extended journaled
then double click on your HD on your desktop and drag and drop folders pics etc whatever INTO your new HD
se below pic on where to go for formatting your new HD (IF its empty of data!)

  • Can't access 2nd hard drive - " ..you do not have sufficient privileges"

I recently performed an Erase & Install on my PowerPC G5. Everything is fine with the main HD, but not with my 2nd hard drive; I can't access it (The folder "Hard Drive 2" could not be opened becuase you do not have the sufficient privileges).
The icon for it appears on my desktop with a lock on it, but when I hit Control-I to Get Info there is no option to Unlock the volume. Furthermore, under Sharing & Permissions all Privileges are listed as "Custom" and amongst the usual Names (system, admin, everyone" there are 2 additional headings, both (unknown). When I try to change any of the settings to Read & Write (or anything, for that matter), the change does not stick and it reverts back to Custom immediately.
Lastly, when I try to add myself to the Name list, it also does not stick and i remain un-added. I have checked the "Ignore ownership on this volume" box with no changed results.
    Any thoughts?
    Thanks.

ok, BatchMod + Root User did the trick!! Awesome thanks!!
Glad to hear! Sometimes the awesome power of the root user is what is needed. I have been a less than enchanted user of Unix for maybe 29 years now, avoiding wherever possible but gritting my teeth and dealing with it when absolutely necessary. That a little Unix insight is useful from time to time with OS X is a bit of a blessing, considering the alternatives.

I have ordered a 800 firewire to 800 firewire cable and am hoping to use the target mode option to copy files from the MBP.
    Is this possible?
    Hope so!
Any advice and or help would be greatly appreciated.
    Many thanks,

    Thanks Ogelthorpe.
Just bought an enclosure to try that also.
Hoping the MBP isn't really dead but just feigning death
    Fingers crossed.

  • Easy question I'm sure. imac hard full (500gb) mostly from iphoto. no capacity left. what are my options? I've thought of an external drive of 1tb and then a 2nd external drive of 3tb to back up both???? please help.

Those are the options - more space is more space.
Moving the iPhoto Library is simple:
Make sure the drive is formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
    1. Quit iPhoto
    2. Copy the iPhoto Library from your Pictures Folder to the External Disk.
    3. Hold down the option (or alt) key while launching iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library' and navigate to the new location. From that point on this will be the default location of your library.
    4. Test the library and when you're sure all is well, trash the one on your internal HD to free up space.

  • DV7-6c90us 2nd hard drive issues and AMD Radeon Issues

    The Problem:
1)My AMD card has always been flakey and I've tried multiple times to uninstall it permanently and can't, it won't let me. I want to remove it completely since I'd rather have access to the extra hard drive than the graphics card.
    2) when the card is working then my 2nd HDD won't work, but when the AMD card isn't working then my 2nd HDD works
    What I'm Working with:
    HP DV7-6c90us
    Intel Core i7 2670qm chip
16GB of RAM (I added them, Kensington 1666MHz system underclocked to 1333MHz since that's what the i7 maxes out at)
Then whatever obscure AMD Radeon graphics card came with my system.
    Windows 8 Pro
2nd HDD is a 1TB Segate Momentum drive, I pretty much took it from a Travel Drive and put it in my latop
Using the standard power brick that came with my laptop (120W)  and battery is almost always at 50% or better)
The laptop is just over a year old (got it 06/08/2012 from HH Gregg)
    What I've done:
Checked to make sure the 2nd HDD is installed correctly, it is and is plugged in to port two. It shows up in BIOS, but when you try to test it BIOS hangs. It's not corrupt since when it does decide to work, it works without any issues. It even works when I plug in my USB 3.0 adapter and use it as an external drive. That's not really an option since I am constantly transfering and managing that hard drive so it would be too much of an inconvenience.
I tried uninstalling AMD Radeon completely, but can't. I used a site that showed me what to delete from registry, Program File (x86), User App Data (Local and Roaming), and tried to uninstall it through "Programs and Features" under Control Panel (the Catalyst software). At every reboot it comes back like a virus. I don't need it, nor do I want it since the performance is so spotty and has always been, I do need the 2nd hard drive working again since i use it much more than I do AMD.

You will not like the answer but RAID is not possible on that machine. HP does have RAID function on some of the business models but the Pavilion is a consumer model and they have never had a RAID option on consumer models that I know about. Even if you could set up a RAID-0 array it would wipe out the data on the first drive and you would have to reinstall Windows from scratch and when you do a RAID-0 even on machines that permit it the two drives generally need to be identical, not just similar or the same size.
how is it then that some hp models ship with 2 HDD's but show up as one then eg there is a pavilion that is almost identical to mine sorry i don't know the model # but even more recent there are envy models that have this. or do they actually show as separate drives?

  • My plan to get win7 on 2nd hard drive

    Hi all,
I recently bought a new 15" MPB with an apple installed 128gb SSD drive.
My plan was to install a 2nd hard drive in the DVD spot, a 500gb with a 70ish GB win7 partition. I would like to use Win 7 for screencasting for windows tutorials and for Gaming...mostly for gaming
I thought, naively, that this would be a simple boot agent setup...boy was I wrong.
I have already installed the 500gb drive in the optibay, it is working fine
I did not realize that a macbook pro cannot boot to an external drive or dvd. I could be wrong here but all my research seems to indicate that it can't...using something like refit does not fix this problem
I tried going through the boot camp setup with my external dvd drive attached through USB...did not work
also tried a USB thumb drive...no dice
I'd like to avoid having win7 on my 128gb ssd as there is limited space
my current plan is this...if it doesn't make sense or seems wrong please let me know
put the dvd drive back in
make a bootcamp partition on the sad...maybe 35gbs
    install win7
if thats working ok put the hard drive back in
use win clone to clone the bootcamp win7 to the hard drive
    hopefully that will work...
I'm just not sure how I'm going to partition the drive
I would like a 100gb ntfs partition for windows
    and the rest partitioned mac
looks like win clone can expand the image to the larger partition
ipartition seems like it would work for this, but not sure
any ideas on how I can make a ntfs partition on the internal?
can I partition the drive with a windows machine? maybe do the 400gb as exfat?
    thanks

    Get http://www.virtualbox.org/
It lets you setup your own Windows virtualized disk image anywhere you like it.  You'll still need to boot into Mac OS X, but it can run either seemlessly with Windows or full screen if you so desire.
As for booting externally, Mac OS X has no trouble booting on external drives on any MacBook Pro.  As for Boot Camp, check with the Boot Camp forum.
    https://discussions.apple.com/community/windows_software/boot_camp
Note, when using external hard drive for anything but backup, how many copies you have of information that is both on the internal and external drive.
There should be at least two separate external copies of all your data somewhere in event one fails.

  • WinXP dual boot Solaris on 2nd hard drive problem...

    Hi there ppl,
run into a bit of a prob with dual booting winxp and solaris. I have WinXP on 1st hard drive and Solaris on 2nd hard drive 2 (Solaris - partition 1 with slice 0 x86 active, DOS - partition 2 for installing linux later, DOS - partition 3 for fat32 file storage later).
I want to boot to Solaris on drive 2 from the WinXP boot loader on drive 1. Could somebody please tell me exactly how to do this as I've copied the bootsect.sun file from Solaris via floppy to the WinXP C:\ drive, and edited the WinXP boot loader to:
    [boot loader]
    timeout=30
    default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS
    [operating systems]
    multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /noexecute=optin /fastdetect
    multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(1)partition(1)C:\bootsect.sun="Solaris/x86"
and when I select to boot to Solaris I get:
Windows could not start because the following is missing or corrupt:
    <Windows root>\system32\hal.dll
Please reinstall a copy of the above file
    WinXP still boots ok.
Any help would be much appreciated, thanks already.

Hello. I'm trying to use Migration Assistant to transfer data (music) from a 2nd hard drive

That sounds like the Today (Now) display, the one that's show in full when you first Enter Time Machine.  It's not a backup; it's the current contents of your Mac.
When I clicked on the 2nd window, it seems to be a back up from July 20, which I remember making on the old MacBook. It has one folder on it with my username.
    Yes, that's a backup.
When I click on this folder, I find 4 folders inside it titled: Applications, Users, Library and System. I clicked on Applications and it was empty
That sounds like you'd excluded Applications from backups.   Or else you didn't wait long enough for all the apps to be displayed.
sometimes the names of programs covered with a see-through "no parking" sign  - a circle with a slash through it
    That's an incompatible app.
Is this the Time Machine's records?
    Yup.
Can I click on the July 20 date and click on restore? Will everything just come back on it's own?
No.  You can restore individual items that way (if you have permission to them), but not a whole system.  You can restore "simple" apps that way, too, but not "complex" ones -- ones that came with their own installers, because they install other files in other places.  If you don't restore those other things too, the app won't work well, if at all.
Can you post a screenshot of the Migration Assistant window that should show your backups (something like this):

  • Rescue and Recovery 4.5 Incremental backup reverts to LOCAL when i have 2nd hard drive

    I have 2 hard drives.
    Installed R & R 4.50.
Set 2nd hard drive as Store Location.
Initial "scheduled" full back up goes to my D drive. (This does NOT use the windows task scheduler).
During next Incremental  backup (set by the back up at this time setting), it reverts back to local drive,
and does another FULL backup to my C drive  folder RRbackups.
Problem is windows Task Scheduler is NOT set, under TVT folder  task, to backup up to 2nd hard drive.
I edited Task Scheduler to change folder TVT, task launchRnR, actions  from:
    start a program %R%/rrcmd.exe BACKUP location=L name=Scheduled   scheduled
    to:
    start a program %R%/rrcmd.exe BACKUP location=S name=Scheduled   scheduled
otherwise, all works fine. Such a Major bug. Anyone else having this problem?
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

I recently Reinstalled R and R 4.50. Same bug as i noted.  The entry in the  windows task scheduler is INCORRECT.
For those backing up to a 2nd hard drive, use my Solution.  The initial BASE backup will go to the correct
backup location.  Subsequent Incrementals use the Task scheduler to kick off the backup .. I do not know what
the parmeter is to point to a USB drive.  Location = S is the correct parmeter to back up to a 2nd hard drive.
    Control Panel>Administrative tools>task scheduler>tvt folder
Entry "LaunchRnR" select this entry.  Right click this entry. Properties.  Choose the Actions tab. Then EDIT.
You will see ADD arguments(optional);  entry block will contain
    BACKUP location=L name=Scheduled scheduled
Change location=L to location=S.  Click OK.  Next run should go to 2nd hard drive. Major Flaw!
    ===
During Initial 1st time run of R&R, it will ask. you have NOT taken a backup, back up now?  Reply NO.
If you reply YES, it will go to your C drive, since you have not changed your backup location.
If you replied YES, you have a base backup on your C drive.  If this happens, Delete the base back up.
Go to set schedule parm, choose time and day, and location 2nd drive.  It will then ask do you want to back up.
Reply YES, IT will go to the 2nd hard drive.  THEN the bug shows up when incrementals start.
Change windows task scheduler as noted above.

  • I/O error on internal hard drive access

    Hello,
It seems that this problem keeps coming back for me.
Today, I've been trying to install the 10.4.3 update, but it keeps failing. I get this error on my system log:
    Oct 31 21:41:22 My-Computer kernel[0]: disk0s3: I/O error.
Before attempting the upgrade I did a backup. The backup was unusually slow, probably related to the same I/O issue. I am getting the I/O errors with other operations that access the hard drive.
As background information I had my logic board and power supply replaced four months ago for similar hard drive access issues (that time the whole system went dead after clicking noises coming from inside the iMac). A few weeks ago the clicking and beach ball hangs reappeared, but went away just when I was going to take the iMac to the Apple store.
Rebooted with the external drive and disk verification has given me some key error. Attempts to repair have failed. S.M.A.R.T. status is Verified.

That's what I'm planning to do tonight, plus DiskWarrior. By the way, DiskWarrior last night gave me a warning saying that the speed was limited due to hardware problems, if my memory serves me well. For now it seems it is an on and off kind of problem. What bothers me is that this time the filesystem got damaged. I'm thinking of taking the iMac to the Apple store this weekend.

  • 2nd hard drive blues

I added a used Maxtor HD to my G4. When i got it the maxtor had been partitioned and i used it that way for about a year. Shortly after adding it, I decided to make it exclusive to my account on the G4 only. Everything was fine.
Then I decided to reformat the maxtor so that it was no longer partitioned. It works fine now, but now it can be accessed by anyone else using my G4. I have no idea how to set it to be exclusive again.
    PLEASE HELP

Select the drive in the Finder and choose Get Info
from the File menu; under Ownership & Permissions,
change the settings so that only your account can
write to the drive while letting all accounts read
it. Next, repeat this process with everything inside
the drive, but choosing No Access for group and
other. Setting either the group or other permissions
for the drive itself to No Access may cause it to
vanish until these instructions are followed.
    (21414)
YES!!!! It worked. Of course, now i feel kinda dumb seeing as for that the longest I've been bouncing off of the Permissions box because I just couldn't remember what to do next--BTW, the magic momemnt came for me when I clicked on DETAILS. That was it. I've now secured the 2nd Hard Drive and all is right in my world. I guess it's true, the devil IS in DETAILS. Thanks
