2nd hard drive questions MBP 2011

First and foremost, I want to say thanks to everyone who's been a help... Got my [now] secondary 2011 MBP running smoothly without the fans blaring or the SSD read/write time slowing down insanely.
So backstory, When I bought an SSD, for a couple bucks I also picked up a hard drive mount to replace a somewhat functioning optical drive. I did replace that, and I just put my old HDD in its place. The old HDD brings up a couple of issues.
1. I am fairly certain the old HDD is going to fail soon
2. It's "loud." After getting used to an SSD on my new macbook, as well as an SSD on this old one I am typing on now, the HDD is relatively loud in quiet environments.
3. It's battery use. I am well over the 1000 cycle recommended for MBPs but the battery is still holding a good charge, maybe not as efficient, but it works well. But, I did notice shorter battery life with the 2nd hdd.
I was able to somewhat fix 2 and 3 by going into terminal and having the HDD stop spinning after 1 minute.
TLDR:
Which brings me to my questions:
1.What HDD is recommended for quiet performance (and would be faster than my 5400 rpm drive with 40 mb/s read/write speeds in real world tests)?
2. Would an SSD be recommended? I mean the optical drive is sata 2 so there will be a bottle neck.
3. If I went the SSD route, how would I enable trim on the secondary drive? or will the trim support from my main drive transfer over? (I simply downloaded trim enabler rather than going into terminal to enable trim).
4. low price is always a bonus.
BONUS QUESTION:
So on my old HDD i had MS office 2011. It isn't working with maverick and I lost the install CD. Any ideas?

If SSD then go to OWC and purchase it. Then you will not need Trim Enabler. Purchase most any other SSD and you'll need Trim Enabler. Any modern mechanical drive will work although much slower than SSD but you obviously are used to it.

New G5, 2nd hard drive question

My new G5 comes in a few days, I ordered it with only one 250gb HDD. I have a second, smaller HDD I plan to install and I had the idea to run the OS from the second smaller HDD for safety reasons.
Is there anything special I should do, just a clean install of Tiger to the newly formatted smaller HDD, then direct Tiger to boot from that HDD. And should I leave the OS on the larger HDD?

for grins, I installed a second HD of the same size as the original.
I have a few externals that were ATA and extras. I installed them in firewire boxes and they are great for storing stuff and using mobile.
but to your question.
format and install and install all the extra applications you have will be fine.
just time consuming.
so install Tiger, then after you reboot, let the Migration Assistant move all your stuff over. very little of your reg codes will be needed when you do it, it's almost but not quite 100%. your docs etc will make the migration.
can't remember if your iTunes folder makes it.. but that should be a no brainer.
then after you have it all up and running, set the preferences>>startup to the new drive and you're golden.
for backup purposes, my drives are equal so i just clone at night every few days. this works with drives of different sizes until you run out of room on one.

2nd Hard Drive Unmounting

Anyone else having the same issue with FCPX unmouting (ejecting) a second harddrive on a 2011 MBP?
Here's the situation, I'm editing with a storyline of 3 1/2 hours and I get the beachball so I wait...suddently I get a message saying I ejected a disk improperly & FCPX tries to reload my timelines in my project library but nothing load because my 2nd hard drive that I have in place of my optical drive was just unmounted - this has happened several times now. I've set my all disks to not go to sleep so it can't be that. I'm on 10.6.8, haven't upgraded to Lion until I'm finished with several projects.

The drive does unmount. After I get the message, I verified it in Finder, Disk Utility, & a disk utility app called SpeedTools. It does not do it any other time, only when running FCPX.
The drive is a Seagate Momentus 750gb 7200rpm ST97500420AS. It's only been doing it recently since installation a week ago. It still has a 31gb free space.
I just added the drive to Spotlight privacy so it doesn't index it. Not sure what else to do...I don't want the unexpected ejects to corrupt the drive.

I now have a new computer, running Windows 7, and I have the old hard drive as my 2nd hard drive.
How do I get my old Firefox bookmarks off the old hard drive and into my new Firefox installation?

You can find your current profile using about:support pasted into the location bar then click on "Open Containing folder. That is where you will want to replace your old files into.
Next find your old profile on your old HD, see

How to add a 2nd hard drive to HP Pavilion DV7-3165DX, product # WA794UA or WA794UAR.
(1) Order HDD, hard drive, hardware kit. HDD hardware kit includes mounting rails, static shield, screws, rubber isolators, and SATA to motherboard cable. Check your model & Product # for compatibility.
HP Parts HDD hardware kit 517639-001 for DV7-3165DX product# WA794UA and WA794UAR.
(2) Consult Drives - Windows 7 PDF, table of contents, 7 Replacing a drive in the secondary hard drive bay. This will show you how to install a 2nd HDD in a HP DV7.

(3) In Windows 7 select Computer, Select the HDD installed, Format (if not already formatted).
(4) If HDD does not show up in Windows 7 under Computer, go to Start (Menu), Search Programs and Files, enter "Computer Management", select Storage, Disk Management (Local), look for the Bay 2 HDD (should show up as Disc 1, Bay 1 HDD should show as Disc 0), Format the 2nd HDD (The one you just installed).
Update: I have the 2nd HDD (WD 1TB) installed, Windows now recognises it after completing the steps I mentioned in step 4, Format with default allocation NTFS 931.51GB free, 118MB used for formatting. Format with default allocation exFAT 931.51GB free, 1MB used for formatting. I selected NTFS format to reduce file fragmenting.

When i added my 2nd HDD I was ready to get it ordered and shipped, so it would arrive before I arrived home. I also was not sure if it would be offered anywhere else and be 100% compatible. The quality of the factory HP part is good. Since then I found a cheeper source. Newmodeus DV7-3xxx Hard Drive Caddy $27.95 +tax +shipping. Not sure if the quality is the same. If this helps you, post your results and kudos.

2nd hard drive for HP Pavilion dv7t-4000 CTO Notebook - What do I need?

Hi, I have the HP Pavilion dv7t-4000 CTO Select Edition Entertainment Notebook (Product # WV703AV). It has room for two harddrives but only came with one. What would I need in order to install the second hard drive? Would I need just a connecting cable or do I also need caddy or kit?
Also, could I get a solid state? Would my notebook support that or does it only use regular ones?
Currently, I'm running Windows 7 64bit. I've got a 500GB hd (which came partitioned with hp tools/recovery).
Any help with what I would need for a traditional hdd or ssd would be greatly appreciated. I tried to look through other people's posts first, but couldn't find anything specific to my model. Thanks for your time!

Your notebook should be able to work with a SSD but I cannot guarantee it.
I really don't see any point in adding a SSD unless you make it the primary hard drive, and in order to do that, you would need to get a SSD the same size as the original 500 GB hard drive to use the recovery disks to reinstall the operating system.
Most folks get smaller SSD's and they use the W7 product key to activate a plain installation of W7.
If you can read all 25 characters of your windows 7 product key you can make your own installation media and use that to install Windows on a smaller than 500 GB SSD.
If you can read the 25 character Microsoft windows 7 product key, you can download plain Windows 7 ISO files to burn to a DVD for the version of windows that came installed on your PC, and that is listed on the Microsoft COA sticker on your PC's case.
Burn the ISO using the Burn ISO option on your DVD burning program and burn at the slowest possible speed your program will allow. This will create a bootable DVD.
Or use the Windows 7 USB/DVD installation tool to compile the ISO file you download from Digital River. Link below. You need a 4 GB flash drive to use the USB method of compilation.

Use the 25 character product key on the PC to activate the installation.
The key will activate either a 32 or 64 bit installation.
Then go to the PC's support and driver page to install the drivers you need.

WinXP dual boot Solaris on 2nd hard drive problem...

run into a bit of a prob with dual booting winxp and solaris. I have WinXP on 1st hard drive and Solaris on 2nd hard drive 2 (Solaris - partition 1 with slice 0 x86 active, DOS - partition 2 for installing linux later, DOS - partition 3 for fat32 file storage later).
I want to boot to Solaris on drive 2 from the WinXP boot loader on drive 1. Could somebody please tell me exactly how to do this as I've copied the bootsect.sun file from Solaris via floppy to the WinXP C:\ drive, and edited the WinXP boot loader to:

1.....1st 80 GB hard disk, I had window XP installed. (NTFS format)
2....add 200 GB, 2nd hard drive, make 3 partitions, on first 50GB partition I have install Solaris 10.....Having some issue with network config, but its resolve, thank this forum.....
Now, everytime when ever I need to go to Solarid, I have to go in BIOS screen and switch HD, I mean if I want to boot to solaris, I have to make a 2nd (200GB) hd primary..Soaris work fine, but from the GRUB menu, if I select window, its get hung up...
now if I want to boot to window, again I have to go to BIOS and need to switch around hdd.... make 1st (80GB) hdd primary, windows work fine....
Questions are, I do not want to go bacK & forth in BIOS.....

GT780dxr add 2nd hard drive - AHCI mode

I have a gt780dxr with one drive, ocz vertex 3, 2nd bay is empty. The bios is set in raid mode which is correct.
I am trying to add a 2nd hard drive and it isn't recognized in the bios. It is seated properly and does work as I can use it on other laptops.
I have 3 questions.
1. Is there anything special that needs to be done when installing a 2nd drive on this system?
2. I tried to change the bios to ahci mode and get bsod. Is this normal? Should I be able to move from one setting to another. I really don't care about the change but thought it may be needed to install the 2nd hard drivve.
3. There is a rubber block to keep the 2nd drive seated properly. I don't think it is sufficient. Any other ideas or where I can get a hard drive caddy/enclosure.

The fit surprised me also, the samsung is 9.5mm and the bay is 12.5mm, i believe. Plus there is nothing really to hold it in. I will work on a picture. I guess I could get some styrofoam and put it in there to keep in place? Any other products that would be safe?

It is listed as having a speed of 6.0 gb/s instead of 3.0 gb/s and It says it's 'Advanced Format'. Any reason my windows xp-sp2 laptop won't be able to use this drive?
In searching around the web it seems that my version of windows xp with sp2 as well as my bios may be the controlling factors. In entering my product number on the HP Software and Drivers page it indicates my bios is up to date (only available update is for an AMD processor). I may update to SP3 - though further research indicates XP with SP2 has no trouble 'seeing' a 1TB drive.
This compatibility doc from Hitachi that mentions these drives are compatible with some HP DV computers - but not mine specifically (dv8000 or dv8333cl) - and it also lists my motherboard/chipset as being compatible - Intel 945PM Express (I'm not sure about the express part but I'm pretty sure I have the Intel 945PM).

I'm running windows xp with SP2 - it's very stable, my dv8000/8333cl is a centrino dual core intel 1.83ghz, i've upgraded to 2GB of Ram installed, Also I just recovered from a 'black screen' by 'reflowing' (tearing down computer and heating up the Invidia GPU to 350 degrees for a bit to 'reflow' the solder connections to my motherboard) my nvidia Geforce GO 7600 GPU chip and cleaned/re-engineered the heat sink with custom copper heat shims - so my HP laptop is running great and I want to keep it going for a long time.
What are the downsides to popping in a 1TB secondary drive to see if it will be 'seen' and if I can partition and format it for use as my storage drive? Any thoughts? Thanks much!

Seems like my 32 bit windows xp will recognize and use up to 3-3.5GB of the 4GB of RAM. And since memory is pretty cheap now I'm going to try this also.
Anyone have any success going beyond the stated 2GB max for memory?
My Intel 945 PM motherboard/chipset lists max memory as 4GB - so it will only be limited by the 32 bit windows xp?

Added 2nd Hard Drive - Which Format Do I Select?

I just added a 2nd hard drive. It shows up in disk utility. I know I must format it before I can use it. But, there are 6 choices in the Volume format drop down: Mac OS Extended (Journaled), Mac OS Extended , Mac OS Extended case - sensitive journaled, Mac OS Extended case - sensitive, MS-DOS file system, UNIX File System. Is there some information on the Apple site that explains these 6 formats?

Actually, when I have had a drive with problems like bad blocks, I find Intech Speedtool ZoneBench to show up problems the best. It also includes ability with another part of the suite to map out bad blocks (never found any) but I did have to do a 7-way erase with one drive that kept having problems.
An entire 4GB area went from normal 56MB/sec down to 31-33MB/sec - either partition off that area, or just realize it has this problem with longer seeks (the time to go from inline to spare sector - some SCSI drives locate spares on the same track to reduce seeks.
ZoneBench can be set to a 511MB test file, and can test 60? areas per volume, so you can force read/write to over 33%.
The most important areas of a drive that cannot have any bad blocks are the areas that are not part of user allocated space, partition tables, directory (maybe) and the area of the journal file.
If it solved a problem 1% of the time or less, would vendors include it in their "how to setup a drive for end users"?

My plan to get win7 on 2nd hard drive

I recently bought a new 15" MPB with an apple installed 128gb SSD drive.
My plan was to install a 2nd hard drive in the DVD spot, a 500gb with a 70ish GB win7 partition. I would like to use Win 7 for screencasting for windows tutorials and for Gaming...mostly for gaming
I thought, naively, that this would be a simple boot agent setup...boy was I wrong.
I have already installed the 500gb drive in the optibay, it is working fine
I did not realize that a macbook pro cannot boot to an external drive or dvd. I could be wrong here but all my research seems to indicate that it can't...using something like refit does not fix this problem
I tried going through the boot camp setup with my external dvd drive attached through USB...did not work
also tried a USB thumb drive...no dice
I'd like to avoid having win7 on my 128gb ssd as there is limited space
my current plan is this...if it doesn't make sense or seems wrong please let me know
put the dvd drive back in
make a bootcamp partition on the sad...maybe 35gbs
install win7
if thats working ok put the hard drive back in
use win clone to clone the bootcamp win7 to the hard drive
hopefully that will work...

It lets you setup your own Windows virtualized disk image anywhere you like it. You'll still need to boot into Mac OS X, but it can run either seemlessly with Windows or full screen if you so desire.
As for booting externally, Mac OS X has no trouble booting on external drives on any MacBook Pro. As for Boot Camp, check with the Boot Camp forum.

Note, when using external hard drive for anything but backup, how many copies you have of information that is both on the internal and external drive.
There should be at least two separate external copies of all your data somewhere in event one fails.

You could put your install disc on a USB Flash drive with Disk Utility. Also, here is the USB optical drive enclosure I bought. He raised the price a few bucks. Mine ran $10.00 with the shipping.

HP envy dv7 2nd hard drive cable

Hi all,
I recently purchased the HP ENVY dv7-7201sa, and was quite disappointed to find out that the 2nd hard drive caddy space did not come with a SATA cable to connect a secondy hard drive.
I have been unable to locate an appropriate cable, and was wondering if anyone knows where I would be able to purchase one? (I purchased the HP Pavillion version hoping this would fit, but the connction to the motherboard is smaller in the Envy model).
Really hoping someone would be able to help me.
