2nd HD and RAID

I recently purchased a Pavilion p6510y (4 months ago) which came with a SATA 720 GB HD configured as RAID. I added a SATA WD 80GB (WD800AAJS) to be used as a backup. Worked fine for a few weeks then when I rebooted the screen came up with BOOTMNGR cannot be found press CTRL-ALT-DEL to reboot. Did this several times with same results. Tech support didn't help too much. I started disconnecting devices one at a time and it finally came down to the 2nd HD. Once disconnected all is fine. Is there a way of adding a 2nd HD without this happening again. Is it something to do with RAID - not familiar too much with RAID. Motherboard is an ALOE with 6 SATA connectors and an AMD x4 CPU.
Thanks in advance

Hello deweymitch, It seems your system has the AMD Raid Utility. I am not familuar at all with this Raid Utility, as a matter of fact, this is the first time I have seen it. After going to the specifications for your system and doing a little research, it appears the the 750GB hard drive is listed as
1:MAS    <Main HD>     Assignment:  LD 1-1 This listing appears to refer to this drive as Logical Drive (LD) 1-1, which I assume is Logical Drive 1-partition1. 3:MAS    <2nd HD>       Assignment  <Single Disk> shows the second hard drive.
HD 1 shows everything normal (RAID ready) This means that this drive can be added to a second hard drive of the same capacity to create a Raid 0 or Raid1 array. This normally cannot be done in a conventional Raid setup with out loosing all the data on the drive, but it appears tha AMD can accomplish this by migrating the data on the drive to the other newer added drive for a Raid array. Shows nothing for 2nd HD would suggest this drive could not be added to another drive to create a Raid array. It does appear that the MBR may have become corrupted when you got the error. If the system is now booting to the desktop from the 750GB hard drive, with the 80GB drive attached and recognized, I would insure there is no data on the 80 GB drive that I needed and enter the Control Panel, Administrative Tools, Computer Management, Storage, Disk Management, and locate the 80 GB drive and delete the partition on this drive. Then create a New Volume, give the New Volume a name that you would recognize such as Western Digital 80 GB, or something of this nature, format it in NTFS, let the system assign a drive Lable letter. This would repair the MBR if it were corrupted. Close all the Windows, and copy and paste any data that you had backed up from the 80 GB drive.
As I mentioned earlier, I am not familuar with the AMD Raid Utility, but since you do not have enough drives on your system for a Raid array, I would not be concerned about Raid unless you continue to have issues with the drives. Many HP systems are shipped with Raid enabled in the BIOS. I am not sure why HP does this on a single hard drive system, but HP does sell systems with Raid arrays set up on two hards drives when shipped.
Raid arrays do have a place in computers, especially in Servers. I have used Raid arrays for over 15 years on all my homebuilt systems, and to be honest, I now see no purpose for a Raid system for normal home use. The use of Raid arrays can be a little complicated since Raid can be configured in many configurations, for different purposes. Raid is a technology in a league all it's own, so if you don't keep up with the changes in Raid, it's best not to try and use it. For the normal home user it appears to have no benefit. Just to put your mind at ease, just because you see the Raid Utility appear on your screen does not mean you are using a Raid array system, but just that the Raid controller is enabled on your system.

We are going o Great Britain this summer.  Do we need voltage converters as well as plug adapters for our iPads (one is 2nd generation and one 4th)

No. Since Apple power converter work from 110 to 240 volts, no power converter is reguired.
You will need a pin adaprt. I have found my local Ace hardware store to have the best deal on them.

  • Hey, I have a AirPort Express Base Station ( 2nd Generation ), and I wanted to ask that if I join my network at home with the Express Station, will it still run the 2.5 GHz and the 5.0 GHz?

Okay, well I have just bought a AirPort Express Base Station ( 2nd Generation ) and I'm new to it, but I wanted to ask that if it join's a network you have setup at home, will it still run with the 2.4 GHz and the 5.0 GHz.

The AirPort Express will "extend" both the 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz networks and provide more wireless signal coverage when it is connected to another Apple AirPort router and configured correctly.
The AirPort Express cannot provide more wireless coverage though, if you are trying to connect it to another 3rd party wireless router using wireless only.
It should be possible to set up the Express to provide more signal coverage if you connect it back to the main router using a wired Ethernet connection or using Ethernet powerline adapters.

I downloaded the latest version of itunes and now my ipod nano won't sync.  The sync process appears to lock up on the 2nd song and will not continue to sync. I let it run all night the first time and it never went past the 2nd song.  I unchecked the 2nd song so a different song would be 2nd, no benefit; reset my ipod nano; shut down laptop and restarted a different time; shorted the number of songs to sync; all without benefit.

When you connect your ipod up to the computer. It should show the device, usually with the name of the device, in my case 'jordan's ipod'. This should be on the row which shows 'songs', 'albums' e.t.c on the far right. There when you click on it it should go to a different screen showing a picture of your ipod along with two buttons - Update and Restore. Click update and it should take a 2 mins while your ipod is updated to the latest version of Ios.
After updating te ipod see if there is a change in results.
PS: make sure the device is active while syncing so keep tapping the screen.

Import the older versions to the iTunes library from your computer or a backup of it, or buy a newer device, or give up.

Try putting it into "Disk Mode" http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93651
Then with it in this mode connect it to the PC and try to run the latest iPod updater to do a restore and update software if you have the option. the latest iPod updater is 2006-03-23 and can be downloaded here http://www.apple.com/ipod/download/

  • Advice on RAID Sets, Volume Sets, and RAID Levels of the Volume Sets using an Areca Controller

I have read through a lot of information on disk usage, storage rules for an editing rig, users inquiries/member responses in this forum and I thank each and every one of you – especially Harm.
In building my new workstation, I purchased five (5) WD 1T, 7k, 64M SATAIII hard drives and an Areca RAID card, ARC-1880ix-16-4G, which I plan to use primarily as my media/data disk array.  The workstation will use a 128GB SATAIII SSD as the OS/program drive and I will transfer two (2) WD Raptor/10k SATA 70GB drives from my current system for pagefile/scratch/render use.  I tentatively plan on using a mobo SATAIII port for the SSD and mobo SATA ports with a software RAID (level 0) for the 10k Raptors.
In reading the Areca Instruction manual, I am now considering exactly how I should configure the 5 physical 1TB drives in terms of RAID Level(s), Volume Sets, and RAID Sets.  I must admit that I like the opportunity of allowing for a Dedicated Hot Spare as I am generally distrustful of the MTBF data that drive vendors tout and have the bad experience in the past of losing data from a mal-configured RAID array and a single drive hardware failure (admittedly, my fault!).
In line with the logic that one doesn’t want to perform disk reading while trying to write at the same time (or vice-versa), I am thinking the approach above should work OK in using the mobo disk interface and both software and external hardware RAID controllers without having to create separate RAID level configurations within a Volume Set or further dividing up the physical drives into separate RAID sets.  I know in forum messages that Harm noted that he had 17 drives and I could envision a benefit to having separate RAID sets in that situation, but I am not at that point yet.
To some degree I think it might be best to just create one RAID Level on one Volume Set on one RAID Set, but want to solicit thoughts from veteran controller users on their workflows/thoughts in these regards.
Anyone care to share thoughts/perspectives?  Thanks
    Bill

Thanks for the speedy feedback Harm - I appreciate it.
I was thinking RAID level 3 as well.
Of course, it's always something!   I purchased the Caviar Blacks by mistake - which are non-TLER.   I will work with EggHead to return the ones I purchased and replace them with RE4 versions  as I'm not thrilled about the possibility of the controller declaring the volume/disks degraded unnecessarily and although I have the DOS utility WDTLER where one is supposed to be able to enable/disable TLER on WD drives  - I suspect WD is way beyond that now anyway with current builds.
I agree with you about just testing the performance of the options for the raptors - on the mobo and then on the controller.  When I benchmark them I'll post the results in case others are curious.
    Thanks again....off to EggHead!

I have turned it off and on,  held the off button down and  the select button down but it still comes up with that picture on the screen.    Have I broken it?
    Please help.

It means the device is in recovery mode.  You'll need to reconnect it to iTunes and restore it again.
You may need to connect it in recovery mode manually using the instructions in this Apple support document.

  • Windows 8 and Raid 5 (English)

Looking for confirmation that Windows 8 does not have the ability to use Raid 5 even if it is presented a single logical drive by a controller.
I have a SABERTOOTH 990FX R2.0 that makes a drive. All the docs say Raid 0 and Raid 1.
The Windows 8 and Raid 5 question already posted looks to be in Spanish.
    With regards,

Software RAID 5 is not supported on Windows 8. You can use Storage Pool.

  • How to install the driver of the 'SCSI and RAID Host Controller'

    Hi,
I have two Windows XP(32Bit) installations:
•Windows XP SP2(32Bit) which is old and it seems as if it is infected by some viruses.
•I have installed another fresh clean Windows XP(32Bit) SP3. However, I have found that there is no category named with ''SCSI and RAID Host Controller'. However, when checking out the old version of Windows XP, I found  'SCSI and RAID Host Controller'
    is there. (Screen shot below)
The new Windows XP(32Bit) SP3, there is no 'SCSI and RAID Host Controller'
    My motherboard is:
My Desktop Computer(Intel P 4, 512MB of RAM, and Graphics Card  with 256MB of RAM.
]I am seeing that most computer doesn't has the scsi / raid controller . in the old Windows XP on my computer that SCSI and RAID controller exists, and it it has not  a yellow mark on it.
When I installed  a new windwos XP 32Bit SP3, no SCSI/RAID in divice manager .
My computer sound on new Windows XP doesn't work , however, on old Windows XP SP2 works well. I have a buitl-in  sound card. SCSI and RAID controller category in the device manager on the old Windows xp SP2 is realted to sound card,I don't think.
Thus, What drivers would let the 'SCSI and RAID Host Controller' added in the device manager?
A man should convert his anger and sadness into strength to continue living in this life.

If you open the case and shine a light on the motherboard you can usually see both the manufacturers name and the model printed on the pcb somewhere. You should also normally see this information on the first POST screen when you turn on the PC.
Otherwise Google "775i65G" like I did.
Here are the driver downloads (assuming it is an Asrock 775i65G R2.0 and not an R3.0)
    http://www.asrock.com/mb/Intel/775i65G%20R2.0/?cat=Download&os=XP
You should install the inf driver first. Hopefully after you do that you will see your desired listing in Device Manager.
With regard to the AMR driver and the HDMR driver, you can find some information about these here :
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Audio/modem_riser
Unless you actually have something plugged into these risers, it is probably not necessary to install the drivers.
However, the drivers for the integrated C-Media audio chip and the Realtek Lan chip may prove useful.
It looks like the motherboard has integrated video but if you are using a graphics card it will not normally be necessary to install the VGA driver.
You can download both the manual and the installation guide here
    http://www.asrock.com/mb/Intel/775i65G/?cat=Manual
And if "SCSI and RAID Host Controller" is still not shown in Device Manager, don't worry - because these functions are not supported by your motherboard (again assuming it is an Asrock 775i65G)
    Thanks a lot,
First of all, when saying that I have multi-operationgs systems, I mean there are two operating systems installed on my PC(SP2, SP3) both are 32Bit. The first Windows SP2(NOT installed by me) has all multimedia audio card installed
well, and has SCSI and RAID Host Controller shown the device manager. However, only the VGA is not installed on Windows SP2. However, the second one Windows SP3(Installed by me) has VGA not installed, Multimedia audio NOT installed, and there is no SCSI and
RAID Host Controller in device manager.
First: Why did the CPUz, specy didn't detect motherboard name, and only detect the model. IF I need to  open the case and shine a light on the motherboard you can usually see both the manufacturers name and the model printed on
the pcb somewhere, then what benfit would be there from hardware detection software?
Second: Yes, my motherboard has integrated video, and integrated audio card
However, this doesn't mean that I don't need to install them since the Vidoe controller is not properly installed (it is a default VGA ) Also, Multimedia audio controller is not functiong at all.
Finally: if And if "SCSI and RAID Host Controller" is still not shown in Device Manager in Windows XP SP3,  because these functions are not supported by my motherboard, then why is 'SCSI and RAID Host
Controller' installed/shown in the device manger in Windows XP SP2 on the same PC???
