2nd Internal Drive Doesn't Mount

Hello.
I own an early 2011 MacBook Pro where I've installed a 500GB Samsung SSD in the primary hard drive slot, and a 1TB HGST drive in place of the optical disk drive, which has been working wonderfully for my needs.
However, I recently had to send in my mac for a repair (after replacing all the original parts of course) and now I'm finding it impossible to get my second drive to mount after installing it in the optical disk drive bay. Here's what Disk Utility looks like after attempting to verify the disk:
The drive is recognized in Disk Utility, but the 2 partitions on the drive will not mount. When starting my mac holding alt, the partitions do appear, however, with the correct names, but cannot be booted into (prohibitory sign appears). I have successfully mounted the drive via USB, so I know nothing's wrong with it. I've also tried installing other hard drives, and none are recognized. Finally, the internal optical disk drive will read CDs, DVDs, and boot the OSX install disk, so I assume that the SATA connection is working fine.
During the repair, Apple replaced the Logic board, display, and bottom case.
I have 3 theories:
1. The new logic board has a faulty SATA port such that the optical disk drive will function, but a hard drive will not.
2. The new logic board is somehow wired to not accept a second hard drive specifically.
3. The hard drive caddy I'm using is damaged.
Does anyone have any experience with this issue or can offer any suggestions?

Hi,
Try initially:
Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)
and : About NVRAM and PRAM
after rechecking internally for firm connections and no proximity issues with the caddy.
Reboot to working Startup Disk and check within System Information :  Apple menu + hold Option key -> System Information -> Hardware that the drive information and partitions are correct.
If the problem persists, try : Using Apple Hardware Test
Not sure whether AHT will detect the cradle correctly but worth a check.
See how you go, Cheers

  • How to keep an internal drive from being mounted on startup?

Other than opening the box and disconnecting them physically, how do I keep an internal drive from being mounted at startup? I have two problems:
    1) despite having an SSD drive marked as the startup drive, I think one of my other drives is being considered first - startup takes a long time and it shows the gray circle with a line through it, before acquiescing into booting (rapidly and nicely) from the SSD drive. How do I make it ignore the other drives and go right for this?
    2) when the system boots up, if I don't immediately dismount the internal drives (which I don't need most of the time), Time Machine and Spotlight begin going over them.
other than physically removing them, anything I can do in some OS X boot script to keep those drives from being mounted?

Ok, I followed your directions (including de-seleccting and re-selecting the SSD as boot disk from System Preferences). Console: there was nothing under System Diagnostic Reports, but here's what the All Messages logs said after the Boot_Time that demonstrated my issue (3 min wait, then gray circle with a line through it, then finally rapid boot off the SSD). Is there anything here that shows what the heck it's doing before it actually boots off the SSD?

  • Cannot move files to trash from 2nd internal drive

I have waht appear to be a profile specific issue that prevents me from moving files from a 2nd drive in my machine to the trash when using my standard profile.
I to to my 2nd internal drive and when I drag a file to the trash it asks me "Are you sure you want to delete "xxxxx.jpg"  The item will be deleted immediately, You can't undo this action. If I click OK the item is delted and does not do to the trash. It aks liek is is an external drive, not an internal drive
But when I delete a file from my Macintosh HD drive the item goes to the trash as it should.
If I log into my Admin account, the files from the second internal drive moves to the trash normally. I have set my normal login from standard to admin and it stil has the issue, I also have run disk utility and disk warrior and rebuilt the directory, but it has not changed the problem
    ANy ideas?

The drive's invisible Trashes folder might be corrupt. Try deleting it by entering this Terminal command:
    rm -rf /Volumes/drivename/.Trashes
Then unmount the drive and remount it.
Make sure you have the data on the drived backed up. Mistyping that Terminal command by putting even a space in the wrong place can delete everything on it.

  • 2nd internal drive not mounting, melodic tones at startup

Main drive with System folder on it opens fine at startup, 2nd drive which is a 160 GB Maxtor drive will not mount, nor show up on Disk Utility. Both drives are connected correctly to a Sonnet Tempo ATA/133 card and have been working fine for over three years. Yesterday I went to startup and my computer made a melodic tone similar to a cell phone ringing. Is this an indicator that something's wrong with the drive? The computer is a 867mhz Quicksilver running OS 10.2.8. I tried a few things, I ended up disconnecting the 2nd drive from the ribbon connector & power supply and the melodic tones quit playing at startup. I tried the same ribbon connection and power supply from the dead drive on my good drive and it works fine. I can always replace a bad drive if that is the case, but I had some important video projects on the drive without a backup (lesson well learned here, ouch!). Is it possible to retrieve the data even though the drive will not mount? Any app suggestions or how do I attempt to accomplish this? Thank you!

Many hours worth of work recovered from failed drive! Cool! If anyone out there experiences what I just went through here is what I did:
The Maxtor drive wouldn't spin at startup, apparently the drive has a melodic tone that is supposed to "kickstart" the drive into spinning again when it fails. Well, it didn't do it's thing for me, so I went out and bought a Western Digital drive (supposedly a more reliable brand) with the same 160 GB capacity. I installed and partitioned it, then I installed the bad Maxtor drive in the third bay and ran another cable to my Tempo ATA card's second patch. I left the computer side door open, started up the computer and the drive started to make it's melodic tones again. I knocked on the top of the bad drive with a rubber hammer - wwrrrr, the drive took off running again! It didn't mount the first time, but after a restart it started up on it's own and mounted. What super luck! I was able to transfer all of my work onto the new drive without a hitch. I also found that is very important to read directions pertaining to the proper way to connect a jumper connector on the back of a drive when using multiple drives with an ATA card. I don't trust the Maxtor drive anymore now, so I will just pull it out of the machine. Thanks for the tips Noble B!

  • Mac G5's 2nd Internal Drive disappears

    Hi,
    I have a G5 with 2 internal drives,
one is called STARTUP and has apps, etc.
The 2nd is/was called MEDIA and had lots of documents
and for some reason has disappeared from my desktop
I did a restart and used Disk Utility but I am not finding it
    Any suggestions please?...thank you

    Hi Evan Kreeger1-
If DU doesn't see it that is usually not a good thing.
Before panicking you might want to open the Mac up and check all of the connections to the drive.
    Luck-

  • I'm seeing the "No" sign on Startup, and my internal drive doesn't show up.

Good day to you all. It's my first post here and I come to you in desperation.
Last night, i was browsing the internet and syncing my iPhone. Suddenly my iMac froze and there's no way to restart it but to press the back button. Upon restarting, it showed me the Apple logo then a few minutes more it showed me a "No" sign (ie. No Parking circle.) Noticing that this is a serious one, I pulled out my Snow Leopard installation disc and restarted the system. Last night, I managed to see the internal disk listed in Disk Utility, but it's in red. The partitions (Mac OS X and Windows XP via Boot Camp) can be seen but cannot be accessed. Desperate and tired, I slept the night off.
This morning, I tried my luck again. Fired up the iMac with SL inserted, opened up DU, and my internal drive is not in red anymore. I managed to open my Mac but I really noticed the sluggish performance. A couple of hangs later, I had to restart again using the button at the back, and there it was again: No sign. But now it's even worse. I can no longer see my internal drive in DU. Tried almost everything: resetting the PRAM (holding the X button) and pressing the C with SL disc inserted just doesn't cut it. The odd thing though, is when I press the Option key upon startup, I can see all the partitions (Mac OS X, Windows XP, Snow Leopard disc.) But upon clicking Mac OS X always ended up with the "No" sign.
I'm really desperate since I although I'm using Time Machine, I know I exempted some folders in there. Can you suggest some more instructions to make my internal drive show up? Is there a Terminal command of such kind for it? I hope my drive is still okay since I can still see all of the partitions via Option.
Any help is appreciated. Thank you so much in advance!

    kaloyster,
    Welcome to Apple Discussions.
From what you are describing it looks like your HD has either fully failed or is failing. I would suggest taking it in for service. The good news is you have been using Time Machine so you have a backup of most of your system. As you may know TM does not backup any MS Windows data.
If your machine is still covered by warranty or AppleCare this should be pretty painless. If you are not covered by either then just contact an Apple Authorized Service Provider and bring it in. The contact information in your country is:

  • External Hard Drive Doesn't Mount on Desktop through FireWire 400

I have an external hard drive that mounts on the desktop when connecting to my iMac via USB, but it fails to appear on the desktop when connecting via FireWire 400. It was glitchy in Tiger as well, and had problems since installing Leopard. I was able to get it to work once, after using Leopard Cache Cleaner (a 3rd party program), disconnecting the hard drive, and unplugging the iMac. I moved my computer this week, and had to unplug it and when I powered it back up, the hard drive doesn't appear on the desktop again through FireWire 400 (still works fine with USB). It also doesn't appear in Disk Utility through FireWire.
What good are FireWire if they fail to recognize a hard drive so often?!

upgrade to latest system, that computer will accept, then try again

  • WD 400 GB external hard drive doesn't mount after software update.

I had been using my WD external hard drive with TimeMachine for almost a year. Just recently the WD doesn't show up on desktop, however you can see it under the Apple's "System Profiler". Any suggestions?
    External HDD:
    Removable Media: No
    Detachable Drive: Yes
    BSD Name: disk1
    Version: 0.00
    Bus Power (mA): 500
    Speed: Up to 480 Mb/sec
    Manufacturer: Western Digital
    Mac OS 9 Drivers: No
    Partition Map Type: Unknown
    Product ID: 0x0900
    Serial Number: 57442********************938
    Vendor ID: 0x1058

    c14user,
Looking back at your original post: "Partition Map Type: Unknown" is a little suspicious. I'm wondering if, while the disk was formatted correctly, perhaps the partition scheme was not changed from Master Boot Record when you first began using it. I made that discovering recently on a drive that I could no longer select as a Time Machine disk. If so you'll need to re-partition the disk either GUID or Apple Partition Map.
*_How Should a Time Machine Hard Disk be Prepared?_*
For Time Machine to work properly, the hard disk must be formatted “Mac OS Extended (Journaled)” and its’ Partition Scheme should be either GUID or Apple Partition Map.
Time Machine is incompatible with disks partitioned as Master Boot Record (MBR). Unfortunately, this describes nearly every hard drive you can buy because MBR is a Windows partition scheme. (Naturally, this DOES NOT apply to Apples’ Time Capsule.)
For some, Time Machine begins to perform as expected with a new external hard disk. But then the initial full backup or subsequent incremental backups fail. The user only later discovers the hard disk was still partitioned as Master Boot Record (MBR).
One article on Time Machine made this observation: “Virtually everybody will have to open Disk Utility and repartition the disk as APM or GUID. It doesn't really matter which one because the Time Machine disk will not be bootable anyway. APM allows a disk to boot a PowerPC, GUID allows the disk to boot an Intel processor but both are easily digestible by Time Machine on either kind of processor.” [http://www.girr.org/mac_stuff/backups.html]
    Procedure
Connect the hard disk you wish to use for Time Machine backups.
    Launch Disk Utility.
It will appear twice in the pane on the left. (Make sure you recognize that it is different from the 2 icons that represent your Macs' internal drive.) The upper entry represent the device as a whole, including the controller inside. The lower entry represents the hard disk contained within the device.
Click on the upper icon of the external hard disk.
    Select the "Partition" tab.
For "Volume Scheme" choose "1 partition". (Chose 2 partitions if you intend on storing other data on the disk besides your Time Machine backups.)
    Name the disk.
Format should be "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)".
    Click "Options".
Select either GUID or Apple Partition Map. (See above for significance)
    Click "OK".
    Click "Apply". Then click “Partition”.
Once the external hard disk is repartitioned, select it again in Time Machine preferences and use it for your backups.
Let us know if this was helpful.

  • Internal Drive does not mount

    yesterday on a MacBook mark l;
after a very long MSN typed session, MSN wouldn't close and after a while I turned off MBook turning power off with long press on on/off key.
    now...
Flashing suitcase with ? mark flashing at start up
I tried all the tricks under the sun ,
    Pram (failed),
    start with Option Key (failed),
    start with X key (failed),
    soft boot (failed),
    single user boot (failed),
Disk Utility from install CD does see the drive but "Repair" tab is greyed out.
    No SMART status displayed,
tied to use Terminal from the install CD (failed)
    booting from external clone Drive via Firewire = which would not even see that internal Drive so couldn't use Disk Utility from that system either ;
tried AppleCareProtectionPlan CD - TechToolDeluxe (wouldn't mount),
what can I possibly do ? I do not have DiskWarrior.
any chances to have that internal Drive "seen" by some magic device which would at least check it and repair it so that I could erase it and apply a recent clone of it I did with SuperDuper.
    many thanks enjoy your weekend

Sorry, I seem to be a bit over your head, but worry not, I'm frequently over my own head!
a bit terrified to do something wrong
Completely understandable, I'll try to be clearer.
you say :Can you Safe boot off the external and try it again?
so I need to "Restart" my set up - then engage the SoftBoot mode while Clone's ED boots
then what do I do ?
I think I misunderstood, forget all that please.
as DU off the Clone does not "see" the MacBook Drive - neither "Activity Monitor" (Disk Usage tab) when it normally see it.
my Clone is 2 month old hence why I desperately need to access some data if I can
OK, we need a whole other tact here. If you have twice as much free space on the external, then you won;t need another external drive, ut what I recommend here, (Laptop drives are very short lived, btw), is to get these...
If DiskWarrior can't fix it, you might try Data Rescue II...
    http://www.alsoft.com/DiskWarrior/
    http://www.prosofteng.com/products/data_rescue.php
(Has a Free Demo to see if it could or not, but you'll need another drive to recover to).
    Or FileSalvage...
    http://www.subrosasoft.com/OSXSoftware/index.php?%20mainpage=product_info&productsid=1
    to recover what you can.

  • How do I setup the scratch disk on a 2nd internal drive?

I am having difficulty setuping up a scratch disk on a 2nd internal hard drive for final cut pro X. When I go to file/import the second drive is not visible. Any ideas....
    Thanks!

I had the same issue with my iMac and 2 internal disks: system & applications on 256GB SSD, another 2TB internal hard disk that was meant to store media, and Final Cut Pro X 10.0.3 just wouldn't see my 2TB internal disk. Only the SSD would appear in the Event Browser.
I solved it by checking read/write permissions on the hard disk. I have 2 users: one with admin rights which I used to initially set up the iMac and install software (including FCP X), and another user with standard rights for everyday use (including FCP X production).
My 2nd user only had read permissions on the 2nd internal hard disk. I selected the disk, Command-I, changed permissions to read/write, and when I launched FCP X again, both volumes would show up now. Issue solved!
    Hope this helps.

  • OS 8.5 not booting on 2nd internal drive.

I have two internal hard drives on my G4 Digital Audio M.T. One of the drives has OS 10.4.4 plus OS 9.2.X. I installed OS 8.5 on the second one so that I could play some of my old favorite games.
But going to the system preferences in OS 10 and choosing the OS 8.5 hard drive as the start up drive doesn't work The computer still boots up in OS 10.4.4

    Hi, Mr Pixel -
Unfortunately, no. Your G3 PB "Pismo" originally came with OS 9.0.2 - that is the minimum OS it can use.
In general, no Mac can boot to an OS of a version earlier than the one it shipped with. The reason - earlier OS's don't have, can't have, the necessary files to run newer hardware.

  • MacBook drive doesn't mount, can I just replace it?

    Hi,
I'm responsible for admin-ing a small Mac network here at a start up business, and I've had a problem with one of our user's MacBooks.
The machine booted to the Grey Question Mark Screen, which obviously wasn't good. I've done the PRAM, and attempted a reboot, with the same problem. The machine will load the Leopard Installer DVD, but will not install as it can't find the disk, same goes for Single User mode, which doesn't mount the drive.
    My question is simply:
Am I correct in assuming swapping in a new drive will make the machine function fully? Can I assume the logic board works fine as it boots/loads other bits and pieces?
    Any help would be great!
    Many thanks,
    Oli

Am I correct in assuming swapping in a new drive will make the machine function fully?
Maybe. It's most probably that it's the drive that's failed, but it's by no means the only possibility.
Can I assume the logic board works fine as it boots/loads other bits and pieces?
Not really, no. It's possible that the SATA interface on the logic board has failed. That would still allow the system to boot from a DVD, but keep it from accessing the hard drive.
If it were me, I would assume first that it was the drive that had failed, but I'd suggest either calling Apple tech support (presuming that the system is still under warranty) and getting their opinion, or taking the unit to an Apple Store or authorized service center. Then if the drive isn't the problem after all, you're not on the hook for a drive that you didn't need. Of course if it's out of warranty, then it's your call as to what to try. Perhaps you could find a friendly service center that could pop a drive into the system just to test and confirm that the problem is indeed the drive, before making you buy a replacement.

  • Can TM back up to a 2nd internal drive in MacPro?

All the help files include info on backing up to external drives but I haven't seen anything on backing up to an internal drive in a MacPro. I suspect it will work, but just need a Yes or No.
Set up is MP with two HDs, one for system & one for TM.
    TIA

yes, it will work. I've been doing it ever since Leopard came out on both of my mac pros. much faster and more convenient than using an external.

  • How do I install Tiger on a 2nd Internal Drive?

As nice as some of Leopard's features are, it's too bug ridden for me in its current state. It lives on my primary drive, and I would like to do a fresh install of Tiger (retail) on my second internal drive. How would I go about accomplishing this? Should I press C when booting with the Tiger disc in the drive? I'm assuming that I'll be able to access all my files and applications on the Leopard drive when done. Is that a safe assumption?

So, when I boot off the install DVD it will give me the choice as to which drive to install to? I will remember the clone thing for the next OS release, that's for sure...
<EDIT>Found the answer to that question here http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=5490253&#5490253.

  • Unable to install on 2nd internal drive

I have 2 internal hard drives, the startup drive only has 19 GB capacity and only 1 GB left so I am trying to change the startup to my other internal drive which is 150GB. I tried to intall the OS onto the 150GB drive by restarting with installation cd and holding C, but it says that it cannot boot from that drive. Can anyone help me with this problem?

You can use a backup program like SuperDuper and clone your small drive onto the larger drive. It works flawlessly for me.
