2nd Satellite where Start Menu Disappears

My fiancee just bought a Toshiba Satellite laptop a couple of weeks ago.  It was meant to replace an  older one that seemed to be deteriorating as well as help us make the jump out of XP (I have my own desktop).  One of the problems that had been happening on her older one was that the start menu would disappear and re-appear, making it necessary that we hunt down all those relevant programs the long way.  One day, it finally disappeared for good.  That system had Windows XP on it.
This one has Windows 7 and it has the same problem.  Just today, the start menu vanished.  I don't know if the start menu will return or if it is gone for good but I have never seen this problem before except on the two Toshiba laptops I have become familiar with.
I would like to know this is easily fixed or if I should avoid Toshiba computers altogether.
Thanks in advance.

Satellite A505-S6980
when clicking on the Windows icon, the items that have normally appeared on the left due to frequent use or from having been pinned to the start menu are gone.  All that remained was "My Toshiba."
So you're saying the Start menu is essentially empty? Use System Restore to bring it back.
   What is System Restore?

  • Windows 8 Start Menu Disappeared Items

When I logged in my windows 8 I was surprised when I found that most of the tiles that were in my start menu disappeared even the desktop tile and the store tile.
I found an article that suggests downloading the apps shortcuts and pasting them in this folder
    %ProgramData%\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs
but when I opened this folder I was surprised again to find all my tiles shortcuts there
Nothing is missing at all even the desktop shortcut and store shortcut are there
    So, what is wrong?
Why don't these apps show up in the start menu?
I don't remember doing any thing the last time I used my laptop except uninstalling and reinstalling Visual Basic 6

Version 8.1 windows start menu back, You also can use third party software is very simple, allows you to select various types of Start Menu Display

  • Start menu disappeared

Did March 2015 windows update, and among many problems, the start menu disappeared. I did a system restore and the start menu did not come back. How can I restore the start menu?
    Certified Geek

It is hard to check update history with the menu gone. I can no longer find the settings panel.
    Certified Geek
Follow this instructions from Insider Hub........
    Start menu
When you boot Windows 10 Technical Preview, the Start menu may not appear. Checking for updates may fix this problem. To check for updates without the Start menu, do the following:
    Select the Internet Explorer icon.
Type http://update.microsoft.com into the address bar and select
    Enter.
If you are prompted to run a control, click
    Yes.
This should bring up the Check for updates window. Install updates.
If no update is available, or the available updates don’t fix the issue, restart the device–this should make the Start menu appear. To reboot without using the Start menu:
Hold down the Windows key and select L to lock the device. Swipe up or select
Enter to open the sign in screen. Select the
Power icon on the log in screen to restart the computer.
    OR
Hold down the Windows key and select R to bring up a command prompt. In the prompt, type
    shutdown –r to restart.
Once you are able to get to Windows Update window, you can click Advanced Options > check your update history.

  • Homescreen on start menu disappeared...

On my start menu, the option for home screen has disappeared and if i try to start  any other application, I just get a check mark in the upper left corner of the tile and the the pop-up menu comes up from the bottom w/ the options of unpin from start,
pin to taskbar, uninstall etc. Also, the pop out menu from the right is not available no matter where I place the cursor. migrate from a previous release and reset settings to default also just gives me a check mark in the upper right corner of the tile. Please
    help!

    Hi,
I'm a bit confused with your description, would you please provide a screenshot for this phenomenon?
In addition, according to your description, it seems like the start screen messed up, you can try to use system restore to revert your system to a former normal time point for test to fix this problem.
If there is any progress, please feel free let me know.

  • My start menu disappears in firefox4.

My windows start menu (windows vista home premium) disappears when I open Firefox4: uninstalling 4 and reinstalling 3.6 was the only solution for now. I couldn't access documents, control panel, program search, etc. as long as the browser was open; the entire toolbar from the bottom of the screen disappears.

    Hi,
can you find the minimize icon on the right top corner on the screen?
Or you can power off the machine then power it again to check the result.

  • Start menu all programs disappeared

The all programs selection in the start menu disappeared in build 10041. How come?

All Apps disappeared. That is why I have a problem.
    Just my speculations .......
Is the Start Screen expanded ?
If yes, UN-expand it. It could be that the transparency feature has obscured the "All apps" option.
Could it be that you have a small screen that you need to use the scrollbar to see everything ?
    Thank you.

  • Upgrade to Windows 10 - Start Menu has gone

I upgraded on 29 July to Windows 10 using the Windows Media Creation Tool.  I was very happy with the new system, everything was working fine until 2 days ago the Start Menu disappeared.  I searched for solutions as this seems a common occurrence and Microsoft are aware and working on a fix (this problem occurred with a previous build).  The most popular and apparently successful solution is: Open Windows PowerShell (run as Administrator) from the Task Manager (as a new task) and enter: Get-AppxPackage | % { Add-AppxPackage -DisableDevelopmentMode -Register "$($_.InstallLocation)\AppxManifest.xml"} This did not work for me.  After much trial and error I  havefound changing the affected account from "Standard" to "Administrator" and re-starting works.  Not good long term though.  Has anyone a better solution?

Thank you. Unfortunately I was one of those for whom that solution didn't work.  The problem turned out in my case to be caused by  AdAware 9.0 which was retained in the upgrade.  It was using a lot of memory and seemed to be blocking Updates.  It was not registered in the Control Panel as a program so I was unable to uninstall it that way.  I tried to replace it with the latest AdAware (currently 11.0) to register the program and then to be able to remove it but it was not able to uninstall version 9.0 either (AdAware 11.0 seems itself to be problematic with Windows 10).  I was finally successful by using Revo Uninstaller http://www.revouninstaller.com/ and browsing for the program as even this program did not seeAdAware 9.0 as an installed program.  After a thorough removal of all leftover files and after a couple of re-boots and allowing  Windows Update to install automatically a backlog of updates, the Start Menu is back.  Problem solved.

  • Spartan and Start Menu on 10049

Tried Spartan and didn't like it, so I right-clicked and tried to uninstall. Problem is that my Start Menu
disappeared. Nothing happens when I click Start.
The only answer to the Start Menu returning appears to be to login as another user, delete my old profile, then log back on with my user ID. The problem with that is that all of the Metro/Modern/Universal apps come back. I don't want them, have no use for
them, and want them gone off my computer, so I have to run the Powershell script that only removes them from my profile. I haven't found a way to permanently
remove them from my computer yet.
    So the questions are:
How do I remove Spartan without losing my Start Menu?
How do I permanently remove Metro/Modern/Universal apps?
    Dan

Apparently you can uninstall Spartan. If you right-click Spartan, it has an uninstall option. When you do that, you lose your Start Menu. If the intent was to not allow uninstalls, then this is a bug that should be fixed prior to GA.
To the remainder of my original post. How do I completely remove all Metro/Modern/Universal apps from my computer? I have a desktop. No Camera. Why do I need a Camera app? I want it off my computer.
I buy a new computer from the store or vendor's website. The first thing I do it remove all of the vendor's pre-installed junk software. This version of Windows is the same. I want to remove all pre-installed junk software, i.e., Metro/Modern/Universal apps!

  • The "recently used programs" section on the start menu has disappeared - how do I get it back?

On the start menu, the top few programs are those that I use frequently. There used to be a line, and underneath the line appeared the programs that I have most recently used (other than the frequently-used programs above the line). This bottom section has disappeared - how can I get it back? Running XP with Firefox 33.1.

This is a Windows question, not a Firefox question. Try using a search like www.bing.com/search?q=restore+recently+used+programs+windows+xp for help.

I DON'T SEE FIREFOX ICONS OR FOLDER IN START MENU, DESK TOP OR TASK BAR. HOW CAN I INSTALL THOSE? OR WHERE I CAN START FIREFOX BROWSER?
How can I start or open Firefox?

    HI SBPARK,
When you installed Firefox, did you uncheck the option to create a short cut?
In order to pin to the toolbar, when you have Firefox open, right click on the icon in the bar and select "Pin to task bar".

but cannot do this because I cannot access Mac App Store
If you can't access the App Store from the Apple menu, Dock, or Applications folder installing the Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo will reinstall the App Store for you.
It's ok to do this even you are already running v10.6.8.

FYI:  Some third party software can cause issues with the App Store >   Mac App Store: Sign in sheet does not appear, or does not accept typed text
Apple is not responsible for incompatibility isssues with third party software.

  • Satellite L30-105 - tapping Touchpad Vista start menu comes up

Ever since I have had my laptop (PSL33E) when I tap the touchpad to select something sometimes the Vista start menu comes up which is really annoying.
    Anyone else had this problem?

    > when I tap the touchpad to select something sometimes the Vista start menu comes up
I think this is nothing unusual because the touchpad area or corners can be configured randomly.
I recommend checking the touchpad configuration and if you want disable some annoying functions or features.
The touchpad configuration should be found in the control panel -> mouse -> properties or advanced.
I cannot remember the exact way where to find these options.
    Play a little bit around

  • Where are the shortcuts for the Programs in the start menu Jumplist located?

I would like to change the target for Google Chrome and add a switch to Chrome.exe. I have to do this on about 200 computers, and I can't seem to find the Google Chrome.lnk file for the JumpList?

    Hi,
The information about pinned start menu is stored in two locations.
One is in the hidden StartMenu folder:
    C:\Users\(user-name)\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Quick Launch\User Pinned\StartMenu
And the other is in the registry:
    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\StartPage2

  • How do I remove ALL Metro/Modern/Universal/Windows Apps without removing the Start Menu?

So with three separate builds of WTP I've run the PowerShell command to remove Metro/Modern/Universal/Windows Apps. With each build, it also removes the Start Menu. In the thread below, an MS Support person mentioned that that command was only for Windows
8.x and shouldn't be run on WTP. What? Then why is that command still available? And, why will it remove some Metro/Modern/Universal/Windows Apps, but not others? Are they marked as System required? Why isn't the Start Menu marked as System required? You'd
think that the start menu would be pretty important.
    https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/053f63bc-c174-44f1-8f6c-8ead1ad965fb/spartan-and-start-menu-on-10049?forum=WinPreview2014General
So, with the start menu being an XAML app, how do I safely remove ALL Metro/Modern/Universal/Windows Apps without removing the Start Menu? I have no use for them and don't want them on my computer. Period. There has to be some command like the one we used
in Windows 8.x that will allow use to remove ALL Metro/Modern/Universal/Windows Apps without removing the Start Menu.
Don't give an answer like "just right-click and uninstall". That doesn't work for all of these things, and do you know how long it takes to do that for all of those silly things? Too long! That's also not practical for an Enterprise desktop. It's
also not practical to leave all of that junk on the desktop, so don't suggest that either.
    Dan

The problem with PowerShell and all of those scripts is that those particular scripts require a lot of typing, or copy and paste, or having to figure out where all of those apps are stored and then insert their convoluted names into the script. For
me, scripting is like programming. I have no desire to be a programmer/developer.
I just want an option in Programs and Features to be able to turn these "features" off. We were able to do it in previous versions of Windows. If we didn't want Internet Games, we uncheck the box. If we don't want our users to be able to print
documents over the Internet, we uncheck the box. And so on down the line for any other "feature" we didn't want our enterprise users to have.
Or, we could turn those features off using the System Image Manager. Now we have to write some convoluted script with even more convoluted commands for even more convoluted names for things we don't want.
The easier script in Windows 8.x was just get-appxpackages -online | remove-appxpackages. That removed the majority of the apps for an individual user. The remove-appxprovisionedpackage command, with the convoluted name of the app, would remove them from
the hard drive - one app at a time, but that doesn't work in Windows 10.
So, they came up with a DISM command, but that doesn't work in Windows 10 either. I should say that with my limited developer skills I haven't found a way to make it work.
Again, I have no desire to be a developer/scripter. They are the same thing in my book. I'm a systems engineer. I do operating systems, not write applications.
    Dan
So, I guess there is no real answer to this question.

  • Windows 8.1 need help with Windows Updates and Start menu Or fix my old Windows Xp system

My beloved windows Xp has gave up after many years of working well. It stopped working a few days ago after a lightening strike.
I got this Windows 8.1 computer a few month ago  but it seems to have a problem. I stopped using it after could not get start menu to work and when back to my Windows XP system.
First problem is the start menu is not there. I tried installing something and it says it will take control or something and screen goes black. I clicked canceled quickly in order not to get a virus.
    Where is the start menu?
Second problem, Windows updates does not want to update because it needs Windows 8.1 update. This computer is already Windows 8.1. There I canceled it since it was mostly a virus. Now updates are not working.
If those can not be fixed, how can i fix my Windows Xp to get it back. It does not turn on, I press button and nothing happens. Is this something easy to fix?

Another user discovers that Windows 8.1 is not at all of what it should be.
There is no Start Menu in Windows 8 or 8.1.  However, you can restore your desktop start menu with a very good freeware application:
    Classic Shell
Windows Update comes with Windows 8.1.  There is nothing special you have to do.
It kind of sounds like you've been a bit too quick to download and run whatever you find on the Internet.  You should always research any software you're considering downloading/installing ahead of time.  Google it.  See what others say
about it.  Ask on forums.  In order to use Windows effectively and safely you need to expand your knowledge and become a more sophisticated user.
If you think your new system has become infected, you might want to consider Refreshing or Resetting it to a clean state, or at least visiting one of the anti-malware forums and getting some advice on cleaning it up.  But beware, a lot
of "blind leading the blind" happens on forums.  Always try to read between the lines, and question what people say.
You could consider leaving XP behind.  Its time has come and gone, and pretty much any newer version of Windows can actually give you better service than XP - once you get it tuned up.
It's possible to make Windows 8.1 more functional than XP and about as functional as Windows 7, but it takes a fair bit of effort in reconfiguration and installation of some well-known 3rd party applications that are good (which, unfortunately, most
    on the internet are not).
    Good luck to you.
